00:00Tom, let's flip it over to Major League Baseball and talk a little Shohei Ohtani.
00:03Obviously, we've talked many times on baseball shows.
00:06If he pitches and he hits well, he's going to be the MVP
00:08because he's so far and away the best player in baseball.
00:11But here's an interesting concept on the Kelsey Marketplace.
00:14Can Ohtani be the Cy Young winner and also MVP winner at the same time in 2026?
00:20Here's my issue with this, Tom, and let me know what you think.
00:22He's going to be the MVP, but the Cy Young, is it too much, too soon?
00:27Meaning, are we going to expect Ohtani to throw six, seven-plus innings here
00:30all the way throughout the summer when he hasn't done it for the past couple years?
00:33Because for me, I think he wins the MVP, but I do think they ease back
00:38heading into maybe August or September and limit those innings
00:41to make sure he's fresh for a playoff run.
00:43What do you think about Ohtani and the Cy Young MVP in the same season?
00:47MVP, sure.
00:48You know, I could write that ticket now.
00:50I think he'll win that.
00:51The issue with the Cy Young, to your point, is it's a bit too much, too soon.
00:55And, you know, if you were to look on fan graphs and you were to look at qualified pitchers
00:59in terms of, you know, just across the entire league, not just the NL,
01:02he's technically not among qualified pitchers in terms of innings.
01:06And we've seen him take a day off in terms of hitting when he's pitching.
01:09And we've seen just a little bit of adjustments that the Dodgers are making.
01:12And maybe they are easing back on him.
01:14You know, got hit in the hand the other day.
01:16Now, listen, his ERA is there.
01:17His stats are there.
01:19But with what Chris Sanchez is doing and with what Paul Skeens is going to ultimately do,
01:23those are going to be the front runners.
01:24So when he's just half a step behind in terms of the innings, that will hold him back when we
01:29have guys out here
01:30that are going to be just as good as him in terms of strikeouts, in terms of, you know, walks
01:35and whip and ERA
01:36and all these underlying metrics.
01:37But if they have more innings than him, that's what will propel them forward.
01:41Yeah.
01:43I mean, let's not forget about Miz, too.
01:46I mean, with how Milwaukee is playing.
01:48And I think he's the second favorite right now for the National League Cy Young.
01:53Another loss three in a row for Paul Skeens.
01:56And, you know, right now, if you still think he and he pitched well last night.
02:00But, my goodness, there might be some buy low opportunities in this National League Cy Young watch here,
02:07including Otani, including Chris Sale.
02:10I mean, there's a lot of names here that could make a run at this.
02:14It really could.
02:15And this is one of the interesting things where, you know, we did see Skeens and Sale both start yesterday,
02:21Sanchez the day before.
02:22This is one of the times where it's like, you have to be looking at the schedule.
02:25Because if one of these guys has a down game, you know, Grant, like I said, Skeens was phenomenal yesterday.
02:31One-on-run, 10-strike guys.
02:32He just didn't get the win.
02:33But if one of these guys has a down game and then they drop and the other two happened to
02:37start yesterday
02:37and they have great starts, that's where you can buy low in one of them.
02:40Just because the market's going to be fluctuating, we're going to be in and out on opposite days.
02:43They're both going to be pitching on the same day.
02:45If someone gets blown up, that's where you buy low.
02:48Yeah, it's a great topic to bring up, too, because Sanchez is riding that high.
02:51Can he go 50, 60 innings in a row without giving up an earned run?
02:55His story things do catapult you up top, but I do take a look at it.
02:58I don't like the Elay to Braves.
02:59I always say that.
02:59But Chris Sale right now at a 10-cent contract, $100 investment pays back $1,000 if he wins the
03:06Cy Young.
03:07And Joe and I always talk about this as well as you, Tom.
03:09He doesn't have to win it.
03:10He just has to get close and improve that contract and it will be profitable.
03:13And that's the name of the game.
03:15Let me flip it over for you, Tommy.
03:16The AL Rookie of the Year winner, Murakami's been nothing short of spectacular.
03:22$17 million.
03:23And according to Fangraphs, Tom, he's already made $16.3 million this year.
03:27What a steal at this point.
03:29He's at 47%.
03:30Is he your frontrunner?
03:32And could he get the job done when it's all said and done?
03:34You know, he's their frontrunner at this point.
03:36I think it's deservingly so.
03:38I still think there's a path forward for McGonagall or Chase the Ladder, whatever it might be.
03:43But if you're going to be up there near the top in the top three, four, five of home runs
03:47for the AL, he has to be in the conversation.
03:49I think it's a little bit too much at this point.
03:51We're just sitting on May 29th.
03:53But if we get to this point around the all-star break and he's still in the top three in
03:56the AL home runs, I think it's looking like him.
