00:00oh let me give you some information so this is from my dear friend over at spot track i'm sure
00:07we'll have mike genetti on at some point over the course of the next couple of weeks or so
00:12earlier today the chiefs converted 9.6 million dollars of george carloftis's salary into signing
00:20bonus which creates 7.7 million dollars of cap space i guess the best way that i could describe
00:29this is in a very simplistic way is let's say you make a hundred thousand dollars a year
00:35and your company's fiscal year is in august so what nfl teams will do is instead of paying you
00:45your weekly salary you know every tuesday after every game they'll just pay some of it right now
00:52before the fiscal year starts so next year when their books you just count for a different number
00:57against the cap this is just the chiefs way of manipulating the cap the same way that the eagles
01:04do where the eagles create a lot of void years at the end of their deal to kind of keep
01:08these numbers
01:09low the chiefs usually take players they don't plan on cutting and they just pay them somewhat up front
01:15in order to just keep the book straight so they're not cutting george carloftis anytime soon so they
01:21have just simply converted some of his money from weekly salary into right now we're just going to
01:28write you a check for 9.6 million dollars which creates some cap space now i think there is a
01:34lot
01:35of question on what are the chiefs planning on doing with this cap space it is important to note the
01:40chiefs have not signed monsoor delane to a deal they also haven't signed peter woods to a deal so the
01:46chiefs needed this money now shout out to truman chief his name is jared sap he writes for arrowhead
01:53addict or probably excuse me shout out to him so he did the numbers and after the chiefs do the
02:00monsoor delane move after they sign peter woods to a deal the chiefs are going to have about four and
02:05a half million dollars in cap space available now i don't think that's enough cap space to go out and
02:11make a significant move in free agency the question now is do you want them to clear up a little
02:18bit
02:18of cap space in order to do it because i can tell you guys the trick of how they can
02:23do it they can
02:25ask chris jones to move some money around now if you want to ask chris jones to move some money
02:30around
02:30i'm sure he would not have a problem with it i don't know a lot of people that will have
02:34a problem
02:35just getting their money in a big lump sum right now they can do with it what they want but
02:40it always
02:41comes at a cost the chiefs can move on from chris jones at the end of this season if they
02:46want to
02:47if you are going to do that i'm assuming he also wants to create a scenario in which
02:52you can't cut him at the end of the season so let's say that the chiefs are tired of chris
02:58jones
02:59let's say you're tired of chris jones you're tired of the inconsistencies you're tired of what
03:05happened in the jacksonville game he's getting up there he's long in the tooth you're ready to move on
03:11well if the chiefs cut chris jones at the end of the season they will save 19 million dollars that's
03:17a pretty substantial amount of savings if you want to move on i mean that can go get you a
03:22kenneth walker
03:23that could go get you a prime time wide receiver if you want one 20 million dollars in caps pays
03:28you
03:28could really make a lot of things shake if you want to end up doing it i am not creating
03:33a scenario if
03:34i'm chris jones in which i'm helping you out the organization while simultaneously expediting
03:40your ability to get rid of me at the end of the season this is kind of what got them
03:45in the juwan
03:46taylor business for as long as they wanted to everybody wanted to go get deandre hopkins you want
03:52to know how they got deandre hopkins they had to sign up for another year juwan taylor
03:56they had to move some juwan taylor money around and that created the cap space to go get deandre
04:01hopkins which at the time everybody was in favor of but the cap is the cap you can only manipulate
04:07it
04:07so much eventually the bill becomes due so the question is if you want to go make a move and
04:14i'm on the
04:14side of making a move i'm on the side of going to get a cam jordan rob you're on the
04:18side with going
04:19to get a stefan diggs you're on the side of going to go get a keenan allen type you are
04:23not getting
04:23those guys with four million dollars in cap space you're gonna have to take that money from
04:28somewhere in order to do it you've already done that with patrick mahomes you have just done that
04:34with george carloftis you don't have a whole lot of players left to do this with chris jones is a
04:40very obvious one but you were gonna have to lock him in for 2027 do you think the juice is
04:45worth the
04:46squeeze no i do not not even a little bit i think i'm hoping i don't think i'm hoping brett
04:53the same way i do because we can disagree on wide receiver we can disagree on how he's handled
05:00running back we can disagree on a lot of things me and brett for this offseason one thing that i've
05:04noticed that i actually agree with is his game plan for the defense younger faster more explosive
05:10he has done that basically at all three levels this offseason he has said it's jeffrey bossa time
05:17with his moves he has added peter woods to the d-line he has added r mason thomas to the
05:23d-line
05:24he has added basically an entire new secondary to the team younger faster more explosive chris jones
05:30does not fit in that mold and that's not chris jones fault he might go to coop not cooperstown
05:35canton one day excuse me but he's not getting younger so i'm not signing up for chris jones in
05:412027 at a position that doesn't age gracefully just to try to add a stefan diggs in 2026 i'm not
05:49willing this is the analogy i use all the time on this show i'm not willing to pay the credit
05:53card
05:53bill in a year of chris jones being out there at 35 playing defensive tackle just to get one year
06:00of
06:01you know debo samuel so i'm a no on maneuvering chris jones money around to create open space
06:07even though i'm a personal once wide receiver chris jones not the contract i'm touching i mean
06:12the only other two possible contracts that you could do this with if you really want to do it
06:18is you could do this with creed humphrey and trey smith i mean outside of that there's really
06:24nobody else's deal to be able to do this with they don't have a lot of big time contracts on
06:30their team
06:30you're not doing it with mahomes again you've already done it with patrick mahomes can you do a
06:34bolton i don't know how his contract is structured i can look it up here really quickly
06:37you're not just got extension walker just got here you're not you can maybe do that the end
06:41of the season you are not restructuring the deal that hasn't even started yet and he paid him yet
06:47other than the guaranteed money yeah there's not that many guys left that you could maneuver the
06:53money with in order to do it now you're right they could end up doing it with nick bolton but
06:58that would also be another player where you could potentially cut or move on from that player at the
07:05end of the season and you'd be locking that player into another year so i know everybody's
07:10happy nick bolton got paid the chiefs can cut nick bolton at the end of the season we haven't even
07:15talked enough about this but the royals are terrible so we got nothing but free time to do it next
07:19season
07:20nick bolton's cap hit is 9.2 million dollars his dead cap is 4.2 million dollars the chiefs will
07:26save
07:2615 million dollars if they move on from nick bolton at the end of this season
07:3115 million dollars i don't think they're just outright cutting nick bolton out at 27 years old
07:36but he'd be a prime person to get another extension and continue to keep that cap number lowered so i
07:41actually don't know if i would i don't know if i would restructure nick bolton i will let this year
07:46play itself out and then if you like him lock him up for the rest of his 30s and move
07:51on that way
07:51trey smith is just i mean i would say they're already in pretty deep with the trey smith contract
07:58base salary this year is 9.7 million dollars next year base salary is three uh 23.2 million dollars
08:05they already gave him 70 million dollars guaranteed like they're just gonna keep throwing guaranteed
08:10money at trey smith they're gonna keep throwing guaranteed money at right guard they've already
08:16guaranteed 70 million of it how much of this contract are they willing to guarantee for trey smith
08:20that i keep forgetting goodness great i keep forgetting what his contract's like
08:26but those are the names i'm not saying a proponent of bolton smith or humphrey getting
08:31the restructure but those are the names because they're the only players in the team that are young
08:34outside of carloftis like the reason you don't restructure jones is because of his age you could
08:40feasibly restructure kelsey but you're not restructuring kelsey to keep him at 38 i'm not
08:46interested in restructuring a deal that we just signed someone on the text line says butker
08:51butker is another contract in theory i think you could do but that's also what did you want
08:54do you want has to be on the team in 2027 these are the questions i wouldn't do anything that
08:59would
08:59lock harrison bucker in for 2027 i want to see how this year plays itself out and give ourselves the
09:04option of if we want to move on or not the chiefs can't move on from harrison bucker right now
09:08they
09:08can move in on move on at the end of the season his cap it would be 7.2 million
09:13dollars his dead cap
09:14will be 2.8 million dollars so they can save about four and a half million dollars if they want
09:19to move
09:20on from harrison bucker which could certainly get you a potentially better kicker at a
09:25significantly reduced price there's some guys on the team that yes there is some wiggle room to
09:31restructure i would just want to keep the flexibility on some of these aging contracts
09:36and not continue to be in the harrison bucker business if we don't want to be or the chris jones
09:42business i think that creed humphrey is probably the most likely player if you want to restructure
09:46one more guy he is 27 years old you are not releasing him he makes a pretty reasonable amount
09:53of money i think creed humphrey is probably the player where tomorrow if you were trying to go
09:58get cam jordan if you're trying to get tyree kill where are you going to pull the money from to
10:03potentially grab somebody as a free agent i think creed humphrey is probably the most realistic player
10:08we're now we're a little bit into this contract that he signed for four for 72 that's probably the most
10:14likely one he's the he's the only real candidate because he's a player where if you're just heaping
10:19him i forget what his last year if you keep him an extra one year it's not the world's worst
10:24deal
10:24and of the positions center is usually the cheapest of the ones we've mentioned but this is for people
10:31who say the salary cap isn't real this is when the bill comes due you can keep maneuvering and
10:35restructuring but just means players as they get older and less valuable are stuck on the team on big
10:40contracts which would happen last year with juwan taylor verbatim so let's do this let's step aside
10:45here we'll come back on the other side i will give you the list of about the four or five
10:50players
10:51it is unrealistic to me to think that all of these guys are coming back in 2027 they just saved
10:55too much
10:56cap space by moving on from one or two of these guys rob let's go through who you think the
11:01most
11:02likely candidate is for this is their last year on the team and i'm not talking about kelsey who's just
11:07on a one-year deal i'm talking about there are some guys who the chiefs have recently sunk some
11:12big contracts into that we all know how the nfl is everybody doesn't make it to the end of their
11:17deal you either move on from them and they become a cap casualty or you'll get out of that contract
11:23now
11:23and you'll take the draft pick kind of like what they just did with trent mcduffie so we'll do that
11:27next
11:28let's keep it
