00:00Well, have you done the requisite work on our next guest
00:02appearing on the Make It Right Call Kyle Wright hotline?
00:06We're going to be excited if and when we get to hear the voice
00:10of the local, all-American local, because he starred at John Carroll,
00:14Ty Montgomery, who his story has been profiled on ESPN.
00:21It was a great piece.
00:22I tweeted it out yesterday.
00:23And are you enjoying all the buzz and hearing your name
00:27and all the pub you've been getting as Ty joins us on the show?
00:30What's up, Ty?
00:31What's up, y'all?
00:32How y'all doing?
00:33It's a pretty amazing story.
00:35Somebody who started out playing basketball.
00:37You were a walk-on at LSU.
00:39You had some personal tragedy.
00:41You went back home.
00:43And now you're someone who could get drafted by an NFL football team.
00:47It all has to just be amazing for you right now.
00:51Yeah, it feel good.
00:52You know, this is in my mom's vision.
00:56This is what I've been manifesting for the past few years.
00:58So, it feels good to, you know, have this reality be right in front of me.
01:03I hate to sound naive or not.
01:07How much did you play high school football before all this?
01:11No, I didn't play at all.
01:13I played basketball.
01:14So, what made you want to play football, Ty?
01:17So, after I came home from LSU, you know, it was around the COVID time and everything got shut down.
01:25So, once I came home to take care of my mom, I couldn't play basketball at all because there was
01:30no more opportunities for me.
01:31So, one day, me and my brother, we were just in the backyard.
01:34My brother actually plays football.
01:36He's a quarterback for North Greenville University, 6'5", 220.
01:41So, he was just in the backyard.
01:43He was just throwing the football around.
01:44And my brother asked me to run some routes for him.
01:47He kind of showed me how to run certain routes.
01:49And I could easily pick up on it.
01:51So, after that point, I kind of just knew, like, maybe this is what I need to be doing in
01:56life.
01:56And I just stuck with it.
01:57And here we are.
01:58So, how did you end up at John Carroll?
02:01So, I was at Nichols State University from 2022 to 2023.
02:07And then I ended up finding out I had no more D1 eligibility.
02:10So, then I entered the transfer portal.
02:13Once I entered the transfer portal, there was a guy named Eddie Franke out of Miami, Florida.
02:19He knew Coach Behrman.
02:21And he just connected me with Coach Behrman.
02:23And then that's how I ended up getting to John Carroll.
02:25But some of your journey included flag football, right?
02:28And watching YouTube videos and trying to learn the game that way.
02:32Which is obviously very different the way today.
02:34We have kids in camp.
02:36We've got, I mean, Kenny's in football meetings.
02:38It seems like every day going over this stuff.
02:40And, you know, in today's day and age, players are just expected to be 24-7 their sport.
02:47You did it a very, very different way.
02:50Yeah, I had to do, I had to go to flag football route because I didn't get, I mean, I
02:57didn't have any football film in high school.
02:59So, I know I needed to do something to put me on the football, college football world map.
03:05So, once I got into flag football, I formed up a highlight tape.
03:10And it got sent around to a bunch of coaches.
03:12And at first, coaches were all interested in me, but they were scared to take the chance for me because
03:16I never put on shoulder pads a day in my life.
03:19So, I ended up, my tape ended up getting the nickels.
03:22And they said, you know what, look, we'll take them.
03:24And then that's when it started.
03:25Well, you were, we're talking to Ty Montgomery, John Carroll, All-American.
03:30I got a chance to do his game.
03:32They were in the National Championship semifinal this past year.
03:36Just an incredible journey.
03:38And you were spectacular all season long.
03:40But then you get the invite to the Senior Bowl.
03:42What was that like?
03:43Because you were making waves all over social media.
03:45We had some of the biggest draft pundits there are in the country talking about you.
03:50Did your phone blow up?
03:51I mean, how did you feel when you started getting that publicity?
03:54Yeah, my phone was blowing up.
03:56I had to, whenever I would log on to Instagram during the Senior Bowl, whenever everything was blowing up, my
04:01phone would keep glitching.
04:02I couldn't get on the app because, like, I was getting so many followers.
04:06So, I just kind of had to, like, sit my phone down.
04:09And, you know, at the same time, so I didn't want to be getting on my phone while I was
04:12at the Senior Bowl.
04:13Like, I still had, you know, work to be done.
04:16But, I mean, it felt good.
04:17Like, at the aftermath, like, once I got home and ready to sit down and process everything that had happened,
04:21and it just, it felt good that, you know, I was able to go out there and show the scouts
04:25that, you know,
04:26I could play football.
04:27Granted, I'm a D3 player, but it didn't mean anything at the end of the day.
04:30Well, you mentioned a D3 player, and there are some famous dudes that have come out of Division III.
04:36Have you gotten a chance to kind of look into those stories and, you know,
04:40see how tough maybe it was for them to get acclimated?
04:43Or are you just kind of focused on your situation and your spot?
04:47I have talked to Cecil Short.
04:50You know, Cecil Short played at Mount Union.
04:52I forgot what year it was, but he got drafted in the fourth round.
04:55So, me and him, we got to chop it up a couple weeks ago.
05:00You know, just kind of compare stories.
05:03I mean, other than that, I've been kind of really just focused on myself.
05:06So, for me, it's all new.
05:07It's just a lot coming at me, you know, just trying to stay grounded at the end of the day.
05:12What have you liked about Cleveland, being here, going to school here over the last couple years?
05:19I think the people.
05:21I really enjoy the people.
05:23I like the environment.
05:25The one thing that's new for me is the weather.
05:28You know, the weather is kind of ridiculous sometimes, you know,
05:32outside practicing in four-degree weather.
05:34But, I mean, other than that, I like the environment.
05:36I like the people.
05:36I like the energy I get whenever I'm out there.
05:40And then, most importantly, my school and football.
05:42So, yeah.
05:44What would it mean to you if you were drafted by the Browns this coming weekend?
05:50It would mean a lot.
05:51You know, that would be great, you know, to have quarterback Drew Sanders throwing me the ball.
05:57It would be nice.
05:58I mean, I'd be coming back to Cleveland.
06:00I mean, I was just there a few months ago.
06:02So, it would be a familiar territory for sure.
06:04Have you – I don't know how much you can actually tell us,
06:08but the conversations you've been having with NFL teams, how has that been?
06:12What kind of process has that been like for you?
06:15Because, like I said, these kids, a lot of them, especially the first-rounders,
06:19they've been groomed for this their entire lives.
06:22For you, this is all kind of new.
06:25So, what has that been like, getting a chance to talk to the NFL teams,
06:28and what have they been asking you?
06:30It's been good.
06:32I mean, a lot of teams, you know, they ask me to – they ask me more in my story,
06:37and then they ask me, like, how did I pick up on football so fast?
06:41I mean, I just kind of tell them, you know, just YouTube and just being with my brother for real
06:46and playing Madden.
06:47Madden has helped me a lot as far as in, like, reading coverages and stuff like that.
06:50So, I mean, it's obviously new and it's different, but, you know,
06:54I feel like life is about adjustments and adapting.
06:56So, I've just been adapting to, you know, what I got to do.
06:59What do the teams say to you when you tell them how you learn the game?
07:03This is very unorthodox and obviously not how we do things here in America
07:08when it comes to, you know, football and getting kids along that pathway
07:13to have a chance like you have right now.
07:16Yeah, they're all shocked.
07:18I mean, because, you know, even whenever I say my story out loud, it's not normal.
07:24So, I mean, for them, it's just – yeah, they're more shocked than anything.
07:28I feel like there's no other word I could really use.
07:32Yeah, that's really it.
07:34Ty Montgomery joining us on the show.
07:36John Carroll, wide receiver.
07:37You're a sports information director.
07:39He seemed a little bit hesitant to give your number away.
07:43Is that because of the pranking that's gone on over the last few years
07:47during the draft process?
07:50Yeah, I think so.
07:51I mean, actually, a couple days ago, I kept getting some no-caller IDs
07:55calling my phone.
07:56So, I think that's where he's coming from with it.
07:59John loses his number.
08:01We've got a new employee.
08:03Hasn't gotten past his probation period yet.
08:05We're going to make sure he deletes your number
08:07so we don't let any of those shenanigans help out.
08:09All right, Ty.
08:10Ty, I'm somebody who lost my mom at a very young age,
08:13and that ESPN story did such a great job capturing your journey
08:16and how instrumental she was in your life.
08:19Can you share with some of our listeners just how big of an impact she had
08:24and why you are in your position today?
08:27Yeah, my mom, she had a big impact on my life.
08:32You know, growing up, playing basketball, she used to always just put a bug in my ear.
08:38She used to always tell me all the time, like, hey, I see you playing football.
08:40You might want to look into football.
08:42And I used to just brush it off.
08:44You know, I used to just tell her I'm going to the NBA
08:46because that's what I thought I was going to be doing.
08:49Like, a few years ago, I thought I was going to be in the NBA playing basketball,
08:53being compared to Chris Paul.
08:54And then, sure enough, I come home, I start playing football,
08:57and I see all this stuff happening for me, and I see doors opening up easily for me.
09:02And it's like, wow, like, a mother's feeling and thoughts are always right.
09:07It's true.
09:08So, you know, she just had a big impact on me as far as staying positive,
09:12staying optimistic, and just knowing, like, you know,
09:14nothing in this world will be handed to you, and you've got to work for everything.
09:17So I'm just glad, you know, she molded me into this.
09:23And it's just helped me as far as, you know, with this process
09:25and maneuvering through life and through football.
09:28So I'm forever grateful for it.
09:30And, you know, she's gone but never forgotten.
09:32Well, awesome story.
09:34We're rooting for you.
09:35You're a college grad.
09:37You have a degree from Nickel State.
09:39Now, John Carroll, you're working on what?
09:41Digital marketing.
09:42So either way, this has been an amazing journey.
09:46And we're rooting for you.
09:47And how cool would it be if you get drafted by the Cleveland Browns, Ty?
09:49We want to check in with you again at some point.
09:52Oh, yeah, thank you.
09:53And, yeah, you know, if the Cleveland Browns decide to come get me,
09:56then, you know, go Browns.
09:58We're going to go crazy.
09:59But, you know, if the cards are played in a different way,
10:03then, you know, I'm going to make the most of my opportunity.
10:05All right, Ty, we appreciate it.
10:07There he is, Ty Montgomery.
10:08John, lose his number after you thank him for coming on.
10:11Don't keep his number.
10:13And notice, he said Shador Sanders will be throwing him the football.
10:17Does he know something when he talked to the Browns?
10:20I think the first cannon has already been fired in the battle for the starting quarterback in 2026.
10:26Well, let's get him Pulley.
10:26Five.
10:26Seven.
10:26Six.
