00:00And it was the host this weekend of the CJ Cup, TPC Craig Ranch.
00:04Now, I have to set the table for you here, Smiley.
00:08This was Lanny Wadkins to Golf Week regarding the renovation he did this past year of TPC Craig Ranch
00:14after Scotty Scheffler's winning score of 31 under last year in 2025.
00:19Lanny said, invited clubs, by the way, shout out invited clubs.
00:22They've hosted Jackson and I a number of times play golf out there.
00:24We always love that on the road.
00:26Invited clubs basically said they didn't want 30 under winning the thing anymore.
00:29And I told them, don't worry.
00:31And the winning score this week was Wyndham Clark at 30 under.
00:36So, you know, it's okay.
00:39And if I can add a little more context, because this has become a bit of a joke on golf
00:43social media.
00:44I'm going to give you some quotes from Scotty Scheffler on Wednesday, Jordan Spieth on Friday,
00:48and Wyndham Clark on Saturday, and then get your thoughts on the course.
00:52Scotty said, I think TD Green is definitely better than what it was before.
00:55It's a more interesting test.
00:57The Greens have added a significant amount of slope to them.
01:00A lot of it depends on where they want to put the pins.
01:02If they want to get really aggressive, the scoring could be drastically different.
01:05If they wanted the winning score here to be 5 to 10 under par, I think they could do it
01:08if they wanted to,
01:09just based on where they put the pins.
01:11That was on Wednesday prior to the tournament beginning.
01:13Then we got two days in.
01:15We heard from Jordan Spieth after his round on Friday.
01:17And he said, I think the problem right now is this is like the first time in the history of
01:20Dallas
01:21that you have four or five days of very little East win and soft conditions in May.
01:25You get your normal what we had on Monday.
01:27I hear that's how it's designed.
01:28I think it would show that it's significantly harder, but also fair.
01:32And then Wyndham Clark said after his round on Saturday, I initially thought we were playing
01:35the practice round.
01:36It was going to make the course tougher.
01:37Clearly, it hasn't.
01:38In defense of the new design, it's been really wet.
01:41No win, regardless of what you do.
01:43We're so good.
01:43Now we're going to make a lot of birdies.
01:47Smiley, you'd heard some good things out of the rants to start the week.
01:51And now here we are.
01:52We have another 30-under winning score.
01:54Just tell me where your head's at.
01:58I tell you what.
02:03That is an all-time quote.
02:05Like, prior to the event.
02:07And then it actually 30-under wins.
02:09That is, you know, he just had to turn off the television at the end of that turn and
02:13just be like, well.
02:17I saw a good meme of like, you watch Succession where I think it's Roman where he's like in
02:21charge of some rocket launch.
02:24Some Twitter account posts this.
02:25He's looking at all the messages filing in after the rocket explodes on the platform.
02:30And it's like, oh, yeah, that one didn't go the way I wanted it to.
02:34Yeah, I mean, I don't know, man.
02:38It's a bummer.
02:40Like, wet, wet, no wind.
02:43We talk about it all the time.
02:44These guys are too good.
02:45And I don't care how hard you make a golf course.
02:49Based on what I was seeing, though, around the greens, still got zoysia stuff around the
02:53greens.
02:54So that's easy to me.
02:56So when you see why a lot of times scores get very low, it's around the greens.
03:01If it's super simple to get up and down.
03:03I know there's a bunch of slope, which makes it challenging.
03:05But if you have good lies, there was a couple spotty lies, I could tell.
03:09But for the most part, guys were able to spin it.
03:12They were kind of be able to control their golf ball because it's ball in hand.
03:15That's easy.
03:16And these guys are really good with their irons and give them a bunch of par fives throughout
03:21the week.
03:21I think Scottie only made one five throughout the whole week.
03:25Yeah, scores are going to be low.
03:26And I just feel bad for Siwoo.
03:29That's that's that's kind of my takeaway.
03:31Yeah.
03:31What else is the guy got to do to win this year?
03:33Can you imagine going out?
03:35I mean, playing the way he did the first three days, but today he goes out.
03:38He's got a few shots lead.
03:40He shoots a six under 65 and he loses by three shots.
03:45I mean, I just don't know what else you can do.
03:47I think that's an interesting point you make, too, about just, you know, turf grasses.
03:52And I know this is not like a classical design, but when you're just thinking about the
03:56characteristics of a course, especially, you know, and this one, I actually don't know
03:59if they have Bermuda in the greens or not, but I know a lot of Dallas area courses stick
04:03with bent grass and spend a lot of money on the maintenance.
04:05And that's what Colonial did when Gil Hance redesigned that.
04:08But just the difference between a golf course that has played with Bermuda grass for a number
04:14of years and wants to retain those playing characteristics and then puts in some sort
04:19of Bermuda around their approaches, but uses zoysia in the fairways where it plays a lot
04:23better.
04:25Just thinking about the way you want a golf course to play, not only from, you know,
04:30tee to fairway and approach, but also around the green.
04:33And it's interesting that, you know, if it still looks like there's zoysia around the greens
04:36there at TBC, Craig ranch, you're going to get a lot of Astro turf flies, right?
04:41Yeah.
04:42I mean, I think the best formula for the South, uh, I guess you can consider Dallas the South.
04:48It's, uh, I guess more South.
04:50I want to think of Southeast golf courses.
04:52I think of more, uh, zoysia fairways, Bermuda rough, Bermuda approaches, Bermuda greens, like
04:57that's kind of the best formula for, for a firmer, faster golf course.
05:01The, you know, I think, I think, um, uh, TBC Southland is like a, a prime example of
05:07those, all of those, uh, different, uh, grasses.
05:10I love approach grasses that started about 30 yards out that, that turns into a really
05:14tight Bermuda so that, you know, when you play shots into the green, they still play
05:18firm, but also the zoysia's, uh, grass off, you know, off of the fairway.
05:24Uh, it, it definitely linked to the juicy game.
