Aberaeron's ambitious new sea defenses are facing unexpected challenges! Has this massive £36 million structure created more problems than they solve for the iconic Welsh harbour?

Hear from locals as they dissect the surprising impact of the north-to-south construction. While designed to combat rare north-westerly winds, the defenses are inadvertently funneling the prevailing south-westerly winds, leading to significant sediment build-up at the harbour entrance.

This unintended consequence has turned a critical entry point into a hazardous obstacle. Discover how longshore drift and the breakwater's design are causing increasing deposition, narrowing the already small passage.

Can Aberaeron find a solution to this rocky start and restore balance to its cherished coastline?

00:00See how flat it is over there?
00:03Now a lot of these boats haven't got a big edge on them.
00:07They've got small little outboards.
00:09They're going to come in now at this angle.
00:12The further over you go there, you've got breaking waves.
00:18We don't want to go nearer than that.
00:21We need to be going straighter, but we can't.
00:24So we're going to come over this way.
00:27And you might want to straighten up here.
00:30Let's say you want to straighten up there.
00:32We're heading now straight to that mountain.
00:35You can't see it.
00:37So we can't carry on like that because we were actually at that mountain.
00:43The thing that surprised a lot of people was that the construction
00:47plotted out from the north shore and bends around to the south.
00:50And therefore, whilst it's very, very good at protecting the harbour
00:55from a rather rare north-westerly wind.
00:58Unfortunately, it has to funnel in the prevailing most common south-westerly winds.
01:05The consequence of this seems to be that we have got a redistribution of the seapad,
01:12particularly at the entrance to the harbour, because the so-called longshore drift,
01:17the current that carries the sea up from south to north,
01:21seems to be acting in concert with the prevailing south-westerly wind.
01:26And now the shape of the breakwater to cause increasing deposition of shingle, shale and sand
01:36at the entrance to the harbour.
01:38And as you can see, it's already a very narrow entrance.
01:41Now it's even narrower.
01:44It has become a very hazardous feature of Aber Iron Harbour.
01:48And as you can see, there's a lot of people that have been swinging
01:50in a very well, and they're made such a very popular雪.
01:51So, that's a good place.
01:52Now it's a big mountain.
01:53Now you can see.
01:54From the left.
01:55But we can see.
01:56You know, a very lovely mountain,
01:57and I've got to explore the mountains.
01:59And we can see.
02:00Now the road to the mountain is the mountain now.
02:02And now the mountain's got a peak mountain,
02:04you know, a very interesting mountain.
02:05We can find a famous mountain.
02:06And this is finally beautiful.
02:08However, when we went down in the mountain,
02:10we can see the mountain mountain,
