00:07the new york jets wrap up mandatory minicamp and we're here to discuss it on gangzola here we're
00:12back and better than ever frankie in studio along with me ryan your host and producer and of course
00:17we can't do it with our jets beat writer brian costello uh before we get to any of this cause
00:22how are you doing uh this is the last pretty much bit of football for the jets until training camp
00:28how's it going over there yeah last day of school and aaron glenn canceled classes so he canceled he
00:36canceled practice for the last day which was kind of a surprise because he is last year he didn't
00:41cancel anything a lot of coaches you see around the league do that but everyone always i'm going
00:44to cancel not going to cancel he did so he must be pleased with what he saw and yeah now
00:49um they are
00:51off until july 28th and i am soon to be off uh you know i got a few more days
00:55and then i'll be gone
00:56for a while so it's a good time of year any good vacation plans cause no good vacation plans
01:02frankie just uh i spent all my money on aruba last year remember we talked about your your accident
01:10some short trips this year i'm still not fully recovered from that by the way i'm not my
01:15shoulders all messed up but it's what happens when you start getting old but um cause i want to ask
01:20you
01:20this because this is on everyone's mind in jet land we see the knicks they just went on this magical
01:27run they win the nba finals the parade's going on literally right now as we speak basically uh
01:33cause do you foresee the jets ever doing something like this uh in the next 20 years i mean they're
01:42going to be due eventually the knicks were terrible for 20 years so yeah yeah 20 years a long time
01:48frankie
01:48right it is in the next i mean i can foresee the next three or four years i feel like
01:54and i don't
01:54see that happening but we know what it's all about right for the knicks for years and years and years
02:02it was can they get a point guard can they get a point guard who's gonna be the point guard
02:06they got
02:07a point guard right and he is awesome and we're now we've been basically you know praising him for the
02:14last i don't know how many months and the last week has been really insane and measuring whether
02:19he's better than jeter or he's better than messier or is he better than you know eli and all these
02:25new
02:25york uh famous players so with the jets it's not point guard it's quarterback and we're not breaking
02:32news here the jets haven't had a quarterback in a very very long time and can they get that guy
02:39and then have the other pieces around him because we have also seen that just having the quarterback
02:45doesn't always do it if you're buffalo if you're baltimore right they've had cincinnati they feel
02:50like they've gotten their quarterbacks and they haven't won super bowls so it's not just that but
02:55we feel we'd feel a lot better about the jets chances if they had a guy at quarterback that you're
03:00like yeah that's the dude and that's the one and um you know and leon rose obviously gets a lot
03:05of
03:05credit for bringing jalen brunson here and the other pieces and is darren muji possibly that guy
03:10we'll find out uh but it's you know until they get that quarterback frankie it's hard to hard to
03:17project them winning a super bowl yeah i mean you you say 20 years is a long time guys we're
03:22already
03:22at going on 16 years now for the just not making the playoffs so yeah so another 20 years close
03:29it's just a walk in the park for jets fans right now it's crazy because now like 53 years is
03:35over
03:35right for the knicks and it's the jets and the knicks were always kind of together right because
03:39it was like yeah they each had the joe namath and clive frazier that kind of period of time and
03:45then
03:47you know the knicks had success where they made the finals in the 90s the jets haven't had that but
03:51the jets had you know the run under rex where they went to the championship games and they've had
03:55the years and years where both teams have just kind of wandered in the wilderness and lost a lot of
03:59games and now the jets are kind of alone in that uh that category because and when i was young
04:05the
04:06team was the rangers right everyone talked about the rangers in 1940 and i remember how long ago
04:131940 sounded to me when i was a teenager and now the jets have blown past like that was 54
04:21years
04:22when they're when they're the rangers won right so the the jets have now gone past that we're at what
04:29we're at 58 years this year would be yeah yeah so wow yes so yeah can't hit 60 guys we
04:38got to stay
04:39strong don't hit the 60 i know i know i know that's the thing like jets jets fans go at
04:46us in the
04:47comments all the time we love reading the comments from you guys you guys think we're all so negative
04:51i to be honest with you we're being realistic with this team and that's how we view this this
04:55franchise right now it's interesting to say about the jalen brunson point guard jets not having a
05:01quarterback comparison obviously that is really what ties this franchise's future together uh and it's
05:07it's what's amazing is what jalen brunson's already be considered cause with the jeters and messiers
05:12and eli mannings of the world just in a couple of years what he's done for this franchise in the
05:17knicks and he's made fans forget about the horrible ownership that is james dolan a quarterback could
05:22change the same thing how jets fans feel and perceive about woody johnson as well so it's
05:27go ahead i think the other lesson from the knicks for jets fans in particular is how many of the
05:34moves
05:34that the knicks made starting with brunson were not gen not universally loved by knicks fans right it was
05:41donovan donovan mitchell can they get donovan mitchell they didn't get donovan mitchell
05:45and like brunson was not seen as oh my god this is the guy carl anthony towns some people didn't
05:51like that og some people like rg bat rj barrett wanted to keep him and so mckell five first round
05:56picks we always heard mckell bridges five first round firing tibbs firing tibbs and hiring mike brown
06:01right that so like yes we're all of us are in the business of talking about this ad nauseum and
06:09that's kind of the world we live in right now so there's going to be takes on everything but
06:12you got to remember sometimes you're going to be wrong about this stuff and like the next stuff it
06:17feels like most people were wrong about the moves they made and they ended up working totally you're
06:23completely right go ahead frankie one quick thing i think the one thing with jalen brunson that i think
06:28we need at as a quarterback outside of just the play on the field i think it's the leadership stuff
06:35also that jalen brunson has brought to the knicks he's such a confident guy he does not
06:41a quarterback to be the same way yeah but not just like you can play that position frankly
06:45yeah i think you can play that position and be successful i agree without having
06:49true true to a degree quarterback it's not a leader you know yeah i was thinking like
06:54joe burrow pops in mind he's a leader man he's a leader i'm just saying i think in new york
07:00though
07:00you have to be a little bit confident he's got swagger just exactly what you're talking about with
07:04jalen brunson he's got the swagger if you're good at that position you can't be good at that
07:09position if you don't have that completely agree yeah guys who aren't that good at that position
07:12usually yeah no no you guys are right i just think in new york i think it's it's more a
07:16little bit
07:17just a little bit more magnified you have to have a little bit more i just think at that the
07:21tricky
07:21part of that the tricky part of that frankie is it's hard to do that when you're young yep true
07:26so
07:26like mark sanchez couldn't do that right totally did not have that leadership aspect even the success
07:32he had like it's hard to do that brunson came here he already been in the league for a while
07:36he was able to you know when you're signed to that contract you're signed to be a leader it's
07:41it's a little bit easier it's harder it'll be hard like if you know the guy if they dropped the
07:45guy in
07:452027 that guy's not going to walk in the door being the leader yeah well the guy that walked in
07:50the door
07:50again for the jets and is back with this franchise is geno smith and he goes through mandatory minicamp
07:55yet again with this franchise cause and a lot of people are buzzing about how he's looked so far early
08:01on uh i've seen i think a lot of social media reactions saying it's been ultimately positive for
08:07for geno i've seen some turnovers as well i think that's ultimately what you're going to probably expect
08:11from geno this year some ups some downs maybe a little bit in the middle but i want to get
08:17your
08:17takeaway and perspective on what you've seen thus far and heard around geno smith early on here with
08:23the jets and minicamp yeah look he's better than justin fields let's start there right it's i remember
08:30we were doing this last year whether it was this time or in the summer and you guys were asking
08:35about
08:35justin fields and i was kind of like yeah yeah i don't know and i i didn't want to be
08:40completely
08:40negative off of practices but it wasn't pretty genos can play quarterback he he's a quarterback so he
08:47you're you're already better than what you were at last year now there is some element we used to
08:52call it the geno coaster back in the day and i still see the geno coaster is going to happen
08:56because unlike justin fields this guy takes chances and he's not unwilling to throw the ball down the
09:02field he's not unwilling to try to fit it in a tight window sometimes that's going to look beautiful
09:07and sometimes that's going to end up in the other team's hands right he's led the league in
09:10interceptions over the last two years so you're going to have to live with the turnovers but he makes
09:17some throws i remember i can remember clearly his his rookie minicamp and how good he threw the
09:24ball and i remember woody johnson was standing next to me at one of the practices and was like
09:29gushing about him i remember walking away going there is no chance sanchez is starting this season
09:34like there's no chance and said i'm getting hurt and it became a moot point but it was geno geno
09:41can
09:41throw the football and he still can and the difference now is obviously the leadership and
09:46the maturity that he has and yeah people are gushing about him the players the coaches you know
09:51which you expect in june but uh he definitely he has that a little difference about him that way but
09:58it's just he you know i'm sure you guys heard about or saw the throw to ad mitchell on tuesday
10:04in the back of the end zone and it was like he just zipped it it was perfect timing it
10:09was a really
10:10pretty pass and there's been a few of those through the spring when we've been there where um you're
10:14just like yeah we haven't seen that in a little while kaz what is your gut telling you in terms
10:19of
10:20the kind of production you see from geno that you know happening this year i know it's early but
10:24what do you feel like like how do you i mean gareth's a player omar cooper jr's a player 80
10:31looks
10:31like a player you've breezed he's two bookend tackles two tight ends i mean if all goes well or decent
10:38he should have a pretty good year right that's a big i mean it's a big if if all goes
10:41well if
10:42yeah i just wrote my car i just wrote my column about that this this is a team of ifs
10:48right because
10:49if you if you want to talk yourself into like them having a good season you're going to play the
10:53game
10:53that frankie just played well if oh if omar cooper can play immediately if kenyan cd can play me like
11:00yeah they're like they look like good players but sometimes it takes a little while for rookies right if
11:06adenai mitchell might be the most interesting guy on the team right because you watch him and he's so
11:12skilled in terms of like his traits his athleticism like he gets open all the time he's so fast but
11:19it's
11:19like why is he on a second team why did the colts give up on him so early the colts
11:26gave up on him if
11:27you watched him with the jets last year there was times where it looked good and times where he
11:31disappeared and so like it it's obviously how and he was a second round pick like you look at the
11:36talent you're like this guy's probably a first round pick talent like that he has so something's
11:40missing there can he can he figure it out but yeah there's a ton of ifs with this team frankie
11:44and i
11:44think that's what we need to see and we'll get a better feeling training camp but there's i can see
11:51gino putting up decent touchdown numbers and interception numbers right i think i think they both
11:55could be high uh in terms of yards i'm not sure i think that's going to depend on how healthy
11:59he
12:00stays but there's yeah there's reason to believe this offense should be better than what we've seen
12:06in recent years and i think that's not just gino that's frank reich too right like is he's actually
12:11done the job and had success i mean like when he speaks you can kind of feel the confidence and
12:18poise
12:19he has that you know no offense to tanner angstrom but he was learning on the job last year and
12:24so he
12:25he couldn't have that kind of confidence it makes sense right uh and i think another question off of
12:31that cause is can this offense be a top 15 top half of the league type of offense i know
12:38i know i know
12:39you're gonna giggle at that but that's again the what ifs like could it be yeah i that's just a
12:45it's a big leap right like i i think you're hoping top 20 okay i was gonna say that top
12:5120 and i think
12:51you're hoping i think you're hoping to like forget about like the numbers so much as like
12:58can they be functional and i you know i use this reference point all the time can we not be
13:04talking
13:04about they got their first first down at the two minute warning right can we not be talking about
13:08how many first quarters they've gone without scoring a touchdown can they can they just go down the
13:14field on the first drive score a touchdown and feel like take a lead right like how many times have
13:19they been behind in the last five years six years whatever it's been they always playing from behind
13:24it feels like so can they just have a functional offense where they can do that and the numbers
13:29could be the numbers ryan i i think i i think that's the focus and i just look this up
13:34the the
13:35number of touchdowns that teams have scored in the last 10 years the jets are dead last i should
13:40expect with 308 touchdowns in the last 10 years quarterback play in the last decade plus
13:44and then and the next team is the giants so and they're like 342 i think it was so it's
13:50like
13:50you know it's just can they score some damn touchdowns and i that's a very simplistic way
13:58to look at it but i i think that's what you that's what you have that's the way you have
14:01to look at it
14:02because they just look like a professional offense what i want them to do this year guys is i just
14:06want
14:06them to be aggressive on offense take shots down the field get kenyan but gino will do that
14:12yeah i hope frank reich's offense allows that to happen though because he can be a little
14:17conservative himself at times play calling wise i want kenyan sadi to have 75 targets this year
14:23probably not that much but something like that you know that's a lot yeah for all right 55 uh but
14:29like cause i don't want to watch the jets on sunday with talented players you know do playing in this
14:36like seven yard box it feels like we always play in and like it's get garrett the ball down the
14:42field
14:42i don't know i'm just it feels like there's always been like a cloud over the jets and offense besides
14:48for 2015 it took fitzpatrick who kind of didn't care it's a simplistic way to look at it but it
14:53is
14:54really all tied to the quarterback spot i mean yeah it's been so bad with zach wilson sam darnler early
14:59on
14:59uh the fact that they had joe flacco trevor simeon i mean you go on and on justin fields last
15:05year
15:05tyron taylor aaron rogers torn achilles and they go back to i mean it's just it's a mess it's a
15:10mess
15:10that's all it's been right so if gino can like cause said provide a a sense of leadership take the
15:17risks that you're talking about take shots downfield and yes he's going to be up he's going to be down
15:23in some performances this offense should not be the last place offense in the nfl no like that's
15:29and that's the bar right no they shouldn't right they shouldn't even be bottom five right i think
15:35we're going to transition to this right but maybe this is the transition yeah i think the key for the
15:40jets with gino is keeping him upright and you know you look at what happened to him with the raiders
15:45like he was under siege that offensive line was horrendous and i think that really hurt him it was
15:50a big factor in why he struggled there so to me like like every quarterback you know needs needs time
15:58to operate very few of them do well when they're under siege so i think that's a huge key to
16:03season
16:03two is just can they keep gino upright yeah so cause you you highlighted it right there joe titman
16:08we find out gets a four-year extension the jets reward yet another player uh from the left from the
16:14previous draft class uh previous regime i should say but they keep another piece on this offensive line
16:20now you have fashion new you have membu you have titman uh this is three young starters
16:26that they are looking to build this this offensive line around uh what did you make of the fact that
16:32the jets decided to lock him up early here yeah i thought it was a good deal for both sides
16:36really
16:37you know i thought the jets didn't didn't throw crazy money at him and i think you know we're seeing
16:41with the cap where it's going that you can afford to do this stuff and i thought i think titman
16:45has
16:45played well and i thought he played well at guard last year so made sense and this isn't you know
16:51i think
16:51the last two years have no guaranteed money in it so he feels like you know he's definitely here for
16:55three
16:55years but you know maybe not more than that um so i thought it was a smart move titman's a
17:00really
17:01good guy he's a good guy in the locker room a popular guy so i think that's good to reward
17:05that
17:06and like you said they have the three guys now on the line that they can feel good about it's
17:10been a
17:11while since the jets have felt good about their offensive line right i you have to go back to the
17:17nick and brick days really if you're being honest that you know they there was a lot of years there
17:21where that was the weakness of the team and um you know i think joe douglas deserves some credit
17:29here too right we mentioned previous regime some of these guys like he i think he he whiffed on
17:34makai beckton but he he you know abt obviously had the injuries but he he at least tried to address
17:40the offensive line constantly and he ended up with two pieces here and then membu came uh with muji but
17:46uh you know there was years and years i think they went between if i remember right between
17:52vladdukos in 2010 and beckton in 2020 they didn't select any offensive linemen in the first two rounds
17:58of the draft yeah hard to believe that hard to believe that you would just ignore the offensive
18:03line like that and mike mccagman felt you could do the bargain bin thing like he was always big on
18:08that that you can find value in the line didn't really work so um yeah i think they're in a
18:14good
18:14good shape right now they have everybody on the line is signed through 2027 you know that doesn't
18:21necessarily mean josh myers and dylan parham will be in 2027 uh with the way nfl contracts work but
18:27i think they they feel like they could have some stability there if they have a good season
18:30kaz what's the biggest variable do you think for this jets offensive line to actually be in this top 10
18:38conversation because jeff fans are always like we're gonna have a top 10 offensive line
18:42they should be in that conversation this year there's no reason with with olu membu now
18:48now you have bookend tackles are your best best offensive lineman on yeah yeah is it fashion new
18:53is it parham is it josh myers i mean what's the variable yeah what do you guys think yeah
18:57i don't know parham that well right like i just i haven't sat down and watched all the raiders film
19:04i've just i've read the pff grades and all that stuff but for so for me from the guys i've
19:09seen it
19:09like josh myers is the variable here okay it felt like josh myers was a guy they got lucky on
19:17last
19:17year right like they kind of signed him as like let's bring him in as the backup center okay we're
19:23gonna have him compete with titman for the job i think titman was gonna win that job and then
19:29abt gets hurt and things get shuffled and myers is you know he was okay for the season they end
19:34up
19:34signing them to a contract extension he did well my feeling on players like that because you've seen
19:40this through the years is it usually doesn't work two years in a row right like if you roll the
19:45dice
19:45on a guy you might get one good year out of them very rarely do you get two good years
19:49out of them so
19:49i'm curious to see how myers plays this season and you know that's the question is the middle right
19:56there with myers to me and i like again i don't know par him that well maybe he's he's a
20:00question too
20:02but uh that that's if you're talking top 10 offensive line i want to see what they get out
20:07of him yeah i think that's the the nail on the head there cause because the center really should
20:12be orchestrating most of that offensive line communicating between the guards making sure
20:15everyone's in right uh pass protections as well calling out blitzes if they can up there he's got
20:20to be a leader up there parham is definitely a next factor too simpson while he struggled at times i
20:25think he was still a really good veteran leader to have on that offensive line group especially for a
20:29young guy in fashion who um yeah so i just brought a nastiness yeah they need someone like that guy
20:35i'm curious to see who i think membu has that one yeah yeah and if you remember the end of
20:41the
20:41halftime of new england at met life oh yeah he's basically getting into a fight with the defensive
20:47line so he's got that in him but you know but yeah i think they might miss simpson's nastiness a
20:53little bit which also caused some penalties so right there's a careful careful delicate balance you
20:59need as an offensive line between aggressiveness and stupidity um well cause the other thing i want
21:04to talk about on the offensive side of the ball is frank reich we heard him praise geno yesterday
21:09talked about him as a quarterback as a leader what he expects out of him in this offense um look
21:15this
21:16is the forced marriage that they're in right now like him and geno i don't know we we kind of
21:22were
21:23like who's gonna be the offensive coordinator after they let go of tanner angstrand they come to the
21:27decision with with frank reich a guy who has not been in the nfl for a couple years
21:32is this kind of like the last chance for frank reich to prove himself here in the nfl
21:38i don't think he's gonna prove himself ryan right i think he's he's gonna retire
21:42you don't think he's gonna prove himself you don't think he has to prove himself
21:44as an offensive coordinator he's 64 years old i mean he's he's he won a super bowl in the philadelphia
21:51like but he got chased out of the nfl though guys the last stop yeah but i'll prove himself
21:57like that's something the younger guys do i think he's i think he's here for a last ride
22:01he likes iron glenn like they played together uh i think he's here for one last ride in the nfl
22:07sort of like chan galey when chan galey came here it feels similar in a lot of ways to me
22:12to that
22:13chan had been fired by buffalo as a head coach previously fired by dallas as a head coach
22:19and he ended up having another stint with miami after the jets but uh yeah i don't think
22:25prove himself is what i would say but i think he's just i think he's here for one last ride
22:29uh right that's that's kind of the sense i get and the good thing is he's not aspiring to be
22:36a head
22:36coach he's not focused on his next job he's going to be focused on this job which a lot of
22:41guys have
22:41come here and you could sense they're looking for the next job i think this is it for him um
22:45so curious
22:46to see how it goes cause do you feel like aaron glenn's been a little less hands-on with certain
22:51units in this ota is now that frank reich's it's hard for me to see that frank yeah yeah it's
22:57hard
22:57for me to see that like he has made a point of during positional drills he goes from position
23:00group to position group he's not just staying on defense he's watching the offensive line he's
23:05watching i've seen him go from each each group he does that when they're in team drills he's calling
23:10defense so that's a little different like last year he would just kind of stand behind the
23:13offense and watch the whole thing go now he's on the defense he has the walkie-talkie
23:17he's calling in the plays uh i imagine his meeting time has to be less with the offense i think
23:22he's
23:22probably you know he has to be doing more with the defense but this is why he brought brian duker
23:26here too because duker knows his system and duker can kind of handle a lot of the defensive meeting
23:32stuff if he does want to go to the offense and things like that but i'm sure it's a little
23:37less but
23:37it hasn't been noticeable in what he is yeah i guess i'm still i'm still a little mystified about
23:44your answer here on frank reich i mean the guy took this job no one else was chasing him to
23:50be an
23:50offensive coordinator right like i understand he wasn't at stanford anymore at this time either
23:55right like they didn't have him on his staff so he was kind of just out there so i think
24:00frank reich
24:01still needs to be able to prove he can be an nfl coach in my opinion like there's real questions
24:06about
24:06him he's not well there's real questions if he could call an offense still cause okay yeah yeah
24:11but i don't think frank reich is going to go i need to prove myself like i think tanner angstrand
24:14had to prove himself like to get another like if he was going to stay i think in the literal
24:18sense
24:19frank reich gets fired if i think if frank reich gets fired next year he's going to go live with
24:24his wife on uh you know and retire and be be content does anyone else not find that a little
24:29scary
24:29that the jets might have to pick another quarterback with aaron glenn and frank reich next year we said this
24:33when the hire happened though we kind of knew the writing was on the wall how long is frank reich
24:37going to be here i'd be shocked if he's here more than two years now listen i i grooming i
24:44see what
24:44you're next off i see what you both are kind of saying here i'll say something prove i think proving
24:49himself i don't know if frank reich is looking into the future i don't think he sees himself coaching
24:55when he's 67 68 but i get what you're saying where he's got to prove that he can call an
25:00offense of
25:00course like i mean for you guys i think for jets fans for us yeah i mean i don't believe
25:05in this
25:06guy i understand that part i'm talking about frank reich's mentality is not i have to go out and prove
25:10myself like frank reich has a super bowl ring like he's not thinking younger younger coaches think i
25:16have to prove myself old guys are just like yeah screw you if you don't think i can do it
25:20i i don't
25:21care what you think like i understand jets fans going i'm not sure whether i believe in this guy
25:25like he has to prove it to me i understand that point i'm talking about frank reich's mentality is not
25:30i'm out to prove that i can coach like he's he's done a lot of stuff in this league already
25:36because i think what ryan's saying though it is a little scary when you think about a guy
25:40sort of on his coach on his last stint like i'm thinking of being on a beach in hilton head
25:46in a few years yeah well but he's here i mean yeah but i'd say chan gailey chan gailey was
25:52that guy
25:52right yeah yeah and and he had he had the best year of any of the coordinators since shoddy
25:58yeah i mean also rex was trying to make anything happen at the end of like that he was trying
26:02to
26:02extend his run with the jets at that time too that was bulls bulls that's right yeah that's right
26:08bulls hired him that was his first coordinator yeah i'm thinking you know i get him confused
26:12with marty morningwig yeah a little bit so do i yeah two old white guys calling offense over there
26:17that's basically what it is um you know what ryan coordinators come and go all the time though
26:21especially with the jets especially with the jets and the offensive coordinators don't stay more
26:25than two three years in most spots man they move around all the time wouldn't it be nice i think
26:30you said this yeah uh in a couple episodes ago wouldn't it be nice to have coordinators that other
26:34teams are chasing after you of course that's all i i just no one's chasing after either of these guys
26:40after this year all right i know maybe maybe ryan duker i don't know if glenn's defense is really
26:46good maybe maybe they'll say who's the car who's the cardinals offensive coordinator right now
26:52who is the car no is angstrom no no he's not the falcons who who's the cardinals offensive
26:58coordinator their head coaches oh it's um uh i know who it is my brain's not working
27:03it's lafleur brought him in yes yes unbelievable we all know the floors call on that yeah lafleur's
27:11calling the plays we all that is crazy actually another one that was here yeah you got michael
27:15two former jets that's unreal guys the cardinals are also a hot mess just like the jets too if we're
27:21being honest with ourselves right now too so you just said teams pursuing your guys you didn't say
27:25good teams pursuing your guys there you go your offensive coordinators there in power you know what i
27:31hope in my professional career i can be as good at what i do as nate hackett i'll just tell
27:36you
27:36friends in high places keep getting jobs friends in high places it's a good lesson it's a good lesson
27:42to be a good person and nice to people that's a good point absolutely facts yeah uh all right so
27:49speaking of the quarterback spot too uh we got some news uh brandon soresby even though he got the
27:54injunction he filed for he's actually entering the supplemental draft if there is a supplemental
27:59draft because that has not been confirmed yet but he is choosing to forego this upcoming season of
28:04the ncaa in the latest turn of the soresby situation so cause there's a lot of information
28:09out there and i think it's hilarious that every single media pundit immediately goes jets should
28:15be all in on him jets should be taking soresby that's the quarterback they need give up a first
28:21round give up no one said that we have three of them no everyone's saying second round picker on but
28:26anyway i know i know cause first off let's say the let's say the supplemental draft does happen and
28:31this guy is available would you in your professional opinion think that the jets would be interested in
28:39looking at a quarterback like soresby it's early right so i i made a lot i wrote a story about
28:47this
28:47this week and i talked to a lot of people and it's very early in the process so they're going
28:53to go
28:54through the process and seeing like you know just so many people understand he's applied to be in the
28:59supplemental draft the nfl now has to approve that application if he's going to be in this i don't
29:03know if anyone else has applied to be in a supplemental draft so they have to approve it there is
29:09a feeling
29:10among people in the nfl that the nfl is not just going to rubber stamp this and let him play
29:15this year
29:16and so one option would be to say no you can't enter the supplemental draft like you knew this at
29:21the
29:21time of the draft that this was happening he chose not to enter the draft we're not going to let
29:25you
29:25in like you have to show a reason why you have to be in the supplemental draft that way he'd
29:31be kicked
29:31into 2027 or the nfl they could suspend him um but you know kayshawn booty was not suspended so
29:40uh that's going to be the pushback from him and his lawyers if the nfl does want to suspend him
29:46but there is a definite feeling in the nfl that this guy is not going to be available right away
29:51the other thing i think you have to consider if you're the jets or anybody else is like let's say
29:55you draft him the supplemental draft will be in late july be right before training camp he's not
30:00coming in in august like i'm not sure what you're gonna get out of him this year because p i
30:08hear i've
30:08heard this argument of like just bring him in and see what you got and then make a decision
30:12next year right like if you want to drop to quarterback next year but like is he going to
30:15be ready to play right away he he won't have had the spring you know that's tough that's tough for
30:21a
30:21rookie especially at that position how many reps is he going to get you know what can you do with
30:26is he actually going to play this season so my gut feeling ryan is the jets will not go after
30:32him
30:32now do they take a flyer and say like we're going to bid a six-round pick just in case
30:38no one else
30:38bids right maybe they do that but there's also a little bit of a circus element that comes with
30:45this right i can't picture aaron glenn wanting to have a backup quarterback and possibly like a third
30:52string quarterback who's going to be asked to do press conferences right and who we're going to be
30:57asking him about brendan soresby all august like i can see that driving him crazy if the talent is good
31:04enough i guess you would pass that but i also think too this idea of people saying well he would
31:08have been a first round pick this year like if he would have been a first round pick this year
31:11he
31:11would enter the draft he wouldn't have transferred to texas tech so let's make that clear yeah yeah i
31:15agree there's no way that guy's going back to school if he's a first round total this year so
31:19yeah so uh yeah i i think there's a lot of questions here i think there's a lot there's risk
31:25with uh you know is he going to face a gambling suspension at some point in his career you'll be
31:30worried about that i spoke with matt miller the other day from the sbn and he said the jets should
31:35absolutely not be in this they should not go after him like they have i kind of agree with him
31:41too in
31:41this idea they have set everything up for 2027 yeah it's not worth blowing that up for brendan
31:47soresby uh they have kid clubnick who you know is the guy that i think they want to explore
31:52hit you let him play a lot in the preseason so long-winded i would be surprised if brendan
31:59soresby ends up on the jets i was telling ryan this cause soresby's talent in a way reminds me
32:06a little bit of someone like a drew aller in what they can do on a football field because sometimes
32:11soresby looks awesome other times he looks awful there's really not really an in-between there
32:17aller's similar to that so he is to what cause is saying or alluding to he's a project and if
32:24you're looking at 2027 you're not going to have enough data this year to make an assessment of
32:31him are you just going to give up a third rounder because he's a backup right so here's the argument
32:36why you would give up a third round pick there is no guarantee that third round pick is actually
32:40going to give you value in the next five to ten years when if i can yeah if i could
32:45tell you with
32:46that third round pick that you would give up for a soresby that's a lottery chance of this kid
32:50developing into your franchise quarterback uh to a degree ryan but no no it is a lottery ticket
32:56that you were trying to cash in a third round pick when is he going to show you his chops
33:02though
33:02like is it going to be with the third team in practice because i agree yeah i mean i would
33:06start
33:06him at if you want like a game at the end of the year if i'm being honest with you
33:10cause is 100 right
33:12you don't know the timeline of how much this kid's going to get practice reps yeah learning the
33:16offense all that no one has any idea how long it's going to take for him to digest all those
33:19things
33:19but let's say he does develop right and shows that he can absorb the offense yeah and work his
33:26way to be the backup yeah maybe at the end of the season you give him a game or two
33:29if you're really
33:29out of the playoff spot and there's nothing else to play for and see what you got in the kid
33:33and then
33:34you go into 2027 saying at best we have a backup quarterback at worst we can cut him because he
33:40was
33:40a third round pick like there's nothing really of value there in my opinion because you're you're not
33:45drafting really a starter the third round it's a depth piece at most like that's really what you're
33:49getting out of the beginning but you you hope a third round pick becomes a starter right you're
33:53hoping but yeah yeah you're you're you know you can get a good player in the third round like that
33:58that's you're you're you're kind of you know it's first and second round guys you want to start
34:03immediately i've always viewed third round you want them to play special teams the first year you
34:06want them to start the second year though like that you're you're looking at them you know as a do
34:11you want az thomas to start like you're hoping he's a starter not over the guys they currently have
34:15over that over him wow but you're hoping he develops into a starter though aren't you when
34:20they dropped an az thomas he didn't go well that's a depth piece he'll he'll never get on the field
34:23like you're like you're hoping he's gonna be a starter i mean depth piece gets on the field
34:26like in a rotation that's basically what a depth piece is really is for you guys like early on but
34:31like man you're hoping i mean third round picks you gotta hope that they develop into starters like
34:35that's that's the way you can't just rely on first and second round picks so i don't think it's just
34:40the throw away um i also just think the jets are not the organization to do this uh i think
34:50for soresby i think he needs to go to a team that's got a really strong history culture that
34:59they can develop him and hope he can play in 2020 like pittsburgh to me makes a ton of sense
35:05other than that they drafted quarterbacks in the last two years that's the only problem
35:08the rams too make a lot of sense team like that or the the 49ers yeah or the seahawks like
35:15teams
35:15that have you know and then you let them sit for a little while and maybe you got something down
35:20the
35:20line i don't think the jets and the browns uh the cardinals like these teams that have just
35:27been wandering the quarterback wasteland for a while i don't think that's the perfect spot for him
35:32um but it's gonna be interesting to see what people bid i know people are saying second round i
35:38i don't know man i think there's a lot of risk i think there's a lot of risk involved too
35:41with
35:41the gambling and the gambling thing is going to scare a lot of teams um you know and of course
35:46i i saw
35:47like oh 32 teams are of course there's nothing else to do this year so like every team should
35:52explore this like that what else are you doing in july there's nothing else to do so they should
35:57all have scouts there and and explores and i'm sure the jets are going to talk about it um i'd
36:01just be
36:01surprised if they went down this road yeah certainly something to pay attention to here in
36:06july as if if there is a supplemental draft will the jets be a part of the bidding process we'll
36:11find
36:12out obviously over time because we hope you enjoy your time off uh it's going to be a while before
36:17the next time we speak to you we appreciate you as always for hopping on here discussing all the
36:21things jets um it's going to get real here in less than a month or a little bit more than
36:26a month
36:26i should say just one of their months they'll cut it short and cause please for us take a little
36:31vacation you deserve it man come on it's that time just a little even a weekend go to like the
36:36poconos or something you know something like that why not i gotta go look at colleges with my son
36:42and he's gonna be a junior in high school so we're gonna look at colleges shout out that'll be the
36:46summer because we appreciate you as always thank you and uh we'll catch up with you next time
