00:41wake up before this morning i had it right before i left so you know it wasn't a win on

00:49ryan but i'm taking some moral victories from you know that i missed the nor'easter and i i uh
00:54i
00:54escaped that at least like you know i'm taking positives from this this game look you're taking
00:58the positives in life as well just not from the game itself uh but i'm curious because i did read
01:03your column uh this morning and and your report card on the team and your thoughts after looking
01:09back at this game now is there reason for more positives to take out of what happened with the
01:16game yeah i understand people that are encouraged i get it like they look like a football team and
01:23it's been a while since we've seen that but i do think people need to take a step back and

01:2812 of the 14 games yesterday were one score games right so what do you think they're saying in
01:34tennessee this morning ryan they're going well we should be two and one if we didn't give that drive
01:39to the eagles and if we went down and scored in the giants right so you can play this game

01:44losses all the time and you know we've seen this before where there's teams that just lose a lot of
01:49close games at some point the jets have to win one of these games and you saw washington beat
01:55seattle yesterday and we've seen what the raiders are doing they're three you know like there are
02:00teams out there who are in a similar boat to the jets that are winning games now and so maybe
02:07it
02:07happens like maybe it's going to start they're going to take off right now they've got a bunch of games
02:12in a row here with the bears having a backup quarterback then you know and the browns the patriots
02:18look flawed and the dolphins and the raiders maybe the best team on that list right now
02:23there's winnable games here so maybe they take off and start winning but we need to see that ryan like
02:27i i understand being encouraged by yesterday gino played very well guy played very well sadi played
02:32very well but at some point they've got to win these games i completely agree with you uh i think
02:40there's there's a point of of you watching the game and going hey they're in this they got a chance
02:46to win the football game can they close out though the evidence has shown that they've not
02:50had shown that ability to close out and win these close score games right now um but just as they're
02:56oh and two in these one score games it can flip in the next two to three games like you're
03:00saying and
03:00they can win those three games or one score games and they completely changed the narrative now aaron
03:05glenn talked about that how close they are to closing that gap yes do you do you think i like

03:14oh yeah how close in your opinion do you think this jets team is to closing that gap
03:21and taking that next step in their progression
03:25it's tough like the gap thing is tough for me because like i just said
03:30teams win in this league all the time like it's a week two week league like where
03:34do i think the commanders closed the gap with the seahawks like no the seahawks are clearly a better
03:40team the commanders found a way to win yesterday so i think the jets can win these games we just
03:46have to see it uh they were they've been so close these last two weeks and different you know they
03:51play them from ahead in green bay against green bay and then yesterday they have the comeback but
03:56you know ryan when they were driving on the field i'm like they're gonna tie this they're at least tie
04:00or if he goes for two they're gonna win this thing i i like i think about the bucks game
04:05last year
04:06right and we're we talked about that time even after the blocked field goal touchdown you looked
04:11at the clock a minute 43 like they're gonna lose this game the bucks are gonna drive the field i
04:14didn't feel that way yesterday i really thought the jets were gonna score when they were moving the
04:18ball in the lions defense which the lions defense is rough by the way like that that's part of this
04:23equation too that they they i know everyone's like oh the lions are a really good team the lions are
04:27really good offense their defense their defense is tough right now i mean that's the the fewest
04:32points anyone has scored on them is what the jets scored yesterday so that's part of the equation
04:36too but i get it they look functional they're they're playing you know the offense was moving
04:41the ball passing the running game wasn't so good um so i i might they're close to winning these games
04:47ryan yeah i mean would i be shocked if they win in chicago no and i'm kind of waiting around

04:54thinking about this when's the last time you were shocked by a jets win yeah that's a great question
04:59cause i would say it's probably um what the mike i'll give you the one i thought the mike white
05:05year what's that the mike white year i i actually after that i thought when they beat the eagles in
05:102023 is the last time i was shocked right that was a that was obviously rogers was gone and they
05:17they beat them they beat a good eagles team i think the eagles were undefeated at the time
05:21and they surprised them in my life but that's three years ago so like when you know they need to
05:28pull
05:28off one of these shockers right now and uh just haven't been able to do it yeah and i'm not
05:34sure
05:34chicago qualifies ryan if tyson bage is the quarterback that's going to be in the eye of
05:38the beholder but uh it'd be a start like they they've got to they got to start winning games
05:43like you're you're starting to look at the schedule you want them to hang around 500 you know you really
05:48a one in three hole would not be great to fall into two and two feels a hell of a
05:52lot better than one
05:52and three to me no doubt and that's why this sunday feels like a very huge game and a pivotal
05:57point early in the season for how this jets team and record could go this year um i i think
06:04there's
06:04a let's dive into the game itself here too because i think this is going to bring bring some of
06:09these
06:09discussion points about closing the gap for the team i want to start with the offense geno smith
06:14like you said looked awesome yesterday i think that was the cleanest i've seen geno play in my
06:19lifetime as a jets fan by far uh probably one of the best quarterback games we've seen from a jets
06:24quarterback in recent years in terms of wow yeah tacking the tacking down the field uh making
06:30the right decisions and he really leaned on his two weapons that we had talked about last week cause
06:34in in the preview show garrett wilson and kenyan sadiq when you look at what this offense was able
06:41to do through the air even without adenai mitchell without the rookie omar cooper and without mason
06:46taylor were you impressed to see how that came about yeah totally like i said i think the lions defense
06:52played a part in it and i think the jets probably could have attacked the lions defense earlier with
06:56some shots down the field they kind of waited till they had to do that late in the game but
07:00yeah i
07:00mean garrett played the best game i've seen him play in a long time he made some amazing catches
07:05right just crazy contested catches the touchdown was a great catch um you know and then sadiq
07:12you saw it with sadiq right right out of the gate the first catch he made where he was kind
07:16of a
07:17stick brown and gino threw it off target and he jumped to his left and made the catch and then
07:21the touchdown catch was phenomenal he was great in the fourth quarter so i yeah i thought it was
07:26an impressive performance especially with no mitchell getting the tight ends involved was good
07:31so yeah the offense you know just not able to run the ball but the passing offense i thought was
07:37really good ryan as good as you could have expected yeah and look and you would hope that
07:41mitchell maybe can make his way back i don't know depending on that finger injury how how long
07:45he could be out still uh but if they can get him back we'll see what happens with mason taylor
07:49and
07:49then the omar cooper hopefully the next couple weeks if the rest of these pieces stay healthy
07:53it really is a nice complement of hopefully weapons that are developing with gino around him uh but i
08:00think the other part of this equation is the injury to breeze hall we don't know how long he's going
08:04to
08:05be out so now you'd expect them to lean more on allen and isaiah davis how does that affect this
08:11offense first part second part because the offensive line really struggled to get people
08:17moving yesterday it's two games in a row they did not look good yeah i the breeze i mean i
08:24don't know
08:24how long breeze is going to be out but let's he's not going to play this week right i'd be
08:27shocked if
08:28he's going to play this week with a you know quad injury i think he'll miss uh and i think
08:34dylan parm
08:34is also he i saw him leaving last night with a huge air cast on his left knee so i
08:39i think you can
08:40write them off for this week for sure how long they're gonna be out we'll see it's a big loss
08:45with breeze i know he hasn't run the ball well i know frankie frankie was on here he'd be yelling
08:49about breeze hall right he did yesterday drove me crazy he's he's still a weapon on the field he still
08:55can you know break play he's a home run hitter you take him off the field they don't have that

09:01right now and i like braylon allen but he's not breeze hall uh and i think you know he's gonna
09:07get
09:07we'll see how he does now in a bigger role but i i don't think this helps a struggling run

09:13not to have breeze back there and not to have parham too because i get it parham you might not
09:19have loved him but he's a starting offensive lineman for a reason and now you're gonna have
09:23jordan meredith in there who's a backup for a reason and uh offensive line depth i think we talked
09:27about this this summer it's as it's a struggle for every team um you know you just saw the packer
09:33sign mckay beckton and lakin tomlinson like you know the teams there aren't a lot of 300 pound
09:39men out there that can do that job ryan so you know maybe you should bulk up and try but
09:44they uh
09:46they it's gonna they had an amazing stretch last year where after they lost abt they had the same
09:52five guys for the whole season that doesn't happen very often so you know they're gonna have injuries
09:57along the offensive line and it's gonna see how they how they manage that going forward here
10:01yeah and i think also you you want your young players that you drafted high to play well and
10:07olu did not have a good game yesterday no uh what are you seeing between him i thought membu
10:13was better yesterday but what are you seeing from olu and membu and the rest of this offensive line uh
10:19just and what they're doing right now oh we just literally got beat yesterday i haven't i haven't
10:25watched the first one i haven't i've just started watching the film and i saw the first one he looks
10:30like he just got beat by uh who is the guy from south carolina i'm forgetting his name uh the
10:36defensive end um but he just got him yeah he just got he just got beat off the ball uh
10:44so you know
10:46we'll see later but the offensive line just looks out of sync to me like it looks like they looked

10:52good in week one it's it's crazy how things flip in the nfl but they just haven't the last two
10:58weeks
10:58look like they they're communicating well that they're playing together um so you know we'll see
11:04i thought yeah i thought membu did well he had hutchinson on him a lot i think hutchinson had a
11:08half a sack maybe but they we didn't see him a lot in the backfield so i thought membu did
11:13a good job
11:14um but i'm curious what what's going on in the run game you know and how they get that fixed
11:18yeah it's uh it right now it feels like defenses are keying up on them on their formations in the
11:24run game
11:24and that these linebackers are activating as quickly as possible when they see these guards
11:28pulling or a tight end pulling um so it it's on obviously frank reich to get this this run game
11:35schemed up and get this offensive line gelled uh because without parham and breeze it's going to be
11:40tough and the chicago bears are no joke on the defense as well uh let's flip to the defensive side
11:46of the ball guys so again i thought first half they started really strong uh in terms of trying to
11:52bottle up and contain saint brown gibbs laporta like they tried their best to maintain those guys
11:59but then the second half i mean jameer gibbs is if not the best player in the nfl he's one
12:04of the
12:04best players in the nfl and you saw that come to fruition but what did you make from the jets
12:09defense yesterday and and how they ultimately performed yeah grading on a curve like i wrote in
12:17my report card because that offense is awesome and gibbs is like him and bijon are the guys ryan and
12:23they he was ridiculous and like i i wouldn't want to try to tackle him i know that because he
12:30was just
12:30so slippery and he just got going in the second half so i don't kill them on that the where
12:37i killed
12:37him ryan is they tie the game 24 24 it's like all right all the momentum is the jets way
12:43and they come
12:45out and they give up a 65 yard drive on four plays and you can't do it like you can't
12:50do it if you're
12:50a good defense like you could do everything else well but if you just have these killer drives you
12:57know they sort of had this against the packers too last week just these killer drives in crunch time
13:02i mean the to slog getting open for 49 yard gain and then gibbs was wide open on the touchdown

13:11that's that's the one to me ryan that that's that i'm gonna bang the jet the defense on that that
13:17that was just terrible and they they came up with a pretty good stop there at midfield and they just
13:22need to hold them hold them down there again and they just i mean they didn't even come close four
13:27places is crazy yeah and that first play of that drive uh you know you saw david bailey get around
13:33the tackle but he had he just didn't bend quickly enough and he was just out the reach of jared
13:38goff
13:38hits tesla downfield for the big gainer and from that point on it was it was a drive that just
13:43went
13:44so quickly and and i think because the one thing i am like realizing with this jets defense here is
13:51they cannot generate pressure on the quarterback unless they are blitzing yeah they got home for
13:55only two sacks yesterday and both sacks were on the blitz and right now when they're trying to rush
14:00with four they just are not getting any pressure on the quarterback yeah it's a problem and you know
14:06we talk about the interception throughout all the time and it's now at 20 games part of that is guys
14:12quarterbacks are not double hitching you know i remember solly used to always talk about he wanted
14:16the quarterback to take two hitches because that was the key to getting there or them throwing a bad
14:21pass and it's um you know now that like goff was just he he really was just operating most of
14:30the day
14:30comfortably even when they were blitzing they got there twice but he they were getting no pressure on
14:35him i thought bailey had a quiet day uh you know he was in the backfield a few times
14:41i did watching the film i know will mcdonald was probably zero pressures i do think on the demario
14:45sack will will force goff to step up there yeah and and at the sack so he i he wasn't
14:51as invisible
14:53as i thought he was when i was watching it live i thought that was a good play by will
14:56but
14:56he's got to get home too he's been he's been quiet since the first game and they're just not getting
15:03like it's they have all these guys right now losai is back and abare like they just they just
15:09couldn't do it yesterday yeah i mean if you look at it cause uh will only play 22 snaps out

15:15for the defense so it's clear that he is his role is being shrunken down here because of the return
15:21of osai and any barry um the other thing that's becoming of what you just hinted at the bailey part
15:26was a quiet day the jets only rushed him at the quarterback 19 times at a 44 snap uh sorry

15:32played 44 snaps yesterday 19 of those were only as a pass rusher seven of them were dropped back in
15:40coverage which is fascinating when you think about aaron glenn and how he's trying to call this
15:45defense your number two overall pick you drafted as an edge rusher he's being asked to only rush 19
15:50times out of 44 snaps and dropping back seven of those it's certainly an interesting way aaron glenn's
15:57going about this defense early on yeah look i think it's crazy i wouldn't be dropping him in the
16:05coverage but that's not my superpower ryan so maybe maybe i'm wrong i don't know but it's i thought
16:12overall the defense played pretty well yes they did all things considered i mean it's crazy to say that
16:17they're here with 380 yards and 31 points but man that lines that lines offense is is something to
16:23watch it's it's an explosive offense they they averaged 31 points the first two games what they
16:28do yesterday they scored 31 points again it's crazy they scored 31 points in all first three games you
16:32were off by you're off by two points by the way for your prediction last week yeah i know and
16:37that you
16:38know ryan i felt like the offensive coordinator that's running the ball down the field getting
16:43yards a carry and then they called a double reverse pass at the goal line
16:47because like 31 24 is the traditional football score yes and i was right there but i'm like you
16:53know what let's get cute and let's make it a little bit different than 31 20 and i hate picking
16:57the
16:5824 17 you know 28 21 the usual ones every week so i'm like yeah 30 23 that's a fun
17:03score i had no
17:04idea where you got that score either because i said to frankie the post could show me frank you know
17:09kaz was only up by two points and he goes well wasn't i go 30 23 i don't know how
17:13he came up with
17:14that score when he predicted yeah you know i was trying to get cute and i got burned you know
17:19the double reverse pass um look i think the other part about this defense too besides the pass rush
17:25not getting home with four is they need on the back end guys i think they need fitzpatrick back
17:32there to help them in this and the secondary was good by the way i don't think they were blown

17:36they didn't get exposed for like too many explosive plays downfield but i think like there's an element
17:43that fitzpatrick brings that maybe lessens the load on that secondary level uh also in the middle
17:48when it comes to sherwood and and davis who sherwood looked really rough yesterday in past coverage
17:54again gave up i think nine catches on like 10 targets it was crazy what the stats i saw on

18:00yesterday i just they need someone like him and pounds only played two defensive snaps yesterday guys
18:05so can can ponds getting more playing time and fitzpatrick hopefully making his return here soon
18:13would that help boost some of this defense that they that they they're at right now yeah i think
18:19when you look at the jets defense right now the criticism i have is they just don't have playmakers
18:24yeah right they don't have anyone out there who's like just gonna make a play when they need a big
18:30play and fitzpatrick has been that guy during his career is he still that guy we'll find out you know
18:36maybe he hasn't been as much in the last few years as he was earlier in his career so we'll
18:41see that
18:41and ponds was that guy in indiana uh right like and that's what the jets are hoping they're getting
18:47there i would be surprised if you don't see more ponds this week because brownlee i didn't think had a
18:53great game i thought that was on brownlee when gibbs scored the last touchdown brownlee was blitzing
18:57and drew breeze i think on the broadcast said he had to peel off there when he saw the running
19:01back coming out he didn't so to me it's time to see ponds and i would think fitzpatrick would be
19:06ready this week right just because they didn't put him on ir so they must have thought he was going
19:12to be back in two to three weeks so maybe this week maybe next week but we'll see wednesday when
19:17when we get the injury report how much they do this week but i would think if you get fitzpatrick
19:21and ponds back there those are two potential playmakers that could change this defense and
19:25maybe you know force some turnovers and got an interception you know one yeah 20 games is
19:34incredible isn't it unbelievable it's unbelievable i got i yeah i it feels like a foreign thing to me
19:40than interception like the art of the interception watching a jet ski like i was like have they even
19:45been close no that's what frankie and i were talking about yesterday like there's there was nothing
19:50close yesterday where they were like i think there was one deflection yesterday um i think
19:56belton got his hands on the ball in the end zone the back of the end zone there was one

20:00belton deflected the ball but it wasn't close to an interception so yeah it's i was talking to a
20:06lions beat writer before the game and you know we were talking about the team and stuff and i said
20:10this is 20 games without an interception he was like what like people it blows people's minds when you
20:17say it it's it's because we there's nothing really to ask like we haven't we stopped asking
20:22erin glenn about it because what the hell are we going to ask at this point but it's just such

20:27insane stat but it's an insane stat but like we're talking about here like i i again i know we
20:33should
20:33be more positive because the jets played well yesterday but but if you're being a realist like
20:39cause said the start of this episode look at this team they need to start winning football games if
20:44they wanted to win that football game yesterday cause they got to get after the quarterback with
20:48four to generate pressure to have that hitch to force the errant throw to get the interception
20:53which will flip the entire momentum of the game and they just haven't had that moment yet through
20:59three games it's only three games and that's where i'll i'll say the other part where it's like
21:03they got 14 more of these to make an opportunity to flip these games and and have a great defensive
21:09play
21:09happen um special teams cause has taken another step back again two weeks in a row on the kickoff
21:15return specifically what what are you seeing here is this just because mccrary ball is out with an
21:21injury and kiko is out with an injury and that's really affected how they've covered on on kickoff
21:26coverage that's really part of it but it's been weird right like they just haven't been good in
21:31coverage that was such a good thing for them last year so i'm curious if they tweak personnel i think
21:36they're you know juggling pieces right now and that's hard but it's just been it's been ugly and
21:43you know if you watch dan campbell's locker room speech you know he mentioned how big the
21:49field position was and he gave uh the returner a game ball for setting them up at midfield he had
21:55two big returns uh then the other piece of it ryan is they're not getting anything out of their return
21:59game and i'm wondering you know isaiah williams played like 60 snaps yesterday or something like that
22:0650 something snaps like is that if i'm at receiver is that affecting him as a returner that he's
22:11playing so much offense right now last two weeks he's had to play a lot so it's it's really was

22:16strength last season was one of the only strengths they had and now it's flipped i do think it's
22:20fixable i i think banjo is a good coach uh they're going to get players back i think they'll figure

22:26out but it's been a problem these last couple weeks no doubt and like you said it flipped field
22:30position and that affected the game two weeks in a row now of how the jets have have had to
22:34battle with
22:35short field field uh for the opposing team and that's affected their defense and the position
22:40they're put in um final thought guys third week in a row aaron glenn gets the ball right before
22:47halftime and they still don't come away with points yeah uh this is like a repeat occurrence man with
22:54this team getting the ball before half i didn't think this one was on him as much ryan like they
22:59had
23:00some penalties right if i'm remembering correctly that took them out of it um i did think you know
23:05they should have probably spiked the ball instead of taking the time out at that one spot um just
23:10got in my play sheet it was at the 41 yard i'm pretty sure it was at the 41 yard
23:14line it was first
23:15and 10 they could have spiked it with one timeout left still yeah it took the third time out with

23:20seconds left um yeah parham got a holding penalty that made it first and 20 then uh mclean had their
23:28offensive pass interference i really thought the penalties were what killed them there but they
23:33gotta get point you gotta at least get a field goal there this is three weeks now where they've
23:36had the ball and a half and come away with nada uh that's not good and then the other one
23:41right i
23:42thought was when they were down the seven yard line then there was two sacks in a row and they
23:46had to settle for a field goal where it felt like you know you're gonna get a touchdown there
23:50they're leading points on the board for sure but we weren't gonna be negative ryan you're gonna be
23:55the negativity are you where are you on the moral victory scale so i think it's ridiculous that there
24:01was so much narrative put out yesterday of the moral victories you lost a football game uh the
24:05lions are a better football team like i i fully acknowledge that they are a high power offense
24:10but their defense stunk and they could have i feel like the jets again like you said left points and
24:15opportunities on the board where even at the end of the game i was like i think they're gonna go
24:19down
24:19and score a touchdown here and tie this game up just because they felt like they were building momentum
24:23on the offensive side of the ball i think sadiq is a true weapon again it's only game three in
24:29his
24:29career but that was really impressive what did i mention to you last week i said when's the last
24:33time we saw a tight end actually attack the seam attack the middle of the field and sadiq was that
24:38piece for them in the middle of the field now for me as a positive take that and bring that
24:44into next
24:44week's game plan don't ignore sadiq don't let him fall out of game plan uh you know for for how
24:50you
24:50want to attack on offense so i i think there are some positives here the offense look really really
24:56impressive but i still think there's a there's concerns about the defense the pass rush uh and
25:03the fact that they still can't get that key turnover cause that we're so desperately needing
25:06as fans and for this team to cause that turnover get the short yardage for the offense get that
25:12touchdown and you've completely flipped the script on the game we just haven't seen that moment and i
25:17don't think it's happened in aaron glenn's tenure here yeah no i i'm with you and you know but
25:24like there's time it's early in the season so we'll see if they can do it here in the next
25:29few weeks
25:31um you know and then and then the only team i would say is about right now is the dolphins
25:36like
25:37beat the dolphins handily the browns look better i didn't watch them yesterday but i saw the score
25:43um the raiders are clearly better than we thought so you know can they handle their business against
25:48those teams that are kind of similar to them in their weight class and then they gotta steal one
25:53of these against the better teams yeah and look the jets are a better football team than last year i
25:57have no doubt about that but no doubt yeah and i love that they're going to be competitive in these
26:02games but like you said in the beginning of this again win one or two of these games against an
26:07opponent that you're surprised hey they came away with the win here um i i know i i said was
26:11last
26:12like the one thing you talked about like positives if gino if it's a big if if he continues to
26:19stack
26:19these games because where it's like 250 275 300 yard passing games multiple touchdown passes not
26:26turning the ball over could he play himself into that small one-year extension to be the bridge to
26:33that rookie quarterback they take next year yeah the i think he could be kirk cousins right he could be
26:39the guy like the raiders right now kirk cousins and they're very happy to let fernando mendoza sit
26:44on the bench i do think he can play himself into that role right nothing beyond that and maybe maybe
26:49gino has better offers i don't know maybe someone does come along and offer him a multi-year deal
26:55so but yeah i mean i don't think he's going to be able to play like he did yesterday every

27:00week it's just i don't think he's that consistent like i've said how long i thought this season
27:05there's gonna be some games where you're you're wowed by gino and some games where you want to you
27:10want to ship him off after the game so yesterday was a wow game um but he's played better than
27:15i
27:15thought right like he did not not turn the ball over like i know he got pissy about the interceptions
27:20with us last week but this is a guy who led the league in interceptions the last few years and
27:24he doesn't have one right now it's amazing he had the turnover at the end of the game
27:29i'm not killing him on that chuck clark blew him up yeah but he uh he's been he's been much
27:34better
27:35than i expected and yesterday was really impressive no doubt no doubt uh and we're looking forward to
