00:12What is that?
00:13I don't know what that is.
00:15Oh, flashback.
00:16The challenge is going to be a flashback.
00:19Oh my god, I cannot remember the last time I saw a boombox.
00:23Honestly, I think it was the last time I saw Madonna in concert.
00:26Is it a mixtape?
00:27Why do I know how to do this so easily?
00:29I'm telling my age on this, all right?
00:31Because you're old.
00:33Hi, designer.
00:35I guess you figured out how to play this old boombox.
00:37And I want you all to listen very carefully,
00:39because this is a hint for your next challenge.
00:42Tim and a special guest will meet you
00:44where you will dive into your next challenge.
00:47That's scary.
00:48What does the diving have to do with an awesome old boombox?
00:51She's throwing me with the dive.
00:53Dive?
00:54This is exciting.
00:56You rocked the box.
00:57Okay, taking it back to the old school because I'm an old fool who's so cool.
01:03There it is.
01:12Oh my god.
01:14What is it?
01:15We see Tim, and there is a giant dumpster.
01:20That's crazy.
01:22With a bunch of wires and old computers, keyboards and circuit boards.
01:28So I'm thinking unconventional challenge.
01:32Good morning, designers.
01:34Good morning.
01:35And welcome to our beautiful and pristine location.
01:41I am delighted to introduce you to editor-in-chief of Marie Claire Magazine, Anne Fullenwider.
01:47Welcome, Anne.
01:48Hi, Tim.
01:49Good morning, designers.
01:50You know, at Marie Claire, we love fashion.
01:52And we love the creative people who are moving it forward, just like you.
01:55We also love the smart, innovative people moving the tech world forward.
01:58So today, we're going to marry the two.
02:00We're challenging you to merge the worlds of technology and fashion.
02:03Designers, this is an unconventional materials challenge.
02:07You are going to be using outdated technology to create a modern and fashionable look.
02:13These dumpsters are full of yesterday's technology.
02:16All these items need a new life, and you are going to give them that.
02:20So, you each have a shopping cart.
02:23When your shopping carts are full, I will call time.
02:26And you have one day for this challenge.
02:29So are you ready to dumpster dive?
02:31Yes.
02:32I'm just ready to get this party started.
02:34Three, two, one, go.
02:37Whoa.
02:41I don't know what I just grabbed.
02:45I'm going to make Wally.
02:46Ooh, hello.
02:48Has anybody seen any more Polaroids?
02:51This will definitely be a challenge, given that it's not material in the sense of fabrics
02:57or anything that are woven.
02:58It's going to require a lot of thought and imagination.
03:01All right, designers.
03:02Time's up.
03:03You have reached a saturation level with these carts.
03:08Good work, designers.
03:09I want you each to take your shopping cart and push it back to the workroom, and I will
03:14meet you there.
03:15All right.
03:16Off you go.
03:17Oh!
03:19Yay!
03:32I can tell that something's off with Jake today.
03:35He seemed kind of weird all morning, just really quiet.
03:39I hope he's okay.
03:42Know what you're doing, Joe?
03:44I know the shape.
03:45I'm going to implement the shape.
03:46It's going to be the challenge.
03:48You better make a sexy piece.
03:50Like, it should be so sexy.
03:52Me?
03:52Yes.
03:53I am.
03:53I'm making a knee-length skirt.
03:56I've been listening to the judges for what they've had to say about my dowdy or mumsy
04:00or matronly looks.
04:02I think this is really going down the mumsy, matronly route.
04:05It is so matronly, madame.
04:08It's not even funny.
04:10Mumsy.
04:11Matronly.
04:12Yep.
04:12There it is.
04:13Perfect.
04:13Don't let me use the M-word again.
04:15I'm going to push the envelope here.
04:16I'm going really sexy up top.
04:18I'm going really short at the bottom.
04:19I'm really excited about it.
04:20High five, girl.
04:22Oh, please.
04:23Back off, sister.
04:24Think outside the box.
04:25Think outside the box.
04:37Chicken strut.
04:40Boop.
04:42Is everyone excited about this challenge?
04:45Yes.
04:45Yes.
04:46It should be really fun.
04:48There are a few things to underscore.
04:49One is you need to transform these unconventional materials into modern fashion.
04:55The ideal is that whatever you design doesn't look like what it is.
05:00Now, this needs to be wearable.
05:02If your models can barely move, it's going to be a bit of an issue.
05:07You have until 11 o'clock tonight.
05:09I will be back later to check in with you, of course.
05:12And you will have a model fitting later as well.
05:15Tim, can I have a word?
05:17Of course.
05:18Yeah, we can talk, Jake.
05:19Awesome.
05:19Carry on, everyone.
05:21Jake, come with me.
05:23You lead me.
05:24Hey.
05:25Um, Tim, I was, um, informed this morning that, um, my dog, um, uh, we need to terminate,
05:39uh, life.
05:40I'm in.
05:41I'm so sorry.
05:43I've been through this myself.
05:44I know how painful it is.
05:45It's horrible.
05:46This is just the dog that's been with me through the loss of my parents.
05:49Oh, dear.
05:50Hi, buddy.
05:51Hey.
05:52Oh.
05:53This dog has been my rock when I needed one.
05:59And I, um, I just, uh.
06:03Well, I mean, they get emotional.
06:07To be perfectly honest, this is an amazing opportunity, but it was just not worth a lifetime
06:12effort for me.
06:13I know.
06:14No, I do know.
06:15And we'll miss you terribly.
06:23Designers.
06:24Jake, Jake has something to say to you.
06:27Guys, I've gotta go.
06:30My dog.
06:31It's going through a lot.
06:32It needs to be put to sleep.
06:35And I, I don't expect any of you to understand.
06:42I totally understand.
06:43I have two dogs, and I would, I would leave too.
06:46I get it.
06:47Keep rocking it.
06:49We're gonna miss you.
06:51I'll, I'll miss you guys as well, but, um, sometimes life happens.
06:55You have to do what you have to do, and things happen for a reason.
06:58Project Runway is an amazing opportunity.
07:03But faced with the situation I'm in, it's the right thing to do.
07:08Never know who's going through what.
07:12Wow.
07:25I don't know why, but I love unconventional challenges.
07:32So I start working on the wires, and I realize they're not as easy as I thought they would be.
07:37I first need to peel them apart and remove the hard core edge from inside.
07:42And then they become much more moldable.
07:47Ah!
07:52What a quiet room.
07:54I heard tons of pounding earlier.
07:56Are you having fun?
07:57Yes.
07:58Good.
07:58Share the fun with me.
08:00All right.
08:00Hi, Lindsay.
08:02What are these?
08:03Uh, this came out of the inside of a radio.
08:05And what are these?
08:06Those are keys.
08:08I like the fact we can still read them.
08:10So I was considering just, like, doing the keys over it to the waist, and then possibly at the bottom
08:15moving into this, because it is gonna be longer in the back.
08:18I know I'm not gonna have enough of this, and I know that's what you'll do.
08:21Well, but does this have to be a gown?
08:23No, but I kind of wanted to do something romantic.
08:28That's pretty romantic if it's a shorter skirt.
08:31Yeah.
08:32Thank you so much.
08:32Lindsay, carry on.
08:33Thanks, Tim.
08:35This was my original sketch.
08:37Uh-huh.
08:37And, I mean, I love playing with the silhouette and the shape of a woman's body.
08:41And so I wanted to apply the wire and make it very strong and sharp.
08:45Candice's dress is very, very cool.
08:47She has this edge to her that a lot of designers don't have in the competition.
08:53While we were dumpster diving, I found a container full of Polaroids.
08:58So I created all these prints one by one.
09:02You actually created this from the found object.
09:06Yeah.
09:06So they're all attached?
09:07I can still pull it off if I don't want to go with it, but I wanted to give it
09:10something that they all were straight on.
09:13Do you think that I should cut these down or just keep them as Polaroids?
09:17No.
09:17Oh, no, I keep them as Polaroids.
09:19That, I think, is a huge strength of this.
09:22Don't doubt yourself.
09:23I appreciate it.
09:24All right.
09:24Thank you, Ashley.
09:25I saw this aluminum piping.
09:27Mm-hmm.
09:27I want to make it look like armor, so I wanted to kind of play with texture with it.
09:31Oh, you are.
09:31It's a beautiful surface.
09:32Oh, thanks.
09:33What happens when it gets down to the broader skirt?
09:36The scale is going to get larger.
09:37How big do they get?
09:38You don't need to, like, have them stuck together.
09:40You can go like that, you know, and trim them so they all look like one piece.
09:44Well, but they're like a modern, unexpected, new paillette.
09:49Carry on.
09:53This is my base or my silhouette for my design.
09:55Okay.
09:56These are mouse pads.
09:57Oh, I know what they are.
09:58I'm trying to make a decision of creating some type of texture, but I didn't want to go too far
10:05with the top because a lot of the detailing comes in the back.
10:08So I was trying to figure out, do I keep it simple and texture?
10:13Okay.
10:13You don't keep it simple.
10:14All right.
10:15There's too much ambition in this room.
10:17Mm-hmm.
10:17In this form, it would worry me.
10:19Well, I have these, but I don't have a lot of them.
10:21I would probably use the wrong side versus the smoother side.
10:25I just feel like that would be a little bit more expected to use that side, but with this, it's
10:29kind of like, well, what is that?
10:30I like this idea.
10:32You like that idea?
10:33Yeah, I do.
10:33Okay.
10:34You have a good base, but it needs to evolve.
10:36And make it work.
10:37What's up, Tim?
10:38What's up, Merlene?
10:40I'm super excited about the challenge.
10:41Oh, good.
10:42So, I'm kind of scared of her look.
10:46It's a little intimidating.
10:48It's a little big birdish.
10:49Whoa.
10:50But if the rest of the garment is in service to the shoulders, it could really work.
10:54Oh, yeah.
10:55I have a parachute, you know, and it's called immunity.
10:59I'm just going to go real crazy, because this is the only time I can make a bird outfit.
11:04Hey, Joe.
11:04Hey, Tim.
11:05How are you?
11:05Talk to me.
11:06I feel like I need to kind of sex up my design a little bit.
11:11Okay.
11:11I've actually been able to sew the wire, so it's giving me structure.
11:16The back is really low.
11:17I'm going to wait to fit it to have it fit perfectly.
11:19And now I'm playing with different applique.
11:21So, I have three different colors of blue, and then, of course, I have a ton of black.
11:25I'm also going to paint the muslin.
11:26So, there could be portions where I may leave muslin.
11:30I mean, another term for the unconventional challenge is fool the eye.
11:33Yeah.
11:33As long as we're fooled, it's successful.
11:36And then I've got all these really cool, like, little chip boards.
11:39I feel confident, though.
11:39Okay.
11:40Well, in that case, I'm going to leave you alone.
11:42Cool.
11:42I think Joe might be in trouble, because he's not thinking about the materials.
11:46He's thinking sexy, which is something that he's had a problem with not doing enough of.
11:51But I think that for an unconventional challenge, it's more important to be creative than sexy.
11:55My initial design idea was to create an off-the-shoulder look.
12:00My concern about this is that it screams mouse pads.
12:03I mean, even Edmund, who's using the mouse pads, is going to cover them with a texture.
12:08I understand.
12:09But I really like this effect.
12:12I like the way it is.
12:14Okay, Lori.
12:18Wow.
12:19I hope it's a good wow.
12:20Well, I want to know more about what you're doing.
12:23Okay.
12:24So, this wire, I split open, and obviously, I found all of this.
12:28Oh, that's what this is?
12:29Yeah.
12:29No, I'm excited by this, Wavno.
12:31Okay.
12:31You just have a lot of work to do.
12:33No, I'll make it work.
12:34I think this could be a big hit.
12:36All right, keep going.
12:37Thank you so much.
12:39Good night.
12:41Time is, like, disappearing today like no other day.
12:44I just want to go for a smoke.
12:45I'm worried about swap notes.
12:46I just need a break from them.
12:48I can kind of see his energy changing a little bit.
12:51But he is so talented and just really needs to focus.
13:11Okay.
13:12Let's get back to work.
13:18Yay!
13:20Another unconventional challenge.
13:22What is this?
13:22It's so cool to have immunity.
13:24Then I can just go crazy, and then they can be like, I hate it, and I can be like,
13:27I love it.
13:28The sizing is so off.
13:30I'm about three inches shy of covering her backside.
13:34This stuff shrank so much from the paint.
13:37So I'm having to go back to the drawing board, recut some panels to put into the back of the
13:41dress.
13:43Oh, don't worry about it.
13:44Yeah, it ripped, but it's okay.
13:46For model fittings, I whip out a crop top, and it doesn't fit.
13:51Nope.
13:52No.
13:52I'm basically starting from scratch right now.
13:55Now I feel that my model is worried about me, too.
13:58And I'll just make sure I take your measurement.
14:01I'll figure something out.
14:02Awesome.
14:03Thanks.
14:04Bye, darling.
14:05We'll get back to work.
14:09Now it's starting to look like something.
14:11I was a little scared there for a second.
14:13Lori, are you going to use your electric blue mouse pads?
14:16My direction is changing slightly.
14:18Is that okay?
14:19Yeah, it's fine.
14:20The wire's not sticking to the muslin because I've painted it, so it's not really holding.
14:25So instead of using the wire to create the paneling, I'm kind of trying to cheat the eye, as Tim
14:31would say,
14:31and I'm using the mouse pads instead.
14:34Does anyone feel like they're going to finish?
14:36Because I'm, like, really worried, and I'm normally not...
14:39I'm with you, Candace.
14:41You still have a back to do?
14:42Oh, yeah.
14:43We just got to speed it up, you guys.
14:53I think that looks interesting.
14:54Well, I mean, this is just, I'm just trying to figure out what to do.
14:57Maybe we'll just put this right here.
15:00I win!
15:01I'm starting to kind of realize as I'm seeing, like, the types of things that are winning here,
15:05I don't really know if my work fits in appropriately.
15:08It's kind of like when you're dating someone and you, like, don't know what they want ever.
15:11I feel like I'm dating the judges and it's not going well.
15:14It's time to go.
15:16At this point, Kelly could be in trouble.
15:19The judges are going to love it or hate it.
15:20The score is just not getting finished.
15:23Definitely Swap Neil's in trouble.
15:25I'm going to have to peak tomorrow.
15:26I'm not finished.
15:27But then at the same time, Ashley's still working.
15:31Lindsay's not finished.
15:33Marlene's not finished either.
15:35The only one I know for sure that's done, it's Joe.
15:38Oh my God, I'm so tired.
15:40Guys, make sure you unplug your glue gun.
15:42I just hope this freaking glue stays.
15:44In the morning, I guess we'll feel much better.
15:47You think so?
15:48I hope so.
16:05There's my glue gun.
16:07You got it.
16:08There you go.
16:08Woo!
16:10Hey, Tim.
16:11Hey, Tim.
16:12Hi.
16:13Good morning, everyone.
16:14Wow.
16:15A lot of progress has been made.
16:17Excellent.
16:17All right, designers.
16:18I'm sending you your models shortly.
16:20You will have two hours to send them to the Mary Kay Color Design Studio
16:24and the Sally Beauty Studio.
16:26Use the Just Fab accessories wall very carefully.
16:30I will check back with you later.
16:33Bye.
16:40Okay.
16:41I'm going to hope and pray that this stuff...
16:44holds.
16:45So much to do!
16:47In so little time.
16:49Joseph, how's everything?
16:51The thing is, is if I keep going, I'm going to start decorating it like a Christmas tree
16:54and I don't want to decorate it.
16:58How are you?
17:00It's nice to see you.
17:01Thank you so much.
17:02I love what you're wearing today.
17:05That is going to go to your mark for now.
17:09Okay, ready?
17:09I'm going to zip you in.
17:11Here's it.
17:23There are a lot of really good, strong pieces in this room.
17:27Oh my gosh.
17:28It looks so good.
17:29You don't even need a bra.
17:30Thank God.
17:30There's not even any adjustments.
17:33I'm surprised that the skirt has so much flair from all the Polaroids.
17:38The Polaroids just made its own shape and I love it.
17:43I was thinking dark eye, but not smokey eyes.
17:46What do you think about it?
17:47Silver and then a little tiny blue like this on the bottom.
17:51Look at that.
17:52Just silver on top and a little blue.
17:53I think that's awesome.
17:55So I want to do like my lip, but like a bubble gum lip.
17:58I think I feel you.
18:00This is called posh pink.
18:01Yeah.
18:02Thank you so much.
18:03I was thinking like a very dramatic smokey eye.
18:06You know what would be amazing with her eye is that we extend it a little bit.
18:11Okay.
18:12And now we're taking her to the future.
18:16Welcome to the Sally Beauty Studio.
18:18What can we do for you today?
18:20Blunt pony.
18:21And I think that would look really strong and fierce.
18:23I'm into that.
18:23Okay, great.
18:24We'll make it happen.
18:25Awesome.
18:26My pleasure.
18:26Have fun.
18:27Do you want something sharp and tight?
18:29Did you want to just back?
18:31I think so.
18:32I hear you.
18:32Yeah.
18:32Yeah.
18:33I think back is good.
18:33Okay.
18:34Thank you so much.
18:34No problem.
18:35I'm thinking of what look like very futuristic like back straight.
18:39All right.
18:40We will take care of that.
18:40High five.
18:41Bye.
18:45Designers and models, we're going down to the runway everyone.
18:49Follow me, please.
18:50Let's go, go, go, go, go.
18:52Don't forget me.
18:54How could we forget you, Marlene?
18:56Our girls look amazing.
18:58They do.
18:58I agree.
18:59Okay.
19:01We did it.
19:14Hello, everybody.
19:15Hi.
19:16Welcome to the runway.
19:17As you know in fashion one day you're in and the next day you're out.
19:22Jake had to leave for personal reasons and we're very sad to see him go.
19:26There are nine of you here and after tonight there will be eight.
19:30This was another unconventional challenge.
19:33You were to take outdated technology and create modern fashionable looks.
19:38You had one day the material from your dumpster dive to put your looks together.
19:43All right.
19:44Let's say hello to our judges.
19:46First, we have creative director of Brooks Brothers Women fashion designer Zach Posen.
19:51Hello, my dears.
19:52Hi.
19:53Creative director for Mariclara Magazine Nina Garcia.
19:56Hello.
19:57Hi.
19:59Actress Paula Patton.
20:01Hi, everyone.
20:02And editor-in-chief of Mariclara Magazine and Fallen Wider.
20:07Hi again, guys.
20:08Also, we have Tim Gunn here for the runway show.
20:10And as you know, he is your mentor and will not be judging your looks.
20:14That said, if at some point during the competition he disagrees with the judges,
20:18he can use his one safe to bring that designer back to the competition.
20:22We also have an anonymous runway show, which means we the judges do not know which designer created which look.
20:28All right.
20:29Let's start the show.
20:37I am extremely happy.
20:40It's looking very well made.
20:42It's looking sculptural.
20:43I like to push the envelope.
20:47That's like art and fashion.
20:48That's couture.
20:50It's looking beautiful overall.
20:51I think I might win this one.
20:59I feel like it's different and unique.
21:01I think it's fashion-forward as well.
21:03I think it's wearable.
21:05Definitely a winner.
21:06I'm glad that I incorporated the fringe shoulder.
21:10I'm praying all the way down to the end and all the way back that please just don't let it
21:14come apart.
21:21As much as I would like to have made like the coolest dress ever, I feel comfortable with what I
21:26made.
21:28I love the top.
21:29I think it looks like an actual print from a distance.
21:32Hopefully I'll be fine.
21:34You pulled it out.
21:35I'm burnt out, but I'm stoked.
21:45It's like my aesthetic.
21:47It's sexy and she almost looks like a creature.
21:50Like it does not look like it came out of the garbage anymore.
21:53I think she looks fierce.
21:54That's what matters.
21:55It's such a strong piece that it could definitely be in the top.
22:06I'm feeling really good.
22:08I created something that's wearable.
22:12There's a bunch of those things on there that if it falls off, you can't even tap.
22:16I'm just hoping that nothing falls off.
22:19Not one mouse pad, not one wire.
22:21Like I need it all to stay in place.
22:31Holy .
22:32I am so proud of myself.
22:34I use materials that nobody else used.
22:37It looks like embroidery.
22:38It looks completely different than everybody else.
22:41And you could just see the detail and the time that I spent on it.
22:45Oh, it's cute.
22:52Having the opportunity to create something gothic and bold just been awesome.
22:59I love her winged shoulders.
23:01I like it.
23:02She kind of looks like it's a nightmare.
23:03Someone evil.
23:05Yeah.
23:16I've never made anything like this before.
23:19I've never pushed the sexy envelope.
23:22I think that the dress expresses a different side of me.
23:26I'm very happy that it came together.
23:28Well done, Joseph.
23:29I think that I've sent something quite beautiful down the runway.
23:39Even if the judges decide to send me home for this piece, I won't even be upset because I love
23:45it.
23:45It's fun and it's funky.
23:47I'm so proud of this one.
23:49Overall, just making my own print on a Polaroid is so amazing.
23:59First of all, I have to say this was a spectacular runway show today.
24:03Awesome.
24:03It really was.
24:05If I call your name, please step forward.
24:08Merlene, please step forward.
24:11Laurie, please step forward.
24:15Candice, please step forward.
24:18If I've called your name, congratulations.
24:20Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round.
24:23You can leave the runway.
24:30The rest of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
24:34One of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out.
24:46Okay, Edmund, tell us about your look and the materials that you used.
24:52For my look, I started out with computer mouse pads to create this fringe effect.
24:57I took a bunch of computer keyboards and smashed all of the keys out, reversed them and added them up
25:04near the top area.
25:05For the back part here, these are wires from a radio or something.
25:11There was an old VHS camcorder, so I took the bag and I created a clutch for her from the
25:18interior of it.
25:19Yeah, that's my look.
25:20I like this a lot.
25:22It has a lot of interesting detail in the front.
25:25I think the fringe is very current.
25:28I like the keyboard detail.
25:32So it does feel futuristic, but at the same time current.
25:37I liked it a lot.
25:38Well, thank you.
25:38Gave it a high score.
25:39I love this look too.
25:41I think that she looks very fashion-forward.
25:43She looks very modern.
25:44She looks very sexy, but yet sophisticated.
25:47Great job.
25:49The first thing I thought when I saw it was I'd wear this.
25:51And I thought what was really unique is that it's unconventional material, but it seemed like a wearable material.
25:56So I thought it was really well done.
25:59I think you did wonderful on this challenge.
26:02I love this mosaic and I love that you didn't do it as an all-over and that you played
26:05with dimension.
26:07I also really appreciate that you made it an accessory today.
26:10Yes, thank you.
26:11You know, it's always good to push yourself.
26:12Awesome, thank you.
26:14Well done.
26:14This dress feels like it came right off the pages of Mary Claire magazine.
26:17Wow.
26:18And you know, it's sexy, but yet it's short but not too short and it's got a plunging neckline without
26:23feeling cheap.
26:24It has a real modernity to it that I really value and love.
26:29Great job, Edmund.
26:32Joseph, tell us about your look and the materials that you used.
26:36So I started with a muslin base that I painted and then I applied wire around the front center.
26:43And then I used mouse pads and wire to cover to create a retro mod kind of idea.
26:50And then I used the wires as the straps.
26:52You know what?
26:53I don't think this was the most creative use of the resources.
26:58When I compare you to the rest of the people that are here, I see some fantasy.
27:03I see them using all these materials in very interesting ways.
27:08And I think you did something very safe.
27:11Okay.
27:12Joseph, I was not too impressed with this look, I have to say.
27:15I didn't feel this was as strong as some of the others.
27:18Sure.
27:18It's a little bit weird on the bottom.
27:20The cords there in the placement.
27:22Yeah.
27:22Center front is here.
27:24Yeah.
27:25Joseph, I liked your use of color.
27:27I thought that it was a really good idea to put the blue in the middle and then the black
27:30on the sides.
27:31Give it a slimming look.
27:33But it did seem a bit stiff.
27:36But I think it was a good effort.
27:38It just is not a fashion forward dress for me.
27:41Especially the back.
27:42Would you mind turning around?
27:43It's a very conventional shape and style with spaghetti straps.
27:47And I also think that the use of the mouse pad is very bulky.
27:50So it doesn't look flattering.
27:51It's not something that I look at and say, oh, I can't wait to wear that.
27:56Thank you, Joseph.
27:57Mm-hmm.
27:59Swapnil, tell us about your look and the materials that you used.
28:02I wanted to work with movement.
28:03And I wanted to take the wires and make them whimsical.
28:07It would take you in a world of fantasy and dreaming.
28:10So obviously I thought of doing something sculptural to show the rigidity of the wire as well as the fluidity
28:16of the wire.
28:16Yeah.
28:17That's it.
28:18What is the skirt made out of?
28:20That's muslin.
28:22I have mixed feelings.
28:24I like the top part of it.
28:25You see her boobies peeking through a little bit.
28:28It's a hint.
28:29I just don't love it from the waist down.
28:31You know, it really looks like when you go behind the TV and there's this whole bunch of cables and
28:36whatever, and they're just kind of knotted up together.
28:40It's a little messy.
28:41The bottom falls short.
28:43Yeah.
28:43It looks really childish and haphazard, and it doesn't look as polished.
28:48I expected so much more from you.
28:50This is a huge disappointment.
28:52This is the challenge that you should have swept everybody off that runway, and it should go back in the
28:58garbage.
28:59Thank you, Swapnil.
29:02Ashley, tell us about your look and the materials that you use.
29:05The first thing I grabbed was a bucket full of Polaroid pictures, and when I got back into the workroom,
29:11the first thing I did was start breaking all the Polaroids out of their shell.
29:15And I noticed that the chemicals that were inside started bleeding, so I wanted to create some type of cocktail
29:22dress or fun dress with it.
29:24So creative.
29:26A dress made out of memories.
29:29Yes.
29:30I love this dress.
29:31I love the shine.
29:32I love the effect that the Smash Polaroids make as a fabric.
29:37I love the cutout.
29:39I love the length.
29:40I love that it's, yes, futuristic, but it also could be in the present.
29:47It is so fun, flirty, and sexy at the same time.
29:50And it fits perfect.
29:53The whole creative process today for you really worked.
29:57You know, I like that you got inventive.
29:59I happen to love a Smash Polaroid and those chemicals mixing.
30:03It's Insta-ready.
30:04And just hearing your process, that's a designer.
30:07Oh, you should be so proud.
30:09It's an absolutely magnificent dress.
30:12And the pockets were an amazing surprise at the end.
30:15I'm quite amazed that you did this in a day, especially.
30:18And the risk you took to smash up all the Polaroid pictures and that time that you must have spent
30:22to make that investment in that.
30:24It's really special.
30:25Kelly, tell us about your look and your materials.
30:28So I saw this like aluminum tubing and I went for that.
30:32So I tried to like mix it together and build sort of like a little futuristic fun textile.
30:39It was fun.
30:40I can't believe that this is tubing.
30:43I actually think that this dress someone could actually wear out.
30:47And no one would know that this is unconventional material.
30:50It is insane.
30:52Kelly, you created a beautiful textile.
30:55It looks polished.
30:56It looks clean.
30:57It looks wearable.
30:58It just hit all the right notes today.
31:00Your style is getting more and more refined and almost coming into its own.
31:05And I think it's a beautiful thing to watch.
31:07That means so much.
31:09I think this dress is like a suit of armor, brave and bold.
31:14And I could, no, I wrote down, what is it made of?
31:16I had no idea what you've taken from that dumpster to create that really magnificent texture.
31:21The fabric really transports you to the future, but the future is now.
31:25And I am glad you listened about editing.
31:29I did.
31:30I think this is a terrific dress.
31:32Thank you very much.
31:34Thanks.
31:34Thank you, Kelly.
31:35Thanks so much.
31:37Lindsay.
31:38Lindsay, tell us about your look and your materials.
31:41I used flatter keys to create a texture for the top.
31:45I used the inside of a CD case, like CD holders, to create the skirt.
31:49And I did some layering and also some pleating in it to give it a little bit of, like, vibrancy
31:54and movement.
31:56To be honest with you, this was not my favorite.
31:59Okay.
31:59I could tell those were the CD covers.
32:01They kind of looked like tissue, like Kleenexes patched together.
32:05I understand you smashed the keyboard, but I could also see that it was very evident, the materials that you
32:11used.
32:12I don't see much imagination here.
32:14I can understand what you're saying.
32:15You know, it's almost like you need some Swapnil juice or mojo a little bit in there.
32:20Swapnil juice sounds awesome.
32:22I don't even want to imagine that.
32:25Don't, sorry.
32:26You need some Swapnil juju.
32:28No, I like Swapnil juice.
32:30You should trademark that Swapnil.
32:33I didn't like this either, I have to tell you.
32:35Okay.
32:36It kind of is frumpy dumpy.
32:38It's just very boring.
32:43Thank you, Lindsay.
32:45Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
32:48Now we're going to take a closer look at your designs, have a little chat, and then I'll bring you
32:52back in a little bit.
32:53You can leave the runway.
33:04The winner of Project Runway will receive $100,000 to launch their line.
33:08A celebrity cruises modern luxury vacation for two to almost anywhere in the world.
33:12A year's supply of Sally Beauty products and the opportunity to consult with Sally Beauty to create a limited edition
33:19finger paints nail color collection.
33:21Travel in hotel accommodations to inspiring destinations around the world from Best Western International.
33:26A 2015 Lexus RC 350.
33:31From Mary Kay, an entire year's worth of beauty products for their fashion shows and professional makeup artist services for
33:36their debut show.
33:37A complete sewing and crafting studio from Brothers Sewing & Embroidery.
33:41And the winning designer and model will receive a fashion spread in Mary Claire magazine.
33:48Hi, Tim.
33:49Hello, Heidi and judges.
33:50How is everyone?
33:51Hi.
33:51Hello, ladies.
33:53Shall we begin with Owe wearing Ashley?
33:55Yes.
33:56I just want to see close up.
33:58Oh, I love this dress.
34:00It's so inventive.
34:01It's a piece of art.
34:02This is beautiful.
34:04It really is.
34:05Look at them.
34:06That must have been fun.
34:07So that was a lot of work because she had to squish them all and kind of move.
34:11Well, when she started squishing, she realized the potential that could be realized.
34:16And it's phenomenal.
34:17I mean, she's good.
34:18She's good.
34:22Christina's wearing Kelly.
34:23This is so cool.
34:24I love this.
34:25Oh, I really wanted to touch this.
34:27You know what?
34:27It feels really nice.
34:29I was nervous that it would feel really harsh, but it doesn't.
34:32Even looking at it up close, I cannot figure out how she did it.
34:36It is so well made looking.
34:38Yeah.
34:38It's really fabulous.
34:40I would actually wear this out.
34:41I really would.
34:42You'd look good.
34:42You wouldn't be able to sit down.
34:44I don't care.
34:45That's okay.
34:46I'm standing, sipping champagne.
34:48Bravo.
34:49I love this.
34:51Spectacular.
34:54And we have Zorana wearing Edmund.
34:57Unfortunately, yes, this is falling apart a little bit.
35:00And the more up close it gets, it kind of feels a little slapped together.
35:04Can I see the back though?
35:05Because that back is really beautiful.
35:08The back is so special.
35:09Spectacular.
35:09I mean, it really is.
35:10Spectacular.
35:11Yeah.
35:11Magnificent.
35:12I really love that back.
35:13It's fabulous.
35:14He has great imagination.
35:16He created something really nice.
35:20Lelina's wearing Joe.
35:23This to me was a bit boring.
35:25It's not bad, but unconventional material.
35:27You can do whatever you want and you make a boring scuba dress.
35:30I think it's pretty clumsy.
35:32Also a little tardy.
35:34It's just not creative enough.
35:36And this is a challenge about creativity.
35:41Lindsay also didn't give us a lot of oomph.
35:43She made this old-fashioned dress that also, to me, has no imagination.
35:48Ugh.
35:48This to me is the worst.
35:50After you said the whole shower thing, I can't get over the bathroom, the tiles, the shower curtain.
35:56No, I don't like this.
35:58Computer says no.
36:00Nein.
36:03And we have Imani wearing swap mill.
36:07This up here is good.
36:08Yeah.
36:09This is a mess.
36:10Right.
36:10From the waist down, it's a mess.
36:12That it's just knotted and tied in the back.
36:14I mean, if this wasn't the unconventional materials challenge, I like actually what he did to this muzzle in here.
36:19It's just, you know, we want to see the unconventional material.
36:22He used to push himself.
36:23Yeah.
36:23He gave up.
36:24It really looks slapped together on the bottom.
36:26It is.
36:26And I don't know why.
36:28There was plenty of time.
36:32Thank you so much, judges.
36:34Bye.
36:34Thank you, Tim.
36:35Okay, so we've made our decision.
36:40Let's bring them back out.
36:44Designers, the six of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
36:48One of you will be named the winner.
36:50And one of you will be out.
36:53Ashley, your dress was stunning.
36:55And who knew that these photos could be manipulated like that?
36:59Appreciate it.
37:02Kelly, we love what you did with the tubing.
37:04You showed a more sophisticated side to yourself.
37:09Edmund, your dress was chic and beautiful from every angle.
37:19Kelly, congratulations.
37:20You are the winner of this challenge.
37:23Thank you so much.
37:25Thank you so much.
37:28Coming into this competition, I just didn't know where I stand being like pretty much self-taught.
37:32And I just feel so good and I'm like so grateful to even be here.
37:36It's a lot different than working at the deli at home.
37:38I can't tell you that much.
37:41Kelly, you also have immunity for the next challenge and cannot be eliminated.
37:44Awesome.
37:45You're in.
37:45You can leave the runway.
37:46Thank you, guys.
37:47Good luck, guys.
37:51I won!
37:52Woo!
37:55I won.
37:58Did you cry?
37:59Yeah.
38:00And you're still going to cry.
38:03I cannot believe I made this with my little hands and my burnt finger and I feel so good about
38:10it.
38:13Ashley, Edmund, you're both in.
38:15You can leave the runway.
38:24Joseph, your look was boring and uninspired, especially for an unconventional materials challenge.
38:33Lindsay, we were hoping for so much more from you.
38:38Swap now.
38:39It did not feel like you worked up to your potential.
38:42It's disappointing.
38:46Swap now.
38:50You're in.
38:50You can leave the runway.
38:59Lindsay, Joseph, one of you will be out.
39:07Joseph.
39:13I'm sorry, you're out.
39:18You're in.
39:19You're in.
39:19You're in.
39:19You can leave the runway.
39:20Thank you so much.
39:27Joseph.
39:35Bye, guys.
39:37Hearing Heidi call my name is a surprise.
39:38Do I think mine was the worst look down the runway?
39:41No.
39:41I don't think that I deserve to go, but I don't think that I necessarily deserve to stay either.
39:47Is that it?
39:49No, I'm going.
39:50Oh.
39:52That's cool.
39:53Aw.
39:54Project Runway is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
39:58It is a life-altering experience that forever will change me.
40:03You know, it makes me really happy and proud that I've been here.
40:06Joe, was it a bad look?
40:08No.
40:09No, of course not.
40:10I don't believe that.
40:10It's a matter of comparison to everyone else.
40:13Yeah.
40:13So I have to send you the work.
40:14No, of course.
40:15Absolutely.
40:16Thank you so much.
40:17I'm sad to go.
40:19I'm sad to go.
40:20I would have loved to have shown at Fashion Week,
40:21but when it's your time, it's your time.
40:24One door closes and another one opens,
40:26and I'm excited about the next chapter.
