00:00Jets roster crunch is coming down the pipe on today's episode of Gangs All Here.
00:04We're going to talk about who's going to make the roster, who's not going to make the roster
00:07with our Jets beat writer, Brian Costello, who will be joining us in a little bit.
00:11Frankie and I will discuss with him also the latest rumors
00:14that the Jets are already looking at their next head coach and quarterback combo,
00:18which is crazy as the season hasn't even started.
00:21Frankie, I don't know.
00:24I think it's a little weird that we're already talking about coach-quarterback combos
00:27before the season starts, but it feels like it's clickbait, man.
00:32Well, it is a little bit of clickbait, but I'll say this.
00:34We've got to start fast, man, because those conversations could happen very soon
00:40if we end up even losing to Tennessee, and I hate saying it.
00:43I hate going that far, but it's a big couple weeks for the Jets
00:46to get this roster together, and it's a huge week one.
00:50Yeah, we'll get Kaz's takes on who's had a strong training camp,
00:53who hasn't had a strong training camp for the Jets this year
00:56as we get ready for their third preseason game,
00:58and before you know it, it's going to be week one.
01:00Stick around for Gangs All Here.
01:09Kaz Frankie, Friday night, the last preseason game for the New York Jets.
01:14They're facing up against the Giants tomorrow night at 7.30 p.m.
01:18Before we get to any of the discussion about the roster cuts
01:21that are going to be coming down and who's fighting for what spot
01:24and some nasty rumors that have been going on about the Jets
01:28on social media right now, we'll get into all of it.
01:30But before we get to any of that, Kaz, how are you doing?
01:33You've reached the end of training camp for the Jets for the 2026 season.
01:37How's it going?
01:38Yeah, I survived another training camp, so it's good.
01:42Now, this is actually my least favorite time once we get past this weekend
01:48because it's like everything slows down Jets-wise.
01:54The players are going to have off next basically Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
02:00They do a luncheon on Wednesday, so we don't see them that much.
02:03So this is a hard part of the year where there's a huge appetite for Jets news
02:08and there won't be much Jets news for the next two weeks or so.
02:13Yeah, look, you're right.
02:15It's definitely that weird period when they go from that last preseason game
02:18to now we're getting ready for week one and there's a two-week buildup.
02:21But as always, there's always news with the Jets for some reason
02:24because people like to start things.
02:26And I do want to start with that, Kaz,
02:29is Jason LaConfora put out a piece yesterday saying that Woody Johnson
02:33is already investigating Mike Tomlin and that he's talked to executives,
02:37that Aaron Glenn is a dead man walking.
02:39I don't know, man.
02:40That feels very clickbaity to me.
02:42I want to get your sense on the situation.
02:45Like the guy is just about to start year two.
02:48This is like his real chance, it feels like,
02:50to put his stamp on this Jets team this year
02:54and prove himself as a head coach.
02:56What's the deal with this?
02:59Yeah, in fairness, I did not read the whole article.
03:02I did get an email from a publicist that kind of broke down the talking points
03:06and had some quotes in there and stuff.
03:07So I think I got the gist of it, but I did not read the whole article.
03:12Yeah, look, guys, Mike Tomlin's name is going to be everywhere
03:15if the Jets are 1-5 or, like, pick your record.
03:200-1 maybe.
03:22Yeah.
03:23Whenever the Aaron Glenn conversation starts in earnest,
03:26of course he's going to be in the conversation.
03:29And guess what?
03:30If the, you know, pick a team,
03:33if the Cincinnati Bengals are moving on from Zach Town,
03:35Mike Tomlin's name is going to be discussed there,
03:37and he's going to be discussed wherever there's an opening at the end of 2026.
03:42Mike Tomlin's going to be the number one candidate for head coaching jobs.
03:45I don't think that's a mystery.
03:46So to me, that's kind of obvious.
03:51The idea that Woody Johnson's doing his homework,
03:53that's kind of nebulous.
03:55Like, I don't know what that means.
03:58Look, Woody Johnson is a guy who the last time he had to hire a coach,
04:01he hired Mike Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman to do the homework for him
04:04and then kind of come to him and go,
04:06present to me who you find, like, present me your findings.
04:09I would have to think if they go down this road again that, you know,
04:13Darren Mugey is going to be the guy doing that job now for Woody Johnson.
04:16Woody does not strike me as a guy who is calling up, like, you know,
04:21coaches who've been in the AFC North and say, like,
04:22tell me about what you thought about Pittsburgh's, you know,
04:28coverages against spread offenses.
04:30Like, so I'm not sure what that quite means.
04:32Are there GMs saying that Aaron Glenn's a dead man walking?
04:36Yeah, there's probably somebody.
04:37I'm sure he said that.
04:38Somebody said that.
04:40I don't think he is.
04:41I think he has a chance here to prove himself.
04:43I don't think the Jets are going to want to reset the organization.
04:48I don't think they ever want to do that.
04:50And if you look at it, just, like, put the roster on paper right now,
04:54what you think the roster will be for against the Titans,
04:58and compare that to what it was the start of last year.
05:02Compare what it was to the start of the year before and how much this roster
05:05has flipped.
05:06Well, guess what?
05:07Now you're doing that again because the next guy might not like big defensive
05:12linemen like Aaron Glenn does.
05:13He might like the small ones, like solid.
05:15They have to do that.
05:17He might want to run a different offense, and they need different pieces,
05:19and maybe he doesn't like this player or that player.
05:22So the idea that they want to restart again, no.
05:25I think Aaron Glenn has every chance in the world to be the coach next year
05:29if things go semi-well this year.
05:32I want you to say, well, I think it's – I think we've talked about it before,
05:36what it looks like for this team.
05:39So, you know, I'm sure Jason had people telling him that stuff.
05:44I don't doubt that.
05:46I just – it feels a little premature to me.
05:49That's the Tomlin piece of it.
05:51The Lamar piece makes no sense at all to me.
05:55Like, honest, just coming – I don't – that doesn't – I don't get that at all.
06:00I don't understand that one.
06:05I don't know.
06:05But the Tomlin one makes – I get where the Tomlin one is a talking point.
06:09Kaz, I was literally – that was my next question to you
06:12was literally about that Lamar Jackson point in that article.
06:17They had said – by the way, am I looking at you?
06:19I'm looking there.
06:19I'm looking there.
06:20I'm looking there, buddy.
06:21I'm looking there.
06:21Okay, I'm just making sure this is a new studio, everyone.
06:23I'm trying to, you know, get my wits in here.
06:25I'm just –
06:26You're breaking the third wall here.
06:28You're supposed to be a pro here, Kaz.
06:29You know, no.
06:31Frankie's making chicken parm in the second one.
06:36You think I'm in bottles of wine here?
06:38Kaz, we're ready for you.
06:39We'll get more Jets memorabilia here, I swear.
06:42No, Kaz, what I was going to ask, and Ryan, with this Lamar Jackson point,
06:47listen, it may not be Lamar Jackson, but do you think there's a chance
06:51that this team will look at a veteran quarterback versus a rookie next year?
06:57I mean, we know Woody Johnson might want to get a little bit ahead of himself
07:00in terms of the allure of, oh, let's look at this quarterback who's established.
07:05Do we want to go down this rookie quarterback path again?
07:08I mean, do you think that's – I think there's a chance.
07:12I think it's possible.
07:14The Lamar piece for me is the Lamar end of it.
07:17The Jets would be interested if Lamar was available.
07:19We know it's not to, but I don't understand why Lamar would want the Jets.
07:24So, yeah.
07:25Look, we've talked about the draft picks, the three picks.
07:28Like, if they fall in a way, Frankie, where you're like, hey, this is not going
07:32to happen.
07:32Like, we're not going to get the quarterback we want?
07:35Sure.
07:36Like, I know Baker is going to be a big talking point in the offseason
07:39if the Bucs don't lock him up.
07:41So, yeah, I can see it.
07:42I do think the scars are still fresh from Aaron Rodgers for this organization.
07:47And I do think, even though, like, Mouji and Glenn weren't here,
07:52I do think there's going to be a view of, like, do we really want to go down
07:55this road again and bring in the veteran?
07:58Now, the Zach Wilson scars, they're not fully healed either.
08:01So, you could argue that this organization has quarterback scars of all
08:04different times.
08:05Yeah, that's true.
08:06But I do think you feel better about drafting your own guy,
08:09developing your own guy, especially if you don't have a history with that
08:12player.
08:13I think, you know, I do think that it's much still way, way more likely that
08:18they take a quarterback in the first round next year.
08:21But, yeah, if all three picks end up being 15 or, you know, worse or something
08:26like that, then maybe you have to look at the veteran market.
08:30Right.
08:30And then, presumably, if the Jets were picking in 15 or later, they would have
08:34a pretty decent season, too, Kaz.
08:36And you'd be keeping Aaron Glenn.
08:37And I just wonder, like, this is part of the thing, too, that you were talking
08:40about, like, would they go after a veteran quarterback?
08:42I do wonder if Aaron Glenn would be more prone as a deep guy.
08:45It feels like defensive coaches are like, I want a more established veteran
08:48quarterback.
08:48I don't want to groom a new rookie quarterback coming in the league.
08:51And I wonder if Aaron Glenn falls under that bucket because I do wonder about,
08:57like, if he brought in a veteran guy and let's say they had a good season
09:00this year, they might feel like they have the makings of a team that's
09:03emerging.
09:04And you think about the Lions, right, Kaz?
09:06They weren't able to make their ascent until they got Jared Goff in the
09:09building.
09:09They struggled the first year, but then he really took over the reins on that
09:12offense.
09:13And he was an established veteran at that point.
09:15He had already been in the Super Bowl.
09:16Obviously, he worn out his welcome at the Rams.
09:19I am curious, though, maybe not Lamar, but perhaps there's other quarterbacks we
09:24don't even know yet would become available, Kaz.
09:27And if Glenn has a solid season, he might be like, you know what?
09:30Maybe we can go after and be aggressive to get one of those veteran
09:32quarterbacks.
09:33They have a solid season.
09:34Geno might be back next year.
09:35Yeah, it's true, too.
09:36Yeah.
09:37Because all these veteran quarterbacks, none of those are going to be like, oh,
09:39this is going to be the guy for the next seven years.
09:41There's, you know, probably not thinking, you know, maybe Lamar fits that
09:44mold, but it'd be a stopgap anyway.
09:48You're just kind of kicking the can down the road until you're going to drop the
09:50quarterback in my mind.
09:51So Geno could be here for another year in that scenario.
09:53But yeah, Glenn experienced success with Goff in Detroit, with Drew Brees in New
09:58Orleans.
09:58Like he's, he's been on this veteran train quarterback in his successful years he's
10:04had as a coach.
10:06You know, he was in Cleveland before that, which he probably was there for Johnny
10:09Menzel, I'm thinking, and that didn't go well.
10:13So I do think he's probably, probably has a fondness for veteran quarterbacks.
10:18Most, most coaches prefer veterans at all positions where, when they can play.
10:24Frankie, walk me through how, how is this the most Jets way for this rumor to
10:28play out for the Jets this year with the, the Tomlin and Lamar rumors that quote
10:32unquote are happening right now?
10:34I mean, listen, man, this is exactly what I would assume would happen.
10:38I mean, when you look at the Jets, you look at them just always not wanting to
10:43play the long game.
10:44They want to pressure cook everything.
10:45I always say we're, we're the best at wanting a microwave success, but our microwave
10:51doesn't work.
10:52And we don't have an oven that that's, that's in this, you know, you know,
10:56vicinity, so they don't really don't know how to put things together sometimes.
11:00And that's the one thing I think they have to realize guys is this is going to
11:05be a slow and steady process to what you just said.
11:08I agree with actually, I actually almost, you almost now almost convinced me and
11:12cause if they were to win eight games, I almost wouldn't want that because maybe
11:17they're not going to look at the rookie quarterback route, or they're going to
11:20maybe look at what cause mentioned, maybe bringing Gino back.
11:23So I think what they need to do is they need to identify first, the quarterback
11:29college football season starts in a few days.
11:32Look at every quarterback, identify that quarterback, and then start looking at some
11:36offensive minded pieces.
11:38You need, if you have a defensive minded head coach, you either need the quarterback to
11:43be at an above average level or the play call or to be at an above average level, preferably
11:48both, if you have a defensive minded guy, we're starting with a defensive minded head
11:53coach and no quarterback and a play caller and Frank Reich that I don't think is going
11:57to be here next year.
11:58And if he is, it's for one more year.
11:59So, you know, get your advantage with the quarterback is my point.
12:04And it may take some time.
12:06Everyone can kind of grow together.
12:08Yeah, I think overall for us, look, this is all talk about the future for what the Jets
12:13want to do.
12:13I think we should probably steer this conversation for another day and let's really focus on the
12:18fact that the Jets are a little over two weeks away from starting the 2026 season.
12:23And with that cause we have the roster crunch coming, there's going to be cuts that are going
12:27to go down and we want to break down this Jets roster with you on who you think could
12:31and could not make this roster.
12:33So let's start with the quarterback and running back positions here cause we know Gino and club
12:38Nick are the locks for this roster, but could the Jets potentially carry a third quarterback
12:43going into this season?
12:46No.
12:48Oh, wow.
12:49I don't think there's any scenario where they're carrying a third quarterback on the active
12:52roster.
12:53To be honest, I just, I don't know.
12:55I think maybe they keep Brady Cook on the practice squad.
13:00You know, I've heard good things about Brady Cook in the meeting room.
13:03He's a smart guy.
13:04They like having him around, but yeah, I don't see any scenario where they keep a third
13:09quarterback on the active roster.
13:11It's crazy where we started with this whole club Nick being the backup.
13:14You know, they wanted him to win the backup job from everything we've seen so far cause
13:18from the first two preseason games.
13:20Do you feel like he's earned that right to be the backup quarterback?
13:23Yeah, I do.
13:24I should, I guess I should say if this scenario that they decide he's not the backup and there's
13:28some veteran out there that they want, but that's a tough position to come in on August
13:3431st and be like, okay, learn the offense.
13:36Like, you know, you can do that at running back and you can do that at defensive end and
13:40you can learn it pretty quick.
13:42You can't really do that at quarterback.
13:43Obviously there's going to guys who bounced around the league and maybe they played this
13:47offense before.
13:48But to me, I think club Nick is still done enough that, that he's going to be the number
13:52two.
13:53Um, I think if there was a long-term injury to Gino, they'd have to look at the, what's
13:58on the market and maybe go out and get somebody else.
14:01But I do think like I've said for a while that I think club Nick, if you have to go
14:05through
14:05two games, if Gino has a sprained ankle or something, I think he's good enough to get
14:09you through that, that, that part of the schedule.
14:11Cause do you think they're confident in Cade club Nick to be able to start some games here?
14:19Like if Gino were to go down, do you think that Frank, Rick and Aaron Glenn?
14:22Yeah.
14:23What's their confidence?
14:24Cause they talk not a lot, right?
14:25Not a lot.
14:26Like one thing I learned early on covering like, you know, coaches would coach told me
14:31at one point, like there's players that you like at 200 snaps in a season.
14:37Yeah.
14:37There's players that you like at a thousand snaps in a season.
14:40Right.
14:40So I think if you, if, if they have to get through two games with Cade club Nick, they'll be
14:45okay.
14:45Like they can game plan around it and stuff.
14:49If you have to play 14 games with Cade club Nick, but yeah, it ain't going to work.
14:52He's not ready for that.
14:53And even that was the case in 2023.
14:56I like people, they destroyed the jets for having Zach Wilson as the backup.
15:00They would have been fine.
15:01If Zach Wilson only had to play three games, like there was games where Zach played well
15:04that year.
15:05The problem was that he had to play basically 17 games because Rogers went down with after
15:10four, after four plays.
15:11So I'm in that boat with club Nick.
15:13You're okay.
15:14If it's, if it's a couple of weeks, if it's going to be longer than that, then you're
15:17probably looking on the market what's out there.
15:20Yeah.
15:20Makes sense.
15:21I wonder if Andy Dalton was a guy that they would end up becoming available.
15:25I've heard he's been terrible in Philly, right?
15:27Like, yeah.
15:28Right.
15:28But I'm just talking about familiarity.
15:29Like he'd be able to come in and understand Frank Reich system right away as a play caller.
15:34It's, it's just something again, I don't know.
15:36Here.
15:37Yeah.
15:37I get it.
15:38And like, you go like, cause I feel like we have this conversation 8,000 times in 2023.
15:44How many games is Andy Dalton going to win yet?
15:46I know.
15:47Oh, I maybe one more than Cade Club Nick would over a seven game stretch.
15:52Like, yeah.
15:53Like Flacco had this freakish run with the Browns.
15:56Yeah.
15:56I was like, ah, look at that.
15:56But like, I feel like we've talked about this through the years.
16:00Like, it's like, oh, Jacoby Brissett is doing awesome for Arizona.
16:03Well, they won one game with him at quarterback.
16:06Like, yeah.
16:07Like, he throws touchdown passes and it looks better.
16:10But like, the bottom line is in this league, if you're, most of the time, if you lose your
16:15starting quarterback, you're screwed.
16:18You know, there's some exceptions, but most of the time, that's not a good scenario for you.
16:22Yeah.
16:23Let's talk about the running back spot, cause.
16:26Uh, yeah, we know Brees obviously dealing with the groin injury.
16:29All indications are he should be ready for week one.
16:31We'll see, uh, as that plays out the next couple of weeks.
16:34But, uh, Braylon Allen, Isaiah Davis, we feel like those are guys they're going to keep.
16:39Will they keep the fullback Andrew Beck though onto this roster for 2026?
16:44Yeah.
16:44He's an interesting one guys.
16:46And I, to me, he's, he's not really about the running back room.
16:48He's about the tight end room.
16:50Right.
16:50Yeah.
16:50So I don't know if you want to flip ahead here, Ryan.
16:52Yeah.
16:53Sure.
16:53But like, look, we know that they, they, they, they've got the two guys they just drafted
16:57with Kenya Sadiq and Mason Taylor, Jeremy Rutgers, good, good third end, tight end, good
17:03blocker.
17:03And they gave him a contract.
17:04And then Jelani Woods has had his, Jelani Woods has had a really good training camp.
17:07Yeah.
17:08Frank Reich likes him.
17:09Frank Reich drafted him in Indianapolis.
17:11So that that's a good thing for him.
17:12And I don't see a scenario right now where Jelani Woods isn't on this team because he's been,
17:17yeah, he's, he's been a featured part of the offense all summer long.
17:22And, uh, and you saw that he scored the touchdown against Pittsburgh in the first series.
17:27So to me now you're going, okay, if we have four tight ends, do we need a fullback or can
17:33Ruckert line up at fullback and Jelani Woods line up at fullback?
17:35I think that's one of the ones Ryan, where you come down to when you're looking at the
17:39numbers and you're like, do I have a spot for Beck?
17:42If there's a, if there's a spot, we'll keep them.
17:45But if he might be the, like the guy, the 54th player, right.
17:49And like, he's the guy that kind of, they decide, Hey, we probably need a little extra
17:52help at linebacker.
17:53We need a little extra help at cornerback.
17:56We can't afford to keep back.
17:58Uh, that that's interesting also with the Jelani Woods of it all, because I, I think he has
18:03kind of earned his way onto this roster.
18:05Like you said, like he's had a really, really good camp, uh, and he's a big body and, and
18:10he'd be such a nice welcome to that red zone offense that you want to install.
18:15And, and he's such a big threat.
18:17I feel like in that, in that part of the field that I don't know if Andrew Breck, he's a
18:21fullback,
18:22obviously.
18:22Like, I just don't know if Beck can provide the same value that you need to score points
18:26in this league as Jelani Woods would.
18:28And I think Woods is actually a solid blocker too.
18:30Like he can, he can do the job as a blocker.
18:33Um, it's interesting though, like if they don't go with Beck and they stick with a four
18:38tight ends, which Jelani Woods, uh, let's also talk about the wide receiver room cause
18:43because, uh, Omar Cooper, we know he's going to be, he battles out, uh, Isaiah Williams
18:48for that wide receiver three spot.
18:50Uh, he's come on recently in that starting offense.
18:53We're seeing him get more reps.
18:54Uh, so that's interesting.
18:55I want to hear your thoughts on that, but then also at the same time, what do they do?
18:59Do they keep Tim Patrick as the veteran?
19:01Do they go with a younger name to keep on the roster?
19:04Like how they keep in five wide receivers?
19:05What do you see this wide receiver room looking like?
19:09Yeah, that's an interesting one, right?
19:10That's an interesting decision they have.
19:12Um, I do think the Cooper Williams thing is probably depending on the formation that they
19:16come out in, like either one of them could be starting depending on what their, what their
19:20formation they're in.
19:21Uh, Cooper started in Pittsburgh last week.
19:24So that was a positive sign.
19:25And he, um, he did have a touchdown catch from Gino, uh, Monday or Tuesday's practice
19:31for which day that was.
19:32So yeah, the guy, I think Aaron Smith is safe because Aaron Smith is a good special teamer.
19:40Aaron Smith's a good gunner for them.
19:42Aaron Smith also has a skill that no one else in that receiving room has.
19:46And that's speed of like blazing, blazing speed.
19:49So if you're looking for a burner down the field, he's your guy.
19:53So I think Aaron Smith is safe.
19:55Uh, to me, the Tim Patrick question is, uh, Malik McClain has had a very good training
20:00camp.
20:00And I also think he could be more of a special teams guy.
20:02Tim Patrick's probably not playing a lot of teams at this point.
20:06You know, I tend to give the veterans the benefit of the doubt that that, especially the
20:10beginning of the season, I feel like coaches stick with veterans.
20:13So I'll lean Patrick, but that could be one of the surprise cuts, Ryan, to see him.
20:19And, um, I think they probably try to stash McClain on their, their practice squad.
20:23The thing with Tim Patrick is, and when I went to camp, went one day, but just looking at
20:28him, he doesn't move well anymore, man.
20:32Those injuries really caught up to the guy.
20:34I think when you bring in a veteran like that, you want to hope that they can get back
20:37to what they were, but he's had a bunch of injuries throughout his career.
20:40So when you're six, five and you have all those injuries, it's tough to move.
20:45And he just, to me, I was looking at him specifically when we had gone to camp, Ryan
20:50Kaz, and he just looked slow.
20:52He, he, he doesn't look big enough or excuse me.
20:54He doesn't look fast enough with his size.
20:56He's big enough.
20:57He's not fast enough to be able to get in and out of his breaks consistently.
21:01So, uh, before we move on to the trenches cause, I do want to ask you about Kenyon
21:07Sadiq, uh, because I heard Frank rake's comments about, we do have to now limit him at the start
21:12of the season and what we want to use them offensive offensively wise, because he has
21:15missed all of training camp, uh, as well as D'Angelo ponds.
21:19So it's a, it's a two part question here cause first is do we see Sadiq and ponds week one?
21:25And second part of the question is how concerning is it?
21:30The fact that your two of your four top draft picks have missed all of training camp in their
21:36rookie year and it, how much it limits them at the start of the year.
21:40Do you think they'll be healthy enough to play, right?
21:44I've been watching them on the side field that they're both working.
21:46They're both moving, you know, fairly well.
21:50Uh, how much we see them is the question to me.
21:54Brownlee's had a good training camp.
21:55I think Brownlee's the nickel right now.
21:57I think ponds is going to have to work his way in there.
22:00Uh, say Mason Taylor has had a tremendous training camp.
22:03I thought Mason Taylor has been outstanding.
22:05So same thing.
22:06I think Sadiq is, I think is going to be limited.
22:09And the Frank rake was honest the other day about that, which I appreciated.
22:13Uh, just use your brain.
22:14Like the, the, the plan with these, these two guys was that they were going to be Swiss army
22:20knife, chess pieces.
22:21You're going to move them all over the field.
22:23This guy can play inside, can play outside, can do this, you know, Sadiq, they can, they
22:27can line up running back.
22:28They can, you can't do that.
22:30If the guy never practices, you can't do that stuff.
22:33Like you can't learn that in a classroom.
22:34So to me, they're kind of going to come in and they're going to have the basics, you
22:39know, Sadiq, Sadiq will probably be part of the, like, you know, basic package.
22:43And, you know, Pons can, Pons are going to play inside and outside.
22:47You're not going to be able to do that.
22:48So they're going to have to focus, limit the focus with those guys at the beginning.
22:51And maybe, you know, after four or five weeks, they can work that stuff in practice and get
22:55them up to speed of what they hoped.
22:58So I think you'll see them, Ryan.
22:59I just don't think you're going to see them a lot early on in the season.
23:02I'd be surprised if they had a big, like, I don't know how they could have big roles
23:06against Tennessee.
23:06They just don't even have enough time right now to ramp up their bodies and get in football
23:10shape.
23:11Frankie, what do you think?
23:11That's frustrating that we can't see those guys as much as you would like the first couple
23:15of weeks.
23:16This is a tough blow for these guys to start their rookie seasons.
23:19Yeah, it is, man.
23:20Of course it is.
23:20I mean, these are, these are highly touted rookies that have come in.
23:25Sadiq was a 16th overall pick as a tight end.
23:27And to what Kaz is saying is spot on because the type of plays you need to construct for Kenyon
23:33Sadiq to get open, to get yak, those aren't just traditional tight end kind of things.
23:39It's not like you could just, you know, fill in him for, for Mason Taylor and have him running
23:45the same sort of routes.
23:46He doesn't do that.
23:47He's, he's a more unique tight end.
23:48So it's, it's going to be difficult.
23:51Unfortunately, I don't know what we're going to see from Sadiq.
23:55I, I, I've told some fans that don't get too excited if he shows up in pregame week
24:01one and, and you're, you're going to get excited that he's going to play all that much.
24:05I mean, I could see maybe he plays 10% of snaps and that's about it.
24:08Yeah.
24:08Ponds is the one.
24:10Yeah.
24:11Yeah.
24:11I thought you could take Mason Taylor off the field right now.
24:13Yeah.
24:13I mean, why would you?
24:14I know.
24:15Yeah.
24:16You, I, I wouldn't, I, I wouldn't place it.
24:18Honestly.
24:19I think his blocking still needs some work.
24:21Yeah.
24:21Man, he's been getting open left and right.
24:23Like he's just, he's just looked really good.
24:25And like, I mean, I know you guys probably saw the highlight that the Jets put out there,
24:29the boss catch that he had over, he was Brandon Stevens was like, wow.
24:34You know, that was, that was when we were like, holy cow, what a catch.
24:38So, uh, it seems like he has some chemistry with Gino too.
24:42Like I, I laugh.
24:43I think Gino's going to have chemistry with all the guys from South Florida.
24:49Right.
24:49There's a South Florida football, like fraternity and Gino and Gino is like, for those guys,
24:57Gino's a legend.
24:58Yeah.
24:58Right.
24:58Cause he, he, he was a star when, you know, West Virginia, when some of these guys were
25:04eight, nine, 10 years old, you know, so he's the guy.
25:07So I just don't know how you get Mason Taylor off the field right now.
25:10The thing with Mason Taylor too, is you, you notice, and, and I've noticed this some, some
25:15guys you could just tell, just love football and practice and, and study hard.
25:20Like Mason Taylor, you can just see the guy and see how he, you know, conducts himself
25:24and how he talks about the game comes from a family of all football players.
25:27And he, he, his, what his Godfather is what, uh, Zach Thomas.
25:31Isn't that something like, yeah.
25:33So it's like everyone around him.
25:35It's like, yeah, his, his uncle.
25:37Yeah.
25:37Yeah.
25:37Sorry.
25:38Um, yeah, it's, it's, it's crazy how he, he's just, he's gotten better every time you see
25:44him.
25:44He just gets a little bit better, a little bit better.
25:46And cause is right.
25:47He's every time I look on, yeah.
25:49And he's making a play.
25:50I think the most important attribute that I've seen him develop, uh, what, what's standing
25:55out early on is he can find space downfield and it doesn't matter how close the defender
25:59is if they're playing in zone or man, he finds that space and makes himself able to separate
26:05from that defender a little bit in order to make an easier point of target and catch from
26:09the, from the quarterback.
26:10So, uh, very smart football.
26:12That's what I'm saying.
26:13Like he knows where to find those edges in terms of finding the open space.
26:17It's really important for him to have that attribute because this jets offense needs to
26:21attack the middle of the field.
26:22They have not done enough of that.
26:23In my opinion, over the last couple of years, they haven't done really anything well as an
26:26offense, but if they can attack and expose the middle of the field, Mason Taylor, it
26:30opens up a lot of things for them, especially with Brees in the run game.
26:33And obviously for the, uh, the perimeter with Garrett and I, and I Mitchell, uh, cause let's
26:37talk some trenches here.
26:38Well, look, the offensive line is set.
26:39We know who the starters are there.
26:41Uh, but on the fringes itself, who do you see making this roster here for the offensive
26:46line and the depth that they need?
26:48Yeah, this is, this is an area where I do think Mugi could be working the waiver wire
26:54a little bit.
26:55It doesn't look good guys.
26:57When the second team offensive line is in now, somebody can make the point.
27:02You're not going to play all five of them at the same time.
27:04You're going to be screwed if you're doing that.
27:05So are you okay with one of them playing, but it hasn't looked good.
27:09You know, Xavier Newman has been the backup center.
27:12His snaps, I feel like have been shaky all summer.
27:14Uh, I'd be worried about him.
27:17Uh, I'd be worried about the guard position.
27:20Cole Aveo has been the first one in when they've been injuries to tackles.
27:24You have Max Mitchell and you have Chooks, uh, over there.
27:27Um, but yeah, that will not surprise me if, if Monday at noon, we hear the Jets picked up
27:34an offensive lineman from some other camp.
27:37Here's the problem.
27:38If you're the Jets, there's 31 other teams that don't have depth on the offensive line.
27:43So are guys getting cut by another team?
27:46Like, you know, like that's, that's not happening.
27:49Like I talked to somebody from another team who was picking my brain about the Jets roster.
27:53And they're like, do you think like, do they have any depth on the offensive line that we
27:57could trade for?
27:57And I started laughing.
27:59Who has depth on the offensive line?
28:01Like, I feel like maybe the Eagles do, or the lions do maybe, I don't know.
28:06But even then, like, I just feel like that's a position where there's not many human beings
28:10that can play it.
28:11And so it's very hard.
28:13So if you're picking guys up from another roster, like it's worth the guy rolling the
28:17dice, I guess, but it's probably not going to work out much better than what you have
28:20anywhere.
28:21And in terms of the waiver spot, the Jets are number two, I believe behind the Raiders.
28:25So they would have the second best position in order to claim an offensive lineman.
28:29If one were to shake free, I mean, it's improving on the margins, but, uh, Oh, nice
28:33Cooper, the guard that they drafted, uh, this past year in the draft, I watched some of
28:37his film.
28:38He was better in the first game.
28:40Way better against the Steelers though.
28:43Yeah.
28:44It was bad.
28:45It was bad.
28:46He was playing some, he was playing some better players against us.
28:48Yeah, he was.
28:49He came in against the bucks.
28:50It was the second half.
28:51And remember the bucks didn't start any of their starters.
28:54So he was playing third teamers against Stanford Bay.
28:56Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh left their starters, you know, minus TJ Y and Cam Hayward, but most
29:01of their starters were in there.
29:02The first series, the backups came in.
29:04So that's like legit NFL talent.
29:07And yeah.
29:07I mean, look, he's a late round pick guys.
29:09Yeah, it's going to take him time.
29:10He needs to, he needs a red shirt here to watch him warm.
29:14No doubt.
29:15Uh, cause let's talk about the other side of the ball and the defensive line part.
29:18Uh, look, we know to Vondra sweat and now he's healthy.
29:21He's working his way, ready to rock week one, but talk me through how this defensive line
29:26ends up shaping out and who's going to make the roster.
29:30Yeah.
29:31I mean, I think Daryl Jackson has had himself a really good training camp.
29:34I don't think I was ever questioned whether he was going to make the roster.
29:36He's a draft pick, but I thought he'd be an inactive guy for most of the season.
29:41Now I think he's part of the rotation, you know, on Yamada, I'd be a little concerned
29:47there.
29:47I don't think he's looked particularly good.
29:50Um, so he's obviously going to be on the roster.
29:53Harrison Phillips.
29:54You have him, you have sweat.
29:56Uh, who am I forgetting?
29:58Anyone?
29:59Would Mozzie Smith and I guess.
30:02I don't think Mozzie Smith will make the team.
30:03Yeah.
30:05Uh, Juwan Briggs.
30:07Yeah.
30:07He'll make Briggs.
30:08We forgot Briggs.
30:09Yeah.
30:09Briggs part of the rotation.
30:10So yeah.
30:10So they have a nice rotation there.
30:12Um, cause touch on on Yamada a little bit.
30:15Sorry.
30:15Well, what's go, what do you think's going on with him?
30:17Yeah.
30:17I just, I don't know.
30:19He just hasn't, he hasn't popped at all.
30:22Like it hasn't been, you know, you watch his training camp practices and it's like,
30:26Oh wow.
30:26Look at, you know, who's this, who's number 93.
30:29And like, it hasn't happened.
30:31Uh, and I just feel like, and then the games, I thought he was pushed around a little bit
30:36in Pittsburgh last week.
30:38Um, so I don't know.
30:39I just, he had the Jets lowest PFF.
30:42He had the Jets lowest, uh, PFF score against Pittsburgh.
30:45By far the worst player on PFF wise.
30:49I'm just throwing that out there.
30:50Yeah.
30:50I just, he just hasn't jumped to me and maybe the guy like that doesn't jump because he's
30:55a run stuffer, but I don't know.
30:57Other guys have Jackson has really stood out all season all summer.
31:01I mean, and, um, you know, Phillips has made a lot of plays, I think has made a lot of
31:08plays in the backfield, you know, sweat is working his way back, but I think you have
31:13high expectations for him.
31:14So I don't know.
31:16I just, I'd keep an eye on Yamada.
31:18Uh, he just doesn't jump to me.
31:20Yeah.
31:20That would be a shock if they, uh, if, if they were, uh, but you know, they did give him
31:24they're not going to cut him, they paid him.
31:26Yeah.
31:26But I just, I'm, you know, would shock me if his playing time, his playing time could go
31:32like this as the season goes on.
31:34I can see him being one of those kinds of guys.
31:36They go, maybe we, maybe we're better off playing Jackson and seeing what we got there.
31:41Yeah, I agree.
31:43Uh, let's talk about the edge.
31:44Uh, we know they, uh, brought in Anambari.
31:46They brought in Joseph Asai.
31:48They drafted David Bailey.
31:49Will McDonald was back, obviously.
31:51Uh, but there's some other guys there with Braden McGregor, Tyler Barron, uh, Nate Lynn,
31:57who looked pretty, pretty solid against the Steelers.
32:00Uh, talk, talk me through the edge.
32:02How does this work out?
32:03Yeah.
32:04I don't think there's any surprises there, Ron.
32:06I think it's the guys you expect Barron's still hurt.
32:08Like remember he tore his ACL late in the season.
32:10So I think he'll start the year on IR.
32:12Um, you know, yeah, Nate Lynn was really impressive.
32:17Not just the sacks.
32:18He just, he was winning a lot of his matchups up front.
32:21He was facing Broderick Jones, you know, first round pick at one point.
32:25I just think it's probably too late for him to get a roster spot.
32:28And that's, it's a tough room right there, right?
32:30Like you got two guys who were first round picks and two guys who were big free agent
32:35signings.
32:35I think those are your four edge rushers.
32:36So I think Nate Lynn could stick on the practice squad though.
32:40Uh, and then what about Braden McGregor?
32:42Does he make it or do you think he's going to be cut?
32:44I don't think he makes it, Ryan.
32:46He's actually come on a little bit at the end of camp here.
32:49I've seen, I've noticed him a little bit more.
32:51He's made some plays.
32:52Uh, that's another one.
32:54Sort of like what I said with Andrew Beck.
32:55I think that comes down to the math.
32:57It's like, okay, what do we have at this position?
33:00In this position, can we afford to keep a fifth edge rusher?
33:03Or do we have to, are we better served with a, with another linebacker?
33:08Like, again, these, a lot of these decisions are special teams related.
33:12Is Braden McGregor going to play special teams?
33:14You're right.
33:15Not usually an edge rusher type of thing.
33:17Like, uh, uh, you know, you're not usually.
33:20So I think he probably is caught in the numbers there.
33:24You know what happens too, with some of these players, they need a lot of reps to just mature
33:29and to get into their own Braden McGregor with his defensive line.
33:33How many reps is he going to get?
33:35Even when we went to camp, I was noticing him.
33:37He got a few one-on-ones, got a few reps in team period.
33:40That's it.
33:41You're not going to get better really getting two reps in team period.
33:44You got to, you know, there's more to go around.
33:47So I think if Braden McGregor were to go to a team and get a ton of reps or on
33:52a practice
33:52squad somewhere and play a lot, he might need another year or two of reps strictly.
33:57You know, I do.
33:58I would like to see Nate Lynn make the practice squad.
34:00If they can get him on a hundred percent.
34:01Yeah.
34:01Just like I said, it's been impressive what he's done so far.
34:04Uh, that last week for Steelers was pretty awesome to watch.
34:06Yeah.
34:07Uh, let's move to the linebacker spot cause to Mario Davis, Jamie and Sherwood, Maui,
34:11Noah McCrary ball, uh, any shock there.
34:15Uh, those are the four guys.
34:17Uh, I think Michael Walker has a shot.
34:20He, he got hurt.
34:22So he hasn't practiced, uh, this week.
34:25Um, he was down for the Pittsburgh game too.
34:27That's why I know just, just to clear one thing too, right.
34:29I know this was a social media talking point.
34:31I'm not sure if it was ever cleared up after the game, but like people were like, oh my
34:35God, Sherwood is playing deep into the, like past us.
34:39But now we know it couldn't play.
34:41We didn't know that at the time.
34:43Now we know it had hurt his hamstring and didn't play.
34:45And Michael Walker was down.
34:47So they just didn't have bodies to play.
34:49So I think that's why Sherwood was playing.
34:50I don't think there's, I even got a text from someone from another team.
34:53Are they going to trade Sherwood?
34:54No, they can't trade Sherwood.
34:56Like they don't have the depth behind them.
34:58So I think, I don't know what the extent of Michael Walker's injury, but I think he's
35:01a, he's a really good teams guy.
35:03I think he's another, I think he's in that group with Maui Noah McCrary ball where he
35:07can come in and play a little bit if you need him.
35:10So I would put him as the fifth linebacker, Ryan, unless his injury is more significant.
35:14I think I've seen him, he's been on the, he's been on the side field doing stuff.
35:19So that tells me he's, he's probably going to be okay for the season.
35:22It'd be funny if Kaz responded.
35:23Cause Kaz likes to make jokes, which I like about him.
35:26Imagine he says, yeah, absolutely.
35:27They're like joking, like being sarcastic, but they wrote an article about the Jets.
35:32It would blow up.
35:32I think Kaz.
35:34This was a guy, this was someone from a team, Frankie.
35:37Wow.
35:38This was someone from a team.
35:39They're asking me if they're going to trade Sherwood.
35:42So yeah, I should have told them, yeah, give up three first round picks.
35:45It's yours.
35:46You broker, you broker a trade.
35:49Kaz, is there any chance that the Jets, again, looking at the waiver market, would they
35:54look to potentially upgrade the depth here or are they, you think they're okay with, this
35:58is who they got for a linebacker spot.
36:01There's another one, Ryan.
36:02I don't know what you find that's better than what you got.
36:04Right.
36:05Like I, I think there'd be some concerns if you had to play one of these guys a lot, but
36:13you're kind of counting on DeMario has missed, I think one game in his entire career.
36:16So you're kind of counting on him being an Ironman and Sherwood has been other than me.
36:20He got injured as a rookie, but he's been pretty good and pretty healthy.
36:23So, you know, I think they'd go with Maui Noah and McCrary Ball played a little bit.
36:30So I think, I don't think they'll be looking for that, Ryan.
36:32I just don't, I don't know you get enough grade there.
36:36So maybe, but maybe like, you know, maybe there's a Quincy Williams out there to be found.
36:41Like they found once on the waiver wire.
36:44But to me, I think you're probably okay with what you've got right now.
36:47By the way, I don't know what you guys are talking about.
36:49Mike Clay just came out with a ranking.
36:51The Jets have the number one off-ball linebacking unit in football, right?
36:56Come on.
36:56I like Mike Clay a lot.
36:58That's saying something though.
36:59The Jets have the number one.
37:00I was shocked at that.
37:02I was shocked too.
37:03I will say this though, guys, go around the league and look at linebacking.
37:08Of course, you don't have DeMario and Sherwood.
37:10I mean, you did.
37:11Yeah.
37:11San Francisco, like San Francisco has a few.
37:13San Francisco has a few.
37:14Yeah.
37:14But like, I think they're talking about.
37:16The Houston, I feel like Houston.
37:18Houston does.
37:19The one.
37:19Yes.
37:20Yeah.
37:20Definitely.
37:21Yeah.
37:22Monster Sherwood season, common guys.
37:25Sherwood had over 150 tackles last year.
37:27Just throwing that out there.
37:28Last year was not a good year for Sherwood.
37:30I'm just saying.
37:30Tackling wasn't the issue though, Frank.
37:32The coverage was the issue.
37:33Pass coverage.
37:33And DeMario's not good at that either.
37:35Or any play action bootlegs were issues.
37:37I was, I was, if I was the offensive coordinator, I knew to call a play action pass against that
37:41defense by the end of the season.
37:43Trust me.
37:43The Steelers were doing that on last week as well.
37:46I was watching both those guys that the communication is all going through DeMario Davis.
37:51The Jets defense is going to struggle if he ever, he's an Ironman.
37:54I'm not rooting for an injury.
37:55I want to see him have a great year for the Jets.
37:57They paid him a lot of money to be the captain of that defense.
38:00But they need him.
38:02Like he is clearing, clear cut the, the vocal leader of that interior of that defense.
38:07But then if we go to the secondary, the other vocal leaders, Minka Fitzpatrick, who they
38:10brought in this off season, obviously he's a lock for the roster.
38:14But Kaz, talk me through the secondary as a whole with the safety position.
38:18Who's going to be starting?
38:20We know there's a Dane Belton versus Andre Sisco argument going on right now.
38:24And then at the corner spot, we know Brandon Stevens is one of the starters.
38:28Pons, we're expecting to come back from injury, but there's Nashaun Wright, Asri Thomas, Jarvis
38:34Brownlee.
38:34He talked about Qantas Stiggers.
38:36What do they do with him?
38:37Yeah.
38:37Frankie has a man crush on Jordan Clark.
38:40I know that.
38:41And of course, the training camp hero, Mo Bamba.
38:45Like there's, there's some spots here to, to figure out how does this work out for the
38:49secondary?
38:51First, Frankie, I want to clip that Ryan was the one who talked about the DeMario injury.
38:55He's the one who brought that up.
38:56So if that happens, Frankie's the one we're going to, Ryan's going to be the one in trouble,
39:01not you or I.
39:03Finally.
39:03Okay.
39:03So the safety position, I think Bell, I think Bell was in the lead, but Cisco has had a,
39:09you know, he had the interception in Pittsburgh and interception in practice a few days before
39:14that he's come on a little bit, made some plays, but Belton has been consistently the
39:18better player.
39:19If you go through camp, he's just, he's been around the ball a lot.
39:23The two areas of concern I think you'd have if Belton's your starter is one, he's your special
39:29teams.
39:30He's going to be your special teams ace.
39:32That's what you signed for.
39:33Can you now play 60 to 70 plays of defense and also do all of your special teams?
39:39Do you worry about that?
39:40Most of those guys aren't starters that are our core special teams players.
39:45The other point, and I'll give Robbie Sabo credit for this.
39:48He pointed this out is that, you know, both Minka and Belton are better closer to the line
39:53of scrimmage where Cisco is more of a center fielder.
39:55So is it a better fit to have Cisco in there with Minka where he's going to play?
40:00He's going to be the deep safety.
40:02Maybe that's not Belton's strength, but to me, Belton's in the lead right now, but I'm
40:06curious to see which way that goes.
40:08Because cornerback, yeah, I think we know the top guys who are likely going to make
40:14it.
40:14Jordan Clark is an interesting one, Frankie.
40:16He is a hell of a football player.
40:18He is.
40:19Like, he is just a guy who is a football player.
40:22The problem for Jordan Clark is, like, is he a redundant player on the Jets roster?
40:27Because they have Jarvis Brownlee, who's had a very good training camp.
40:30Like, they have Pons, who they drafted.
40:33So, like, they have two nickels already.
40:37I'm curious, can Jordan Clark play safety?
40:40That's the question.
40:41Because if he can play safety, maybe he's then, you know, in the mix there as a third
40:48or fourth safety.
40:49Um, I don't know.
40:51So, Malachi Moore really hasn't done much while camp.
40:55I think he's kind of been a disappointment.
40:57What's going on with him, Kaz?
40:59Yeah, what's, I mean, he had 100 tackles last year.
41:01He said he threw a pick, wasn't he?
41:03No.
41:04No, he was a fifth round pick, I think.
41:06Fifth, right?
41:07Yeah.
41:08Yeah, it was a fifth round pick.
41:09Okay.
41:10But, I mean, yeah, I mean, it's weird.
41:13You have 100 tackles as a rookie.
41:14Yeah.
41:15He shouldn't have been playing last year.
41:16Fourth round pick.
41:17Fourth round pick.
41:18Yeah, that's true.
41:18He probably shouldn't have been playing last year.
41:21And, yeah, he just, it hasn't taken that step forward, which happens, you know?
41:25Fourth round picks are kind of rolls of the dice.
41:27Like, some of them hit, but most of them don't.
41:31So, yeah, Jordan Clark, to me, the question is, like, his versatility, but he plays teams.
41:35And, I don't know, like, to me, he just screams football player.
41:39And, I like those guys.
41:42Yeah.
41:42Yeah, Bamba has not played since the Bucs game.
41:46He's been hurt.
41:47He has a gigantic brace on his leg.
41:50So, I don't think you're going to see him anytime soon.
41:53So, to me, he's probably, you know, he's going to be helping out.
41:56He's a practice squad guy.
41:58But, yeah.
42:00You know, and then, yeah, the other ones, I think, are all obvious to make the team.
42:03The thing with Jordan Clark, I think it'd be a good message to the team.
42:09From Aaron Glenn's perspective to say, we're about competition.
42:13We're about merit.
42:15Jordan Clark led the team in tackles.
42:20He's led the team in tackles in preseason.
42:22He has the number one grade on P.
42:25You guys don't know how to talk about PFF.
42:26He has the number one defensive grade on PFF.
42:29Reward the kid.
42:30Kid came from Notre Dame.
42:31Remember, highly touted recruit.
42:34Didn't really get his feet too wet in Notre Dame.
42:36Didn't do all that much, but played a bit.
42:38And he was Arizona State first, Frankie, right?
42:40That's right.
42:41And he went to Notre Dame.
42:41Yeah, yeah, yeah.
42:42Sorry.
42:43Yeah.
42:43Arizona State, then Notre Dame.
42:44And then he played last year.
42:47Remember, Jordan Clark played with the team.
42:49He played in six games last year.
42:52So, he had a game against New Orleans.
42:54He had five tackles.
42:55I mean, it's not like he's some guy that's not used to playing.
42:58He's played in.
42:58So, he has some game experience.
43:00He's been playing very well in preseason.
43:03I just think it's a good message, but I hear you if he's a nickel corner and you have Pons
43:09coming back with the kid we got from Tennessee.
43:13Yeah, with Brownlee, with Jarvis Brownlee.
43:15Where's he going to play?
43:16We got three nickel corners on your team?
43:17I mean, you can't.
43:18So, I agree with Kaz that I would look at or he needs to look at maybe transitioning to
43:24safety.
43:25But, yeah.
43:25Here's one for you.
43:26What if they decide Belton is the starting safety?
43:30Do they keep Cisco?
43:32I mean, that's a good question.
43:34I don't know, Kaz.
43:36I think you have to, but.
43:38He's been playing special teams a little bit, which I didn't think he was going to play
43:43special teams.
43:43Like, he's a veteran guy, but he's been on teams a little bit, which tells me they're
43:47trying to find roles for him.
43:51I also think Aaron Gleick could use three safeties a lot this season.
43:56I do think that there could be a lot of three safety looks because Minka is sort of, he
44:00can be the nickel corner, right?
44:02Like, you can play a big nickel with Minka and then have Belton and Cisco in there.
44:05But I think it's a question going into the weekend.
44:07I think it's something that the Jets have to debate is whether to keep a guy like Cisco
44:12or do you keep a guy like Jordan Clark instead?
44:15And, again, can you cross-train him to play a little safety if you need him there?
44:20Kaz, what's your sense tomorrow night?
44:22Jets playing their starters or are they going to be just playing the backups tomorrow night?
44:26Mike, this is a total guess.
44:29I don't think they'll play the starters, but, like, we haven't.
44:31Aaron Lenn talked to us Monday and then we haven't seen him Tuesday the quarters.
44:36We didn't have access Wednesday or Thursday, so I don't really know.
44:40But I just, my feeling now is this third preseason game has kind of become the fourth,
44:46the old fourth preseason game where it's about guys who are trying to make the roster.
44:49And I also think the first offense last week, I think Glenn probably watched them go down
44:54the field and said, all right, I've seen enough.
44:56That's good.
44:57Like, we can shut it down.
44:58But, yeah, so to me, I expect all backups.
45:02Maybe a few exceptions, Ryan, which will tell us.
45:05Like, is Cisco out there playing tomorrow night if no one else is?
45:08Like, you can get some answers in that last preseason game of where guys stand in the
45:12roster cut down sweepstakes.
45:16As we head into the season, Kaz, we just went through the whole roster about who we think
45:20can make it, who we think can be potential cuts.
45:23Give me your stock up on who your stock rose this training camp and give me who in training
45:30camp their stock is down just on what you've seen through preseason and training camp for
45:34the Jets.
45:36Yeah, well, Mason Taylor, we talked about, he's a big stock up guy for me.
45:43And, like, Ryan, you can call up.
45:44I wrote this in my newsletter this week.
45:46I'm trying to remember all the guys I had in there right now because I wrote that about
45:51a week almost a week ago at this point.
45:53So you had on your stock up Dane Belton, who we just talked about.
45:57Yeah, which I didn't think Belton was going to be the starter coming in.
46:00I thought Cisco was probably going to be the guy in Belton.
46:04And, you know, Cisco was the starter at the beginning of training camp and Belton has taken
46:07over as the starter now at terms of we saw in Pittsburgh last week.
46:11So, yeah, I think Belton has definitely driven his stock up.
46:15And who else I have?
46:16You wrote Mason Taylor.
46:17And then Adonai Mitchell is another guy who you had stock up on.
46:21Yeah.
46:21Yeah.
46:22Which Mitchell, I think that's not a huge surprise.
46:24We all kind of talked about he could be the guy this year, but he's definitely shown a lot
46:28of chemistry with Gino and he's caught almost everything that's thrown his way.
46:34He's not dropping passes.
46:34He's been open a lot in practice.
46:37So, yeah, I think all things have been positive from Adonai Mitchell so far.
46:42Frankie, anyone else that you're up on stock wise from the judge training camp?
46:45Well, just to touch on Adonai Mitchell for a quick second.
46:48I mean, that kid has every attribute you'd want out of a wide receiver in the NFL.
46:55Especially for a number two.
46:56Definitely, Rye.
46:57I mean, there is no doubt about it.
46:59So, I mean, when you look at, you know, talent at the wide receiver position, he crosses off
47:05really every box that you'd be looking for.
47:08Stock up.
47:08Listen, I think AZ Thomas has had some stock up.
47:12Yeah.
47:12He hasn't been much of a liability.
47:14And that's another thing.
47:15Yeah.
47:15With corners specifically, I sometimes relate it to an offensive lineman.
47:20If you're not talking about them, they're doing a good job, right?
47:23So, yeah.
47:25He also benefited, frankly, from Nashawn Wright getting hurt.
47:28Absolutely, yes.
47:30That competition, that was a competition in the spring where I would have said Wright was
47:33probably ahead.
47:34Now, people have told me AZ was recovering from his injury in the spring, so he was limited.
47:39But I felt like Wright was ahead in the spring from what I saw.
47:42And now, you know, Wright hasn't been out there in weeks.
47:46It's definitely, he just returned this week to practice.
47:49So, I think it's definitely AZ's job now.
47:51He's going to get a lot of looks, I guess, tomorrow night, right?
47:55Nashawn Wright, is he ready to play?
47:56I think that's another answer we'll get.
47:57Like, I don't know.
47:58Like, if they think he's the starter, why?
48:00I think they put him in the bubble wrap.
48:03Yeah.
48:03Yeah.
48:05It's also part of this where we have to be critical, but also, at the same time, the
48:11season has to play out.
48:12And these guys have an opportunity to prove themselves.
48:15But, Kaz, you wrote about a couple players that were down in terms of training camp stock
48:20down.
48:20First one being Will McDonald.
48:22Talk to me on what you've seen from this training camp.
48:25Yeah.
48:25This, to me, isn't me saying Will hasn't had a good training camp.
48:28It's me reading the tea leaves.
48:30Like, you guys saw the Pittsburgh game, right?
48:33Yeah.
48:34Yeah.
48:34Was he out?
48:35He didn't play.
48:36I think he played until the third series.
48:38I think he got some run a little bit with the starters, but that was about it.
48:41And then he stayed in the game for a while after that with the backups.
48:47And that sort of corresponds to what we've seen all summer, other than when there was
48:51injuries.
48:52So, I think Will's battle, he has an uphill climb right now.
48:56Obviously, David Bailey is the bell of the ball at this point, and he's going to be out
49:01there a lot.
49:02But, Osai has looked very good since he's come back.
49:05I think he's going to get a lot of reps.
49:08And then, Bari's playing a lot.
49:09So, it feels like, to me, Will is sort of the fourth guy in that group right now.
49:14And, you know, he's a good pass rusher.
49:17So, they're going to find ways to get him on the field.
49:20But, I don't think you'll see a lot of them.
49:23I don't think he's going to be out there on first and second down too much.
49:26Cos, would it behoove the Jets to look at maybe moving Will McDonald?
49:31I don't think they will, Frankie, because they're going to fear depth, right?
49:35Like, he's one injury away from playing a lot more.
49:40So, I don't think he'll do that.
49:42Now, if things are going south and the trade deadline's approaching, Will's name is going
49:48to be thrown around a lot.
49:49Totally.
49:49Because teams called about him last year, and they said no about him.
49:52They wouldn't trade him last year.
49:55So, I would expect him to be a popular topic around the trade deadline.
50:00He's got talent.
50:02Just has not been able to do well versus the run, obviously.
50:05He's a lighter guy.
50:07And he's got some tantalizing pass rush skills, but just has not been able to put it together
50:11as a first-round pick for the Jets.
50:12What you want to see at a pass rusher sometimes, and I spoke about this in the video I'd made,
50:17it's the easy sacks that you have to get.
50:20Like, that Bailey sack against Broderick Jones, that's an easy sack.
50:24That's the equivalent, like I was telling you, when there's a hanging curve as a power hitter
50:29and you just belt it.
50:31That's why I get 50 home runs, because I hit 20 off pitches like that.
50:35McDonald doesn't get sacks in easy ways.
50:38He'll have these crazy spin moves, or he'll be chasing the quarterback all over the place
50:43and get maybe a coverage-ish sack.
50:45Nothing's easy for him getting the quarterback.
50:47You want the easy sacks.
50:48That's how you tally up 14 a year.
50:52It's a good point by you.
50:54Go ahead, Kaz.
50:55How many minutes in were we before Frankie brought up the David Bailey sack?
51:00We're almost an hour.
51:01We're almost done.
51:02We're almost done.
51:03I was going to say, we can't go down.
51:05I had the under, and I lost.
51:07Oh, okay.
51:08Nice.
51:09What did you make of the sack, Kaz?
51:11Is that you're like, okay, I get it.
51:13Yeah, it was great.
51:14It was great.
51:14I mean, Broderick Jones, it was poetic.
51:17Yeah, I thought, yeah, that's what you want to see from him.
51:21He's checked every box that you want to see in training camp.
51:24Now we'll see when the competition improves a little bit and he faces some tough tackles.
51:33We'll see how he does, but he's been impressive every step of the way so far.
51:36Kaz, you know how I've been checking in on a little bit.
51:38I'm going to keep notes on this guy the whole year.
51:41Jadarion Price, guys.
51:42I'm going to keep my notes.
51:44I'm just saying.
51:46Jeremiah Love got hurt, Kaz.
51:48Oh, brother.
51:51Yeah.
51:51Also, one guy's playing for the defending Super Bowl champions.
51:57The other guy's playing for.
51:58Maybe the first overall pick.
52:00Yeah, yeah.
52:01I think that's going to be some tough sledding for Jeremiah Love.
52:05Not wrong.
52:06No, he looked good when he played.
52:07One position we have not brought up in this entire episode that we have to close on is the kicker
52:12situation.
52:14Kaz, they released Cade York earlier this week.
52:16Kaz was right.
52:17Kaz was right.
52:18Obviously, this might not be a strong suit for the Jets this year, which is frustrating because you had Nick
52:24Falk in the building last year.
52:26Is Jason Sanders the starting kicker week one?
52:30Boy, I don't think so, guys.
52:32Wow.
52:32I can just be somebody else in here before week one.
52:36Like, if they televised or streamed Monday's practice, Jets Twitter would have been on fire about the kicking situation because
52:50Cade York went first.
52:52He missed two.
52:53He was three of five.
52:54He missed from, like, I want to say 38 and 43 or 43, 48, something like that.
52:58Ben Sanders comes on.
53:00He goes two of five and missed from 53.
53:05Guys, I'm not sure I've seen him make anything from distance all camp.
53:11Like, he does not have a strong leg at all.
53:16So, I don't know what's out there.
53:18So, maybe there's nothing out there for them to get and bring in.
53:22But, man, I got to think Mugi is freaking burning up the tapes of the UFL kickers.
53:28And is there a soccer player in Bosnia right now?
53:33He's dreamed of kicking footballs.
53:35Is Gus the kicking mule out there?
53:39That's probably too old of a reference for you guys.
53:41Probably.
53:43The goodest Disney movie, the donkey that kicked field goals at one point.
53:48He's got to be looking at everything right now, trying to figure this out.
53:52I mean, does anyone have Pat Leahy's number?
53:54Like, what can they do?
53:58It's bad.
53:59You know what I would look at is Brandon McManus, I believe, is still available.
54:04I wanted him before we.
54:06Is there all field concerns with that guy?
54:07I have no idea.
54:08Yeah, there were, I think.
54:09Oh, there were?
54:10Someone told me the guy that was here briefly is in the competition with the Colts.
54:17Strader?
54:17Is it Spencer Strader?
54:18Yeah.
54:19That the Colts have a kick in competition, and he might be the odd man out there.
54:23So he was here.
54:24He was the guy the Chiefs stole from the Jets.
54:27Yes.
54:27For one year.
54:29Yeah, Strader.
54:29Yeah, I mean, Kaz, when we had gone to camp, we were joking around about when they went for that
54:3663-yard field goal.
54:38And they were literally like, I'm telling you, it was 20 yards short, guys.
54:42Can I ask Kaz?
54:42Yeah, let it go to 10.
54:43Yeah, let it go to 10.
54:45Can I ask a question here?
54:46Let it go to 7.
54:48How the hell do the Jets let Nick Falk?
54:51Again, I know he's old.
54:53But, like, the first time they let him go years ago, I didn't understand it.
54:57Second time now around, it doesn't look great that you let him go again.
55:00And let's not forget, they had thicker kicker, Harrison Mavis, who's the starting kicker for the Los Angeles Rams, who
55:08are Super Bowl favorites right now.
55:10And he's been pretty solid for them, too.
55:13Like, I don't understand.
55:15What am I missing here?
55:16And, mind you, I know that they have one of the brightest minds, you would argue, and Chris Banjo is
55:20a special teams coordinator.
55:22But what is going on with the kicker spot where they can't get this solidified?
55:26When they have Bobby's group.
55:27Those decisions usually aren't the special teams coordinator.
55:30Those decisions, I've learned that through the industry.
55:33Ask Westhoff about some of the moves the Jets have made when he was there.
55:36He loses his mind.
55:40Yeah, and who's Seattle's kicker?
55:42I forget.
55:42Oh, Jason Myers, right?
55:44Like, you know, the Jets had him and let him go.
55:46Yeah, it's puzzling, Ryan.
55:48You know, there's some people with the Jets say Falk wanted to go to Atlanta.
55:52He wanted to kick in a dome.
55:53He wanted to be closer to home.
55:54But he lives in Texas, so it's not like he went to the Cowboys.
55:58He's still in Atlanta.
55:59Like, it's not like he's going to be able to go home all the time after practice to see his
56:02kids.
56:02So, I think, you know, they were probably slow playing a little bit and didn't expect them to get that
56:09contract he got.
56:10And bam.
56:11Nine million, right?
56:12He got nine million.
56:12I think it's – here's beyond the full point, guys.
56:18They're playing the Giants, okay?
56:21The Giants have this kicker from Michigan.
56:23Like, if you looked in the draft, if you did mock drafts, like I did 800 mock drafts of seven
56:31-round things,
56:32he was the kicker that everyone was talking about.
56:35I don't understand.
56:36Like, why not use a seventh-round pick on that guy?
56:38I know.
56:40They draft Vijay Payne.
56:42What's the ceiling for Vijay Payne?
56:45You know, he becomes like a three- or four-year special team, Ashton Davis type of guy,
56:50like a special team player who maybe plays a little safety.
56:54Chances are he's going to be cut within a few years.
56:57So, why not just take a dart throw at a kicker with the seventh-round pick,
57:01take the guy who everyone says is the best kicker in college, and try.
57:06You're right.
57:06You never do it, though.
57:07I don't get it.
57:08Yeah, I think a lot of –
57:09The Giants signed him, too.
57:11Yeah, as an undrafted.
57:12Yeah, Zvada.
57:15Yeah.
57:15Yeah.
57:16He's got a leg, man.
57:18He can boom it.
57:19So, I agree with Kaz, especially when you don't have a kicker.
57:23It's not like we had a kicker.
57:24If you have someone, yeah, I get it.
57:26But if you don't, I mean, yeah.
57:28It's an important position.
57:29It's very important.
57:30That's what I'm saying.
57:31I don't get how we can still be in this spot where you had guys and bodies in the room
57:37that had more confidence in than you do currently right now.
57:42It's just –
57:42The path of this franchise was forever changed when Greg Zerline missed a field goal
57:47in the reign of Denver, right?
57:49Like, Doug Bryant forever – Doug Bryant changed the history of the Jets.
57:53Doug Bryant, yes.
57:54Doug Bryant, 100%.
57:55But, Ryan, Salah doesn't get fired if he makes that field goal.
57:58I know, but I think this franchise was a forever altered play four against the Buffalo
58:04Pills with Aaron Rodgers going down.
58:06That was the next year.
58:07Yeah, I know.
58:08I know.
58:09I know.
58:09You know, Salah doesn't get fired if they win that game.
58:12All right, Kaz.
58:13Who knows what happens?
58:14Kaz, trivia question.
58:15I just pulled this up.
58:16We're doing Kaz trivia now?
58:17We're doing a little Kaz trivia because I didn't know this.
58:20What number was Doug Bryant with the Jets?
58:24Was he number two?
58:26He says – Ryan says two.
58:28Mr. Kaz?
58:29I can't pace you.
58:30Nine?
58:31No.
58:33Sanchez is number six.
58:34Oh.
58:35Nice.
58:36That's unbelievable.
58:37Yeah, because – no, I'm just looking at – I couldn't believe he's rocking the old
58:41six.
58:42Unbelievable.
58:42They can't see that.
58:43Well, I don't know.
58:44You can.
58:44Yeah.
58:45He looks like Mark Sanchez a little.
58:46He looks like Mark Sanchez's father out there.
58:49Mr. Costello, thank you for hopping on here, giving us all your –
58:51That's it, Ryan, huh?
58:52Yeah.
58:53Thank you for giving us all your insight on the roster crunch.
58:57All right.
58:57We'll be looking forward to your coverage tomorrow night and obviously throughout the
59:00cuts, throughout the weekend.
59:02And then we'll talk to you next week.
59:05We'll do a little bit of season preview.
59:06And then before you know it, it's going to be week one, man.
59:09I can't wait to see the chicken parm set.
59:13We'll bake some chicken parm in the middle of the season preview.
59:16Like, make some analogies for you.
59:18Cosby, thank you, man.
59:19We'll catch up with you next week, all right?
59:21Later, Cos.
59:22Thanks, guys.
