00:00I'm on my way, take it over, I'm here to stay, one day you'll be looking, don't tell me to stop, cause I'll be taking over today, I'm taking over this whole place, I'm on my way to outer space.
00:30This is North End Airport, it may be small, but typically handles a shining example of UK life. Its staff is made up of a wide range of cultures, genders and ages. For one of Borderline's younger and more excitable agents, Clive Hassler, this is a particularly significant day.
00:51Do you know what day it is? It's my birthday. Welcome to the UK.
01:00Last year Tarek forgot my birthday.
01:14Last year Tarek forgot my birthday, but this year he said he'll remember it, so it's today, so it's going to be a big surprise.
01:21Did you hear? You didn't hear? It's my birthday.
01:31Thought you could hear.
01:32At Borderline, special announcements are the remit of Chief Inspector Linda Proctor, so Agent Hassler may be in look, as she's just called the team in for a briefing.
01:41Over the years I've worked here, I've been privileged to work with some wonderful people.
01:49You're all lovely people, but today is about one very special person.
01:55Yeah.
01:56Over the weekend, one of North End's best mechanics, Charles Headley, died.
02:02He was 63.
02:11Oh, my gosh. Very good. You almost got me.
02:15Okay, I'm on, guys.
02:17Clive, what are you doing?
02:21Are you being serious?
02:26Sit down.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Yeah.
02:27Yeah.
02:27Yeah.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Yeah.
02:28Yeah.
02:29Yeah.
02:29Yeah.
02:30Yeah.
02:31Yeah.
02:33Charles, man, he was such a sweet guy.
02:38Yeah, he always had a big smile and, yeah.
02:42Wow, sounds like you guys are really close.
02:44Shut up, Tarek, were you guys friends?
02:46Yeah, Charles Headley was the best.
02:49I have no idea who Charles Headley is.
02:52I don't know half the people that work here.
02:54Um, you know, because I just think about myself half the time.
02:58I mean, 63 years young.
03:01I mean, two more years and he could have enjoyed his pension.
03:05Mm-hmm.
03:07I mean, why would you not hold on for that?
03:08I mean, just stay alive that little bit longer and you're there, man.
03:15You're there.
03:16Oh, I don't see something now.
03:19That's okay.
03:20Okay.
03:20Oh.
03:21Any day that, uh, you lose a co-worker or a friend is a tragedy.
03:30But let's not get caught up in his death today.
03:40Let's remember Charles Headley.
03:42Today's day.
03:43Headley.
03:45The man.
03:47Tomorrow.
03:49Or the next day.
03:51Or any other day.
03:53As Agent Hustler demonstrates, finding the right words in a situation like this can be tricky.
03:59But it's Agent Grant Brodie who's taken today's news the hardest.
04:03Uh, I don't think we're supposed to be drinking at work, are we?
04:06Ah, not normally, no.
04:07But, uh, where I come from, when a man dies, uh, first thing you do is you take a drink, send him on his way.
04:16So, to Charles.
04:18Oh, aye.
04:29Get that down, you.
04:30Oh, Grant, I can't.
04:31Aye, to Charles.
04:32No, I don't really think.
04:32No, it's out of respect.
04:33Okay.
04:34It's just the rules.
04:35Aye.
04:38Ah, you see, that's better, eh?
04:40Mm, sure.
04:41Yeah, you know what's even better is, er, sharing a wee memory.
04:44Oh, right.
04:45Er, Charles had such a lovely,
04:47smile.
04:48Oh, come on, Andy.
04:49No, I'm talking about a real memory, you know?
04:51Like, I mean, three years ago, Christmas party, you know, he's out there, he's on the runway,
04:55he's got his trousers at his ankles.
04:58For Agent Church, remembering this particular colleague is challenging.
05:01Her approach to this problem is simply to pretend they weren't that close.
05:07He was a mechanic.
05:08He worked out there and I work up here, so I guess we just didn't really see each other.
05:12What was it?
05:12What was it that he called you again?
05:13It was, eh, Davey.
05:15Dandy, Dandy, Andy, that was, Dandy, Andy, that's brilliant.
05:19Dandy, Andy.
05:20I don't think he called me Dandy, Andy.
05:22He, he, he thought the world of you.
05:25Grant, come on, you're trying to make me feel guilty.
05:30Oh, come on, Grant, that's...
05:32No, listen, if you cannae share a memory, then you cannae share a drink.
05:38No.
05:38Next, please.
05:45It's my birthday.
05:47Yeah.
05:54During a coffee break, Agent Mansoor is also trying to avoid admitting not knowing Charles
05:59Headley, whilst Agent Hassler is preoccupied with dropping subtle hints about today's personal
06:04significance.
06:05Big day today.
06:08Big day.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Poor Charles, eh?
06:13Yeah.
06:16Charles.
06:17I, I do remember Charles.
06:20Um, he, uh, helped me up once when I fell over, um, on the tarmac.
06:27And he just...
06:33Tired on top.
06:36Really hurt.
06:40Really hurt my knee.
06:43Charles.
06:46Such a surprise.
06:51Surprise.
06:52Did you hear Proctor's getting us all together late for a drink?
06:55You know, to commemorate today.
06:58Make it special for Charles.
07:00Yeah.
07:02Because he's dead.
07:04Today's unexpected news has affected everyone.
07:07Even the normally sunny Chief Inspector Proctor is in a reflective mood.
07:12It's funny when somebody dies, isn't it?
07:13It unsettles everybody.
07:15Makes you think, you know, what would happen if I drop dead right now?
07:18I'm like a heart attack or a stroke or embolism.
07:24It just, could just be spontaneous combustion.
07:31I don't really mind.
07:33With the atmosphere in the office still heavy, she decides to clear her head with some fresh air.
07:41Tough day, right guys?
07:43Why?
07:46Because Charles Headley died.
07:47What?
07:48Charles Headley died?
07:49Oh God, don't tell me you didn't know.
07:51Of course we know.
07:53That family to us, man.
07:55Oh, yeah.
07:57Of course.
07:58So, um, I wanted to invite you guys to a remembrance that we're having later for Charles.
08:05Hold on a second.
08:06You're inviting us to a remembrance of our boy?
08:10Suj, what was Charles like to me?
08:12A father.
08:13Like a father.
08:15Suj, what have I been doing all morning?
08:17Crying.
08:19Crying like a damn baby.
08:20Suj, who's given a eulogy at his funeral this Thursday?
08:24You.
08:24Me.
08:26Charles, man.
08:28You know what?
08:30He just had a real zest for life, man.
08:33That's probably why he got laid so much as well, isn't he?
08:35He's going to be missed, man.
08:36A lot of vulnerable women.
08:40Shouldn't you be putting this baggage on the plane?
08:42Yeah, in a minute.
08:43After this cigarette.
08:44For Charles.
08:46It seems that today's news has got everyone at the airport considering their future.
08:51Hey, yo, Suj, you all right, bro?
08:54Yeah, I'm not going to be working here forever.
08:56I've got plans, you know.
08:57I think, er, I think I'm a really, really funny person.
09:01So, I'm going to be, I'll do, like, stand-up comedy, I think.
09:06Because, er, I mean, it's very similar to baggage handling in a way.
09:10Oh, Charles, push me now, go on.
09:11It's just more people around if you do a stand-up comedy.
09:16You know, and you get to speak to more than one person all the time.
09:20Which is what I really want now.
09:21Did I push you?
09:22No.
09:23Are you sure?
09:24No, I don't.
09:24Having avoided admitting they don't know Charles Headley,
09:26agents Mansour and Church confide in each other,
09:29in a corridor, away from people who might judge them.
09:31Hey, do you...
09:33Not know who Charles Headley is?
09:35Not knowing who this guy is is driving me crazy.
09:38You know, I pride myself on being a good person.
09:44I can't picture his face.
09:45Call me Dandy Andy, so we must have talked or chatted or something, but...
09:48Dandy Andy.
09:50Oh, my God, maybe we flirted.
09:51What if I flirted with him?
09:53He was in his 60s.
09:54Right, okay, yeah, no, I wouldn't have done that.
09:57I'm a terrible person.
09:58We're terrible people.
09:59Right.
10:00We're assorted?
10:01Yeah, we're terrible people.
10:02Right, okay.
10:02We're terrible people.
10:05Meanwhile, Agent Brodie finds himself in a deeply philosophical mood.
10:09Isn't it funny how death just reminds us of life and how we should live out our lives,
10:16our dreams, our hopes.
10:21Yeah, everything to the fullest.
10:25I love life.
10:28I love it a lot.
10:28You be safe, my friend.
10:33Welcome to the UK.
10:35Next, please.
10:36It's, uh, it's my birthday.
10:43It's not yours.
10:45The unexpected death of their colleague, Charles Headley, has the agents paying their respects in
10:49their own unique ways.
10:51Some dig deep and try and evoke a memory of him, any memory at all.
10:55For Agent Hassler, the tragedy comes in another form, everyone forgetting his birthday.
11:01Outside, he tries to mask his frustration.
11:04That's cool.
11:05Lock the door.
11:05If I hear you, I'm going to punch you up.
11:07And so then she came over.
11:09With, it has to be said, somewhat limited success.
11:14And it went upstairs, and my bedroom's like two bedrooms away from my little brother's.
11:18And, um, all of a sudden, Clive.
11:25Okay, bye.
11:31Back inside, Agent Brodie has been called into Chief Inspector Proctor's office
11:35because of a serious breach of conduct.
11:38This is Proctor's chance to show her authority as a disciplinarian.
11:41I can't have you drinking at work, Grant.
11:45How did you know?
11:47I saw you having a beer at passport control.
11:50Well, it should have had in a Coke can.
11:52Yeah, that's not really the point I was trying to make.
11:55Charles always had had us in a Coke can.
11:57Yeah, that's because Charles was an alcoholic.
11:59Charles Headley was always jolly, always very jolly.
12:02Merry, even, perhaps.
12:05He was often, yeah, completely plastered at work.
12:12Just struggling with the news a wee bit, to be honest,
12:14where you lend a couple of drinks, just help knock the edge off, you know.
12:19I do understand, but just please not at work, okay?
12:22They didn't find his body for three days, you know.
12:26He died alone.
12:29I don't want to die alone.
12:32Dying alone.
12:37Sounds like bliss.
12:40Tell you what.
12:46Oh, I've got one here in my pocket, actually.
12:53To Charles.
12:54To Charles.
12:57Hey.
12:58I got some of the stuff that you wanted.
13:00Did you get the candles?
13:02Yeah.
13:02What have you got candles for?
13:03Oh, for the remembrance.
13:04I thought it would be a nice idea if you all lit a candle.
13:08What are these?
13:10Birthday candles.
13:10Yeah, birthday candles.
13:12Yeah.
13:13Well, why did you get birthday candles?
13:15In case there was a birthday cake.
13:19But it's a memorial service.
13:21Why would there be a birthday cake?
13:22I don't know.
13:23I don't know.
13:28My family are religious.
13:30So when they think about death, they have that to comfort them.
13:33But me, what comforts me, I just don't want to be forgotten.
13:37No one's going to remember a guy that stands passports.
13:39But DJ Merlin, they'll remember my hits like Rain, Between the Sheets, Between the Sheets is a banger.
13:46Brr-ch-ch, ah, ah, brr-ch-ch, ah, ah, brr-ch-ch, ah, ah.
13:51Music people can fuck too.
13:53With the memorial starting soon, Proctor takes a moment to herself and is immediately joined by Agent Hassler.
14:00With his birthday forgotten, he's feeling a little upset and turns to a rather destructive idea.
14:05I'm thinking about maybe starting to smoke.
14:09Oh, yeah?
14:10Why?
14:11Apparently, if you smoke, if you smoke them for long enough, then you start to really like them.
14:16Trust me, you don't want to start smoking.
14:17It's a mugs game.
14:19I started when I was 12.
14:21Can I just have one then?
14:23Well, why would you do that?
14:25Have you ever smoked a cigarette before?
14:26Yeah, of course.
14:28Were you sick?
14:29No.
14:31Sure?
14:32Yes.
14:33Do you want to go and ring your mum?
14:34No.
14:36Well, just go and ring her and see what she says.
14:38No, I just want one cigarette.
14:40I'll ring your mum.
14:42Please don't ring my mum.
14:44She'd be really cross.
14:45She doesn't need to know.
14:47Meanwhile, Agents Church and Mansour discuss appropriate ways to pay their respects at the memorial service for a man
14:53neither of them can actually remember.
14:56Let's just not go.
14:57No, we have to go.
15:00All right.
15:00That'd be way worse.
15:02Okay, we'll go and we'll just say nothing.
15:03Oh, yeah.
15:04Okay, that's, yeah, okay.
15:05Stare at our drinks?
15:06Yeah, stare into our drinks and say nothing.
15:07Okay.
15:08Practice?
15:08Yeah.
15:09Okay.
15:09You just looked at me.
15:12You just looked at me.
15:16No, I did not look at you.
15:17You looked at me.
15:18I really didn't look at you.
15:18How did you know that you broke the rules as well then?
15:21Oh, we should not be laughing at this.
15:22A man has died.
15:23No, that's true.
15:24Um, but just...
15:25Oh, now I've spilt my drink everywhere.
15:26Do you want another one?
15:28Just take that one.
15:29Where's that from?
15:29Just the bar.
15:31The memorial for Charles Headley is underway.
15:34First to speak are those who knew him best.
15:36The baggage handlers, straight-talking Mo Khan and aspiring stand-up comedian Sujan Stevens.
15:42Yeah, the thing about Charles is that he was always there for us.
15:45Everyone that knew him would say that, you know, he was a very reliable man.
15:49And this is one of my comedy bits.
15:51I do impressions of some Samuel L. Jackson.
15:58There's too many motherfucking snakes on this plane.
16:03That's from, uh, what's it? Snakes are, uh...
16:07I suppose he'll just be up there running through a field like a pony or something.
16:16He'll certainly be missed.
16:18Thank you, Suj. Thank you for those kind words about Charles.
16:22And now Mo from Baggage Reclaim would like to say something.
16:25Yeah, thank you.
16:27What can you say about a man like Charles Headley?
16:30He could fix your car. He could fix an aeroplane.
16:32He could fix you up with a lot of girls as well.
16:35And, bruv, trust me, when I say a lot of girls,
16:36I mean a lot of girls and not just normal ones, like...
16:39Yeah, yeah, okay, that's enough about girls.
16:41Okay, I'm almost finished.
16:43Listen, you all know what I think about Charles.
16:45But I think in this moment, we should hear from the person that he liked most.
16:50Dandy Andy, step up, babes.
16:53What?
16:53Yeah, just step up and talk about Charles, innit?
16:55Oh, come on.
16:56Say a few words. Oh, no, I don't think I...
16:58Yeah, come on, it's safe.
17:00Uh, no, no, thank you.
17:01Say a few words.
17:02It's fine. No, I don't think...
17:04No, I don't think it's fine.
17:07But I should say...
17:09Okay, fine. Look, I have no idea who Charles was.
17:13Who was?
17:15Look, I can't lie about it.
17:17I don't remember who he is.
17:19Um, I feel terrible about it.
17:22Sorry.
17:26Oh, you should be ashamed of yourself.
17:28Yeah, you should.
17:31Come on, Cuddy.
17:32How could you forget about Charles after he sent you all them love notes as well?
17:35I don't know.
17:36He...
17:36I'm sorry, what?
17:37He was the man who was sending me all those cards?
17:40Aye.
17:40Yes.
17:41Well, you...
17:42You mean the pervy old man who used to wink at me all the time?
17:44Yes, sir.
17:45Oh, Charles Headley, the sleazy old man.
17:48Yes, Charles from the disciplinary hearing.
17:50Oh, of course.
17:51Yeah, of course.
17:52Oh, I feel so, so much better.
17:54Well, he died.
17:55Yes.
17:56Um, aye.
17:57Well, uh, we should...
17:58We're here.
17:59We should raise a wee glass to him.
18:01Anyway, you know, respect for the dead.
18:04To Charles Headley, uh, man, um, uh, engineer, um, and alleged to express.
18:12I'm sorry, Andy.
18:13Eh, to Charles.
18:14To Charles.
18:14Charles.
18:15She got in trouble.
18:19Oh, that's great.
18:21Well, this has been wonderful.
18:22Has anyone got anything else that they'd like to add?
18:26We're gonna miss you, Charles.
18:31We're gonna miss you, Charles.
18:35We'll never forget you.
18:40Cause friends never forget.
18:44Friends never forget.
18:54They forgot my birthday.
18:56It's, it's my birthday.
18:59On the bright side, today's given Agent Brodie a new appreciation for life, as he's ventured
19:04out of the office, left his post unattended, and called his girlfriend Dasha, all while
19:09drinking his sixth beer.
19:10Hey, Dasha, it's, it's, it's me.
19:12Uh, well, I've had a, I had a little bit of a rough day, actually.
19:18Um, one of my mates died.
19:20Makes you think that you've got to live life to the fullest.
19:23I was thinking, maybe, like, next time we go out, maybe we could, we could go somewhere
19:29nicer than Nando's, like, um, I don't know, like a bell of pasta or something, you know.
19:37No, no, I've not had a drink.
19:39It's been a particularly sad day for Agent Hassler.
19:47Whilst everyone eventually remembered Charles, they all forgot Clive.
19:51Is it your birthday, Clive?
20:03Yeah, yeah, but, um, Charles dying made everyone forget.
20:10We did forget, but then that song you sang at the memorial was less than subtle.
20:15Happy birthday!
20:23We clubbed together and got you the...
20:25Oh, there's a card.
20:26Oh, no.
20:26Oh, you've got a shit.
20:28To our beloved teammate.
20:32Never forgotten.
20:37Guys.
20:42This is too much.
20:45It's been a difficult time at Borderline, but at the end of the day, life goes on for Agent
20:50Hassler, the team and everyone at North End Airport, except for Charles Headley.
20:55All that remains of him are treasured memories.
20:58So, in the end, I did remember Charles and he made me feel pretty uncomfortable.
21:04Also, I dug out some of the letters that he sent me.
21:07Um, you know, at first, I thought that they were cupcakes, but turns out, just a pair of tits.
21:16Rest in peace, creepy Charles.
21:21No doubt about it.
21:23I'm on my way.
21:25Take it over.
21:27I'm here to stay.
21:29One day you'll be looking.
21:31When did you come my way?
21:33Don't drop, don't tell me to stop.
21:35Cause I'll be taking over today.
21:37I'll take you over this little place.
21:39I'm on my head to outer space.
21:41Don't drop, don't tell me to stop.
21:43I'm on my head to outer space.
21:45Don't drop, don't tell me to stop.
