00:30Hey guys, welcome back, this is your host, Fendergamer, and today's video, I'm going to be doing yet another anime review.
00:44Alright, now this is a very different anime to go into, and let me clear, it's not really all that Cyberpunk guys would expect from, you know, the description and the premise.
00:59It's more like a dystopian western than Cyberpunk, which is really interesting given the story and the themes of the show.
01:08Now this is not your conventional type of storytelling either, the show starts off with a very trippy, almost dreamlike sequence of your main character, and it's very vague in fact.
01:20There's almost no dialogue throughout the four first episodes, maybe there's like one line of dialogue.
01:26It takes a while to get into the story, because it's not really paced well, meaning like in like the first or third of the whole story, it actually focuses on a side character.
01:38For a bit before going back to focusing on the main that the story is centered on, right, which brings us to the characters, okay, you have the main guy, Ishii, he is the one who we see at the beginning of the show, with a general dialogue, but you get a sort of like a brief, dreamlike sequence of his background.
01:58Not a lot of explanation, not a lot of explanation, very symbolic, very vague, right, and you see him, he's basically like a homeless bum, right, and he loses his limbs or whatever, you know, and he eventually gets technolized, and starts to think and such, and his personality, it's, I would say from the beginning, he was really unhinged.
02:23Like, always getting into a fight with somebody, and even getting knocked the fuck out, but then later on in the show, he's sort of like, he's more tamed, and more controlled, after having the technolized stuff with him.
02:38Then you have Ruan, which is the seer, she's like the little girl that you see shows up, um, with another character, named Yoshi, but she, she's sort of like, this psychic, where she could see stuff that happens to people in the future, and she could like, get visions of what happens to the city in the future, right, so she has, I guess, sort of like, a central, you know, thing of importance to the host.
03:07The whole city, because of her visions, can't really help, like, predict what's the outcome of people in the show, right, okay, so then you have, here we go, the doc, right, here we go, Kaneda, she is the one who, gave, is she, the technolized, I know, like, she sort of like, take him in, and taking care of him, and whatnot.
03:34There's a bit of hints to her being, um, having a, like, relationship with, he, she, like, there's hints of two of them being together, but, it's never really, like, focused, or, they never, like, went through them, it's just, like, there, you know, uh, it's pretty weird, because she shows up during the majority of the story, but, in the ending, she's not really there,
04:04at some point, at some point, that's what it feels like, okay, then you have, Onishi, he's the head of the Organo, and he's also another one of, um,
04:13the doc's clients, but she also does, um, you know, technolized, and, um, you know, stuff on him, because of his, knees, and whatnot, and, he's, like, a main figure, in this,
04:30whole thing going on in the city, because there are two different factions, and there's, like, this infight between them, and so, he's, like, a, a main figure, in that, and,
04:41um, and then, you have, Yoshi, he's a visitor, the one that I mentioned, and, that's, you see him hanging out with, the van, the sail, he's the one that, at the beginning of the show,
04:55where, you get to see it from his perspective, because he's an outsider, roaming through the city, and, the show focuses on him quite a bit, you know, for a while,
05:06before it moves back to the main guy that the show's, actually, about, and, it's, it's pretty weird, uh, his, uh, and, you know, his perspective is used to dive in,
05:18into the whole world, here, right, but it's also the weakest part of the whole, um, show, because of the pacing, you know, and,
05:29I feel like I've done a bit better with his stuff, um, right, so, outside of that, you have, like, um, these other supporting characters that you see show up throughout the show,
05:41you know, they can't really get much of importance to them, they show up here and there, and then, there's, these things called shapes,
05:46okay, and this is an interesting thing here, because the shapes, as you see in some of the posters,
05:51these are basically, some of the city folks, or whatever, that joins these groups, and, they sort of get technolized, but, not in the same way that EC gets technolized,
06:03they get technolized in the sense that, their whole body is just replaced with, um, robotic, you know, cybernetic, um, parts, and only their head alone is human,
06:16and, and it's pretty damn weird, looking at it, right, but, so, that's pretty much the characters that you really need to know about,
06:25now, back into the story, it's actually pretty simple, but, if you want to break it down, you have this city called Lux,
06:34right, where everything is taking place in, it's a very dead, almost lifeless, like, place, where,
06:41the main guy, Ishii, among each other, characters, they engage in conflicts and struggles,
06:50in factions, over control, as the city, as, everything is descending into, war, collapse, and anarchy,
06:59right, it's like, fighting over, um, something that's, of no value, if you think about it, right,
07:07the, the organo is the professionals that controls the technolized, that I mentioned, you know, prosthetics,
07:14right, these are, like, the, the long-standing gang here, and,
07:20they are beef with the Salvation Union, a populist type group that opposes the organos, businesses,
07:26and tries to, you know, like, get rid of them, and such, then you have the Rakan, a group of individuals
07:33that uses technolized for their own personal game, right, so they're not really a part of either group,
07:38they're just, like, they're doing their own thing. Now, there's a lot of, like, you know, conflict
07:43and infighting here, and in the city, it pretty much feels like, you know, anything goes, like,
07:50a wild, wild west type scenario, you know, pretty much worthless and hopeless, right,
07:57like, if you're watching a western, that's more dark and surreal, and it actually works pretty well,
08:05in my opinion, like, you wouldn't know nothing to do with this place at all, it was a real place,
08:10and it has all these people you're fighting for the soul of Luxe, as if it's, it means something to them,
08:16you know, like, it gives them their purpose, right, so, the technolized prosthetics that's being
08:24explored, it seems to be, like, more bad than good, and so I progress, you learn more about it,
08:32which brings me to my main issue with this show, right, like, like I said, the pacing,
08:37that's, like, the main thing here, right, you know, it starts off kind of vague, symbolic,
08:42and not too much to, like, think of the imagery, then it cuts to the guy, Yoshi, during the first,
08:52third, he gets more screen time, and the MC, and the others, and you see his perspective,
08:59right, everything, you know, he does to serve the purpose of the story and progression,
09:03it is that the show is probably placed like that first, what, eight episodes, like,
09:10with him as a focus, you know, once it, he must order the picture, right, and instead focusing back
09:17on Ichi and, you know, the doctor and Onishi, it starts picking up quite a bit, in my opinion,
09:24right, and when you get into the third app, it's where you get, you know, the sort of, like,
09:30the big ending, when it's set to go out in a big way, with, you know, the groups going to war,
09:36the chaos, right, but it doesn't play out that way, you know, you have your battles, and it's just
09:44ends, right, it doesn't try to be bigger than what it is, sometimes, you know, you have a premise,
09:52and it's, like, you want to have, like, a big ending, it's not, it turned into that, it just, like,
09:57ends, right, and I can actually get that, because, you know, this anime, it's, it's focusing more on
10:04surrealism, and, you know, that type of stuff, and, like, psychological thriller, you know,
10:12it's not trying to be big and grand spectacle, you know, it's more grounded, in that sense,
10:19so, I actually like that, with the stories. Now, the, the animation here is actually pretty damn good,
10:28right, it's from Madhouse, right, if you guys know Madhouse, they're known for doing quite a bit of,
10:35um, animes, recently including the first season of One Punch Man, and their animation, you know,
10:41stuff here, it works very well, um, the scenery, the atmosphere, they're really good at creating that,
10:50right, like, if you look at this, it's an anime from 2003, and it still looks pretty good, as many
10:57because of the way how they use, um, the light in the animation, it gives it a much more, um,
11:04like, higher quality look to it, even though it's a dated anime, and, at the same time, also,
11:12the art style makes it look more dated, like, if you first watch this, you get the impression that
11:18this is a 90s anime, because of the art style, and the theme of it, right, and when you're looking
11:24more animation, and you're paying more attention to the details in animation, you're like, yeah,
11:30this is some, this looks more recent, it's actually pretty impressive work they do here, right,
11:37the voice acting is pretty good, um, I mean, sometimes it works, like, with the main character,
11:44he is a pretty good voice actor, but a lot of these characters, their voice acting wasn't really all
11:49that good, um, sometimes it didn't land at all, um, yeah, so, with this one, I think you can pretty
11:58much go either way if you wanted to, you know, just go with the dub, um, or if you just don't like
12:04reading, you can take this, this, um, version, but, it's not really good voice acting, per se,
12:13now, I will give you my past, because, 2003 anime dubs, wasn't really good back then,
12:21as opposed to, say, nowadays weather is a higher standard for dubbing enemies,
12:26but, I'll just point out to you that the dub isn't, the voice acting isn't really,
12:32there, it's, like, painfully average, to, um, describe it, kind of, the soundtrack,
12:39this is, like, more the main highlight of the anime, other than the animation,
12:45and the soundtrack is where you get the whole vibe, and the whole atmosphere kicks in, right,
12:53it's, you get, like, a sort of, like, electronic beat-in, and you get sort of, like, a western,
13:00or, like, you know, like, themes in between it, you know, the show, it really plays up,
13:06that, like, it's not, all the way cyberpunk, as, some websites like to describe it as a cyberpunk,
13:13it's, it actually feels more western, the soundtrack, I actually like that, I like this sort of feel,
13:20and, that they went with, with the soundtrack, you know, it's pretty damn good, all right, so,
13:28um, overall here, this anime, technically, it's, I'd say it's, it's a good anime,
13:36um, but it's not something I would just recommend to the average person, per se, because of the way
13:43it's told, and there's all, like, the mess, and the themes in the story, right, this is about, like,
13:49psychological trailer, that's not really something majority of people would be into,
13:53um, and it says it's also surrealism, right, you know, this is grounded anime, and, you know,
14:01I could see why this went under the radar for most people, especially the way how it, it tells the
14:07story, and then how it ends, yeah, this is definitely not something, um, for the average viewer, so I can
14:14get why people would not be into this, and, like, also see that's a reason why I wouldn't really
14:21recommend it to just about anyone, but, I would say, from my experience, it's good, you know,
14:27despite all the faults, you know, the pacing, and the over structure, and, you know, the force acting,
14:33there's quite a bit of faults, but, it's more positive than negative, you know, after watching
14:39it, and just letting it settle in, and thinking about the show, it, it's, it's a good one, from my
14:46perspective, right, so, yeah, guys, um, I pretty much sums up my review for Technolize, um, a good
14:52enemy, um, not for your average viewer, right, um, but let me know what you think in the comment section
