15 May - National Morning Forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Morning. Chilly ends to a pretty fresh feeling week. A bit more sunshine today and not as many showers around.
00:07The bigger picture tells the story quite nicely. Low pressure sitting to the east of us and this low is
00:13drawing down the cold air really from northern parts of Scandinavia.
00:18Drifting down across the UK. That's what's bringing the fresher feel but the isobars are opening up.
00:23The winds won't be as strong as recent days and because the low pressure's a little further away and high
00:28pressure is trying to topple in, there won't be as many showers around today either.
00:33Still a few, particularly if you're exposed to that northerly wind. So the east coast of England, northern parts of
00:38Scotland and some showers on the west coast of Wales.
00:41Even in land across Wales, some showers likely this morning affecting parts of the Midlands too.
00:46And then into southern England, a sprinkling of showers possible this afternoon.
00:49Showers on and off for Northern Ireland also, but even if you catch a downpour, still good to get outside
00:54today and enjoy that fresh, really clean air.
00:58Plenty of sunny spells as well between the showers, more so than recent days.
01:02So although yes, the air is still pretty chilly and temperatures aren't going to be anything special, still generally below
01:09average for the time of year.
01:10Because the winds are lighter and because there's a bit more sunshine, it'll probably feel a little bit warmer at
01:15least compared to the past couple of days.
01:18It will turn quite fresh though this evening. If you are heading out on Friday evening, still some showers likely,
01:23particularly across the southeast.
01:25So some spray surface water on the roads here and a few more showers developing as we go through the
01:30night, pushing into parts of Wales, northern and then eastern England.
01:33And we'll keep the showers and that northerly breeze going across northeast Scotland all through the night.
01:38In the west, we'll see more cloud moving in.
01:41And that's going to bring some patchy rain to Northern Ireland, perhaps Pembrokeshire and Cornwall by Saturday morning.
01:48Ahead of that, as the winds fall even lighter and we get clear skies and still in the cold air,
01:53just that hint of blue on the chart there across Scotland, northern England, suggesting there may well be a frost.
01:59Now, towns and cities may well hold up, but in rural areas, even across southern England, temperatures are going to
02:04be not far of freezing to start Saturday.
02:06So something for gardeners to be aware of. A frosty start for some. Temperatures could be as low as minus
02:12two or minus three.
02:13Not as cold further west because we'll have that cloud starting to move in and that will shape the day
02:19across these western areas.
02:20So clouding over in western parts of Wales and Scotland down to southwest England.
02:25A bit more cloud coming in. The rain fairly light and patchy, but it could be quite a damp day
02:29in Northern Ireland.
02:30Ahead of that, the odd shower for the Midlands and eastern England, but a good part of England and much
02:36of central and eastern Scotland will stay dry and bright throughout the day.
02:40Perhaps that rain just edging more into Wales and western Scotland by the end of the day.
02:46By this stage, the winds are starting to change direction.
02:49There'll be light as well. So we'll still have some chilly air in place.
02:53It's going to take a while from that cold start to temperatures for temperatures to rise, but they should generally
02:58be a little bit higher by Saturday afternoon compared to many days through this week.
03:03Milder still on Sunday.
03:05For more details on that, you'll want to watch Claire Nazir's full weekend video that is available on our YouTube
03:12channel.
