00:00But Chris Rose joins us right now. He is on the Make It Right, Call Call, Kyle Wright hotline.
00:04Chris Rose, you hear him all the time on the fan. He's from John Boy. He's from NFL Network.
00:08He is the new host of the new American Gladiators, and he joins us right now on the hotline.
00:13Chris, how are you?
00:14Good morning, boys. How are you?
00:16We're doing wonderful. I want to ask you about Gladiators here in a moment.
00:19How long is the Cavs series going to go against Toronto, though? Let me ask you that to start off.
00:24I'd love to see it go no longer than five.
00:26Five, you know, things can get a little squirrely up there.
00:31Tonight's going to be really interesting because they're a pretty good defensive team
00:34and didn't show it at all on Saturday. I mean, that third quarter was insane.
00:38And I thought that Strews was really interesting because our oldest son lives with us,
00:44and he's a huge Cavs fan. And the minute he came back in the lineup, he goes,
00:49Dad, Dad is going to pay such dividends in the playoffs. Like, he's a baller.
00:53He's one of the few guys that isn't scared of the moment, and he's not. He is not.
00:58He wants the ball. He wants to be able to stretch the floor.
01:02And I dug it on Saturday, man. I was working, so I missed the first three and a half minutes
01:07of the third quarter. I turned it on. I was like, what the hell happened?
01:10This is great. So, good stuff.
01:13Yeah, Chris, I just thought they had another gear, and I thought James Harden,
01:17you give him more time. I think he's probably seen more pick-and-roll defenses
01:20than even John Stockton in NBA history.
01:23And for all that people know and say about him and his massive failures
01:28in big games on the biggest stages, he also has a lot of incredible playoff moments, too.
01:34They just, you know, they're against teams that he's supposed to beat,
01:37and people don't realize how many huge games he's had.
01:41Yeah, I mean, listen, his M.O. has been early in series. He's great.
01:46When it gets to game six and seven, it's a different narrative.
01:50And until he has a chance to break those, then that's what's going to, you know,
01:54carry through with him throughout his career.
01:56And, Anthony, I thought you brought up a great point about the pick-and-roll.
02:00The one pass I think he threw to Mobley, where they defended him,
02:04and somehow he was able to get a bounce pass perfectly to Mobley underneath.
02:09And I think he maybe got fouled on the play.
02:11But I was like, gosh, we just didn't have that earlier.
02:14Plus, they can't push him around.
02:16You know, he's not, he's never going to be on an all-defensive team,
02:20but he's still a large dude, you know, and we haven't had that the last few years.
02:26As much as I love Darius Garland, I love the way that he embraced our city,
02:31that he always had a smile on his face, his style of play is fantastic.
02:35When it came to this time of year, particularly paired with Donovan Mitchell
02:39in that backcourt, there were just going to be problems.
02:42And I don't think you're going to see that with Harden.
02:45Let me ask you this, Chris.
02:46What constitutes a quote-unquote successful season for the Cleveland Cavaliers this year?
02:51How far do they got to go?
02:52I think they, if they lose to Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals,
02:57I don't think there's any, there's disappointment, right?
03:00Because this team looks talented enough to win an NBA championship,
03:04but that Boston team's loaded, and they're so well coached,
03:08and they just understand every aspect of what they are supposed to do individually
03:12to make their team better.
03:14And the fact, you know, that Tatum's back and playing well, like it's,
03:20that's a tough go.
03:22Chris Rose joining us here.
03:24He's from John Boy Media, NFL Network, the host of the American Gladiators.
03:28I mean, I'm going to get Gladiators here in a second.
03:30Let me ask you this about the Guardians here.
03:33First, is it too early to worry about Kate Smith?
03:36Because I'm telling people it's too early to worry about Kate Smith.
03:38Before we go on to anything else.
03:41I don't think it's ever too early to worry about relievers,
03:44particularly when they've had the workload that Kate Smith has the last two years.
03:47That's where I worry, is that at some point, whenever I've talked to people throughout baseball,
03:52like when Andrew Miller went on that ridiculous run in 2016,
03:56I remember talking to guys in spring training.
03:59They were like, well, he was great.
04:02Now, granted, Andrew Miller was considerably older than Kate Smith is now at the time,
04:06but they said, just be careful.
04:08When you get used like that, when you're a reliever,
04:11and you just get thrown out there every day,
04:13and you're warming up virtually every day at some point,
04:17there's diminishing returns.
04:18And so that's what I worry about, is the usage has been so high.
04:25That's part of the deal.
04:26And I just hope that, yeah, he's fighting through a little something,
04:29or maybe teams have something on him.
04:31That's what I really hope, because that's correctable,
04:34and that's not a health thing or usage thing.
04:38But, yeah, I think it's okay to be worried about him a little bit.
04:41But the batting average is low.
04:43The slugging is up.
04:45Is this the perfect type of mix now for the Guardians lineup?
04:52Perfect?
04:52No, this is not a perfect mix.
04:55I mean, look, what I will say is this.
04:58Like, Rocchio, since he got sent down last year,
05:01gives you big league at-bats now.
05:03You know, we don't have enough of those guys.
05:05Now, I think Valera gives you big league at-bats,
05:08so that's another one.
05:09Manzardo will come around eventually.
05:12But, you know, we still lack right-handed consistency in this lineup,
05:18and that is something that is going to cost us severely.
05:21We just have too many guys that are left-handed that we're trying to rely on.
05:25And so, but it's been a fun watch so far.
05:28I mean, the starting pitching has been incredible.
05:30Parker Messick frickin' looks like he just walked out of the cornfield in Iowa.
05:35I know he's from Florida, but, you know, work with me here with the pants.
05:39He's great to watch.
05:40I mean, I asked, you know, I was asking around with family members, like,
05:44where do we rank Bybee right now in our rotation?
05:47Is he three or four?
05:48Like, that's pretty good.
05:49And when Slade is your number five, you feel great about that.
05:53So they're throwing the heck out of the ball.
05:57And I think, you know, I have them for 80 wins, as I always do.
06:00And who knows, they're going to shock the you-know-what out of me again.
06:03And I can't wait to be wrong.
06:05Well, you know who shocked basically everybody to start the season?
06:08A healthy Chase DeLauder, who was sensational, had the quick five home runs.
06:12A little bit of a slump now.
06:13I think one of his last 19, he's gone 13 games without a home run.
06:16But he still is an imposing figure up in that batter's box.
06:21He's been putting balls off the wall.
06:23We know he can go the other way with it.
06:24What do you make so far of the DeLauder experience?
06:28Yeah, I mean, it's...
06:31We haven't had a lot of guys that we have brought up from the minor leagues
06:35where you're like, I can't wait to see them.
06:37And I can't wait to see if they're going to print a jersey
06:39with a big D and a small E and big L.
06:43And, like, do I wait for that one?
06:48He's...
06:48You know, you remember the golfer Jim Furyk?
06:51Mm-hmm.
06:52Yeah.
06:53For people that don't remember him, go spin him up on YouTube.
06:56Really good, consistent player.
06:58Had a really funky swing.
07:00And that's kind of the way I compare Chase DeLauder.
07:03It's like, this is a...
07:04This can't work.
07:05Like, I could get this guy out and whiffle ball in the backyard.
07:09And somehow he's able to keep his hands in and drive the ball.
07:12And we just...
07:13We haven't had physically imposing players when they get in the batter's box.
07:17They all seem like they're 5'8".
07:19I'm like, really?
07:20We're going to go with the JV kid again?
07:22Like, that's who we're bringing up?
07:23So, that part's nice, too.
07:26Go ahead.
07:26Ask your Miles thing if you want to.
07:27Yeah, Chris Rose with us right now.
07:29We're going to get to the American Gladiators in just a second.
07:32We got into a heated dispute because Miles Garrett doesn't go to a lot of the offseason stuff for the
07:39Browns.
07:39So, that's nothing new.
07:40But you do have a new head coach.
07:41Saw Lamar Jackson was there with his new head coach.
07:45First chance he got.
07:46Miles was at the Cavs game on Saturday.
07:49And he's already back on the road, even though veteran minicamp voluntary begins tomorrow in Berea.
07:54Is he sending any kind of a message?
07:58No.
07:59Do you know when I want Miles Garrett to show up?
08:01The first Sunday of the year.
08:04That's when I care.
08:05What else do we need him for?
08:07Like, put him in bubble wrap.
08:08Cool.
08:09The whole, well, here's what he should do for his head coach.
08:12And Lamar showed up.
08:14Just real quickly, I'm going to go over this.
08:16What position does Lamar play?
08:18Quarterback.
08:20Yes, quarterback.
08:21Quarterback.
08:21It's very hard to run a practice without your starting quarterback.
08:27Miles, I'll see it.
08:28Dude.
08:29Like, we don't, would it be perfect if he showed up and all this?
08:32Yeah, but it's called, what's it called again tomorrow?
08:35Voluntary.
08:37Voluntary.
08:37Which means you do not have to be there.
08:40And when that guy has performed at a Hall of Fame level and has been the best defensive player,
08:46not only in our franchise's history, but on the planet the last several years, cool.
08:52Like, there's different rules for different people.
08:55Right.
08:56It would be nice if he was there.
08:58Absolutely.
08:58We'd all feel better.
08:59But, and I understand the talking point.
09:02I get it.
09:03And people are going to sit here and have an opinion.
09:06Well, guess what?
09:06You're all going to erase that.
09:08The first Sunday of the season, when he's out there kicking some tackles behind, and
09:13he's getting two and a half sacks on Sunday, and hopefully we're winning the game.
09:16This stuff does not matter to me in April.
09:18It just never has.
09:20It never will.
09:21I understand the talking point for people that got to fill airtime, but it's not.
09:25It's not a big deal at all.
09:27Well, Chris Rose joining us.
09:28He's on the Make It Right Call Kyle Wright hotline.
09:30He is the host of the all-new American Gladiators, which is coming to Prime Video.
09:35I am told there will be joust and there will be Powerball in this new series.
09:40Tell me I'm correct, please.
09:41Yes.
09:42Oh, yeah.
09:43Of course.
09:44Are you kidding me?
09:45Now, Powerball, here's the thing.
09:47So, I call the play-by-play for it.
09:48The first three episodes are already out.
09:50Those dropped last Friday.
09:52The next few are dropping on this Friday.
09:54So, make sure you tune in.
09:56And Powerball is even more excruciating and painful in the most positive way possible
10:02than when we saw it in the 90s.
10:05And it is what – I mean, the athletes have gotten so much better.
10:08I'm not just talking about the Gladiators who are built out of this world.
10:11I can't believe I'm the same species as the Gladiators, to be honest with you, right?
10:15I mean, I would walk in and see them hanging out and flexing in the mirror
10:19and drinking their 18 protein shakes and, you know, lifting guys like me, you know,
10:23for their, you know, dumbbell practice.
10:26And I'm like, we can't possibly be the same.
10:30But you look at the contenders and the way that these people train.
10:33I mean, we know it.
10:34We all have friends that look like they were just chiseled out of granite as well,
10:37and we're all jealous for it because, you know, some of us have those dad bods rocking around.
10:41But it's great.
10:42I mean, the enthusiasm, the atmosphere, everything about it, we pay homage to the OGs,
10:51but kind of take it up to a new level.
10:53Well, that's what – you mentioned the OGs, and obviously there was a documentary about the original,
10:58and we all watched it.
10:59We all watched every episode when we were younger,
11:01and there were some that just seemed mentally unstable and that a fight could break out at any moment.
11:07Are there any of those – any good candidates for somebody just losing it and flying off the handle?
11:14Well, I can tell you 100% that all of them are mentally stable.
11:18Now, the one – there's always one you've got to keep your eye on,
11:20and we had 16 amazing gladiators.
11:23We all hung out at night.
11:24We had a great time swapping stories, getting to know each other,
11:27just kind of away from the arena.
11:29But the one you've got to keep your eye on is the Bull,
11:32and he's the biggest, and he's the baddest, and he's 285 pounds.
11:37He's a great dude.
11:39He's got one of those push broom mustaches like he would have been a great reliever,
11:43guys in the 80s, walking out of a bullpen.
11:47And he just is kind of – you'll see.
11:50I mean, you can see it in the first few episodes that air already.
11:54He does some stuff throughout the season that will just make your head spin a little bit,
11:58in a good way, mostly.
11:59I would say like 98.6, like body temperature, a good way.
12:04And then there's the other times where you're like, Bull, get back in line.
12:09And he's like, okay, okay, okay.
12:11Lama's showing me the videos right now over on his computer.
12:13The mustache is incredible.
12:15It's like –
12:16It is a great mustache.
12:16A little bit of Tom Selleck meets Dan Severn from the old UFC.
12:20And that's what we need in this world is a little bit more of the mustache
12:23and a little bit more of the Tom Selleck.
12:24Chris, thank you so much for the time.
12:26Enjoy the rest of your week.
12:27Enjoy everything American Gladiator style.
12:29We'll talk to you again soon.
12:31We appreciate it, guys.
12:33Yeah, check it out on Prime Video.
12:34And I'll see you before the draft on NFL Network.
12:36A chance to win $100,000 for the new people that are getting involved in American Gladiators.
12:44The Reboot, the iconic series, contenders across the country against formidable gladiators
12:49like the bull where they take on joust and powerball and new competitions including the ring and collision
12:56for a shot at a $100,000 prize.
13:00That was Chris Rose on the Make It Right Call, Kyle Wright Hotline.
13:03American Gladiators now running on Amazon Prime Video.
13:07There you go.
13:07There you go.
