27 March - National Evening Forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Well, Saturday's looking quite a showery day for many of us. It's on Sunday when there's
00:05going to be some more persistent rain. But let's look at the bigger picture to start
00:09off with. And there is actually a front to the southeast now. It's this front that's
00:13come across the country through the last 24 hours or so. And it brought some cloud, it
00:18brought some rain, but it's also bringing colder air behind it with our air coming from
00:22the northwest, a cold direction. And it's on that northwesterly flow. Plenty of showers
00:27will be piling in on Saturday. Perhaps a quieter start to the day on Sunday, but then another
00:32system comes into northwestern parts. So more cloudy, wet weather to arrive through the day.
00:38That rain could be quite persistent. Back to the here and now, however. And yes, that front
00:43in the southeast lingering for a little while yet, but the cloud and rain should clear through
00:47during the start of the night, leaving drier, clearer weather across much of England and
00:51Wales. A few showers here and there, yes, but a lot of dry weather for many here. A different
00:56story across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Plenty of showers continuing through this evening
01:00and the start of the night. And then a spell of more persistent rain sleet and hill snow
01:05developing as we go through the early hours of Saturday morning. And there will be some
01:10strong blustery winds here as well. Lighter winds across England and Wales. And with those
01:14clearer skies, temperatures are likely to drop close to freezing. Most towns and cities holding
01:19up a few degrees above freezing. But nonetheless, a bit of a chilly fresh start first thing on
01:24Saturday morning. Then through Saturday itself, well, parts of England and Wales towards the
01:29south clinging on to some fine weather for a little while longer. But we are going to
01:33see swathes of showery rain making their way southwards. So really, by the time that we
01:38get to early afternoon, most places are at risk of seeing a few showers, just a few sheltered
01:43spots perhaps towards the southwest, maybe seeing, well, only one or two as opposed to the more
01:48widespread showers across any other parts. Now, the showers could be quite heavy. It could be a bit
01:54thundery at times. There could be some hail mixed in. And with that colder air we have across us,
02:00well, some winteriness, some sleet, some snow, particularly in the higher ground in the north,
02:04but not confined to those places. We could see a little bit further south and perhaps to some lower
02:09levels at times as well. It is going to be a chilly feeling day for sure. Yes, there'll be some
02:14sunshine
02:15around, but temperatures a little bit below average for the time of year. Most places staying in single
02:20figures, though, some places towards the south getting into double digits. We do need to factor
02:25in the brisk winds, though they are going to make it feel even colder than those temperatures suggest.
02:31More showers to come as we go into the evening, but we should start to see many of them clearing,
02:37and so it should turn drier, especially across England and Wales, with the showers easing and then
02:42again clear skies. So once more it is going to be another fairly chilly night to come, with temperatures
02:48falling close to freezing, perhaps a little bit colder than this coming night for some places,
02:53with more likely to see a bit of a frost first thing on Sunday morning. And then towards the
02:59northwest we have that system starting to make its way in, so cloud and rain arriving here.
03:05Then through Sunday itself, whilst it will be a bright sunny start to the day across England and
03:10Wales, the cloud in the northwest will feed its way through, so turning quite grey and then quite damp as
03:16well as that persistent rain pushes its way southeastwards across the country. It is going to be quite
03:21persistent and it could be quite heavy at times as well, with some blustery winds mixed in, and then
03:27showers following in behind across much of Scotland and Northern Ireland. And again, still a cold feel to
03:33things, so some winteriness mixed in with those showers and temperatures, perhaps up a degree or so
03:38compared to Saturday, but not really feeling any warmer or milder because of the cloud, the rain and the blustery
03:44winds that are coming through. So still feeling a little bit unpleasant really at times.
03:49Looking even further ahead, and that system does eventually clear away towards the southeast as we
03:54go into next week. There will be more showers coming in from the northwest as we go into Monday.
03:59They'll be mainly towards the north of the UK, further south a greater chance of avoiding them and
04:04staying largely dry. More changeable weather coming in, or it's more likely towards the north-northwest of
04:10the UK. You can see an area of low pressure quite far to the north of us, driving some more
04:14blustery
04:15winds here. Meanwhile, further south, signs of something a bit drier as we go through the first
04:20week of what is the Easter holidays for a large chunk of the UK. It could be high-pressure building,
04:26but it doesn't look like it's going to last particularly long. What I'm a bit more confident
04:30about is the fact that temperatures should creep up a little bit at least, and so it's perhaps not going
04:35to feel quite as cold as we go towards the middle part of next week. We will, of course, be
04:40keeping
04:40you up to date with the forecast through the weekend. Don't forget that the clocks spring forward
04:45early on Sunday morning, so make sure you change your clock, but I'll see you again soon. Bye-bye.
