00:00Sorry I'm late, all right. Last class we talked about dictatorship so today we'll
00:13start with Hegel. It was Hegel who said that all the great greatest world events
00:20happened twice and then Karl Marx added the first time it was a tragedy the
00:26second time. It's a farce. Hey guys welcome back to Interprises once again this is
00:33your host and you're here today for you as part of my underrated masterpiece
00:40segments but today I'm gonna be reviewing enemies. Now if you guys don't know
00:51enemies is a neo-noir type psychological thriller that is directed by Dennis
00:57I can't really pronounce his name but you know he's a Canadian director that's really
01:02blowing up in the art hall scan these days. It's actually an adaptation of a novel
01:11called The Double write a book. Now the interesting part in this movie right is
01:18that well first of the the main stars is Jake Gyllenhaal and then you also have the
01:28girl Mary Laurie that's pronounced her name and Sarah Gordon is a bit of Mussolini. Those are the main actors
01:38you are looking at but here's interesting part of this movie you have Jake Gyllenhaal as the MC
01:45here but he's playing a two roles in the movie you know where the men he's they're like
01:53basically the first guy there in the girl where he can probably say that they're like twins or clones
01:58but they have different personalities and different roles like in terms of their
02:04personalities. Now that's from the character perspective in terms of the plot in
02:09this movie it's quite I don't know how to say this but it's won't help a plot tell their
02:16children okay now let me try to see how I can take it to a side based on what the
02:23wikipedia page says mana turns for the show featuring my own at underground club you
02:30know this has the woman naked and the words of crushing a life to her under her feet
02:35so now then he goes back to the MC Adam Bell he's a college history professor he lives a
02:43wanting life where he just he works at the university and he goes back to the
02:47apartment and he just hangs out his girlfriend then what happens is that he
02:51rents this movie and he notices that all the actors in the movie look strikingly
02:56like himself like straight down to the T so briefly he starts searching it up and
03:03he finds the actor named Anthony Clare and his stage name is Daniel Stone Clare now
03:09he rents the other films in which this guy has appeared in and then he ends up like
03:14yeah again I'm really interested in him it's all like obsession like obsession with
03:21he wants to like find out more about him he starts looking through his boxes he has a photo of look like
03:28what someone who looks like when a woman's hand over his shoulder now the funny thing is a photo
03:34it's still not making anyone possible to tell them like okay now assessment then he gets back to the powder
03:42Adam stalking Anthony he visits his tower into agency where the guy at the
03:49receptionist mistakes him for Anthony giving him a letter and on the letter you know it to me or such he
03:58discovers where his apartment is he calls his home but he has a parent in life on the phone instead who is pregnant she ends up
04:06he's taking him for Anthony because he thinks he's a joke but he insists he's not Anthony and he's actually trying to contact Anthony
04:13she gets weird about what I mean he ends up call is actually a pretty funny scene
04:18let me just skim through the plot before I actually get into the rest of that
04:21now Helen afterwards confronted Anthony about the phone call and
04:27Adam's existence but Anthony insists he knows nothing there's no she's talking about
04:32and afterwards Helen starts to look into Adam
04:37discovers the colleges where he's teaching and she finds him and she's like super shocked and crazy
04:45over how much she resembles her husband
04:49at the same time
04:51Adam doesn't even know who she is
04:54now Anthony eventually calls Adam and they agree to meet in a hotel room
04:59where they discover they are perfectly identical
05:04even having the same sky
05:06at first Adam is sort of like thrown off guard by his personality
05:10and then he insists that this is all the mistakes and he flees
05:14then afterwards the two men begin having sort of like similar dreams
05:20which first feature a naked water spider set
05:24and then afterwards a giant skyscrapers spider walking amongst the sea window
05:29and the next day Anthony is now stalking Adam
05:32he sees Adam's girlfriend
05:34Mary
05:35who he finds a child to
05:37right
05:38Anthony plots to accuse Adam of sleeping with his wife
05:41and
05:42shame I manipulate Adam until they don't sleep with Mary to get Ebon
05:46he also takes Adam's clothes and his car for a night
05:52which is like a terminated move when you think about it
05:55or a reference
05:57then he promises to disappear after that
05:59Adam complies
06:01then Anthony goes impersonating him
06:03and takes a mandatory hotel
06:06cross-references right
06:07while this is happening
06:08Adam goes to Anthony's apartment in retaliation
06:11and he is inside
06:13and the building
06:15the employee that's accommodating him
06:19he begs him to go down to the underground sex club that was shown earlier in the movie
06:25now in the apartment
06:27Adam finds a frame-fold in his shirt
06:29which looks like the one he found early in his own house
06:32but this time the photo is intact
06:34and the one is revealed to be Helen
06:37now Adam tries to act as Anthony's dwelling
06:40but it appears that she recognises his nicer demeanour
06:44and she's like
06:45okay, this is Anthony
06:47she pretends not to nose-hand costume
06:49later that night however
06:51Helen waits to find Adam
06:52in her cries and apologises
06:55she tells him she wants him to stay and they make out
06:59now back at the hotel where you go back to the other guy, Anthony
07:04you have Mary panicking during sex
07:07where she knows the marriage ring mark on his fingers
07:10is actually who he really is
07:12because
07:13in
07:14you know
07:15Adam
07:17he's not married
07:19but Anthony is married to Helen
07:21so yeah
07:22that's one of the key differences
07:23the mark of the ring on the finger
07:26now
07:27Anthony claims he always had the mark
07:29the two get into a fight in the car
07:32which results in a high-speed crash
07:35he's only killing both
07:37and
07:38that seems like you kind of wait out a shot
07:41but whatever
07:42now the next day
07:43Adam just ran to his clothes
07:45and finally opened a confidential letter received earlier
07:47he finds a key to learn the gun sex club
07:50given to only select members
07:53now his temptation gets a bet seven
07:56he acts
07:57alright he's going out but she doesn't respond
07:59he enters the better man
08:01behogo
08:01he sees this
08:03giant tarantula
08:05and then he
08:07basically sighs
08:08and that's
08:09pretty much it for
08:10for the plot
08:11for this movie
08:12um
08:13you know this
08:14this movie
08:16this is one of those movies where the plot
08:20doesn't really make sense
08:22unless you
08:22like really
08:24try to force it to
08:26where
08:27that you really pay attention
08:28and you like
08:29you rewatch it
08:30several times
08:30and i
08:31i've actually watched at least
08:33three times
08:34so far
08:35um
08:35but it's like a while ago
08:37and
08:38i've noticed that how it's
08:40you know
08:41described as a
08:42neo-no psychological thriller
08:44it means that
08:45the plotting
08:47how it's structured
08:48it can be interpreted in several ways
08:51as to how
08:53and what it actually means
08:56you know
08:57in a movie
08:57it tells a story
08:59but the story
09:00it can be like
09:01you know
09:02different ways
09:03right
09:04and
09:05from what i can gather
09:06there are several different theories
09:08as to
09:08what this movie is entailing
09:10initially people thought this movie was going to like
09:12predict
09:13this like
09:14big
09:15giant
09:16spider invasion or something
09:18and that's
09:19like
09:20far from the truth
09:22when you look at the type of movies
09:24is
09:24a
09:25spider invasion that
09:26very much
09:27way off
09:28in terms of like
09:29predicting what it's actually about
09:31and
09:32there are other people saying that
09:33okay
09:34he is
09:35finding out a clone
09:37and
09:38the
09:38people are speculating
09:39this is a theory that
09:41where
09:41he is finding
09:43a clone of himself
09:44living a different life
09:46and all the other stuff
09:47where you know
09:48this is where you are actually taking
09:50seriously
09:51because remember
09:52at the end of the day
09:53this is a psychological trailer
09:55let's actually take a look at what the actual director himself
09:58state about this movie
10:01this movie is a documentary about my subconscious
10:03it's the story of a man that has an affair and he's married
10:13he's a man
10:14a married man having an affair
10:16he's going back to his woman to his couple
10:20and we see that from the subconscious point of view
10:23that's the way i can explain the story
10:25alright guys did you catch a bit
10:28he said subconsciousness
10:30so a lot of this basically goes inside
10:33Jake Gyllenhaal's head
10:35and you know his characters
10:37and when you look at it
10:39the personalities of two different characters he's playing are basically personalities of the same character
10:45where he is this teacher
10:48by will because he has to make money
10:50he has to make a living
10:51but he also aspires to be as actor
10:53and to like have all this
10:56you know
10:57popularity and all this stuff
10:59and there's two different personalities
11:01he makes it up
11:02to like sort of like live all this fantasy
11:05but at the same time
11:06he ends up in this crossfire
11:08with this relationship
11:10and which is like sort of like hinted at
11:13somewhere in the middle of the movie
11:15where he meets his mother
11:17in that scene she hints at him
11:20and there's no trouble with women
11:23and relationships
11:25right
11:26it's nothing like direct
11:27so it's like
11:28it's like a subtle hint on
11:30on something to pick up on
11:32and you notice that you're like
11:33hmmm
11:34then you look at the other scenes
11:35in which he was interacting with his girlfriend
11:38and one where he was interacting with the wife
11:41when you look at how different the personalities are getting
11:44what is happening is that
11:46his wife
11:47do you know the pregnant lady
11:48when she gets worried about him
11:50she's starting to notice how his psyche
11:54his mind is splitting apart
11:55and he's basically playing two guys
11:58but she notices this
11:59this is why she has this sort of reaction to him
12:02or why she gets you know like
12:04this argument with him about
12:05who is adam and all this other stuff
12:07and then you look at the response
12:09where anthony's reacting and he's like
12:12it's a man
12:13i don't want to get anything
12:15it was a man
12:16it was a man
12:17and you know it's getting all defensive
12:20when she's questioning about
12:22who is the guy on the phone
12:24thinking that she's
12:26he's cheating on her
12:28so it's a way back and forth there
12:30i mean if you look at it
12:31if you try to like think it through
12:33piece by piece and then look at it together
12:36this movie is like a sort of like
12:40like looking at a puzzle
12:42but the mirror image is flipped
12:45so you like account for the fact that
12:48the overall image of your puzzle
12:50is sort of like mirror flipped
12:53as you're trying to piece together
12:55the whole image
12:56and i think that's what some people
12:58and most people went through over their heads
13:01when they're like
13:02hanging through this right
13:03because remember it's
13:04at the end of the day
13:05this is psychological thriller
13:07i know it comes to psychological thriller
13:09things are going on their head
13:11right
13:12it's not always like
13:13what you're seeing is
13:15what is happening
13:16when you look at the whole team of the
13:18the spiders right
13:19people took that literally
13:21as if
13:22spiders are actually coming
13:23when it's not
13:24what it means is that
13:25it's like a symbolism
13:27for what's happening to the MC
13:29he knows that only
13:31the MC is seeing the spiders
13:33no one else has seen them
13:35it's happening in his head
13:36it is not pointing at the fact that
13:38the girlfriend
13:39or the wife
13:40or the mother
13:41or any other character
13:42notices it
13:43even the scene where the gigantic spiders
13:46roam into the city
13:47there is no reaction
13:48i mean you're telling me that a giant spider
13:50this movie could be an invasion
13:53right
13:54and you're saying this is a giant spider
13:55to be in a city
13:56and this movie is about a spider invasion
13:58but yet no one's reacting to it
14:01like they're not hearing anybody
14:03like dude
14:04if there was a
14:05giant spider like that
14:06actually walking into the city
14:07it would be like
14:09watching Godzilla
14:10you know
14:11everybody's going up and down
14:12going crazy
14:13but it's not
14:14because it's not really there
14:16and that's the thing
14:17it's something that's
14:19in
14:20the MC's
14:22and it's like symbolizing what is happening to the MC
14:26from a psychological perspective
14:29you know he's struggling to maintain
14:31his relationships
14:33and
14:34he's
14:35getting caught up
14:36in this whole relationship
14:38debacle
14:39which is
14:40partially why you have the whole spider
14:42theme going on
14:44it's supposed to sort of represent
14:47his relationship
14:49like getting caught up and tangled in the spider's web
14:52now
14:53given the whole plotting and
14:55the theme of this movie
14:56I'd say
14:57what happened to Jake is that
14:59his brain just split in two and he's become like
15:02two separate people
15:03he's no longer himself
15:04he's either A or B
15:06like left or right
15:07he's not in the middle
15:08where it's like both together
15:10and that's where you have all this sort of like
15:12craziness going on
15:14because
15:15he's
15:16being
15:17this guy to this person
15:19and then he's like
15:20being this guy to that person
15:22the only time where he
15:24and
15:25you know like Anthony and Adam
15:26is
15:27actually
15:28seeing each other
15:29is
15:30by themselves
15:31you don't see them
15:32interacting
15:33with
15:34you know the wives
15:35or girlfriends
15:36at the same time
15:37whatever
15:38they're like either one
15:39or the other that's
15:40interacting with them
15:41you know having like
15:42double personalities and such
15:44um
15:45there's a word for it
15:46i just can't remember what it is
15:48but
15:49with that
15:50you have him
15:51going crazy
15:52but in the end of the movie
15:54in the end of the movie
15:55he realizes
15:56it's a turnaround
15:58you know where
15:59Anthony guy dies in a car crash
16:01and the Adam guy
16:02he's like reconciled
16:04with Anthony's
16:05wife
16:06what she realizes is basically
16:07it's Adam's wife
16:08who was just worried about him
16:10and what's happening to him
16:11and that's how she reacts to him
16:12where she's like
16:13oh
16:14he's not
16:15playing the
16:16Anthony
16:17personality
16:18he's not playing that
16:19actor personality anymore
16:20around there
16:21and
16:22she ends up being like
16:23more intimate towards him
16:24while
16:25the Anthony guy is going crazy
16:26with
16:27the girlfriend
16:28and they crash and die
16:29what's happening there
16:30is that he's snapping out of it
16:31and he's going back
16:32to his
16:33normal self
16:34which is
16:35some
16:36version of Adam
16:37i won't say directly Adam
16:38but some version of what
16:39Adam
16:40was portrayed as
16:41given that there's some things
16:42that Adam
16:43was saying
16:44doing that wasn't really adding
16:45up
16:46per se
16:47but yeah
16:49overall
16:50the main
16:51piece of this movie is that Adam
16:53he's not really that
16:55good
16:56with the
16:57with the women
16:58with the relationships
16:59you know he's
17:00very easily
17:01given into temptation
17:03he doesn't really have that strong up he will
17:05he has relationship problems
17:07he also has
17:09he also has commitment problems
17:11because at the ending
17:12after the whole debacle
17:14and the closure
17:15you see him finding
17:16the envelope
17:17with the key
17:18back to the same
17:19underground
17:20sex club
17:22with the lady
17:23stepping on the spider
17:24and what does that mean
17:26it means that he is given back into the temptation
17:28that got him
17:29into where he was in the first place
17:31that's how you got
17:32that's how you got
17:33the giant spider
17:34and that's why you got
17:35the giant spider
17:36and that's why you got him sighing
17:37and that
17:38you know
17:39emotionless reaction
17:40because he realizes
17:42oh shit
17:43this is deja vu
17:44i've been in this place before
17:46when you realize that
17:47then you start to realize
17:48oh
17:49so that's what the movie's about
17:51very interesting way to
17:53do a
17:54neo nor psychological movie
17:57it's also very well
17:59made
18:00when you look at this movie
18:01the
18:02the way it's directed
18:03like
18:04denise
18:05finnell
18:06or whatever you pronounce his name
18:07he's a really good director
18:09it has
18:10pretty good
18:11cinematography
18:12good visuals
18:13and
18:14good scenery
18:15he knows how to frame it up right
18:17how to plan it out
18:19also
18:21the
18:22this movie has
18:23really good acting
18:24and it's
18:25very much largely thanks to
18:27Jake
18:28general's performance
18:29he
18:30really carries this movie
18:31on his shoulders
18:32playing two roles
18:34of essentially the same character
18:36just by watching this you can see
18:38just how good his acting chops have
18:40my wife
18:41did you sleep with my wife?
18:42did you fuck my wife?
18:44did you fuck my wife?
18:46did you fuck my wife?
18:48did you fuck my wife?
18:52did you fuck my wife?
18:53that's
18:55good
18:56that is
19:00fun

19:05listing
19:06om
19:07when he's
19:08arguing with
19:09the wife
19:10he makes it
19:12kind of like comedic and entertaining because you know chik jen and all he does acting it makes it
19:21more entertaining than it actually is enough for you we could actually make it through watching
19:27the movie like if this was not chik jen hall like if it was like some other actor like one of those
19:33ad-hose actors then this movie would bring it straight to the degree of probably some streaming
19:39service sellout because it's real chik jen hall's you know his name is popular yet gets his movie to
19:48sell it gets people to actually want to see it and i'd say he does it well he carries this movie
19:55and he's done a pretty excellent job portraying two different personalities is really something else
20:03and i will say it does have some pretty strong replay value guys yes with jake jen hall's acting
20:11he really kills it a lot of replay value so there's that to it but now overall
20:19to sum it up i'd give this movie a
20:24i'd say it's a 9 out of 10 you know it's it's excellent um given the stuff i've been saying
20:33about the movie it probably assumed that it's a perfect movie but it's not a perfect movie there's
20:39certain things that could have been like do away from the movie that's neither here though it's it's
20:47not like major stuff right so yeah this movie enemy with jake jen hall it's a excellent movie um it's
20:56very underrated i'd say it's a underrated masterpiece too right so yeah now that pretty much sums up my
