21 April - National Evening Forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Hello, plenty more sunshine to come over the next few days, but also for some of us, quite a brisk
00:06and chilly wind will continue to blow.
00:09It's been strengthening today across the southwest of England, and here's the reason why.
00:13Low pressure down to the southwest.
00:15The dominant force of our weather is this high, but as this low just nudges a little closer,
00:20what it's doing is just squeezing the isobars together, and that is generating the brisk winds across the southwest.
00:27They've been strengthening through Tuesday, getting a little stronger as we go into Wednesday morning.
00:33Gusts around the coast and over the moors of 40, maybe 50 miles an hour.
00:38So a brisk wind here and getting stronger in south Wales also.
00:41That's not the only place where we're keeping an eye on the winds, because although not as strong,
00:46these easterly winds are bringing a chill across the east coast of England and increasing the low cloud,
00:52or ha, as it's known locally, into the northeast of Scotland.
00:56So it could be quite a grey start to Wednesday here.
00:58For most of us, though, we'll have clear skies.
01:02And where the winds are lightest in, say, western Scotland, temperatures may dip close to freezing here.
01:07But for most places, that breeze actually helps you to mix the air up, so temperatures not falling too far.
01:13But still a fresh start to Wednesday, four or five.
01:16So despite quite a lot of sunshine, it'll be one of those mornings where it looks beautiful,
01:20but it really will feel pretty chilly as you step out, particularly with that easterly wind continuing on the east
01:26coast,
01:26and especially in the southwest, where it will be a gusty, blustery day.
01:31Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, and along the south coast of Wales, noticeably windy.
01:36A bit of a breeze blowing elsewhere, but as you can see, there will also be plenty of sunshine.
01:41The mist and low cloud tending to melt away from northeast Scotland.
01:44The high cloud spilling into the southwest from that low we saw earlier,
01:48just the threat of a few showers creeping into the islands of Scilly and West Cornwall later on.
01:53But I think there'll be few and far between.
01:56Temperatures, well, actually a little bit higher with a bit more sunshine tomorrow,
01:59if you can get out of that breeze, feeling quite warm, 16, 17, 18.
02:03But of course, some places you won't be able to get out of that breeze.
02:06Southwest England feeling cooler here with that gusty wind and a bit more cloud.
02:09And on the east coast, well, temperatures may not get a bunch above 7 or 8 degrees Celsius.
02:15So this is the temperature map when compared to the average for the time of year.
02:19And you can see that east coast will be cool for this time of year,
02:23whereas parts of South Wales, southwest England will be above average.
02:27It all depends on the feel as well.
02:29With the winds, it'll feel even cooler on that east coast because of that breeze and in the far southwest.
02:34The setup doesn't really change very much as we head into Thursday.
02:37May be that low drifting away, so we won't see as much high clouds spilling in.
02:41And again, some pockets of frost likely where we have the lighter winds across the north.
02:45But I think most towns and cities staying above freezing.
02:48But certainly dropping low enough for most places.
02:50But notice with those stronger winds, temperatures don't drop as far in the Isles of Scilly.
02:55So Thursday's a similar story.
02:57Again, there is the possibility of ha and sea threats on the east coast.
03:01So it might just be a little misty here, particularly in the mornings.
03:03But generally, it's going to be a cracker of a day.
03:06Fine and sunny.
03:07The wind's still noticeable in the south.
03:09Still a brisk breeze blowing here, but it won't be as strong, I don't think, as Wednesday.
03:14And still that breeze coming in from the North Sea means it will be chilly on some of those North
03:18Sea coasts.
03:18Again, some places may not get out of single digits.
03:21But in lands, temperatures are a touch higher, more widely in the high teens.
03:25We might squeak up to 20 in a few places.
03:27That is likely to continue as we head into the weekend as well.
03:32For more on that, you'll want to watch the deep dive with Alex Burkill.
03:36And that's another good reason to subscribe to our YouTube channel.
