00:18That's our Jets beat writer, Brian Costello.
00:20And that's my guy, Frankie Viteriti from U Stadium.
00:22Week 16 of the NFL season for the New York Jets as they face off the New Orleans Saints.
00:27They are not going well this season for the Jets.
00:30They face the Saints team that's coming off a couple wins here.
00:33Tyler Shuck looks pretty good.
00:34We'll break down that matchup in a little bit.
00:36We'll do some picks on it.
00:37But we're going to discuss at the beginning of today's show, guys, before we get to anything else,
00:42the Jets quarterback situation.
00:44Kaz, how are you doing today on this Friday?
00:46And what's the latest on the quarterback situation for the New York Jets this week?
00:51Yeah, nothing really new, Ryan.
00:52We're recording this before Aaron Glenn speaks to us on Friday.
00:57I imagine we're going to know more here in a little bit about who the backup is going to be.
01:01But they're rolling with Brady Cook again.
01:04So another week of the rookie.
01:06Yeah, another week of the rookie.
01:07And it seems like with Tyrod popping up with the knee now along with the groin,
01:12he might not be the backup.
01:14So does that mean we'll see Justin Fields possibly, potentially dress up for this weekend's game?
01:20Yeah, I would think so.
01:20I would think he'd be the backup.
01:22You know, if – I don't know how – what Tyrod's knee injury is.
01:26That just showed up Thursday on the injury report.
01:28But that's not good when a new injury pops up on a Thursday.
01:31So Fields was limited.
01:34I would think, like, you know, Fields can go full practice Friday.
01:37He'd be the guy on Sunday to be the backup for Shuck.
01:39And I just want to get your overall take on Brady Cook's performance from last weekend.
01:45You know, look, I thought it was nice to have that one touchdown drive with Adonai Mitchell, the touchdown.
01:51I thought he looked pretty solid there.
01:53But overall, what was your takeaways from Brady Cook's first start?
01:56Yeah, I thought he got off to a really good start.
01:58You know, six for six, the touchdown.
02:00I mean, he looks more competent than I expected, to be honest, right?
02:03I thought throwing an undrafted rookie, I thought it would be more of a disaster than it's been.
02:09I know he had the three picks.
02:10Really, the one was terrible in the end zone.
02:14The other two were sort of, you know, I thought the first one was a bad throw that got away from him.
02:19And then the third one was just trying to make something happen at the end of the game and kind of forced it there.
02:24So, you know, it doesn't look like the offense is just, you know, not functioning with him.
02:29He's been able to move the offense.
02:30It's just hard because everything else has been so bad around him.
02:35They haven't been able to stop us the run at all.
02:37The defense, obviously, was terrible last week.
02:40So, it's hard to get a good read on it because the game is getting away so fast.
02:45And when he was playing against Miami, it was 21-0 when he came in the game.
02:49Yeah, look, Brady Cook finished 23 of 33, 176 yards passing, one touchdown.
02:53He did have three picks.
02:54So, almost hit that rookie record with Mark Sanchez that we had talked about on last week's episode.
03:01Frankie, now looking back at it, looking at some of the film, Brady Cook's performance.
03:06Are you in favor of the Jets just trying to get an evaluation of this guy the rest of the way?
03:11I mean, yeah, I am.
03:14And I actually think Kaz's prediction might actually come true this week that Justin Fields actually plays.
03:19So, Kaz, I think that might happen this week.
03:22But, listen, Brady Cook is who Brady Cook is.
03:26I think he played better than some people thought.
03:29I don't think he's somebody that we want to necessarily have as even our backup next year.
03:34But he's someone to have on the roster.
03:35He's somebody that you could bring in on a week-in and week-out basis to compete, especially if there's an injury that's happened.
03:43He's got a decent arm.
03:44I mean, he can make some throws in this league.
03:47He can move around a little bit.
03:49He's got some legs to him.
03:50He's not unplayable, which, I mean, that's like the bar that we've set for ourselves here.
03:56But he can play.
03:58So, I mean, that's a plus.
03:59We have a quarterback that can at least come in and throw for 130 yards, right?
04:03Like, that's a positive, I'd say, right?
04:06Yeah.
04:06The offense looked better with him.
04:08And it did a lot of points under fields this season.
04:10Yeah, it did.
04:11You're right.
04:12I think the one thing I will say, and maybe this is just a timing thing, he was really behind, I felt like, on a lot of receivers.
04:18Especially outside the numbers.
04:19I felt like there were a couple throws he really, really missed badly.
04:23And maybe that's a rhythm timing thing because this is a rhythm and timing offense with Tanner Engstrand
04:28where, you know, you make your read and you got to hit the guys in the windows that you have to throw.
04:33So, I'm looking to see, like, if Cook can improve that timing part and get guys in stride more.
04:40One thing I do want to highlight here, Kaz, is, look, fields was given the starting quarterback job at the start of the year.
04:49And I had asked you a couple weeks ago, and Frankie just alluded to it.
04:52I mean, will we see fields again the rest of this year actually playing for the Jets?
04:56If he is the backup, I mean, I know he's just an injury or way of playing, but it just feels weird, Nick, if he's going back out there
05:05and the offense just somewhat looks better with Cook or Tyrod.
05:10So, do the Jets have any really reason to put fields out there?
05:17Well, I mean, I just think this week if he's the backup, he's, like, who else is going to be the backup?
05:23You know what I mean?
05:23I think they clearly don't want him to be the guy.
05:28Like, they're giving Brady Cook these things, and, like, you know, it's a pretty damning statement
05:32that they gave this guy $30 million and they're playing an undrafted rookie over him if he's healthy.
05:38But, you know, I don't think they really want to play him.
05:40But, like, the situations I've referred to when I said fields is going to play again
05:45are ones like Greg McIlroy getting a concussion, so Mark Sanchez had to play again, right?
05:49Or situations, like, where Zach Wilson had to come in because Mike White got hurt
05:55or Tim Boyle flopped, so they had to go back to Zach Wilson.
05:59Just, like, really bad situations.
06:01I don't think the Jets have a plan to play Justin Fields.
06:04I just think it could happen.
06:05Yep, I hear you.
06:07It's going to be fascinating, again, to see what happens with Cook this week against the Saints.
06:12Saints are playing, like I said, they're playing a lot better football here.
06:16Fascinating is strong, Ryan. Fascinating is strong.
06:18So, I'm just being at straws here, guys, to find some kind of things to talk about this Jets team.
06:25I mean, look, what's Sunday's date? December 21st, right?
06:31I'm sure there's some last-minute Christmas shopping people have to do, right?
06:35There's stuff to do Sunday where you don't have to watch this game, folks, if you don't want to.
06:41Well, this game –
06:41Kaz, we have another battle with the remote this week, you think?

06:45Boy, this one should just be – this one, you shouldn't even pick up the remote, I feel like.
06:51This is as bad a matchup as I can remember, guys.
06:55This is a rough one.
06:57Well, look, this is a game that will help –
06:59Half the beat doesn't even go to the game.

07:03Because of holidays?
07:03I can't ever remember.
07:05No, because the companies don't want to spend money for a game against a four-win team and a three-win team.
07:09It does.
07:10It's not a cheap ship trip.
07:12The world is expensive.
07:13Well, it is – it's going to determine some of the draft positioning, I feel like, this week.
07:18Like, it will have some big impact in terms of if the Saints stay in that mid-round range, if they get another win, they'll obviously move up.
07:26And then the Jets have a better chance of landing a top-five, top-four pick if they lose against the Saints here as well.
07:32Well, I do want to transition to gang sounds off, fellas, because new interim defensive coordinator Chris Harris spoke this week.
07:41Now that he's taking over responsibilities as the defensive coordinator, I'm going to play this sound here for you guys,
07:47and then we're going to react to it and talk about Aaron Glenn here as well.
07:51So we'll talk about Steve.
07:52Steve's a good coach, a good friend of mine.
07:55I learned a lot from him.
07:56So it's unfortunate, ultimately, that this happened, but this is on all of us as a coach and staff.
08:03I want to thank AG for putting me in this position.
08:06But, again, it's not about me.
08:09Our focus is on getting ready to play the Saints and trying to put the best product out there on the field.
08:15Look, he obviously is trying to say the nice thing here about, you know, Steve's my friend.
08:20I've learned under Coach Wilks, and it's not an easy position he's being put in himself.
08:26You know, you can't really take too much pride, but, like, at the same time, it is a chance for you to prove yourself as a defensive coordinator for a young guy in Chris Harris.
08:34But, Kaz, is there any chance that the Jets can show some signs of, I'll call it life, or some slight improvement over what has been absolutely disastrous performance from the defense?
08:46Yeah, they're better this week, right?
08:49I mean, New Orleans, they're down a lot of players.
08:52They're missing their running back.
08:55They're missing a receiver.
08:57They're talking about, you know, practice squad guys coming in.
08:59They're obviously playing a rookie quarterback in Tyler Shuck.
09:02You know, I know they won last week against the Panthers, but I watched that game, and the defense won that game for them.
09:08You know, the Saints defense played pretty well in the second half and kind of won that game.
09:13So, this is not Trevor Lawrence.
09:16This isn't even the Miami offense, you know, with HN and that running attack that they had there.
09:22So, they should look better this week.
09:25I think the two weeks after that are going to be tricky when you have the Patriots and the Bills.
09:30I think that could be a hard spot for Chris Harris.
09:32But there should be signs of life this week, Ryan, yes.
09:35And, you know, is there any doubt that the interception is coming this week now that Steve Wilkes is out of the building?
09:39Like, they're going to get that interception now.
09:42That's funny to look at it that way.
09:45You know, Frankie, for a guy like Chris Harris, you know, I do wonder.
09:51It's kind of like an awkward spot for him, but, like, this is kind of like a resume builder for him.
09:55Do you think he has anything to prove for that full-time defensive coordinator job for the Jets?
10:02Definitely, man.
10:03I mean, yeah, this is his showcase.
10:05This is his chance to do, you know, a better job than what Steve Wilkes did, which isn't really saying much at this point.
10:13But you're going to see them try to stop the run.
10:16There's really nobody there in New Orleans that you're really fearful of running the football.
10:21But they're one of the worst teams against the run.
10:23You're going to see what those linebackers can do.
10:25I think he'll bring more blitz pressures.
10:27And you'll see a few different things.
10:29I know Glenn mentioned the game plan and how it's not going to be, you know, drastically different now because, really, you have only, what, three or four days of preparation with your new D.C.
10:41But I think Harris is going to want to show what he can do that's unique and different.
10:45This is his chance to show to the rest of the league.
10:49This is who I am.
10:50This is what I was able to do when I had all the keys on defense.
10:53And I think we'll see some unique things.
10:55And I think they're going to have a few interceptions, by the way.
10:58Like, I actually think the defense was – oh, they're going to have a few, Kyle.
11:03I'm calling Drain out two or three interceptions this week.
11:05This is going to be like the coming out party.
11:07I'm telling you.
11:09The defense is going to play –
11:10The defense is going to play really hard this week because they were obviously not happy with Wilks defenders or they weren't happy with how the defense was being run.
11:22They didn't want to speak last week.
11:24Kaz mentioned that on your guys' show on Monday that there was a vibe with the defense that seemed down a bit.
11:31They're going to want to come out and play ball.
11:33They're going to be running all over the place.
11:34They're going to be getting picks.
11:36You know what?
11:36I'm going to make a prediction.
11:38We're going to have a pick six on Sunday.
11:41You ready for that one?
11:42A pick six.
11:44I'm telling you.
11:45They're going to be playing football on Sunday, man.
11:48They're going to be playing like they were, you know.
11:49They're going to have fun.
11:50I vaguely remember the last pick six the Jets had.
11:55Do you remember?
11:56I don't.
11:57I thought it was – didn't they call the one Sauce had back with a penalty?

12:08I'm so scarred I forget about that.
12:10Like, you know, like I just – it's so much sloppy.

12:13Look, look, Frankie's going on a roll here about how the Jets defense is going to somehow improve dramatically this weekend.
12:19What I will say, and this is the larger discussion, fellas, that we have to discuss, is the Aaron Glenn, right?
12:26Like, he now has to make a decision on who is going to be his future defensive coordinator.
12:29That's one aspect in the offseason.
12:31The current discussion around Aaron Glenn right now is how much blame should be on Aaron Glenn for how bad the defense is.
12:37Because, Kaz, we heard Aaron Glenn's comments, I think, after the game about, you know, hey, is there a chance that you might, you know, re-evaluate who's calling defensive plays?
12:48Yeah.
12:48Because after the loss against Jaguars, he goes, look, Steve is doing his system, and we're going to let him run his system to the players, and we're going to continue to believe in him, support him, whatnot.
12:57Day later, he fires him.
13:00There's a lot of heat on Aaron Glenn now because you kind of, I want to say, place the blame on Steve Wilkes, but it is your scapegoat in terms of, we're firing him because clearly he was not doing a good enough job.
13:13Stats prove it.
13:14Lack of turnovers prove it.
13:15The performance obviously proves it.
13:17But you came over as a former defensive coordinator, as a guy that got a lot of credit for having a strong defense in Detroit and whatnot.
13:28But how much blame should Aaron Glenn get for the lack of how this defense has really performed this year, Kaz?
13:36It gets a lot of it because he's the guy who hires Steve Wilkes.
13:40And, you know, I wrote about it this week, like, maybe Glenn should be calling the defense.
13:45Like, it's strange to me when these guys become head coaches and then don't do what got them the job.
13:51Like, that helped them get the job.
13:52The Jets were looking for a leader, so that was part of it.
13:55But, you know, Aaron Glenn wouldn't have been on the radar and head coaching circles if his defenses didn't play well in Detroit.
14:01And I talked to a bunch of people, and, like, one of the stranger aspects of it is there's, for some reason, a lot of defensive coaches don't call the plays.
14:11You look around the league, I counted four. Todd Bowles, Mike McDonald, Dan Quinn is calling them, and Sean McDermott calls them.
14:20But a lot of defensive coaches don't.
14:22But what they do is what Sala did when he was here, or what Todd Bowles did when he was here.
14:26It's their system.
14:28They just have somebody calling the plays during the game.
14:30But it was clear that was Robert Sala's system that Jeff Ulbrich was calling.
14:33That was Todd Bowles' system that Casey Rogers was calling.
14:36This was like, Glenn was like, no, do your thing, Steve.
14:39Like, you know, forget what we did in Detroit, which was weird, because the reason you're in line for the job is because of what you did in Detroit.
14:48I completely agree with you, Kaz.
14:49It didn't make sense for why Aaron Glenn wasn't running his own system, and that he let Steve Wilkes kind of, I don't want to call it on an island, but use Steve Wilkes' system here.
14:58And clearly it was a failure.
14:59I did do some research, though, Kaz, before we came on this show, about Aaron Glenn's previous run as defense, as a defensive coordinator.
15:06Because I don't believe, after doing this research, that Aaron Glenn was as good of a defensive coordinator as he was getting praise for in Detroit.
15:16The stats are terrible.
15:17The stats are terrible.
15:19They're horrible.
15:19Yeah.
15:20But like that, if you watch the Lions last year, they had so many injuries.
15:23And the defense, they did a pretty good job there.
15:27But the stats are, I think he ended up being top 10 in scoring last year, but the stats are terrible.
15:33But like, you know, he's on the radar because the Lions were 15-2 last year.
15:41So the defense had to be doing okay.
15:43The defense finally performed last year.
15:45Like, they have a lot of top 10 stats last year.
15:48But his three previous years in Detroit were all bottom of the league, and they're not good.
15:52And that's where I question, like, all right, this is also an elite offense you're playing with on the other side of the ball.
15:59Like, there's credit to go all around.
16:01I think Aaron Glenn, though, might have been hired more to be the leader and the CEO type that we had talked about.
16:07He absolutely was.
16:08Yeah.
16:09He was.
16:09But I think the reason he was on the radar screen, like, if the Lions had been 2-15, he could be the greatest leader in the world.
16:16No one's interviewing for a head coaching job.
16:18Like, you get those head coaching interviews when your team does well, when your unit does well.
16:23But, yeah, he was absolutely hired.
16:25The Jets wanted a CEO.
16:26They didn't want the X's and O's guy completely.
16:29Like, that's part of, like, Liam Cohen wasn't interviewed, and Ben Johnson wasn't interviewed.
16:33That's part of the equation there.
16:36But I do think he made his bones on the defensive side of the ball.
16:40He did, but, again, it just wasn't a good showing from him in his previous run.
16:46So, I wonder, could this defense even take a step to be good next year if they import a bunch of talent and bring talent on the defense?
16:56And can they actually improve?
16:58So, Frankie, do you have confidence that Aaron Glenn can actually improve next year?
17:01I mean, listen, to this conversation we're having, and I'm not trying to go back in time and say anything here.
17:10Like, I'm not trying to, like, be a revisionist, but I never thought Aaron Glenn was a top defensive coordinator in football.
17:19I never did.
17:19I just didn't.
17:20They did bring him in here to be the CEO, and he wants that role.
17:24I don't think Aaron Glenn thinks that he's a great defensive coach.
17:29I really don't.
17:30I think he thinks he's a great leader of men.
17:32I think he thinks he's a great CEO.
17:35But I don't think Aaron Glenn has confidence in his ability to do the X's and O's stuff at some elite level where he even wants to put himself in that position.
17:44I think he wants somebody to do it for him, and he wants someone to do the offense for him, and he's going to have the team all pumped up and ready to go on Sunday.
17:53That's why he was brought in here.
17:54And I think that's what he thinks he's best at.
17:57I'm telling you.
17:58I mean, listen, the numbers speak for themselves, Ryan.
18:01You posted them on your Twitter the other day.
18:03I mean, they're pathetically bad, honestly.
18:07Like, maybe he shouldn't have, you know, he shouldn't even have been considered a defensive coach to a degree.
18:14This is where I'll push back slightly, Frankie.
18:17He's like, because, and this is something to push it to cause.
18:21He told you guys in the media and us as the fans in multiple press conferences, I want to have my hand in the offense.
18:26I want to have my hand on the defense.
18:27I want to have my hand all over this team.
18:29I know that's a CEO type, but he has told us that he has schematic beliefs in how an offense should run, how a defense should run.
18:37Like, that is the message he has conveyed to us.
18:41And am I wrong in reading it that way, Kaz?
18:43And the fact that he wants his hand in those things, that's a poor reflection on him right now.
18:47Yeah, he's the head coach.
18:51You know, like, I mean, I remember when Sala got fired and I said to somebody, you know, it's not his fault that, like, Nate Hackett was a disaster.
18:58And I said, well, he hired him.
19:00And I said, yeah, you know, that's fair.
19:03That's what the head comes with being the head coach.
19:06The buck stops there with everything.
19:08So, yeah, I just, I'd be careful with the stats, though, right?
19:11Like, the Jets defense last year was top five in 2024.
19:15Was it a top five defense when you watched it?
19:19Not against the run, but they were good in a lot of other areas, in my opinion.
19:23Top five in 2024.
19:25This is when Ulbricht was the head coach.
19:27They were top, they were a top five NFL defense.
19:30Was that in yards allowed, points allowed?
19:32Like, what were the top five?
19:33Yeah, yes.
19:34Yards allowed.
19:35So, they always say, oh, they're top five defense.
19:37Yeah, I mean.
19:38Like, just this, those, the stats, the stats get a little skewed by game situations.
19:43And, like, with that Jets team, they were down by so much.
19:45Like, they were, the other team would basically run the clock out starting in the third quarter sometimes.
19:50And so, I just, I'm not saying Aaron Glenn is a defensive genius, but that's how he rose through the ranks.
19:56Like, that's how he got here.
19:58Is, he might, you know, Dan Campbell must have thought he was a good secondary coach.
20:02That's why he hired him as defensive coordinator.
20:04He lasted four years in Detroit because Dan Campbell thought he was doing a good job with the defense.
20:09He got head coaching interviews.
20:10I get it.
20:11Like, the Jets hired him to be a CEO.
20:13I'm with you.
20:13They hired him to be the leader.
20:15But the reason he was even interviewed was because people thought highly of the Lions' defenses.
20:19I think it's just hard when you don't watch every single snap.
20:22Like, I find this with the Jets.
20:24People have misconceptions about the team because they look at stats and they don't watch the games.
20:30It gets, it gets a little tricky.
20:33Context matters a lot.
20:34Yeah, go ahead, Frankie.
20:35Go ahead.
20:35No, one quick point about Aaron Glenn in Detroit.
20:40You're not going to have an easier job as a defensive coordinator than being the defensive coordinator of those Ben Johnson, Lion run teams.
20:48Like, those offenses.
20:49I'm telling you, that is as easy of a job as you're going to get.
20:52And I'm not trying to downplay what he did in Detroit.
20:54But those offenses were putting up 34, 35 points a game.
20:58I mean, like, those, you're going to get bailed out by your offense all the time because they're putting up those many points.
21:04Now, he did deal with a lot of injuries.
21:07And, again, Brian, to what Kaz was saying, I do think they felt that this guy was a leader of men.
21:13And I know we've said that a million times.
21:15But, like, that's why they hired him.
21:17They didn't hire him for his defense, I don't think.
21:20Well, I think.
21:21I mean, that's how he got the job, obviously.
21:22That's how he got the job.
21:23So, again, that's why I – this is an interesting conversation to me because how bad the defense has been, how bad it was with talented players like Sauce and Quinton.
21:34And you gave the contract to Sherwood and you chose to stick with Michael Clemens and you chose to stick with Jermaine and Will McDonald and tell us that Will McDonald will get coached like he never has before defensively.
21:45It's just – it's been bad all around defensively.
21:47And context does matter, Kaz.
21:49I hear you.
21:50Don't get too much in the stats.
21:52I pulled the stats even though for third down situation, red zone situations, he's bad in all of it in his run with the Lions.
21:59So, that's where, like, I question what was he really great at defensively.
22:04But I guess this is where we push forward.
22:06And the pressure is now on him to hire the right people to be there defensively for them.
22:11So, do you have any sense or is it still too early for us to even start naming candidates for the defensive coordinator job?
22:18No, I think it's too soon right now.
22:20I don't think they're focused on that yet.
22:22You know, they're not – that'll happen, right?
22:25As soon as the season ends, you'll start – they'll start with the names, you know.
22:29But I think the names that are out there are ones that make sense that people are talking about.
22:34But I don't think anything's real yet.
22:37Yeah.
22:38Certainly something to watch for as we get into the offseason.
22:40All right, let's transition to the game itself.
22:44Like Kaz said, it's going to be a tough one for fans to really even try to digest and watch.
22:48But we do try to ask each one of you to come up with some key matchups for this game.
22:52If you got them, I would love to hear them.
22:54I'll start with Kaz.
22:55What's your key matchup for Jets versus Saints?
22:57It can't be the Jets fans versus the award again.
23:00No, I won't go there again.
23:02I think it's Brees versus the Saints defense.
23:06Can they get something going in the running game?
23:07Because, like I said before, it's hard to evaluate Brady Cook.
23:10They couldn't run the ball at all against Jacksonville, which I thought was strange.
23:14I mean, Isaiah Davis had the one long run, but they never really established anything.
23:18Can they – they need to have any success with Brady Cook at quarterback.
23:21They need to get Brees going.
23:24Can they do that against this Saints defense?
23:26That's my matchup.
23:27Frankie, what do you got for key matchup this weekend?
23:32I like – so we have Brees now three weeks in a row as a key matchup, Ryan.
23:36Kaz, Ryan, and I actually had a big argument about Brees on the post-game show.
23:42He's like, stop talking about Brees.
23:43It doesn't matter.
23:44He didn't get enough looks.
23:45He had the knee injury last week.
23:47I don't think he looks healthy.
23:48But am I – Kaz, does he look healthy out there?
23:51I was being a little unfair, but Ryan, he hasn't had a good game in a month.
