12 May - National evening forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00The cool feel to things looks set to continue through the rest of this week.
00:05I wanted to take a look at the bigger picture first of all.
00:08And yes, currently there is a front, a cold front becoming an occluded front lying across southern parts.
00:13Behind this, we have this cooler, fresher air coming in.
00:16But I also wanted to draw your attention to what the low pressure systems near us are doing,
00:21starting off towards the north of us, but then feeding southwards down the North Sea.
00:25And because we generally then have low pressure to the east of us through this week,
00:29we stick with this northerly flow, dragging in that cooler, fresher air from the north,
00:34which is why temperatures are going to stay a bit below average for the time of year.
00:39Through the rest of Tuesday, however, actually across many parts of England and Wales,
00:43lots of clear skies through the evening, so it could turn quite chilly quite quickly.
00:47But then the blustery, showery weather across northern parts, well, that will become more widespread.
00:52And some of these showers, well, they could be wintry over parts of Scotland and could be heavy elsewhere.
00:57So some relatively intense bursts of rain, quite likely for some of us overnight.
01:03With the blustery showers and the breeze picking up, whilst it may be a bit chilly for some of us
01:08to start the night across the south,
01:10I think temperatures may lift a little bit, or at least they're not going to drop as low as they
01:14have done through some recent nights.
01:16Nonetheless, if you're in the shelter from the wind, get any prolonged clear skies.
01:20A touch of frost can't be ruled out, particularly over some parts of Scotland here.
01:23Temperatures may just about drop below freezing in the most prone spots.
01:28Through Wednesday then, plenty of showers, some of them heavy, some of them thundery.
01:32Could be some hail, particularly towards the east.
01:35There will be some drier, brighter breaks in between.
01:38Maybe a bit of sunshine here and there, but that's going to be pretty limited.
01:42On the whole, it's looking fairly showery for many of us.
01:45And we need to watch out for some blustery winds, especially towards the west and also the southwest.
01:50Slightly lighter winds towards the northeast.
01:53But those blustery winds will make it feel even cooler than these temperatures suggest.
01:57So for many temperatures down a few degrees compared to Tuesday.
02:01And when you factor in those blustery winds, it's going to feel several degrees colder.
02:05Pretty cool for the time of year.
02:08More showers to come through the end of the day on Wednesday.
02:12Those starting to break up, starting to ease a little bit as we go overnight.
02:17Coastal parts, particularly those exposed to that northerly flow, will continue to see showers through much of the night.
02:23But more inland areas, more sheltered spots, seeing things turning a bit dry with some clearer skies.
02:28So I would expect temperatures to drop a bit lower for some places than they will through this coming night.
02:34So more likely to see a bit of frost, especially where we get those drier, clearer slots and where we're
02:40in the shelter from that brisk breeze.
02:42That wind will be easing as we go through overnight Wednesday and into Thursday.
02:46So Thursday, the winds don't look as strong.
02:48It won't be quite as blustery.
02:49But nonetheless, there will still be a wind around and it is going to still be coming from that cold
02:54northerly direction.
02:55More showers developing through the day.
02:58And again, they could be heavy.
02:59They could be thundery at times.
03:01Most of us are likely to see some showers through the day at some point.
03:05Still a bit cool temperature wise for this stage in May.
03:10Low teens really at best for most of us.
03:13And whilst the winds will be easing, the wind will still make it feel a little bit chillier than these
03:17temperatures may suggest.
03:19Later on, as we go through the end of the week, well, we are going to see something a little
03:24bit drier perhaps.
03:25We stick with the showery theme for a while as we go through the end of Thursday and into Friday.
03:30But yeah, Friday looks slightly drier than the days before it.
03:35And will that drier weather last until the weekend?
03:37Well, probably not through the whole of the weekend.
03:39I think most of us will see some rain at times.
03:42But I am also expecting temperatures to rise a little bit as well.
03:45What's going to happen further ahead?
03:47Well, I'm sure that will be covered in the deep dive, which you can catch on our YouTube channel.
03:51And also in the 10-day trend, which will be available tomorrow.
03:54Bye-bye.
