Peace talks in Egypt aim to end Gaza war and secure freedom for hostages #News

Negotiators are expected to arrive in Egypt on Monday for talks centered on the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and a comprehensive end to the war, according to recent reporting from The Guardian. LiveNOW’s Austin Westfall is joined by Hal Kempfer, a Retired Marine Intelligence Officer and National Security Analyst, as an end to the war appears to still be on the table.

This comes after Hamas said on Friday that it has accepted some elements of President Donald Trump's plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip. This reportedly includes relinquishing power and releasing any remaining hostages.

"This is a big day," Trump said in a video released Friday evening from the Oval Office. "We’ll see how it all turns out. We have to get the final word down in concrete."

"An Agreement must be reached with Hamas by Sunday Evening at SIX (6) P.M., Washington, D.C. time," Trump wrote last week on social media. "Every Country has signed on! If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER."

00:00a strike mission if that was the case. If it's something where Hamas was using this as an
00:05opportunity to strike the IDF or to cause harm to civilians or do something else,
00:11that would probably warrant what Israel is doing. One thing I should mention is this is not part of
00:16a ceasefire. This was a wholly Israeli decision based on what President Trump asked them to do
00:24to stop strike missions. When they do this, really the only person they have to explain this to or the
00:30only country they have to explain this to is the United States. We have a very close relationship
00:35with Israel. I'm sure that within that, they have probably established some rules of engagement.
00:43In this case, it would be more of an informal rules of engagement and what that defensive posture
00:48would look like. They would explain to their U.S. counterparts who would then pass that on up
00:52eventually to the President of the United States to explain what that is. That's kind of what it is,
00:58but there is no ceasefire going on there. There's no ceasefire agreement. What you have right now is
01:04just Israel has said, we're not going to continue offensive operations. Really, that's a unilateral
01:13thing on their part, which is not something where Hamas can really say much about it. I'm sure they
01:18well, but they really can't say anything about it. You know, Egypt is going to be the next place that
01:23we're really looking ahead to. Negotiators are arriving in Egypt for talks on Monday,
01:27expected to focus on the release of hostages held by Hamas and then eventually a broader end to the
01:32war. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry says that Monday's talks are focusing on the first phase of
01:38President Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza. What does the first phase entail, Hal? We just saw a live
01:44blast on TV, by the way. Yeah, I just saw that blast as well. In fact, I just saw another one.
01:50Things may be heating up out there. There may be more going on. One of the things is, first off,
01:56I just want to point out as a backdrop that you remember President Trump said Sunday to accept it.
02:03Well, I will say this, they're playing for time now. You know, now I've talked about these talks ago
02:08Monday. The U.S. appears to be letting them go into Monday, recognizing that there's a heck of a
02:13lot of details that got to get worked out on this thing to include phase one. Phase one is really
02:20about two things. Number one, release the hostages, which includes not just the live hostages, but the
02:26remains of those who have deceased. And then the second one is Israel pulling back to really that
02:33first line. And they have lines on the map, literally, of how far they will pull back. But
02:37it pulls back out of a lot of Gaza City and some other areas as far as that goes out. That's really,
02:43I think, all they're planning on accomplishing in phase one. But then, of course, the other part would
02:48be they got to look at disarming Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad and any other groups aligned
02:56with them. They have to do that. And then, of course, in follow-on phases, they got to figure out
03:02how they transition this to some sort of peacekeeping force, which could be an Arab peacekeeping force.
03:08And once you create, what this will do is it'll kind of create, once Hamas is stepped aside.
03:14I know many of you think I'm AI. I'm not AI. But this is a vacuum of leadership or a vacuum of
03:21governance. So they really have to work out what is going to step in and govern. And obviously, they're
03:27very far apart. Hamas wants to somehow be part of a future governance thing. The Arab League,
03:36European countries, the US, others have all said there is no way that they're going to be part of
03:42the governance and they're not going to be allowed to remain an armed organization. That's really more
03:47phase two, I would think, but I'm sure they're going to have to kind of narrow down what the plan
03:52is on that before they even start implementing phase one.
03:57You know, let's move over to the flotilla story. It's something that we've been tracking closely.
04:05If our producer Julie here could remind me the location of this live shot that's coming through
04:09right now. It is Portugal, Spain. So yeah, it's Portugal, not Spain. So I'm hearing that we're seeing
04:21the people that were a part of that flotilla, they're returning home after their efforts.
04:29The camera's not on some of the, I believe there are some demonstrators here that are a part of this
04:35media scrum, if you will. The reason why I show this, Hal, is because I want to ask the question
04:39that might be on some people's mind relating to this flotilla. Did it have any tangible impact
04:45whatsoever on Gaza? Zero. Nothing. It didn't get anything in there. And here's the thing. Gaza is an occupied
