00:07the new york jets are almost there to start the 2026 season this is your training camp preview
00:13here for gangs all here i'm your host ryan sampson but that's my guy brian costello our
00:17jets beat writer uh coz we're three days away from rookies uh six days away from veterans uh
00:24reporting uh what's this vibe what's this feeling like for you as you're preparing for yet another
00:29jets training camp i think let's let's go let's get started it's you know it's a lot of talk ryan
00:38right of all spring and winter and um by this point of the year you're just like you're talked
00:44out i i want to see something and training camp is the next thing to see and then then it'll
00:49be
00:49pre-season and then the season will be here yeah uh i think before we get into this cause i'm
00:55i'm
00:55curious for you how many years now is this for you in terms of jets training camps that you've
01:01covered now you love asking me that question ryan i do this will be this will be camp 16 for
01:07me wow
01:0816 that's a whole that's a that's like a teenager's lifetime right there cause i mean i i know it's
01:14also it's also the drought ryan as people like to point point out to me my first training camp was
01:20coming off of the lockout in 2011 and the jets were the they people were talking about the jets
01:26being the super bowl team and um you know jets eagles was a popular super bowl pick that year
01:31because that was the eagles dream team when they got out and spent a lot of money and the jets
01:36were
01:36coming back off of two championship games and so yeah it's been a long time ago now yeah but look
01:42i think it's always important to be reflective before you start another training camp with new
01:47players and new faces to get to know and and really like get face to face with them i i
01:53it's it's
01:54always important to appreciate you know what you've been doing and how long you've been covering this
01:59team yeah that's amazing and we get we get to do this yeah i mean to do this too yeah
02:06yeah now it's uh
02:08you know i will be complaining during preseason games like i always do because preseason football
02:13is not real football i don't know despite what anyone wants to say uh but yeah i mean it's pretty
02:19like if you told 12 year old me that i was going to be able to watch football practice every
02:24summer
02:24and get paid for it i that that's pretty mind-blowing when you step back and think about it and
02:29you have
02:29to remind yourself of that when it's 98 degrees with uh with 90 percent humidity and you're standing out
02:36there uh for two hours you know but yeah it's it beats having a real job for sure uh and
02:43look there's
02:44a lot of talking points like you said and we're about to get some answers here hopefully but i think
02:49we got to start with the geno smith full circle reunion right for the jets and the fact that aaron
02:55glenn and this front office decided to trade for him this offseason from the raiders um him stepping
03:01back into florin park uh now as an established veteran quarterback compared to his his start of
03:08his career when he was first with the jets and getting drafted by them how quickly do you think
03:12he can master this offense with frank reich and and ultimately run this offense in training camp
03:20i think it'll be quick ryan i mean that that's why you get a guy like geno right he's a
03:23veteran
03:24think of all the systems that geno has been through at this point you know starting back with
03:29marty morningwig back in 2013 and then you know he's when there was chan gailey here uh he goes to
03:36the giants with ben mcadoo and you know the chargers and then the seahawks and he's had the
03:42raiders plenty different coordinators plenty of different offenses and that's what you like when
03:46you have a 35 year old quarterback that's the advantage is that they can learn the offense quick
03:49and the expectation is he'll be able to run the offense um will it always be pretty no that that
03:57you
03:57know you know you know with geno you're going to get some interceptions but i think they can have
04:02an offense that looks functional and is going to look better than what they had last year with
04:07justin fields yeah i mean that makes sense i i know that's that's like a such a low bar right
04:13the justin fields offense from last year um but i also wonder for you how how are you going to
04:20pay
04:20attention to or what are you going to be looking for when geno is first trying to connect on 11
04:2611 or
04:26seven on seven with garrett wilson right because like that's the important one it feels like he
04:30has to have a connection with the number one receiver i know but that's yeah you know that's
04:35the guy that you want i know but here's here's where i struggle right yeah is training camp is hard
04:41it's a hard thing to cover right because we're there every single day you guys want all the information
04:46you want to know the stats and every all the information there's a lot about training camp that fools
04:52you and garrett wilson what have we done the last however many years right 2022 uh garrett and zach
05:01wilson this is the connection that the jets are going to have for the next 10 years wilson to wilson
05:05right fast forward a year later aaron rogers and garrett wilson this is going to be the guy who
05:12unlocks garrett wilson aaron rogers is finally you know they they look great in training camp
05:17fast forward to 2024 aaron rogers and garrett wilson are bickering in practice remember that
05:22storyline they're they're fighting in practice does it mean anything does it not mean anything
05:26turns out it kind of meant something they they did not see eye to eye that season then last year
05:31oh here comes the ohio state connection justin fields and like we sort of pump all that up i almost
05:37think the geno thing is better like i i don't think we're going to be harping on that as much
05:42ryan i think
05:43i actually think this training camp is going to be about the guys around garrett more than it's
05:47going to be about garrett i think we're going to leave i think we're going to kind of just garrett
05:51have highlight catches that make you know we'd be like storylines that day but i don't think we're
05:56going to be so focused on garrett i think we're going to be focused on ad mitchell i think we'll
06:00be
06:01focused on omar cooper i think we'll be focused on the tight ends i think we kind of know what
06:06garrett is
06:06when he's healthy and i don't think that's going to be the major a major storyline okay uh and then
06:12i
06:12think the final thing with geno is you know do we see the 2020 do we see more of the
06:182022 version
06:19of geno when he was in seattle and had that great year are we going to see more of what
06:23we saw in
06:232025 with the raiders which was one of the worst team in football last year uh i know a lot
06:30of that
06:30had to do with him being sacked the most in the nfl last year with the raiders this is a
06:35better
06:35offensive line you would think uh with more continuity around him so what is your sense or what do you
06:42think what do you think geno can be this year yeah i think somewhere in between ryan okay 2022 is
06:48a
06:49long time ago in football world right think about 2022 and just think about the jets where they were
06:542022 and that's a long time ago so i i don't think we can expect that and and the seahawks
07:00were a pretty
07:01good team uh obviously they were on the verge of a super bowl a few years later so they were
07:04they had
07:05some they were probably a better spot than the jets are right now however the jets are better than last
07:10year's raiders uh you talked about the offensive line they're definitely better there really outside
07:15of brock bowers he had no true weapons on that raiders team i think we feel like the jets have
07:20more weapons here uh so you know i i do think he's in a better situation than he was last
07:26year so i would
07:27think somewhere in between ryan is where where it lands uh you know i have always we called it the
07:32gino coaster back in the day and i i still think it's the gino coaster he's a guy who has
07:37really high highs and really low lows um i think you're going to experience that this season and
07:43you know we'll see where they come out of it on the other end is what's what happens more often
07:47yeah yeah for sure uh and i would love to see like you said how he connects with these other
07:53weapons
07:54uh let's talk about the backup quarterback spot because i think that's a story you know that really
07:59is going to be highlighted here and it's going to show its true colors especially in training camp
08:04with the the rookie and clay k club nick uh they have brady cook they have bailey zappy
08:11do they have enough cause at the backup quarterback spot i know it is difficult to find a good backup
08:17quarterback because most backup quarterbacks are supposed to be backup quarterbacks otherwise
08:21they'd be a starter um but do the jets have enough to trust that what they have currently behind gino
08:29i don't think so um i think the number two quarterback probably isn't on the roster
08:33yeah i think we need to see what happens with other teams well who's who shakes free you know i
08:39could
08:39definitely see a darren muji trade on august 28th right before cut down you know that he he some some
08:46team out there is you know going to cut you know the saints are going to cut spencer rattler or
08:51the eagles are going to cut tana mckee or you know they we some of these teams have three or
08:55four
08:55quarterbacks they're not going to keep them all does he swing a trade for a later round draft pick
09:00for a backup quarterback i i think kate club nick is going to be a big big talking point during
09:06camp
09:06and definitely the preseason games i think he's going to be the highlight of the preseason games
09:09honestly ryan for from a storyline perspective um i think he's got a shot at winning the job i think
09:15that's just a tough ask for for a fourth round pick uh as a rookie um and i don't have
09:21much faith in
09:21the attitude guys yeah i mean kate also struggled to finish up uh minicamp because the back injury
09:26right he was dealing with towards the end so yeah you want you know you want to see him obviously
09:31stay
09:31healthy because this is a real shot for him like you're saying to maybe potentially earn that backup
09:36quarterback spot uh a name i heard thrown around if the eagles were to get rid of him with andy
09:40dalton the familiarity with frank reich system would that make sense you think as a fit for yeah for
09:46the i think any i think you you can pick any of these teams that have like four quarterbacks
09:50and say anyone like well and i guess not any i have to look at all of them but like
09:55anyone who
09:55has a little experience and shakes free i could see it yeah and dalton's definitely i don't know why
10:00the eagles would have acquired dalton this offseason to then to then cut them but uh or trade them but
10:07you know i i you you never know what's going to happen in these situations uh let's flip to the
10:12defensive side of the ball right because because this defense was a complete and utter disaster last
10:18year uh they have imported a ton of talent both in free agency and through the draft uh but i
10:24think
10:24we should start with aaron glenn taking over as the play caller here uh this might be a little bit
10:30different for him in running this training camp because he is going to be calling the defensive plays
10:34so what should jets fans or what are you going to pay attention to early on in training camp
10:40with glenn running the defense yeah i'm interested to see just the mechanics of it and and how he
10:46how he manages to do that and be a head coach i think that's tricky when you're the play caller
10:51um
10:52you know but obviously a lot of a lot of people do it uh especially on the offensive side of
10:56the ball
10:56more than defense so uh i'm curious to see you know is he how does he get involved with the
11:02offense
11:02and then yeah whatever we can discern from what he does in training camp which isn't easy
11:07in terms of scheme um you know how he's deploying especially the defensive line interests me how he
11:14deploys them there's a lot of guys there ryan and i think he could go you go a lot of
11:18different ways
11:19with different combinations uh and i'm interested to see you know is will mcdonald david bailey on the
11:25field at the same time much uh you know how how much what's tamandre sweat look like so um and
11:32then
11:32the secondary i think d'angelo pons is an interesting guy does he get work on the outside is he
11:37strictly
11:37an inside corner and then what happens with nation right and az thomas uh you know how does he deploy
11:43them so you know i think i'm not sure how many answers we'll get in training camp ryan as far
11:49as
11:49aaron glenn you know we need to the games are when you really count but i'm curious to see what
11:55the
11:55defense looks like and how competitive they are with the offense in the team periods because i do
11:59think now the offense is ahead of the defense on paper in my opinion so i'm curious to see what
12:05those competitive periods look like yeah uh and there certainly will be position battles we can get
12:10into that a little bit to talk about but uh i do want to ask you about the middle of
12:15this defense
12:15demario davis returns for his third stint with the jets uh shifting jamie and sherwood off to the
12:22off-ball linebacker spot what are you looking to see from demario davis is it just a veteran
12:27leadership but also he's going to make an impact on this defense because he could still pay at a high
12:32level or you know there is that concern about his age and the fact that he is up there and
12:38he's
12:38you know he signed a two-year deal with the jets this offseason yeah for a lot of money i
12:43mean they
12:44gave him they gave him a nice contract for for somebody who's 37 years old uh yeah you're looking
12:48are there signs that he's dropping off at all um and again i'm not sure we'll get those signs in
12:53training camp or come in the regular season but i think everyone talks about his leadership that's
12:58not a question you know what you're getting from him off the field on the field right now becomes a
13:02question because of his age and if you get the same guy that he was new orleans last year i
13:06think
13:06you're good he played really well but at some point his play has got to drop off it's just what
13:11what history tells you and father time is undefeated right so is it this year is it next
13:17year is it you know in two years when when is he going to drop off um but yeah i'm
13:23not sure if
13:24we'll get that answer in training camp as much like here's the other thing ryan is he he has been
13:27incredibly durable yeah in his career like he plays every game he doesn't miss much time when does
13:33that change because that's usually that's when guys you know think about the guy who was in that
13:39just spot previously cj mosley mosley yeah yeah all of a sudden his body started breaking down
13:44and that's when things kind of changed for cj and so like you know can demario be out there every
13:49day
13:50in training camp is he going to be out there practicing do they have to give him time off
13:53uh can he avoid the nixon bruises that that come in training camp i'm curious to see that about his
13:59durability uh and then jamie and sherwood this is a big year for him you know coming on to year
14:06two now
14:06in the new extension that he got uh over a year ago uh can he rebound in this defense now
14:13that
14:13demario davis is taking over as pretty much the the quarterback of the defense yeah i think there's
14:19a lot less pressure on him there was a ton of pressure on him last year because of the contract
14:23he had a new coaching staff uh and then he was the guy that he had the green dot you
14:28know he was the guy
14:29in the middle he was whereas like the year before everything he did was kind of like gravy because
14:34you didn't know what to expect and then when mosley got hurt it was like oh wow sherwood's
14:38playing pretty well like then if he was in that weird spot where it flips from you're underrated
14:45to you're overrated and last year kind of you know had a tough year so i don't think there's as
14:50much
14:51pressure on him i think the thing with sherwood that you need to see this can he be better in
14:55coverage he was just so bad in coverage last year and teams teams just ran play action on those guys
15:01so much toward the end of the year and it you know they did players called bad eyes he had
15:07bad
15:07eyes he just was not in the right position a lot he got sucked in on the fakes he talked
15:12about it
15:12he's been working on it he knows that's an area he has to improve so i do think sherwood could
15:16have
15:16a bounce back year because he's just in a different situation this year yeah he really is uh and you
15:23would love to see him reach that potential again that he had a couple years ago because if he does
15:28and you have the davis leadership on defense and they are maybe a little bit more disciplined
15:32with davis leading the way it could it could really help that defense and and maybe create
15:37some more turnovers like you said in coverage would help um speaking of turnovers let's talk
15:41about the secondary uh-huh minka fitzpatrick he is the new addition as a safety here for the jets
15:47defense uh he's gonna be paired up with andre cisco is the starting safeties you would think
15:52and aaron glenn we know likes to be aggressive on defense according at least from his detroit
15:58lions days if he's going to stay true yeah to what his superpower is uh but what are you looking
16:03from minka fitzpatrick early on can he help create some damn turnovers for this defense
16:09yeah i want to see how active he is in practice and and does he create turnovers in camp you
16:14know
16:14does he does he wreak some havoc like he feels like a guy that can cause some problems for the
16:18offense
16:19and for the jets offense and in camp practices but yeah like it's no secret ryan we're all
16:24going to be waiting for that first interception this season and the longer it takes the bigger
16:29story it becomes uh how long it takes so they got they got guys back there who've been ball hawks
16:36in
16:36their careers and minka has been that guy recent years hasn't been as much but you know the the
16:41steelers and the dolphins used them a little differently the last few years he was a little closer
16:45lot of scrimmage played some nickel um i'm not sure how the jets plan on using him yet like well
16:51we're going to find out but yeah he's a guy too doesn't seem like as much of a vocal leader
16:57like
16:57as a demario davis but can set the tone with the way he plays and obviously he's a very very
17:03accomplished
17:04player um and i think he's got five five five all pros or five pro balls he's he's he's obviously
17:12got a
17:12lot in his career and you know what can he can he bring some juice to this defense i think
17:17that'll
17:17show up early in camp when when they get the pads on yeah for sure uh and and i also
17:23i'm curious like
17:25would you be at all concerned if let's say the jets turned geno smith over more is that more a
17:31product
17:32of geno smith's normal turnovers or hey you know what maybe this jets defense has shown some signs of
17:37improvement or being more aggressive towards attacking the ball i think that would be an interesting
17:41yeah that's always that's always the conundrum in in training camp ryan right i know if you remember
17:46the summer of 21 and the carl lawson training camp before he got hurt right and carl lawson every day
17:52was like just blowing up the offense and you're like oh my god this guy is great he's cool he's
17:58unbelievable and you're like wait a second is beckton bad because beckton is getting abused by this guy
18:05so yeah it's always which way do you want to look at it in training camp though i i'm going
18:09to stay
18:09positive though ryan for the defense thank you they're turning it over if they're turning it over
18:13that's a good sign for the defense and they're going to face quarterbacks that are just like gino
18:17that that throws some interceptions so maybe you know if they they faced them last year and somehow
18:23they didn't get interceptions so if they're taking advantage of situations that's a positive
18:27for the jets well speaking of uh carl lawson and pass rush i gotta talk about guys have you ever
18:34in your time entered a training camp where the number two overall pick it feels like has not been
18:40talked enough and covered enough in terms of heading into his first training camp as a rookie
18:45because i gotta be honest with you all the other storylines with the jets obviously it's been
18:50dominated with the off the field stuff with gino and how great the jets draft was overall but i feel
18:55like there's just not been enough talk about david bailey like i don't know if it's like it's just
19:01because you don't expect as much from a pass rusher in year one or let's not forget this is the
19:07highest drafted player on the defensive side of the ball in in jets history in david bailey and yeah
19:14it feels like we're not talking enough about what he should look like here in training camp
19:19we will ride like here's the thing there's no pads on us right so when you're watching spring
19:24practices line play you can't evaluate it does like he's not doing anything like he's just because
19:31you know his first step looks quick but like we all knew that so the first pre-season game
19:37even maybe even before that maybe some of the padded practices we'll be talking about david
19:41bailey a lot but we we didn't talk about corny williams i mean i know he was the number three
19:45pick versus number two we didn't talk about him other than he had a contract situation going in
19:49the training camp that we talked about but he wasn't unless you're a quarterback probably wide receiver
19:56too like you're you're it's you're not going to dominate the conversation in the spring as much
20:01as the high draft pick uh i i wouldn't make it i i don't think it's a big deal i
20:05think we're going
20:06to be talking about david bailey a ton here in a couple weeks when they're wearing pads and they're
20:10doing padded practices and then in the pre-season games i imagine he's going to play a significant
20:15amount in the pre-season games and and we'll get to see what he can do do you think he'll
20:20be ultimately
20:20the starter right away or he's going to have to earn those reps with osai and mcdonald and enigbari
20:25as the rotation goes it's a tricky thing starter right i i think he's going to have to earn his
20:32role
20:32i don't know if his role is going to be starter i don't know if it's going to like i
20:35don't know
20:35what everyone has planned there because like right he has osai he's got will he's got bailey he's
20:41got enigbari too is in the mix remember they signed him i think for nine million dollars so
20:47he they're gonna have to do some you know he's gonna have to do some maneuvering uh and
20:52rotational play there so i'm not sure uh what bailey's role will be right away i think he'll
20:58have to earn it ryan to be honest with you and when strikes me as that kind of guy looking
21:04you know
21:04we can't say a whole lot about the depth chart of what we saw in the spring where there's rules
21:08about
21:09media coverage um but i'll say this when you looked position by position where there was a question
21:17the tie goes to the veteran with aaron everywhere you looked the if there was a question mark the
21:22veteran was the one getting the starters reps in training camp i mean in spring and otas i would
21:27imagine training camp will probably start the same way and those rookies are going to have to earn earn
21:32the spot it makes sense it certainly does uh cause let's let's talk about position battles i'm curious
21:38who is your biggest position battle that you're paying attention to in training camp
21:44probably corner like i thought az thomas did some good things last year ryan and remember
21:49at this time last year people were really excited about him and pumping him up and there was you
21:54know talking about how great he was playing he played in the spring and and it was always interesting
21:59to me the guys in their second year who don't necessarily like explode in their rookie year sort
22:05of get overlooked going into their second year so i'm curious to see him and you know he's
22:09going to be competing with nation right um who they you know had a great year with the bears last
22:13year in terms of turnovers takeaways but he he also gave up some big plays uh so how does that
22:19go
22:19and then d'angelo ponds i mentioned before does he get some reps on the outside is he a factor
22:23there
22:24you know brandon stevens is the corner on one side we know that it's going to be how they figure
22:29out
22:29the other side and the nickel jarvis brownley figures in so kind of that two three cornerback spot
22:34interests me the most ryan i think that that'll be um an interesting competition it's a lot of young
22:39talent besides uh the established guy in stevens and you could argue brownley but there are two young
22:44guys there in ponds and azri thomas that you want to see if they can earn more playing time and
22:49like
22:50you said what kind of impact they can make early on uh i think for me cause i i i
22:55i think that wide
22:56wide receiver two spot is such an interesting position that we that we're going to be paying attention
23:02especially us jets fans because we've seen the quote-unquote hype of eight of and i mitchell and
23:08what he can do coming into his first full you know off-season program with this new offense with the
23:14jets can he establish himself as a big play threat next to garrett wilson because omar cooper jr was
23:21drafted in the first round and you're wondering again how many how much reps he can get and can he
23:26work himself from the outside into the slot uh so i think that wide receiver two spot is really
23:32interesting that a lot of jets fans are going to pay attention to yeah i think it's almost right
23:36how does frank wright deploy these guys like like does he how many two tight end sets are there because
23:42then that affects how you use the wide receivers does he is he doing 11 personnel where you get you
23:47can get cooper and mitchell on the field at the same time as garrett um that's going to be interesting
23:52to watch they i mean they drafted sadique for a reason right they drafted mason tell last year so they
23:57they have to be thinking about running more 12 personnel and maybe even 13 personnel like that
24:03became very trendy last year with sean mcveigh and the rams so i think yeah that's kind of a deployment
24:08issue more than the competition and adi mitchell is interesting ryan i i went back i finished watching
24:14um the end of the season just probably a month ago i watched last season back and you gotta remember
24:22what he came into in november right he had very little time with justin fields and then a little
24:29bit with tyrod and then it was brady cook for the last four games for him he had really no
24:34time with
24:34garrett i think garrett played one game but he played that browns game but he was injured and i
24:38can't remember if mitchell played in that game um so i think he sat out that game that was right
24:44after
24:44the trade and so he really didn't come into a great situation and you're you're being traded in the
24:50middle of the season so you have to learn an offense i really we saw traits last year but i
24:54don't think we could we saw what he could do so i'm interested to see him now with having this
24:59time
25:00in the system and then having uh geno smith as quarterback and having garrett on the other side
25:07what he can do uh will be will be interesting to see he's probably i mean he's gotta be one
25:13of the
25:13top five most intriguing guys on this team i think if you look at it right easily this is the
25:20from all reports and indications like you said with the traits too his speed is is it's you can't
25:25teach that right like and but he separates separate question is why is he on why is he on his
25:30second
25:31team already it it's a serious question and and he did drop in the draft because you know there was
25:37the
25:38you know he had uh um what was the sugar i think he has the sugar uh there was something
25:44about his
25:45health but at the same time there was also concerns about him off the field too like his character and
25:50that's why it felt like he dropped out of the first round because a lot a lot of people considered
25:54him
25:54a first round talent um but i i if they can discover and i know that's that key term unlock
26:01and i mitchell i mean you'd be setting up this future quarterback room uh in such a great way i
26:09mean
26:09considering you extended breeze hall you extended garrett wilson and if you found a true number two through this
26:14trade that all netted you two first round picks and your number two wide receiver 99 mitchell
26:19i mean yeah what else yeah it's really like when i mean it's a really smart it was really a
26:25smart move
26:25by muji to have mitchell in the trade right to just because it's like he's a lottery ticket and um
26:33and it doesn't work out it doesn't work out he it was just you but but if he can find
26:39something like
26:39you said like yeah they could have a really nice room there and he's a talented guy it's just a
26:45matter of figuring out what's what's missing there and how to get how to fix it and how to get
26:50him
26:50rolling because i uh what is the strongest part of the team i know i have my thought but i
26:58think
26:59we might have the same but what do you what would you say is the strongest aspect slash part of
27:04this
27:04team right now that's a good question um it's probably the offensive line yes that's what i was
27:14about to go to man it has to be now look i think people would get a little carried away
27:19with the
27:20offensive line i think they still need to prove it um but to me the two tackles are legit and
27:26i think
27:26are ascending obviously they're only entering their second and third year so i think they could
27:31have a lot of you know they have a lot more to to show and they're gonna you know i
27:37think membu has
27:38the potential to be all pro um olu showed a lot of progress last year especially the second half i
27:44thought he played better and then i think tipman did some good things last year and now he's going
27:50into a situation where he knows his position it's not being remember he got thrown into that guard
27:54position the first week of the season when avt got hurt so can he can he improve and i know
28:00everyone's like oh my gosh the the center you're not going to have five studs on the offensive line
28:08like that that just you're going to have a weak spot it's okay but i think if they could be
28:13strong
28:13at three of the five spots and they can get good average to good play at center and left guard
28:18i think
28:19you're looking at a good good unit there um they were coached better last year than they were in
28:24the past so i think that helps and um yeah i think that's probably the strength right i completely agree
28:30with you guys the continuity is huge obviously you swatch swapped simpson for parham of a parham i should
28:37say but i think like you said if you believe in the two young tackles and that they are still
28:42ascending
28:43and they can grow into even better players it's going to take you that much further and again i i
28:49i'm
28:49going to re-emphasize i hate that we're looking i'm looking into the future but i also have to
28:53have that eye because we love playing gm here on the jets is if i have two franchise tackles bookend
29:00to protect my future quarterback that you know you're going to draft probably in 2027
29:06it sets you up for a very nice future you would say in terms of i feel secure there in
29:11those spots and
29:12this offensive line can really show itself to be one of the best units in football yeah no i mean
29:18look they it's amazing to say the offensive line is a strength because for years it was a weakness
29:22with this yeah right now it's you know we talked about this before from 2010 when they drafted vlad
29:29ducos in the second round until 2020 when they took mckay back in the first round they didn't take
29:34any offensive line in the first or second round crazy they tried to do it on the cheap they tried
29:38to
29:39patchwork it they got the tail end of nick and brick there for a long time and then it was
29:43like
29:43just plugging guys in there and you know so i think joe douglas deserves a nod he he whiffed on
29:51mckay beckton and abt didn't work out i wouldn't call that a complete miss that was an injury thing but
29:56he he made it a priority and he did get titman and he he did get olu in here and
30:01then
30:02muji uh takes membu last year with his first pick so i i think that's been important to your point
30:08about the quarterback for many times ryan the jets drafted the quarterback and tried to build
30:15around him right sam donald they didn't have a good team zach wilson they didn't have a good team
30:20and it was like okay we're going to get the quarterback here and then build around him
30:22feels like now they're going to they're doing the opposite route which we'll see if it works
30:27so you still got to get the quarterback right but i do think it's a smart approach instead of
30:31throwing a guy out there who's going to get sacked a billion times and who's going to be throwing to
30:38uh you know the guys that sam members the sam doll receivers was was pretty rough you know
30:44rashad perriman is your number one receiver and jermaine curse at the end of his career and uh
30:52uh deontay burnett in chicago remember that one right so like yeah so if you're if you actually
30:59have receivers good receivers it's going to help a young quarterback so i i do like this approach
31:05there's no guarantees but i i do like that they're doing this i do too man uh and look like
31:11you said
31:11we don't know what version of geno smith we can get maybe if it's somewhere in the middle between 2022
31:15and 2025 the jets can win some more football games uh before i get to the head coach and the
31:21the
31:21final part of this show i do want to hate you uh ask you a quick hitter here who is
31:27under the most
31:28pressure or i should say yeah i'll say who is under the most pressure heading into this training camp
31:35as a player that has to prove themselves this year oh as a player because they're gonna say
31:40no no i know i know aaron glens that's the answer for the ultimate question but the player themselves
31:45that is under the most pressure who would you say that's a tough one because the contract
31:54situations are a little resolved well can i give you one sure will mcdonald yeah i thought of him
32:01he's he's playing for a contract and he's trying to prove that he can be a consistent pass rusher
32:06and not just you know the foresight game here foresight game there yeah i guess if you knew
32:13will i don't think will feels pressure no no he takes me as a cool cat yeah he's a cool
32:20cat well
32:21will is just kind of a like roll with the punches type of guy doesn't let a lot affect him
32:26so i doubt
32:27he's feeling a ton of pressure um but yeah that's a good one i i do think you know with
32:32bailey here now
32:35um they're going to have a decision to make on will pretty soon and whether he's going to stick
32:41around um i i'll give you a another one i think braylon allen has some pressure on him that's my
32:48other one and i mean i'm fascinated i i saw on social media the other day someone was ripping him
32:55yeah that was on nbc sports fantasy i saw them yeah yeah yeah and we've gone from last year it
33:01was
33:01like should he start over breeze i remember that that whole storyline like he and now it's feels
33:07like people are wondering whether he should be even be the number two but i think i think braylon
33:13has a ton of talent uh i but it's year three he's got to show it right and obviously it
33:19wasn't his fault
33:20last year he got hurt he shouldn't have been returning kicks um so but i do think there's some
33:26pressure on him ryan to to kind of show his worth this year and you know what what he can
33:32do uh
33:33because it's it's year three and and we've seen the talent but now we got to see production out of
33:38him
33:38completely agree with you cause and i also thought it was outrageous the comments from those guys over
33:42at nbc sports uh i mean they were saying straight up this guy was never good in high school and
33:47college
33:47and i'm like come on guys he was the youngest player like to go to wisconsin like they took
33:52him he was like 17 years old yeah it's part of that whole culture of i gotta say something outrageous
33:58to make it stand out and i just that was a nonsense comment but i agree with you he's got
34:03to prove
34:04himself here prove you can be at least a running back too right like take some of the the pressure
34:08off
34:09of we know breeze is going to be fed because he did get the extension and you want him to
34:12be the
34:12focal point of this offense and get a lot of pass catches as well but also the same time you're
34:17going to
34:17have to give him a breather and let's say he breaks one off for 40 or 50 yards i want
34:21braylon in there
34:22to keep pounding the rock and be aggressive towards that defense that you're going up against and like
34:26oh we're not you thought you just stopped breeze for 40 yards guess what we got braylon out on the
34:30beast he's gonna get the ball he's gonna run it right down your throat that's how i would try to
34:34be
34:34if i were frank right like let's get aggressive let's get after this braylon allen has to be
34:38the guy to to prove that he can be that rb2 for the jets yeah i mean even if you
34:44look at the teams
34:44have the best running backs there's there's a there's always a good second running back yeah
34:48or two right like you know bijon had our year behind them um you know gives in montgomery like
34:53it's there's a number two that's pretty good and they're gonna get series like they're gonna have
34:58to get breeze series off and uh it's a position you don't play every single down and um yeah i
35:05think
35:06that could be a huge piece of their offense if they get braylon allen going and i i still believe
35:10in
35:10i i think he's gonna be a good player uh so i and he looked he looks phenomenal he's in
35:17phenomenal
35:18shape like in the spring he was like he looked like a monster so um you'd like to see him
35:25can he be
35:25like a short yardage back too like can he do that job uh but yeah i'm curious to see what
35:30they can get
35:30out of him one more quick hitter who is your i don't want to say oh yeah who is your
35:38breakout player
35:39that you think can come out this training camp and saying man this guy looked good during training
35:45camp and he might make a real impact i know there's always that fool's goal the training camp
35:48but we'll always be we'll always be wrong i know but who's the breakout guy you're looking at
35:54who's well you're talking like david clowny breakout like a guy like that you know that's like
35:59out of nowhere um i i i don't know i'm curious to see mason taylor ryan can he can he
36:06show up and
36:07can we be like talking about him in training camp and having good practices and then
36:12pre-season games uh you know i don't know what the approach is going to be in the pre-season
36:16games
36:16but can he can he get some run there and make an impact he's a guy to me he's a
36:22really interesting
36:23player because of the sadiq pick and obviously there was a lot of excitement about taylor last
36:29year and i don't think we really got a fair look at him because of the way the offense performed
36:34and
36:34the quarterback play uh you know i pointed this out before his one touchdown catch came from
36:38breeze hall hall so that's tough but yeah i like i i don't know if it's breakout is the right
36:45word
36:45with him but i'm interested if he can have a big camp yeah i think that's a really good one
36:50and
36:51something we should definitely pay attention to uh for the offensive side of the ball for me it's
36:55to von dre sweat i i've talked about him a ton on this podcast i think he's a big man
37:00obviously and
37:01i think you guys might like see him and notice him bullying josh meyer and parham and tipman maybe
37:07even early on you guys go maybe like you're like hmm he's interesting yeah he's a big dude he stands
37:13out on the field when you say me in the spring he stood out so yeah it's that that could
37:18happen um
37:20all right before we get to aaron glenn who is going to be the second leading receiver on this team
37:29second leading receiver on the team i'm gonna i'm gonna go with the obvious that maybe isn't that
37:35obvious ad mitchell i'm gonna go with him okay i i i do think he's gonna come in and be
37:41the number
37:41two receiver i imagine breeze is gonna be a trend it would be the trendy pick there but breeze had
37:4976 catches in 2023 and i think he was down to 30 something last year so uh they haven't made
37:56they haven't been able to recapture that so yeah i'm gonna go go ad mitchell there ryan how about
38:00you who do you think i think you know breeze is definitely the chalk pick but uh i'll i'll be
38:06different i'll say omar cooper jr is actually going to be the number two receiver uh leading receiver i
38:11should say in yards and receptions however you want to total those up i think he this kid the fact
38:16that they traded up to go get him in the first round uh he has a lot of talent and
38:20if they can
38:20again work him into the system he might prove to be that guy for i mean i i also think
38:27about
38:27geno was there when they brought in jackson smith and jigba he didn't have the years that he currently
38:33had you know like last year in the year prior but he was ascending obviously as a rookie so i
38:38wonder
38:38if omar cooper jr can actually become like the second leading receiver on this team i i know ad
38:43mitchell could be that big play threat but i think omar he's got some real talent he can make
38:47he can make some plays for the jets um now let's talk about the head coach right so there is
38:53the
38:54part that we talked about with him being a defensive play caller and now he's got to be that but
38:59on the
39:00same time he is the head coach and he has to manage to manage the expectations and the season outlook
39:04for
39:05him this year because i mean it could get ugly early just based off the schedule for him but then
39:13it lightens up yeah but i i'm curious for you is he just not even thinking about that because that's
39:20the type of person he is and he is like i'm i'm all about football i'm focused on me or
39:26is is there
39:27real concern that the jets if if it doesn't start well with aaron glenn again this year they start out
39:32one and five one and six one and seven they can let him go in the middle of the season
39:37just because
39:37of how much he was on the hot seat it felt like at the end of the year yeah i
39:42mean look i i i don't
39:45think woody johnson is going to want to do that again solo is not woody johnson's guy yeah i i
39:52think
39:53you gotta remember that christopher hired him when woody was in england that it was the very end of
39:58woody's time in england but christopher hired him i didn't know this well at the time i've
40:05subsequently learned that woody just really didn't like salah like he just he he didn't there was a lot
40:13of things that bothered woody about salah aaron glenn is woody's guy like that that was the guy he hot
40:20he
40:20hired him he's known him for a long time um you know when he was he was a scout with
40:27the jets
40:28obviously he was a player he was the end of his career with wood when woody was what bought the
40:32team but he knew got to know him as a scout he really likes aaron glenn and so i think
40:38he's going
40:38to be hesitant to do a mid-season firing ryan i i i know that's there's time there's always there's
40:44i guess there's some scenario you can come up with i'm not going to say he can lose every game
40:48and keep
40:49his job but if he scuffles early on if he's you know whatever oh and four i don't think he's
40:55getting
40:55fired i i don't think it's gonna be as quick as the salah firing i i think he's got some
40:59time here
41:00to figure it out i also think in fairness to aaron glenn when we all talk about the jets we
41:07pretty much
41:07talk about 2027 right as like the time that it can change sure do uh i guess other than carrie
41:14roads on this show none of us are really talking about them winning 10 games this year i think the
41:20conversation and when i see smart jets fans online when they're they're talking about it's like hey
41:26kevin can they somehow win seven or eight games yeah that feels like to me that's like the dream
41:31scenario right now is like can they somehow get there do i feel like that's the one conversation i
41:38think the aaron glenn conversation is like in a completely different ballpark it's like if they don't
41:41win they need to fire aaron glenn it's not totally fair it's because it's he i'm not sure like people
41:50ask him the number how many games i think you just need to see growth from aaron glenn this year
41:53like
41:54certainly there is a number he can't win three games again and keep his job maybe four games yeah
41:59yeah yeah i think you need to but like if it's if it's six games i think you need if
42:05you see growth
42:05from him did he do a better job can you chalk up any losses to his game management to time
42:11to how
42:12he managed the clock how he did timeouts to does the defense improve under him yeah do they actually
42:18look like a good defense can they turn the ball over do they keep the jets in games does frank
42:24reich
42:25have success because frank reich is the guy he brought in does does he have success on offense
42:28does it look like things are turning around this year i think that's what we're judging aaron glenn
42:36on of course yes he needs to win games as well i'm not saying he can lose every game but
42:40i don't think
42:41he needs to win eight games to save his job i think if there are five six wins and it
42:46looks like things
42:46are turning around and things are going in the right direction i think he could come back because to me
42:52everyone's pointing to 2027 already and except for with aaron glenn i feel like the only person
42:58under pressure to win this year with the jets is aaron glenn and everything else is kind of like
43:02hey let's let's let's get to the draft next year um in terms of everything else you're it's well said
43:07cause and i agree with you but look if if he won six games this year it'd be doubling the
43:11total he
43:12had last year so you'd have to take that as a step of progress and i think there are actual
43:17numerical
43:18and and statistical things that you can look at and say is this team actually getting better besides
43:22just the wins the defense is obviously the key factor here they have imported a ton of new
43:28players onto this defensive side of the ball they have changed what they were last year to this year
43:33this season now will those changes work that is for aaron glenn to be the mad scientist in the room
43:39with all these players and make different formations be able to confuse opposing offenses
43:44create real pressure with the new new pass rushers he has
43:47those are the things that you're going to look forward to and then obviously can you get a
43:52freaking interception on defense and turn the ball over because i think you would agree with
43:57this too cause i don't want to see geno smith starting at the 20 or 25 yard line every single
44:02time for the possession on the and i i mean that on our side of the field you want to
44:06be able to create
44:07short fields for that offense to actually get some momentum going in a game you'll be able to feel it
44:13ryan if they're better like it's you'll be able to i i just saw i think warren sharp put this
44:18stat
44:18out the other day did you see this ryan did the plays leading plays leading a game like the jet
44:24yeah the jets were led for 66 plays last season it's absurd 66 plays where and then you go down
44:29the list and you look at the teams that were like playoff teams and some of them were over 500
44:34snaps
44:34500 snaps in the season that they had the lead 66 snaps with the lead is just unbelievable like
44:41that's so that's like you'll you'll know like if the jets have leads in games and they're playing
44:49from in front then they you'll know this is a better team um than what it was last year because
44:54you even you look at their their wins cincinnati was a a miracle win right and then
45:01the cleveland game was a fluky special teams game and then i don't know what happened with atlanta
45:08so tyrod played well i guess that it'll give them that one that one felt you know but that was
45:12that
45:12was a field goal at the end of the game too right that was uh full kick kicking a long
45:16field goal to
45:16win the game the game right yeah so none of them were my point is none of the three wins
45:21were like
45:21convincing like oh wow the jets dominated that game um i can't even remember the last time i said it
45:27walked away saying the jets dominated a game probably maybe that patriots game before solid got fired
45:32but yeah it's been a while since they've just dominated um so i i think you'll know it right
45:37i guess is my point if they look better even yes the stats will back you up but you'll just
45:42know it
45:43if they if they're just doing things like looking functional and and playing normal football complementary
45:49football right like that's that's what you want to be playing it's normal like you just want them to
45:53play normal football like it feels like last year was and he can't have any games like he had in
45:58london last
45:59year like that when you look back at it he didn't have so many games where he was like mismanaging
46:06the game but that one was him that was like one of the worst coach games ever and you can't
46:10have that
46:11you can't he can't have another another game like that and to his credit i thought he got better that
46:16stretch after denver like the end of the season you kind of have to throw out because it was so
46:20weird
46:21but that stretch from like late october to like early december i thought he was doing a better job
46:26managing the game uh and then i think ultimately for you uh
46:33we talk about the pressure he's under right he has to show signs of improvement but at the end of
46:39the day there has to be like that thought of can this guy continue to build upon and be someone
46:46for
46:46the future of this franchise um i i guess my question here cause is like he's got some
46:54winnable games on the schedule and he's proven that he's got his his guys now as as coaches he like
46:59huge turnover on the staff too what what is going to what what is going to be that the key
47:07sign for you
47:08for aaron glenn this year to say this guy's actually improved and this guy actually looks
47:14like a different head coach like what is going to be that thing that you're going to pay attention to
47:18this year i think no moments like london like no moments like that oh great just that the end of
47:25that first half was just brutal um you know does he have no he he seems like he learned some
47:34lessons
47:34just talking to him in the winter in the spring he's been again you know we've talked to we talked
47:41about press conferences a lot last year press conferences don't matter if you're winning games
47:46they don't matter at all that people pay attention to press conferences when you're losing but he was
47:51better with us this spring there was no doubt about it with the media and i think so i that
47:56tells me
47:56he did some self-reflection or someone told him like why are you picking fights with those guys like
48:03that you don't need that and that probably means he got advice in other areas as well like that i
48:09think press conferences are a window into a coach in other areas that are more much more important so
48:15that you know this did he sit down with some of his mentors this offseason go over the things that
48:21he
48:21can improve on it felt like it it felt like he did um but yeah i i just again i
48:26just think you need
48:27to see competency ryan and i think you'll know when you see it it's hard to define but you'll know
48:33it you
48:33know if the jets have the lead for more than 66 this season if the jets get turnovers uh if
48:39their
48:40leading receiver plays more than seven games um you know all these just just crazy crap you could pick
48:46out about last year uh they just need to be a more normal football team yeah yeah and and if
48:53those
48:53things happen i do think they can win that six to eight range like they they can win some football
48:58games
49:00um all right their schedule is not their schedule is not terrible it starts off brutal but then it
49:05gets it starts off brutal yeah the nfl did them no favors like i've said before the nfl could have
49:10done them some favors with the way that they started the season but overall if you look at it in
49:15totality
49:16it's it's not the hardest schedule you've ever seen no it has this has its peaks and valleys i would
49:21say in terms of strengths and weaknesses and where you're going to be and who you're playing
49:25uh and and this is obviously all projections and what you think these teams that they're
49:29going to go against last thing for me cause should i be concerned about the kicker position going into
49:34the season yes i knew you were going to say i mean look i think sanders is a good kicker
49:43i i i probably need to look into this more it happened at the end of the spring so i
49:48didn't why
49:49the giants let him go that's weird to me right because the giants we know the giants need a kicker
49:54too
49:55they just have some they have some rookies but yeah he's if he's right i mean you've seen it as
50:00a jets fan watching he's beating the jets up as a as the dolphins kicker before he's had some good
50:05games
50:06so he might be a you know the answer and and look they didn't find nick folk last year to
50:11august
50:11he came in during training camp so it can be done but that that move is the one move this
50:17offseason
50:17that does not sit well with me ryan that they let nick folk leave in free agency uh i would
50:23have done
50:23everything i could to keep him here now you know the jets say oh he wanted to go to atlanta
50:27he wanted
50:27to kick indoors he wanted to be closer to home but i don't know i i think you would have
50:32been able
50:32to keep them if you really if you really wanted to um and point out the money so uh yeah
50:38i i would
50:38be scared about kicker special teams was the strength of this team last year uh and obviously
50:44a lot of that like you said was due to nick folk being so so solid as a kicker uh
50:48but it's definitely
50:49a position to pay attention to and especially when cause tweets out that this kicker is
50:53oh for three field goals during practice uh but look guys we appreciate you obviously hopping on
51:00here for our jets training camp preview here in gangs all here we're looking do you want the stats ryan
51:04do you want the stats you are you a stats guy in training camp for the kickers yes because i
51:09think that's important uh about the quarterback no i don't think i mean i'll pay attention obviously and
51:15be like all right gino was two for ten and seven on seven that's not great um but like if
51:22there's
51:22like three interceptions in a practice yeah i'd be i'd be a little concerned with what's going on
51:27there but if k club nick is lighting it up that that's the opposite right like club nick versus the
51:31twos yeah he's got four touchdowns today and it's like oh my god the jets found their a real backup
51:37quarterback like here's here's the trick here's my tricky thing with the the stats right because i i i
51:45loathe trading camp and stats to be perfect do you love that more or pre-season games
51:53different different issues pre-season games more about just sitting there but
51:56there's no context ryan right like i laugh when people tweet out like oh he had four touchdowns like
52:03yeah guess what they were working on today red zone they were all there were four touchdown passes
52:08on 10 plays inside the 20 like yeah or oh he had three interceptions well
52:13that period was third one like i've told coaches this before like because some of them get mad about
52:20this stuff and i'm like we don't know what we're watching because we don't have the script
52:26and i've had there was there's been previous jets coaches they would send me the script before
52:30practice and it was so helpful because you knew exactly what they're working on and aaron
52:35glenn did it in the spring one day he told us he goes we're working on third and seven and
52:39longer
52:39today and it was like okay now you have context like oh gino forced that throw down the field well
52:45guess what it was third and ten yep so couldn't check it down yeah he couldn't check it down or
52:50anything like that yeah so you're like so the context we don't always have the context and that's what
52:55drives me crazy sometimes with the training camp i get it i do it i've done it i especially if
53:00there's
53:00a quarterback competition you have to do it i understand that because then they're kind of
53:05on the even playing ground but for gino like i'm not sure training camp stats are going to matter
53:10now kade club nick is going to be the that's going to be the guy um you know but yeah
53:17i i struggle with
53:18the training camp stats sometimes yeah it's tough uh and then obviously people are going to be digesting
53:25the the where the ball is going during training camp meaning like who's getting the most targets is
53:29yeah oh man omar cooper went off today he had four catches he was out targeting uh and i mitchell
53:35and
53:35garrett wilson today or hey kenyan sadiq got five targets today in practice so it's again it's all
53:40about the game script it's all about where they are practicing and what they're practicing i know
53:45that there there's tough situations because the jets are very restrictive on the information and how the
53:51flow of information is getting out there so all we can do here is talk about it talk with our
53:56friend
53:56cause here well this year and this year with the limited number of open practices there's not
54:01gonna be much video out there i'm i mean look i'm trying to hype up the season but it's hard
54:09when the team is being obviously it's under construction it's a different different
54:14year it's different thing but you could also say this team is also under construction as a
54:17roster as well so we're trying to figure it out right like we're trying to figure out for 2027
54:23cause you're the man thank you as always for hopping on here we're looking forward to your coverage
54:27as rookies report in three days and veterans a couple days after that and uh rock and roll man
54:33football starts next week can't wait yep let's go i'll be i'll be tweeting out the seven on seven
54:39stats ryan for just for you thank you guys we appreciate you man
54:44you
