Downpours are providing some much-needed drought relief across the Southeast.
Transcript
00:00Well, let's take you now to the southeast, where the rain continues to come down across the region, including here
00:05in Atlanta.
00:06Look at this footage. We have been hit hard by some downpours.
00:10We need the rain there in Atlanta. It's been a significant drought.
00:13Speaking of drought relief, Mobile, Alabama, 16 inches of rain so far this month.
00:20In Mobile, it's the wettest May in the record books.
00:23Data goes back to the late 1800s there.
00:26So, hey, that's a great way to get out of a drought.
00:28But we've had some deadly flash flooding in the same area.
00:31So, again, a lot of danger tied to this.
00:35Again, a lot of dangers tied to the flash flooding.
00:37We're going to get more drought relief in some areas.
00:39And while we did see, again, over 16 inches in Mobile, that's not the case in all areas.
00:44Places like Charleston and up into Fayetteville, North Carolina, Charlotte, we could use a lot more rain than we've seen.
00:50It's been a more modest dent in the drought with this month's rain in those areas.
00:56So, it's been kind of favoring the central Gulf Coast.
00:58More storms out there Friday.
00:59I know we're going to focus on the southeast, but just briefly looking west, I do want to acknowledge the
01:04Panhandle region,
01:05where there will also be some thunderstorms that become severe on Friday afternoon and night.
01:09Hail and damaging winds are the main concerns there.
01:12So, there are kind of two competing storylines when we pull the map out just a smidge and look at
01:17this whole southern U.S. area.
01:19We've got drought relief draped along this front, running from Missouri down to North Florida and Georgia.
01:25And then, separate from that, severe thunderstorms bubbling up on Friday evening into areas around Texas and a little bit
01:32of Oklahoma.
01:33Saturday, in fact, we're going to do it again.
01:34More storms, drought relief there near and south of I-20, but also another round of strong to severe storms
01:42and somewhat of a narrow band from Texas all the way up into the northern plains.
01:45Sunday, some of that dislodges and moves a little farther east with more thunderstorms and drought relief.
01:51So, Saturday, lots of green on the map.
01:53There will be some severe weather in parts of the plains, but more drought-relieving rainfall in the southeast.
01:58Regarding the severe threat, here we are with hail and damaging wind.
02:02Dakotas down to west-central Texas again.
02:05It's a narrow but somewhat scattered band of intense thunderstorms.
02:09And Sunday, the downpours continue in the southeast.
02:13It's really needed.
02:14This drought is very substantial still in south Georgia and north Florida.
02:18And over the next few days here, we look at Thursday through Saturday,
02:22kind of narrowing down that band of rain to a three-day window.
02:26We're looking at two to four inches of drought relief for many areas.
