01 May - National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Hello, the long weekend is almost here, the first three-day weekend of the year.
00:05The devil will be in the detail with our weather.
00:08Unfortunately, the details are proving to be rather devilish to pin down.
00:13The view from space shows a messy, cloudy zone across western parts of the UK.
00:19Area of high pressure sitting to the east, that's what brought many of us plenty of sunshine through this week,
00:23and a big area of high pressure way out to the west.
00:26But this low will be reinforced by another low, and that's what will bring some fairly heavy showers through the
00:33course of the long weekend.
00:34But it won't rain all weekend far from it, as I said, the devil in the detail.
00:38That first low in this line of cloud in particular already providing some showers for southwest Scotland, Wales, western parts
00:44of England.
00:45We could see one or two heavy, even thundery downpours breaking out over parts of the Cotswolds,
00:50drifting up towards the Midlands as we go through this afternoon.
00:53But much of eastern England, much of eastern Scotland staying dry, still under the influence of that high pressure.
00:59As it's moved away, though, we've lost that cold easterly wind, or that brisk easterly wind anyway,
01:04which means it's quite a bit warmer on the east coast in particular.
01:08And even further west, although it's not gloriously sunny here,
01:12we should see skies brightening for southwest England, south Wales, and northern Ireland.
01:16Generally dry and fine here.
01:17I'm feeling more humid here, actually, even though temperatures are low.
01:21But it's in the east where we'll see the peak values.
01:22We could easily see a 26 in one or two places today, say, from London up towards Cambridgeshire.
01:29And, say, much of the east coast feeling quite a bit warmer because we've lost that brisk wind.
01:34Still a noticeable breeze bringing some cloud into eastern Scotland.
01:38A few showers drifting in across the eastern side of Scotland through the evening.
01:42One or two heavy downpours over northeast England for a time before they all scoot out into the North Sea.
01:46In many places, we'll become dry overnight.
01:49Quite cloudy skies, not great for viewing the full moon.
01:52Could be quite a misty, murky start to Saturday as well because temperatures won't be dropping too far.
01:57A much warmer night than many we've had so far through this week.
02:01Some towns and cities start the long weekend in double digits.
02:04But we do start with quite a bit of cloud.
02:06Now, for much of England and Wales, I suspect most of Saturday will be dry.
02:10We are going to see some showery rain in northern Scotland.
02:12And the showery rain here and across Northern Ireland becoming more widespread as we head into the late morning and
02:18through the afternoon.
02:19So, showers likely here.
02:20One or two for West Wales.
02:21And then later in the day, through the middle part of the afternoon, the threat of some heavy downpours coming
02:27up across southern counties of England.
02:29But apart from that, as I said, a good part of England and Wales looking dry and quite bright.
02:33Across the east, we'll see some hazy sunshine again here.
02:36And again, it's where we'll see the top temperatures.
02:38Not as warm as today, but still 21, maybe 22 degrees Celsius.
02:43Turning a bit cooler with that northerly wind across Shetland.
02:46Temperatures only in single figures here.
02:48And more showers pushing south across Scotland and Northern Ireland into Saturday evening.
02:52At the same time, that zone of rain in the south really blossoms.
02:54So, Saturday evening could see some really heavy downpours over parts of the Midlands, South Wales and southern counties of
03:02England.
03:02All thanks to a little area of low pressure, as I said, reinforcing the one that's already here.
03:07And that will bring quite a wet spell as it tracks northwards.
03:11A bit of uncertainty about timing and particularly how quickly it clears away.
03:15But it could be quite a wet morning across these eastern counties of England.
03:18And with the breeze coming in back from the North Sea, very different feel to proceedings here too.
03:24And it may take much of the day before that rain clears from the eastern counties of England.
03:29A few showers for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
03:31But again, here quite a bit of dry and bright weather, as there should be for Wales.
03:34The risk of some heavy showers returning to parts of the south and even the odd thunderstorm possible here on
03:39Sunday afternoon.
03:40As I mentioned, much cooler in the eastern side of England and eastern Scotland, only 12, say, in Edinburgh compared
03:48to Saturday.
03:48But in the south, if it brightens up, we could again get close to 20 Celsius.
03:52But that cooling trend likely to continue into the weekend.
03:55This map is showing the difference on Sunday's temperatures compared to Saturday.
03:59So, quite a bit cooler across those eastern counties of both England and Scotland.
04:04And a cooler, fresher feel for many into Monday.
04:07Also, quite a bit of cloud around, but not too many showers.
04:10Overall, Monday looks like, for many of us, being the driest day, certainly between Sunday and Monday.
