16:48The angel here appealed.
16:50To the senses of those who stood about the tomb.
16:52To attest the truth.
16:53Of Christ's resurrection from the dead.
16:58The empty tomb at once proclaimed.
17:01The actual resurrection of the Saviour.
17:05The resurrection is proclaimed to be a fact.
17:09Firstly by the testimony of human witnesses.
17:13The disciples were men of property.
17:15And had no worldly advantage.
17:17To acquire from the publication of such a circumstance.
17:20Indeed quite the opposite.
17:23They had known Christ surely long enough.
17:25To recognize him again when he appeared amongst them.
17:29And with one concurrent voice they testified.
17:32He is risen from the dead.
17:36Secondly.
17:37We have the testimony of the angels.
17:40And by their various appearances as bearers of the news.
17:45Thirdly.
17:46The resurrection of Christ was not denied even by his enemies.
17:49But was covertly recognized and admitted.
17:52Even while the Jews agreed to a traditional falsehood.
17:56To conceal from their posterity that which they knew to be a fact.
18:02Fourthly.
18:03The apostles constantly attested to the fact.
18:06As did the fathers of the primitive Christian church.
18:09Such as Ignatius and Polycar.
18:11And the other venerable custodians of the truth.
18:17Finally Christ rose likewise.
18:19In precise accordance with the scripture.
18:22And with the same body as that in which he had lived and died.
18:29The language of the text expresses the great humiliation of Jesus Christ.
18:34Come.
18:35See the place where the Lord lay.
18:39We cannot meditate beside the place where the Lord lay.
18:43Without learning something of the infinite love of God.
18:50Neither can we look upon the empty tomb.
18:52Without being convinced of the divine faithfulness.

19:03This visit to the place where the Lord lay.
19:06Must bring with it too.
19:07A striking evidence of his divine sovereignty.
19:11I have the power to lay down my life.
19:14And I have the power to take it back again.
19:18And if thus he held in his sovereign hand the issues.
19:21And the destinies of his own career.
19:24He can in like manner.
19:26Overrule and control the destinies of his people.
19:33Is not this vacant tomb.
19:35An almost satirical evidence of his triumph.
19:37Over his enemies and ours.
19:42Come and see the place where the Lord lay.
19:45That you may behold in it.
19:47The certain and the glorious pledge.
19:50Of a perfected salvation.
19:55The angel told the women to have no fear.
19:58For they were searching for Jesus.
20:03Quite apart from any other aspects of today's reading.
20:06This statement contains a great promise.
20:11For if we too are genuinely in search of Jesus.
20:14Then we too have nothing to fear.
20:17For we are well on the way to our own salvation.
20:22For those of us who are still searching.
20:24This gives us the confidence to continue our search.
20:27And to find.
20:29Claiming our reward in heaven in the process.
20:34Let us search on in confidence.
20:36Let us search on in confidence.
20:37That we too may find every choice.
20:44The question meets us today.
20:46As we think of the narrative of the text.
20:50How do we stand related to that assembly.
20:52On the Galilean mountain.
20:55And to that last command of our adored Lord.
21:00The answer which I trust.
21:02We shall all feel inclined to give.
21:04Is this.
21:05That we are related to that assembly.
21:07Just as though we had formed part of it originally.
21:11To that last command.
21:13As though we had heard it in audible words.
21:16From the lips of our Lord.
21:19That we may be confirmed in this conviction.
21:22Let us ask and answer some further questions.
21:27Is the need of the world any greater or less now.
21:30Than it was then.
21:33Substantially it is the same.
21:35It was great and most urgent then.
21:38And it is great and most urgent now.
21:42Go therefore.
21:44Into the busy world immediately around you.
21:47And into the wider world beyond.
21:48With the good news of God.
21:51Tell men.
21:52That God loves them.
21:53That Christ is able to save for the uttermost.
21:55All that come unto God by him.
21:59Such is the great commission.
22:01The most important effort entrusted to men.
22:05Note its universality.
22:08Its intellectual character and its gentleness.
22:14Are the encouragements given to those.
22:16Who put themselves instantly in a way of obedience.
22:18With this last command.
22:20In any manner or degree less than they were at first.
22:24Or through the primitive ages.
22:28Christ's assertions regarding his power in presence.
22:31Were immediately put to the proof by his followers.
22:35And in no long time.
22:36They were able to point rejoicingly.
22:38Through certain definite results.
22:41Not only in the inward experience.
22:43But in the lives and characters of men.
22:48The most marvellous changes took place.
22:50Such as had never been obtained.
22:52Than any other teaching or influence whatsoever.
22:57In a state of society like our own.
23:00Which has long been under more or less.
23:02Of the general Christian culture.
23:04We cannot expect to see many changes.
23:07So physically striking as those of early times.
23:11But those of us who will look below the surface of things.
23:14Will see that changes the same in essence.
23:17Are being produced all of us.
23:19And that the same sanctifying grace.
23:21Is still at work.
23:24When men and women go forth.
23:26And teach the true gospel.
23:27In the spirit of love and loyalty.
23:29The Lord works with them.
23:32And confirms the word.
23:33By signs for them.
23:36It is a great work.
23:37So great that no other can be likened to it.
23:41All other good works are only parts of it.
23:45It will be a long and hard work.
23:47But it will be done.
23:50As surely as God is the Father.
23:53And Jesus Christ the Son.
23:55There will be glory to God in the highest.
23:59On earth peace and good will towards men.
24:04In a manner of speaking we are all priests.
24:07But we all have a duty to tell others the gospel.
24:11And Jesus tells us to go out and spread the word.
24:13And to be assured that he will be with us always.
24:20Moses told the people of Israel.
24:22About the prophets that God would call to lead his people.
24:26These people will speak the word of God.
24:28And those who hear and do not believe will be condemned.
24:32However it will be much worse for the false prophets.
24:37We are not called to be prophets.
24:39But we all have been called.
24:41To share the gospel with others.
24:45Both directly.
24:46And by example.
24:48In the way we live our daily lives.
