10:46to become well. The sick man said to him, Sir, I have no one to put me in the water

11:12Immediately the man was healed and he picked up his mat and started walking. Now that day
11:18was a Sabbath. So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, It is the Sabbath
11:26and you are not permitted to carry your mat. But he answered them, The man who made me well
11:33said to me, Pick up your mat and walk. They asked him, Who is the man who said to you,

11:41up your mat and walk? But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus
11:48had
11:48slipped out, since there was a crowd in that place. After this Jesus found him in the temple
11:57and said to him, Look, you have been made well, but do not sin any more, lest anything worse
12:03happen to you. The man went away and informed the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had
12:11made him well. Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders
12:18began persecuting him. And so he told them, My father is working today, and I too am working.
12:28For this reason, the Jewish leaders were trying even harder to kill him, because not only was
12:34he healing on the Sabbath, but he was also calling God his own father, making himself equal
12:41with God. So Jesus answered them, I tell you the solemn truth. The son can do nothing by his
12:51own initiative, but only what he sees the father doing. For whatever the father does, the son
12:57does likewise. For the father loves the son and shows him everything he does, and will show
13:04him greater deeds than these, so that you will be amazed. Just as the father raises the dead
13:10and gives them life, so also the son gives life to whomever he wishes. Furthermore, the
13:17father does not judge anyone, but has assigned all judgment to the son, so that all people
13:23will honour the son, just as they honour the father. The one who does not honour the son does
13:29not honour the father who sent him. I tell you the solemn truth. The one who hears my message
13:37and believes the one who has sent me, has eternal life, and will not be condemned, but has crossed ever
13:45from death to life. A time is coming and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of
13:52the
13:52Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the father has life in himself, so he
13:59has granted
14:00the Son authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. Do not be amazed at this, because
14:12the time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and will come out. The
14:18ones who have
14:19done what is good to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done evil to the resurrection
14:26resulting in condemnation. I can do nothing on my own initiative. Just as I hear, I judge,
14:34and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one who
14:41sent me.
14:43This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
14:57Most surely this man wanted to be healed. And see how quietly the man spoke with Jesus, for there was
15:04no frustration
15:05or bitterness in his voice, just a simple complaint that he had no one to help him get into the
15:11water.
15:14There is no evidence in the account that the man knew that this was Jesus, in fact to the contrary,
15:20nor even if he had heard of Jesus.
15:23It was simply a candid and plaintive statement of fact to another man who showed him compassion.
15:32Interesting though was the reaction of the Jews, for instead of being pleased to see the poor man made well,
15:39they turned hostile,
15:40and believed that it was a sin to cure someone on the Sabbath.
15:47It is of course important to keep the Lord's day special.
15:53It should be a day for reflection, contemplation and the worship of God.
15:59It is also God's intention for us to have a day of rest. It is good for us and it
16:05refreshes both the body and the soul.
16:09This does not mean that work is banned on the Sabbath.
16:13Or how else should we eat or heat our houses, for example?
16:19If we are sick, should we be left to die?
16:23Of course not.
16:24But it is perhaps more a case of, do not do on the Sabbath what does not need to be
16:30done on the Sabbath.
16:34I can remember discussing this with a farmer friend of mine many years ago.
16:41He had a very simple take on this.
16:44He used to feed his animals on the Sabbath, but he would refrain from arable work.
16:50However, under the most exceptional circumstances, he would sow or harvest on the Sabbath, but only if the weather made
16:58it absolutely imperative.
17:02Otherwise the Sabbath was most strictly a day off work.
17:07The point of the Sabbath is that it is a day set aside.
17:12It is a day for not working as in performing your living, but for remembering God and spending time in
17:19prayer.
17:21But it is definitely not forbidden to do good on the Sabbath.
17:27We should review perhaps what it is that we do on the Sabbath, and how about making an end of
17:34doing unnecessary work and spending more time with God than with our families.
17:40It is also worth reflecting for a moment on the words of Jesus as he warned the healed man against
17:47further sin.
17:51Rather than looking for something more sinister, there is perhaps a more simple purpose behind his words.
17:58For in being healed, the man now had the means and the opportunity to commit sins that he had not
18:05been able to commit before.
18:09Being a cripple, he would have found it hard to steal, to commit adultery, to assault or to murder.
18:15But now that he was well, the physical restraints that had been upon him were removed.
18:23We should do well to remember this, as the more we are cured of our sinful state, the easier it
18:30is for us to fall back into sin once again.
18:34For the devil will seek out opportunities to quickly spoil our freshly laundered, baptized state.
18:44We should therefore always be on our guard against sin, but especially after a spiritual high, through prayer, careful study
18:55of the Bible, and through taking the Eucharist at every available opportunity.
19:05Having healed the cripple on the Sabbath, Jesus was called to account for himself by the authorities in the temple
19:12in response to the charges that would have been laid before him for working on the Sabbath.
19:20Jesus quotes the highest possible authority, that his father works on the Sabbath, and that he cannot do anything on
19:29his own, but can only be an extension of what he sees his father doing.
19:36This of course was inflammatory speak for the assembled accusers, for Jesus is elevating his status above them to be
19:45an equal with God, which of course he is, but which they failed to appreciate.
19:54Jesus told the crowd, Jesus told the crowd that he will be their judge, as he has been appointed by
19:59his father to do this.
20:02He then turns around and asks a question, How is it that if we cannot recognise his authority when it
20:11is given by God himself, but we can recognise the authority of those who appoint themselves?
20:19Is it perhaps, because they say and do what we want them to say and do, whereas the words of
20:25Jesus can sometimes be a little uncomfortable in our comfortable lives?
20:31Sometimes it is truly harder to see the trees for the size of the forest.
20:40Jesus attacks the scholars, the doctors of the law, who have failed to recognise him for who he is.
20:48They spend their time with their learning and their book knowledge, but what use is it to them?
20:55When the proverbial push comes to the shove, they were confronted by the truth, and which supposedly they had spent
21:04a lifetime studying, but failed to recognise it.
21:07Worse than that, they simply deny it. Sadly, this is a common human failure.
21:15It seems we have a natural inability to accept the truth when it stirs us in the face.
21:22Once again, we must remember to focus not on complex theories and reasoning, but on the world around him and
21:29on the simple truths of God himself.
21:35In verse 30 Jesus concludes by saying quite clearly that he alone is unable to do anything except by the
21:43will of the Father,
21:44and that whatever he does is pleasing to the Father, because Jesus has no wish to do anything other than
21:51what is pleasing to the Father.
21:54In other words, if they do not like what he says or does, they should perhaps address the matter to
22:00the Father himself.
22:03The real issue is, of course, that the authorities applied the law for their own benefit,
22:08and did not stop to consider what the wish of God himself might have been in these things.
22:15If their application of the law was cruel to those who were suffering, too bad, for the law was the
22:21law, and that was that.
22:24They had forgotten that the law was for the benefit of mankind, and not for its persecution.
22:36Let us pray.
22:38Almighty and everlasting God, who is always more ready to hear than we are to pray,
22:44who is willing to give more than either we desire nor deserve,
22:49pour upon us the abundance of your mercy,
22:52forgive us those things of which our conscience is afraid,
22:57and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask,
23:02but through the merit and mediation of Jesus Christ,
23:05your Son, our Lord. Amen.
