00:17When a wicked person turns from the wickedness he has committed, and does what is just and right, he will
00:26preserve his life.
00:30For I am aware of my rebellious acts, I am forever conscious of my sin.
00:39Hide your face from my sins, wipe away all my guilt.
00:47The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit, O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.
01:01Dearly beloved brothers and sisters, the scripture moves us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our many sins and
01:10wickedness.
01:12We should not justify nor hide them before the face of Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, but confess them with
01:20a humble, lowly, penitent and obedient heart.
01:24To the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy.
01:35Although we ought always to humbly acknowledge our sins before God, we should do this particularly when we assemble and
01:43meet together,
01:44to give thanks for the great benefits we have received at his hands.
01:48To give him most worthy praise, to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are truly
01:57necessary as well for the body as the soul.
02:02Therefore I pray and ask you, who are present here today, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble
02:09voice to the throne of the heavenly grace, as we say together.
02:16Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
02:23We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
02:29We have offended against your holy laws.
02:32We have failed to do those things which we ought to have done, and we have done things which we
02:39ought not to have done.
02:44But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable sinners.
02:49Spare those, O God, who confess their faults.
02:53Restore those who are truly penitent, according to your promises declared to mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.
03:03Grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to
03:12the glory of your holy name. Amen.
03:18Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord, to your faithful people, pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all
03:26their sins, and serve you with a quiet mind.
03:30Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
03:38Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be your name.
03:43Your kingdom come, your will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
03:50Give us this day our daily bread.
03:53Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
03:59Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
04:05For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
04:15O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing out your praise.
04:23O God, make speed to save us.
04:27O Lord, make haste to help us.
04:33Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
04:39As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
04:45Amen.
04:48Praise the Lord.
04:50The Lord's name be praised.
04:57Psalm 114
05:00When Israel left Egypt, when the family of Jacob left a foreign nation behind,
05:06Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his kingdom.
05:11The sea looked and fled.
05:13The Jordan River turned back.
05:16The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.
05:22Why do you flee, O sea?
05:25Why do you turn back, O Jordan River?
05:28Why do you skip like rams, O mountains, like lambs, O hills?
05:35Tremble, O earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob,
05:39who turned a rock into a pool of water,
05:42a hard rock into springs of water.
05:47Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
05:51As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
05:55world without end.
05:56Amen.
06:01Psalm 115
06:04Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
06:06but in your name bring honour,
06:08for the sake of your loyal love and faithfulness.
06:13Why should the nations say,
06:15Where is their God?
06:17Our God is in heaven.
06:19He does whatever he pleases.
06:23Their idols are made of silver and gold.
06:26They are man-made.
06:28They have mouths, but cannot speak.
06:31Eyes, but cannot see.
06:34Ears, but cannot hear.
06:36Noses, but cannot smell.
06:39Hands, but cannot touch feet,
06:41but cannot walk.
06:43They cannot even clear their throats.
06:46Those who make them will end up like them,
06:49as will everyone who trusts in them.
06:52O Israel, trust in the Lord.
06:55He is their deliverer and protector.
06:58O family of Aaron, trust in the Lord.
07:01He is their deliverer and protector.
07:05You loyal followers of the Lord,
07:08trust in the Lord.
07:10He is their deliverer and protector.
07:14The Lord takes notice of us.
07:17He will bless.
07:18He will bless the family of Israel.
07:20He will bless the family of Aaron.
07:23He will bless his loyal followers,
07:26both young and old.
07:28May he increase your numbers,
07:31yours and your children's.
07:34May you be blessed by the Lord,
07:36the creator of heaven and earth.
07:40The heavens belong to the Lord,
07:42but the earth he has given to mankind.
07:46The dead do not praise the Lord,
07:48nor do any of those who descend
07:51into the silence of death.
07:54But we shall praise the Lord now and for evermore.
07:58Praise the Lord.
08:00Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
08:05as it was in the beginning,
08:06is now and ever shall be,
08:09world without end.
08:19The prophet Jeremiah chapter 38.
08:25Shephetiah the son of Matan,
08:27and Gedaliah the son of Pashar,
08:29and Jukal the son of Shelemiah,
08:31and Pashar the son of Malkhaziah,
08:34heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people,
08:37saying,
08:37Yahweh says,
08:39He who remains in the city will die by the sword,
08:41by the famine and by the pestilence.
08:44But he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live,
08:47and he will escape with his life,
08:50and he will live.
08:52Yahweh says,
08:53This city will surely be given
08:55into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon,
08:57and he will take it.
09:00Then the princes said to the king,
09:03Let this man be put to death,
09:05because he weakens the hands of the men of war
09:08who remain in the city,
09:09and the hands of all the people,
09:11in speaking such words to them.
09:14For this man does not seek the welfare of this people,
09:17but harm.
09:20And Zedekiah the king said,
09:22Behold, he is in your hand,
09:24for the king cannot do anything to oppose you.
09:29Then they took Jeremiah
09:31and threw him into the dungeon of Malkhaziah,
09:34the king's son,
09:35that was in the court of the guard.
09:38They let down Jeremiah with cords,
09:41and in the dungeon there was no water but mud,
09:45and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
09:49Now when Ebed-Melech, the Ethiopian,
09:52a eunuch who was in the king's house,
09:55heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon,
09:59the king was then sitting in Benjamin's gate.
10:03Ebed-Melech went out of the king's house
10:05and spoke to the king, saying,
10:07My lord the king,
10:09these men have done evil
10:10in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet,
10:13whom they have cast into the dungeon.
10:16He is likely to die in the place where he is,
10:19because of the famine,
10:20for there is no more bread in the city.
10:24Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech,
10:27the Ethiopian, saying,
10:28Take from here thirty men with you,
10:31and take up Jeremiah the prophet
10:33out of the dungeon before he dies.
10:36So Ebed-Melech took men with him
10:39and went into the house of the king
10:41under the treasury,
10:43and took from their rags and worn-out garments,
10:46and led them down by cords
10:47into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
10:52Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah,
10:54Put these rags and worn-out garments
10:56under your armpits under the cords.
10:59Jeremiah did so,
11:01and so they drew up Jeremiah with the cords,
11:03and took him up out of the dungeon.
11:06And Jeremiah remained in the course of the guard.
11:12Then Zedekiah the king sent
11:14and took Jeremiah the prophet to himself
11:17into the third entry that is in Yahweh's house.
11:22The king said to Jeremiah,
11:24I will ask you something.
11:26Hide nothing from me.
11:30Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,
11:32If I declare it to you,
11:34will you not surely put me to death?
11:37If you give you counsel,
11:38you will not listen.
11:41So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah,
11:44saying,
11:45As Yahweh lives who made us this soul,
11:47I will not put you to death.
11:49Neither will I give you into the hand
11:51of those men who seek your life.
11:54Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,
11:57Yahweh the God of armies,
11:58the God of Israel says,
12:00If you go out to the king of Babylon's princes,
12:03then your soul will live
12:05and the city will not be burnt with fire.
12:07You will live along with your house.
12:10But if you do not go out
12:12to the king of Babylon's princes,
12:14then this city will be given
12:16into the hands of the Chaldeans
12:18and they will burn it with fire
12:20and you will not escape out of their hand.
12:25Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah,
12:28I am afraid of the Jews
12:30who have already defected to the Chaldeans,
12:32lest they deliver me into their hand
12:35and they mock me.
12:37But Jeremiah said,
12:39They will not deliver you.
12:41Obey, I beg you,
12:43Yahweh's voice in that which I speak to you.
12:46So it will be well with you
12:49and your soul will live.
12:51But if you refuse to go out,
12:53this is the word that Yahweh has given me.
12:56Behold, all the women who are left
12:59in the king of Judah's house
13:00will be brought out
13:01to the king of Babylon's princes.
13:04And the women will say,
13:05Your familiar friends have turned on you
13:08and have prevailed over you.
13:10Your feet are sunk in the mire.
13:12They have turned away from you.
13:15They will bring out your wives
13:16and your children
13:17and give them to the Chaldeans.
13:20You will not escape out of their hand.
13:24You will be taken by the hand
13:26of the king of Babylon.
13:28You will cause this city
13:29to be burnt with fire.
13:34Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah,
13:36Let no man know of these words
13:38and you will not die.
13:40But if the prince is here
13:41that I have talked with you
13:42and they come to you
13:43and tell you,
13:45Tell us now what you said to the king.
13:47Don't hide it from us
13:49and we will not put you to death.
13:51Also, tell us what the king said to you.
13:54Then you shall tell them,
13:56I presented my supplication
13:57before the king
13:59that he would not cause me
14:00to return to Jonathan's house
14:02to die there.
14:05Then all the princes
14:06came to Jeremiah
14:07and asked him
14:08and he told them
14:10according to the words
14:11that the king had commanded.
14:13And they stopped speaking to him
14:15for the matter was not perceived.
14:18So Jeremiah stayed
14:19in the court of the guard
14:21until the day
14:22that Jerusalem was taken.
14:25This is the word of the Lord.
14:28Thanks be to God.
14:41Mary said
14:42My soul exalts the Lord
14:45and my spirit
14:46has begun to rejoice
14:47in God my Saviour
14:49because he has looked
14:51upon the humble state
14:52of his servant.
14:55For from now on
14:56all generations
14:57will call me blessed
14:59because he who is mighty
15:01has done great things for me
15:03and holy is his name.
15:06From generation to generation
15:08he is merciful
15:10to those who fear him.
15:13He has demonstrated power
15:14with his arm.
15:16He has scattered those
15:17whose pride wells up
15:19from the sheer arrogance
15:20of their hearts.
15:22He has brought down
15:23the mighty from their thrones
15:25and has lifted up
15:26those of lowly position.
15:29He has filled the hungry
15:30with good things
15:31and has sent the rich
15:33away empty.
15:35He has helped
15:36his servant Israel
15:37remembering his mercy
15:39as he promised
15:41to our ancestors
15:42to Abraham
15:44and to his descendants
15:46for ever.
15:48Glory be to the Father
15:49and to the Son
15:50and to the Holy Spirit
15:52as it was in the beginning
15:54is now and ever shall be
15:57world without end.
15:59Amen.
16:06The Gospel according to
16:08St Matthew chapter 27
16:11When evening had come
16:13a rich man from Arimathea
16:14named Joseph
16:15who himself was also
16:17Jesus' disciple
16:19came.
16:20This man went to Pilate
16:22and asked for Jesus' body.
16:25Then Pilate commanded
16:27the body to be given up
16:28and Joseph took the body
16:30wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
16:34and laid it in his own
16:36new tomb
16:37which he had cut out
16:38of the rock
16:40and he rolled a great stone
16:41against the door
16:42of the tomb
16:43and departed.
16:46Mary Magdalene was there
16:48and also the other Mary
16:49sitting opposite the tomb.
16:53Now on the next day
16:54which was the day
16:55after the preparation day
16:57the chief priests
16:57and the Pharisees
16:59gathered together
16:59to Pilate saying
17:00Sir
17:01we remember
17:02what that deceiver
17:04said while he was
17:05still alive
17:06after three days
17:07I will rise again.
17:11Command therefore
17:12that the tomb
17:12be made secure
17:13until the third day
17:14lest perhaps
17:16his disciples
17:17come at night
17:18and steal him away.
17:19Tell the people
17:20he is risen
17:22from the dead
17:22and the last deception
17:24will be worse
17:25than the first.
17:28Pilate said to them
17:30you have a guard
17:31go and make it
17:32as secure as you can.
17:35So they went
17:36with the guard
17:37and made the tomb secure
17:40sealing the stone.
17:43This is the word
17:44of the Lord.
17:46Thanks be to God.
17:59Now according to your word
18:01sovereign Lord
18:02permit your servant
