00:00Uh, so you got rubbed the wrong way by an AD.
00:03Well, I saw this tweet.
00:05I didn't mean it like that, but like the tweet that rubbed the wrong way.
00:07It does, and it's a tweet from the athletic director at the University of Kansas.
00:11And they show a picture.
00:14They're building the other side of the stadium right now.
00:16Oh, okay.
00:17Right?
00:17Yeah, the other side.
00:18If you build it, they will come.
00:19Allegedly, yes.
00:20Okay.
00:20Yeah, the other side of the stadium is getting built in Lawrence.
00:22And this is what the tweet says.
00:24And you guys tell me if I'm reading too much into this, because you know where I am with college
00:29athletics right now.
00:30I want to see all of these universities fail miserably because they've been screwing the athletes for 55, 60 years.
00:36Right?
00:36So here's the tweet.
00:37It says a construction photo, a perfect depiction of where our department and industry stand.
00:44Will we do it right?
00:46Maximize the opportunity that's ahead to be our best version.
00:49Need our supporters to continue stepping up.
00:52Need my team and university community to strive for more.
00:55Let's be all in.
00:57That sounded to me like almost a cry for help, but also like one of those college athletics, man, sucks
01:05right now.
01:05We need money.
01:07Otherwise, we're screwed.
01:08And if you don't step up, it ain't my fault.
01:10It's your fault.
01:11Like how I read that tweet was like, we got some issues going on in Lawrence.
01:16And the athletic directors out here going like one last plea.
01:19Can somebody give us some money?
01:21We can't sustain this.
01:22How is this going to be sustainable, guys, in college athletics moving forward?
01:26We're out here basically on X now begging our donors to give us money.
01:30How can this be sustainable?
01:33I just don't understand throughout college athletics how something like this that we're living in right now is going to
01:39be sustainable even for these power for schools at this point in time.
01:44It's awful.
01:47Yeah, I just I'm trying to think like I I know who I feel like I know who the biggest
01:52donor is for Mizzou.
01:54Mizzou, obviously, right?
01:57It's Cronky staying.
02:00Do they have that at KU?
02:01They have somebody like that at KU?
02:02Well, yeah, they've got guys like that.
02:04I was going to say, but like because when Mizzou got the 60 million randomly donated to their athletic department,
02:10it was like, hmm, I wonder who that was.
02:12But like I just I've the whole I'm going back on your stadium conversation.
02:16I went that way.
02:18Like that whole thing's been kind of confusing to me.
02:20The stadium.
02:21Why start when you don't know if you can finish?
02:24And like you do the east side, but not the west side.
02:26And then you're like, well, we'll get there.
02:27It's like, why would you do like you?
02:29I think a lot of it had to do with like making sure you have a place to play.
02:33You know, you don't want to play an arrowhead and all that kind of stuff.
02:35Maybe, but also, no, it was a fundraising thing because I'm going to build my dream house.
02:39Right.
02:39But I'm not going to have the backside of it done.
02:41That's right.
02:41Yeah.
02:42No, my wife gets her promotion.
02:44But this stadium stuff, Dusty, has been talked about for generations in Lawrence.
02:48They had like some touchdown club they tried to raise.
02:50They've been trying to rebuild the stadium since I was a student at KU in 1995.
02:54So this has been going on 30 plus years.
02:57But this this seemed like a kind of almost a negative tone cry for help.
03:02Like, we can't finish our stadium unless you step up and do it.
03:06And to me, it's like, well, didn't you get $300 million a year ago?
03:11Yeah.
03:11Somebody just said that text.
03:12I forgot about that.
03:14Like that.
03:14Isn't that OK?
03:15That's true.
03:15Yeah.
03:15Yeah.
03:16David Booth.
03:16They're in the text.
03:17Yeah.
03:17David Booth gave $300 million a year ago.
03:19Right.
03:19Yeah.
03:20Now, I know we're talking hundred millions.
03:22We're talking chump change for a lot of these programs.
03:24But come on.
03:25That went to Darren Peterson and Tyron Stokes.
03:28But there it is, though.
03:29I mean, those are the things now.
03:31You need to build a stadium.
03:32You also need to pay players to come to your university.
03:35And so, like, it's really it's a crazy balancing act.
03:38And I'm sure that everybody who's who's been in college athletics that has since retired and
03:42they're running like rats off a sinking ship.
03:45They're probably very happy they're not having to deal with this because, again, the way that
03:49I read that tweet was like, that's a desperate tweet right there.
03:52And if KU's in desperate times, which they are, 15 million in the red, how many other universities are and
03:59how long are we going to see what we're seeing in college athletics continue and how long can we sustain
04:05what we're watching in college athletics?
04:06There's a lot of people who are currently at UConn that said you need at least 12 to 15 million
04:10to be competitive in college basketball.
04:11I think it was then.
04:12Yeah.
04:13And I think that was the number, at least the window, is like 13 to 15, I think is what
04:16he said, to be competitive.
04:18Yeah.
04:18Be competitive.
04:18To give yourself a chance.
04:20That's basketball.
04:21Right.
04:21And again, God knows what football is.
04:22Like, and you look at KU's basketball situation, they've got a label, they can't sell anything else.
04:28I mean, there's not a spot on the floor that they can maximize anymore.
04:31They are tapped when it comes to maximizing that basketball program.
04:35But yeah, with the donors and people funneling these things, like now we're looking at a place at KU that
04:41maybe not be able to complete the stadium.
04:44I don't know.
04:44Like, it's just a weird spot for college athletics right now.
04:47And it's a hard industry because you're basically operating like a nonprofit.
04:53You're asking people to donate money.
04:55And if they decide they're not going to donate, if the economy turns, that affects everything that you're doing as
05:01well.
05:01And now you're so out over your skis in college athletics with the amount of money.
05:05I mean, again, I just don't know how sustainable this is.
05:09Yesterday was Josh Allen's birthday, right?
05:1130 years old.
05:1230 years old.
05:12Yeah.
05:12So somebody found his patched one-of-one autograph card that Tops came out with.
05:18The bidding started yesterday.
05:20It's currently – I hate life sometimes.
05:23It's currently – the bid ends tonight.
05:26It's currently – it started at $420,000.
05:30Oh, my God!
05:31Damn!
05:32It started at $420,000.
05:34Well, I don't know if it started, but the current bid right now is at $420,000.
05:38They said, where do you think it ends?
05:40Oh, my God.
05:40Just imagine you're strolling down aisle six in Target.
05:44You convince your mom, let's buy a blaster pack of cards.
05:48Not the likelihood that it's going to be in there.
05:50All of a sudden, you're going through it.
05:51Oh.
05:52Oh, oh.
05:53What do we do?
05:54Son, give me –
05:55Yeah.
05:56Hey, David Booth, here's $10,000 I just made up Josh Allen.
05:59Build my stadium.
06:01Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
06:02Ha, ha, ha, ha.
