00:12Hello and welcome to Gangs All Here. My name is Ryan Sampson, but he's the star of the show,
00:16Brian Costello. And after coming off a 23-12 loss, the New York Jets are now 1-3 to start
00:23the season. There's a lot to discuss here, but I'll start with Kaz. Good morning. How's it going
00:29on a Monday morning after that trip to Chicago? Brian, 6 a.m. flight this morning. Dragging a
00:37little bit. You get after it early, man. I respect it. And you don't do it with any caffeine or
00:42coffee too, which is crazy to me. I don't know how you do that on a day-to-day basis.
00:47It's crazy.
00:48I got my dunk in here. We're not sponsored by them, but I need my coffee in the morning,
00:52especially after- We should be. We should be, right? Because we need it after watching that
00:56debacle yesterday. What I'm going to ask you- Yeah, it wasn't pretty. No, it wasn't. So,
01:02look, I'm sure you've seen all of the numbers, all of the things that are coming out of that,
01:06the historical context in which the Jets lost that game. There is not really much positive
01:12to talk about about this game, Kaz, but just from your point of view and what you saw yesterday,
01:18how did you view that?
01:22Well, I thought it was a big step backwards for them, right? I feel like they'd been making
01:27progress. I know we had the big moral victory debate last week or whatever, and that was fair,
01:33but it was because they played pretty well against Detroit. And you can say, well, they lost them. I
01:38understand that. But there were positives to take out of that game. Like you said, there's really
01:44nothing to take positive out of this. Aaron Glenn tried this morning with some stuff, but
01:49I think it's a step backwards. The question now, Ryan, is was this a blip? Was this a little speed
01:55bump that they hit yesterday against maybe a really good team? Again, it's early in the season where you
02:01don't know, are we going to be talking about the Bears as a Super Bowl team? They got them with
02:06a
02:06backup quarterback and it didn't matter. Was this a blip on the radar or is this who the
02:11the 2026 Jets are? And we, you know, we were talking last week when you guys were asking me
02:18if this was a must win. And I said, no, because I think they could win three of the next
02:22four games
02:24and now they have to do that. So it's, it's sort of like, we're going to find out, I think
02:32in the
02:32next month, Ryan, who these Jets are and they've shown some different sides here in the first four
02:37weeks. They really have. Uh, and step back, I think is a, is a great way to say it. I
02:42think
02:42the most concerning part too, about it all is it felt very 2025 yesterday in terms of the offense
02:51and defense where they just weren't competitive. And the score was not reflective of what that game
02:55ultimately was yesterday. Not at all. And, and I actually thought Ben Johnson even took his foot
03:00off the gas a little bit when he did settle for field goals and multiple points. Uh, but I will
03:05say this too for Aaron Glenn and this defense for how much they invested in the defensive line,
03:13the edge position, the middle of that defense with the linebacking group and the defensive tackle group.
03:19That's a lot of resources cause. And they got run over by Chicago with a backup quarterback,
03:24a backup left tackle, a fifth and seventh round pick. I believe it running back or a seventh round
03:29pick and running back with common on guy, but like they legitimately got steamrolled by a lot of
03:36backup players over there. And you should, it showed you what scheming and coaching matters and why you
03:43need that in today's NFL. And I just, I, I, I don't want to panic, but I think there's also
03:49a realization
03:50of when is this superpower and the resources that you invested in the defense going to show up?
03:58Yeah, I think that's fair. Right. And I remember, you know, we, when we did the preview show,
04:02right. It was like, how would you attack them? And I was like, just load up to stop the run
04:06and say, if Tyson Bajan can beat me, he beats me. And you live with, you live with that. If
04:11you give
04:12up a 50 yard pass to Tyson Bajan, so be it, you know, but like, I would not let them
04:18beat me with
04:18the run and the bears just ran all over them. And, uh, you know, it was just, they, the defensive
04:26line is troubling right now, uh, because we view that as a strength and it's not, they're getting
04:32run over there. There's been little to no pass rush. Uh, they're only really getting to the
04:37quarterback when they blitz, uh, they have no interior pass rush whatsoever, which I think
04:42is affecting the guys on the outside. They really miss Quinn and Williams. I know everybody
04:47liked to dog Quinn and Williams and it was your goal. Everyone was clapping when he was traded,
04:52but he, he pushed the pocket and that, that did things that are not getting any push in the pocket
04:57right now. The guys are, you know, Bajan was just sitting back there a lot of the times. I know
05:02the
05:02focus is going to be on David Bailey, but what helps a dead rusher is when the quarterback has to
05:08move
05:08off his point and take a step up. And that's when sacks happen and the Jets are just getting no
05:13push
05:13right now. Um, and yeah, and look, the bears are the number one rushing offense in the NFL.
05:19So you're not going to see this every week. You're not going to face Jameer Gibbs every week,
05:24but if you're the, if you're sitting in Cleveland right now and you're Todd Monken and you're
05:27throwing on the film, you're like, okay, well let's, let's see what we can do here with
05:30Junkins. You know, let's, let's, let's try to run the ball a little bit more than we have. I think
05:35people are going to run on them until they prove that they, they can stop it.
05:39Uh, it's definitely was, it was a concern. Like you said, uh, that this defensive line
05:43is not generating much pass rush, especially from the interior. I'm also concerned that guys like
05:49Joseph Asai, who they gave $34 million in the off season cause has not really made his impact
05:54whatsoever on this defense. I mean, they gave him real money to be an edge rusher and I'm not
05:58just singling him out either. Yeah. In fairness, he missed the first two games. So like, you know,
06:04he's only played two games and yeah, but it's, it's, it's a problem. Uh, he didn't have an impact
06:10yesterday either. Will McDonald didn't have an impact. You have all these guys. Uh, I think
06:15they missed Anambari. Uh, he's a, he was, he's a good edge shatter. They missed him yesterday. I think
06:19that kind of screwed things up. Um, but I mean, when you're two leading tacklers or your safeties,
06:27right, that is not, not a good, that's another of all the stats that I saw yesterday when I came
06:32across that one, I'm like, Oh God, that's, that's rough. That means that the tackles are being made
06:38in the third level. Um, so it's, it's, they, they got to fix it. They certainly do. I mean,
06:46Demario Davis, huge money. They gave Sherwood a contract extension. They brought in Harrison
06:51Phillips, Joseph Asai, Kingsley and Anabari who didn't play yesterday. Will McDonald, first round
06:55pick David Bailey, first round pick Minka Fitzpatrick. They brought in, they tried Daryl Jackson,
07:00who had a really bad penalty yesterday. They tried to really address this defense and bring in guys
07:06that Aaron Glenn wanted, but this is two weeks in a row. Like to your point that they have been
07:10gashed up the middle with the run. And that is an ultimate concern moving forward about how
07:15this defense is supposed to get better. The thing I just mentioned there that I'm interested to hear
07:20your thoughts too. Once again, cause this is an undisciplined team. There is a ton of penalties.
07:25Three of them were three penalties. In fact, wiped out three interceptions for this jets defense,
07:30which they, you did predict, by the way, they did get their first interception this week.
07:33Um, ultimately they did pick Bajan off four times, but three of them negated by penalties.
07:39It's another, what 12 penalties yesterday cause what, how can, how is Aaron Glenn
07:46fixing this or how can he fix this? Well, this is an age old conversation, right? Is it on the
07:52coach?
07:53Is it on the players? Um, I tend to think penalties are on players, but Aaron Glenn put this on
07:59himself
07:59last summer when he basically, he kind of called Robert Sala out, right? He said that they had led
08:04the penalties two years in a row and that wasn't going to happen anymore. I'm not sure where they
08:08are. I heard somebody say you were fourth, I think, or something like that in penalties, but it's bad.
08:13I, I will say one of those interceptions he threw because he had a free play. Uh, two of the
08:19penalties
08:19were delayed games that they took on purpose, but still 10 penalties is too many. And there was many
08:26dumb penalties on third down when they could have gone off the field. It's bad right now,
08:30right? And I don't know how you fix penalties. I really don't. I mean, I've seen coaches try
08:36pushups and laps and all that kind of crap. And that doesn't really work at the NFL level. I know
08:41that works in peewee football. And we tend to think, you know, those of us whose careers ended
08:47in high school, we, we tend to think about those things. It doesn't really work in the NFL,
08:51but I'm not sure how you get the penalties to stop. Uh, but they're, they're a problem
08:55right now. I mean, they had a bunch against green Bay and then a bunch yesterday and they're
09:00not good enough to overcome those types of things. That's the thing is the margin for error
09:05for the jets is so small that they can't overcome things like penalties. They can't overcome things
09:09like kicking field goals when they get turnover. They finally got two turnovers and they kicked
09:14field goals instead of touchdowns. And we saw that in Tennessee as well. They can't overcome
09:19things like crappy two minute offense at the end of the half and crappy two minute defense
09:23at the end of the half. And they did that yesterday and they're losing in situations,
09:29Ryan, and that reflects on the coach. And so I think, yeah, I think that's Aaron Glenn's
09:35biggest problem right now is, uh, they just don't look like a well-coached team.
09:42Thank you. Thank you for saying that. I, I, I appreciate you acknowledging that too.
09:47Let me, but let me clarify because I know we're going to clip this or whatever. Right.
09:50Yeah. That does not mean you should be fired. Right. It does not mean that I, but this season
09:55is a referendum on Aaron Glenn. It's a 17 game referendum on Aaron Glenn. And I truly believe
10:00he deserves all 17 games and he can turn this around. He can show that the team is a well
10:06-coached
10:07team and they can, you know, if they improve and they go on a run this season, then maybe there's
10:12a case for him to come back, but that's what this season is. It's figuring out if Aaron
10:16Glenn's the guy and you know, we always go back to Detroit. They were one in six in the
10:21second year and then they won an eight of the last time. I know you hate it, but they were
10:26one in six. So like, what do you think they were saying about Dan Campbell at one in five,
10:29one in three, one in four, right? What are they saying about Dan Campbell now without Ben
10:33Johnson? Yeah, that's true. But look, they went to a championship game. They've, they've
10:41had success there. I think, you know, I just think Aaron Glenn deserves 17 games. I don't
10:47think, I know that conversation is going to start soon about whether they should make a
10:51move in season. I just, there's no point in doing that in the NFL. It doesn't work.
10:56I I'm not saying that the firing would get, make them better this year, by the way, I'm just
11:00telling you the evidence is piling up on this coach in terms of where he is at in
11:06his career. Cause he is right there at rich co-tight for the first 21 games of his
11:10career. He's four and 17. There's no debating that there's no, Hey, we're getting
11:15improvements here and there. We talked about on this show, this talent on this
11:19team is better than last year, but like you just, I also think no, I was going to
11:26say like you had just pointed out the situations that they are putting themselves
11:30in, whether it's untimely penalties, not capitalizing when you do get turnovers, not
11:35managing the end of the first half, all pointed out by you. That's on coaching.
11:39That's on scheme. That's on understanding how to manage the game. And I just, we're,
11:44we're, we're seeing the evidence pile up on this head coach where he cannot handle
11:48those things well, and it's resulting in more losses than wins.
11:53Yeah. And I don't think they inherited a total mess here either. Like, I just want to
11:58point that out. Like I, there was, there was talent on this roster, like that Joe
12:02Douglas acquired. And, uh, you know, I, I go back when like Douglas took over and the
12:08roster was barren other than Sam Darnold and Quinton Williams at that point. Uh, and
12:14CJ Mosley, uh, you know, in solid first year, they were playing five rookies on defense or
12:21whatever that was. Like there were, there've been times when the coaches come in and there's
12:25been nothing. I don't feel like Glenn inherited a team like that. I think they had talent.
12:29They had sauce, they had Quinton, Garrett, Brees. Um, you know, so it's, it's, it's, it's,
12:38you're right. The evidence is not good against him right now. Right now, if you're rendering
12:41a verdict, it's not going to go Aaron Glenn's way, but I do think he gets, uh, what is it?
12:4713 more games to, to, to see if he can write the ship.
12:50Yeah. He's, he does. Uh, and that was also something we had talked about on this show,
12:55uh, when Aaron Glenn was first hired, right? Cause we said, Hey, there's talent on this team.
12:59They just, they, the coaching we felt like was not where it needed to get them to. And that was
13:04the quarterback. They need a quarterback. Right. A hundred percent. To be fair. He did not have a
13:07quarterback. Yeah. Well, let's talk about the quarterback yesterday. Cause yesterday I thought,
13:13you know, maybe the Packers game was the worst we'd see Gino play. But yesterday a completed
13:18passes at 15 attempts. Granted, they didn't have the ball really at all the entire game
13:23because it was a weird game. But even when he did have the ball, there was some questionable
13:28play calling from Frank Reich and some questionable decision-making from Gino on the inaccuracy of the
13:33passes. And really ultimately what the offense did yesterday, they didn't do anything cause
13:38and, and I'm, I'm really starting to get concerned about this OC and the end quarterback
13:43combination, because that was not a good showing from them yesterday.
13:49Yes. Uh, you're right. I mean, they are, um, Gino was just so inaccurate. It was surprising
13:58because he, even the green Bay game, I thought he was accurate. It just wasn't effective, but
14:03he could have had an interception that one guy dropped the ball on the sideline at one point.
14:07Um, it was weird. They didn't get it. They had no flow whatsoever. I thought when they came
14:12out in the second half, they got something going with the running game and then it just
14:17fizzled. Um, so yeah, but we like, this is what we said about Gino, right? You're going to, there's
14:25going to be weeks when you're like, man, this guy is awesome. And that was in Detroit. And then
14:29there's gonna be weeks where like, this guy just isn't the guy. And that was this week. So it's
14:34going to be a question of how many games does he have in either category? And you know, can he
14:38find
14:39any consistency? Like he, like he was playing like in Detroit and, uh, you know, in Tennessee
14:44was a consistent game, but he was kind of, he didn't, didn't, uh, wasn't flashy in that
14:50one. But I think this is what you get with Gino. This is what you signed up for.
14:55I hear you on that. I think there's also ways an offensive coordinator can smartly coach
15:00around that. Cause Tyson Bajan is a backup quarterback. You saw Ben Johnson. Hey, listen,
15:05man. Like, and he turned the ball over four times and three of them were negated penalties.
15:09Again, I'll say that again, but they won a football game yesterday decidedly by running
15:13the football. And like you said, the jets started to run the ball and started the second half,
15:17but they only ran it with Braylon Allen. I, they didn't ever gave Isaiah Davis a run.
15:22How about Kenyon? Yeah, it was weird. He played two plays. I mean, look, I know what the answer
15:27is going to be from Frank Reich, right? Cause I've heard this from a hundred thousand offensive
15:31quarters here. We, we only, we didn't have enough plays. And in this case, he's actually right.
15:36Like I always drove me crazy. Michael four used to do that when they had like 48 plays
15:39or 50 plays. Oh, we didn't have enough plays. That was always the excuse of why things went
15:43the way. This was really 32 plays. It's really strange. Like it's, so it's hard to evaluate
15:49targets and carries and stuff. But I, Isaiah Davis only getting two snaps is strange to me.
15:55I just would have had a bigger package for him. Uh, I would have tried to force a series with
15:59him. I think he's a good back. I think he's a nice number three. Doesn't make sense.
16:04Why didn't go to him? The screen game just looked all out of sync yesterday. Uh, I, yeah,
16:10I just don't think Frank Reich could have had enough time to kind of figure out what he
16:13wanted to do. I mean, they, how many times again, was Gino going on the line of scrimmage
16:17and the call play clock was running out again though. Cause like that, this is a constant
16:20theme for this offense where it was one real delay of game, right? It was two, two ones
16:25where they did on purpose and one real one. Yeah. It's yeah. I don't know what's going
16:29on there. It's, it feels like there's some kind of disconnect there a little bit. Um,
16:34and, and you can't just blame it all because 80 Mitchell and Reese Hall are out. I think
16:38we all agree. Like you still have Garrett Wilson. He's a premier wide receiver. And
16:43the fact that he only had four targets yesterday is just borderline. Not it's unacceptable.
16:48It really is. I get it. The four out of what they throw 18 passes. He threw four to Kenyon
16:53Sadiq as well with zero catches. Right. I know. I know, but that's eight at 18. I think
16:58we focus on the totals there and it's like, the percentage was still like pretty good.
17:02Like I, it just was a mess just offensively completely. And, um, I do think Gino has to
17:11take more chances to Garrett because Garrett is a guy who can make contested catches and
17:18maybe you get the guy draped all over him. I mean, we see PI calls all over the NFL all
17:22the
17:23time. So I think Gino, and you're going to throw some picks doing that too. But I go
17:29back to Fitzpatrick with Brandon Marshall. Like that was a master class of like, just
17:34throwing it up and like letting Brandon make plays all the time. And you, sometimes you're
17:38like, Oh my God, like he's so covered. And Brandon was just so good at that. Garrett's
17:43not as strong as Brandon, but Garrett has incredible body control and can make those
17:47catches. So I think, I think Gino, I think he's on Gino to sort of just take more chances
17:52with Garrett because teams are going to take Garrett away. Like it's, you don't
17:55have to be Bill Belichick to figure that out. Uh, that that's what they're going to
17:58do. Yeah. I, I a hundred percent agree with you, man. It's just, it's, it is, it's
18:04frustrating as a fan to watch how this team has taken a major step back after you were
18:11hoping you start to see some progress this year. Yeah. I, and by the way, you talked
18:16about like this three of the next four games, Patriots beat the bills in Buffalo. The
18:21Browns just beat the Steelers to get, win their third game. Todd Munkin, a first
18:25time head. Well, I know he's an interim, but at first time being the head coach head
18:28honcho, he looks awesome right now at three and one Clint Kubiak is competing
18:33against the Kansas city chiefs started out three and Oh, before the loss
18:36yesterday, I'm seeing first time head coaches cause turn these franchises that
18:41are debacles and right there and the bottom of the league with the jets and
18:45they're winning football games because they actually know how to coach. And I
18:49just, this is where, right. The larger discussion becomes how much longer do we
18:55as fans have to watch this team fumble a position, a coaching cycle and not find
19:05the right guy. I mean, it's been repeated history now with Sala. Now Glenn
19:10before that it was Adam Gase. It's a long history of them not picking the right guy.
19:16Yeah. Let me give you this one, Ryan, because I was, did you watch the Thursday
19:19game? Yeah, I did. Yeah. So I sit there and I'm watching it. It's Todd Munkin versus
19:24Mike McCarthy, right? Two guys, the jets have interviewed for head to head coaching
19:29job. Yeah. So I did a little went through the list. How many of the 32 current NFL
19:34head coaches do you think have interviewed with the New York jets for the head
19:37coaching job? I don't know. This is interesting. I'm wondering what, how many
19:41take a guess, take a guess, 21, 20, definitely. I'm not going to be 21, 11, 11, including
19:52Aaron Glenn, Robert Sala and Todd Bowles. Um, but yeah, I mean, that just shows you how
19:58many coaching cycles they've been through and they've interviewed, they interviewed
20:03Munkin, they interviewed McCarthy, they interviewed Jim Harbaugh back in the day. They've interviewed
20:06Schottenheimer and Dan Quinn, and they've interviewed all these guys. It's, it's tough.
20:12I will say right about Cleveland. Munkin gets a lot of credit, right? He had the stones to
20:17go with Deshaun Watson, which was, looks like the right call right now. They've drafted incredibly
20:23well in the last couple of years. And that's like, I think when you look at it, you're like,
20:29wow, they, they, so Andrew Barry gets some credit there too. Uh, they, they've really,
20:34really hit it out of park in these last couple of drafts that they've had.
20:37I mean, they traded their best defensive player. We've probably seen in a decade plus in Miles
20:42Garrett, and they still are winning football games. And, and yeah, that's again, like to the,
20:47like you said, to the credit of the GM and the coach by, by doing the right thing with the
20:52team
20:52and they're getting them in the right position to win football games. I, I, for the jets, right?
20:57Like you traded sauce, you traded Quinn and Williams. They're not Miles Garrett, mind you. And
21:02now you really start to wonder with Mugi's draft history, right? Besides the top picks. Yeah.
21:09Mason Taylor has been banged up last year. He's banged up right now, has not been able to stay
21:13on the field consistently. You look at Asri Thomas, you like that, but Malachi Moore, where are you?
21:19Uh, what's going on with, um, I mean the late round picks, they just aren't making any kind of
21:26impact for this team right now. And it's, it's frustrating cause, right? Like we're only four,
21:32four weeks into this, but let that yesterday, what happened really felt like a huge step back
21:38for this franchise. And now you're starting to like, all right. All right. Let me give you the
21:44pep talk, Ryan. Yeah, go ahead. Let me give you the pep talk. Go ahead. If we were, we probably
21:48did do
21:49this. There's probably a video of this somewhere. If we were sitting there on August 25th, right?
21:55And we said, okay, first four games of the season, what do you got the Jets record at?
22:00We said one in three.
22:02One in three.
22:03Right.
22:03Where are they?
22:04They're one in three, right? It's right. I get it. It looked awful yesterday.
22:08It looked awful yesterday.
22:10They looked awful. I get it.
22:11And they blew the game against the Packers by the coach.
22:16I get it. I get it. It looks worse than, but like, that's the thing about August projections.
22:22You don't go, okay, they're going to be up by 10 in the fourth quarter and blow the lead.
22:26You just say, they're going to lose. They're going to lose to Green Bay. Green Bay is better.
22:28They're going to lose to Detroit. They're going to lose to Chicago.
22:31They're right where we thought they were going to be.
22:34This is crunch time now, Ryan. These next four games to me, this is going to define the 2026 Jets
22:43because, again, I know the Browns are 3-1. Are they really a good team or have they gotten
22:49the ball bounced their way a few times here, gotten some luck, right? Are the Raiders really
22:55a good team at 3-1? Have they gotten some luck? The Jets need to win three of these four
23:01games.
23:01That's the bottom line. They have to win threes. I still think the Browns and Raiders are in
23:07the Jets' weight class, and I think the Dolphins might be a weight class below the Jets.
23:12And then I'm kind of writing off the Patriots. They're probably going to lose just because
23:17I've seen them lose to the Patriots and Foxborough so many times, but who knows?
23:20I know they straightened things out yesterday, but they've been kind of a mess.
23:23So it's still in front of your ride. That's my pep talk. You expected them to be 1-3.
23:29They are 1-3. That's disappointing because you can make an argument that they should be 2-2.
23:38I guess you could make an argument they should be 3-1 if you really thought they were going to
23:41complete the comeback on Detroit. But now, this is the season. When we sit here in the beginning
23:49of November and they're going to Kansas City, what's their record? That's the question because
23:54that's where there was wiggle room in the prediction business in the offseason.
24:00All right. That's it.
24:01How did I do? Did I pump you up?
24:02No. No, not really. I still look back to, again, all these coaches across the league
24:10that get hired first time and the teams just look like a better operation all around from
24:15top to bottom. And the Jets just look like a bottom-tier organization. They're going to
24:19continue to be a bottom-tier organization until they prove us wrong.
24:23Yeah. So we've had so many conversations about coaches and coaching hires and what you do.
24:27I will say I think these offensive coaches have a much greater impact immediate, right?
24:36Kubiak, Munkin, Liam Cohen, and Jasmine last year. I just think maybe it's today's NFL. I don't know
24:45what it is. But it feels like the offensive guys just have an instant impact where the defensive
24:51guys maybe it takes a while. Like, obviously, Mike McDonald won the Super Bowl. So you can win with a
24:57defensive coach. But it wasn't overnight there. Like, it took a little while. And that's kind of
25:04how it feels to me. And so maybe Woody Johnson next time is going to go offensive.
25:09I have theories about that, but we'll talk about that at a future episode.
25:13Kaz, thank you for hopping on here. Get some rest. And we're looking forward to your coverage.
25:17And we'll catch up with you later this week, man.
25:20All right. See you, Rob.
