2025 Supercross WSX Australia 250 Race 1
Transcript
00:00And that's what it's all about from this point forward for the rest of the night.
00:07There are the riders in the gate all set to go.
00:1632nd board is up. The Gold Coast of Australia is known for its stunning beaches and incredible
00:21surf locations. Tonight it is where you will find the largest gathering of the best supercross
00:26racers on the planet. They are here for one reason. The quest to be crowned world champion.
00:32Drop the gate. Headed off to the first corner and Anstey's on the inside of the 99. Can he
00:40ride his night? He's not going to get the whole shot. As you see the rest of the field, Cody
00:47Shock coming through there, but Anstey is right up in the mix, Daniel. And that is how you
00:51back up what you did in qualifying in Super Bowl. This is a tone setting race for Enzo
00:58Lopes and a big opening lap for Max Anstey. Lopes out front of the number 16 riding for
01:03Rick Ware on the Yamaha. Chasing him is Max Anstey on the Team GSM machine.
01:10Different rhythms right there. Max gets that big triple. Enzo singled in. They come out
01:14the same. And here's the big test that it will be all night long.
01:17All through the woods. Here we go. Lopes gets through the great. Anstey gets through
01:20there even better. And Cody Shock and Shane McElrath do as well. McElrath squares up the
01:26next berm as they come over the finish line jump. McElrath inside. Here comes Anstey pushing
01:31on Lopes already. Inside. New leader. Yes. New leader here on the Gold Coast.
01:36And he didn't even wait. He didn't let for the race to settle down. Let Enzo Lopes build a
01:41little confidence. He says, no, I need it right now. I'm going to take it. That was aggressive.
01:45It's a great move by the points leader. Every race that we've had this year at an
01:50SX2 category event, Max Anstey has won every single one of them. Eight laps, 12 laps, main
01:58events, premium races. Doesn't matter. He's won everything. Maximum points all the way
02:03across the board for Max Anstey in 2025. And this is a big moment for Enzo Lopes too.
02:08You've been great in the Lopes all night long. Can you pull it right now? Anstey a little
02:12quicker in, a little quicker out. And now you've got Lopes looking up behind him on his
02:16teammate, Cody Schock. That's not a good sign. And if you're Max Anstey, that little gap
02:20that you've got allows you to take the lines that you want. Look at McElrath. Here comes McElrath,
02:24trying to make a move. But guess what? Cody Schock takes advantage of it on the 69. And he
02:31will be back in front of McElrath. And these are your top four in points. So seeing him up
02:36front is not surprising. But the order's a little bit different than we've seen this year.
02:40Shane McElrath has had a tough go as your defending champ. He had body issues at round one,
02:45bike issues at round two, but he looks better tonight. Keep an eye on the 43 back behind them,
02:51the red bike. That's Cullen Park, who just missed out on Super Bowl by what? A hundredth of a second,
02:56something like that. And here he is in fifth and closing. And the guy that he's been battling
03:02with all season long, Cole Thompson, is two spots back behind him. Maxime Desprez between the two.
03:08Here's McElrath looking inside. His Schock takes the spot away. And McElrath moves up into the top
03:13three. And I think we're seeing the passing spots on this track. It's after the whoops,
03:18after the finish, and in the first corner. Those are the 180s. Oh, look at Schock coming back up the
03:23inside. Cody Schock up the inside. McElrath trying to find a way to defend it. He gets a pretty good drive
03:31off the corner. Hugs to the inside. Great side-by-side battle, but Schock is a little quicker
03:36off the corner and into the wall jump. That was great defense by Cody Schock. Shane McElrath
03:41wanted to get him back with that right-handed 180. Schock gave him nowhere to go. But now,
03:44look, Cullen Park's joined the party. Yeah, as we said, all that fighting between McElrath
03:49and Schock has allowed Park to close right in.
04:01McElrath right along the top blocks as he blitzes through the woods. He was very quick
04:05through there. Yeah, and last lap he was closer, so he had the chance to make the pass.
04:09This lap he was a little further behind, but you saw Enzo Lopes having a little issue there,
04:14too, where Anstey is really starting to check on these guys in that section and route. We talk
04:18about the starts and the speed, but Anstey's been great. The whoops, too. We're seeing it now
04:22early. It's sprint race one.
04:27Shane McElrath, the reigning SX2 champion.
04:32Oh, McElrath way loose, and Park gets by. Park clips the top blocks, and that'll give McElrath
04:39a chance to come back, but he can't get a jump through that rhythm lane, and Cullen Park moves
04:44himself up to fourth, and the reigning champ slips back another spot of frustration.
04:50And that's how quick things can change. Remember, two laps ago, he's playing offense. He's looking
04:54for a way around Schock. One mistake turns to two, and the next thing you know, you're on defense,
04:58and then the big mistake lets Cullen Park by, and now for Cullen, you've got a free run at Cody Schock.
05:03What can you do with a little open track?
05:05Well, and it also continues the problems for Shane McElrath, who had physical issues at the opener,
05:11Argentina, mechanical issues in Vancouver, and today, I don't know, what would you call it,
05:17just riding issues?
05:19Yeah, little mistake. I mean, one turns to two, and that happens as a racer. When you make a
05:23bobble, it's hard to recover, get back on pace, and then when you make the second one, you start
05:28second-guessing. That leads to a third mistake, and it's really hard to recover. The rider who's
05:33making no mistakes is Max Anstey. This is why that pass on lap one was so important. He's been
05:38able to ride somewhat free since then, and if he would have settled into Lopes' pace, this could
05:43be a completely different race, but he did what he needed to do early.
05:46Max Anstey was crowned champion of the SX2 category in 2023. He is well on his way to
05:53his 16th race win in SX2 competition in his career. McElrath sitting here in fifth. This
06:03one winding down quickly, scheduled for eight laps, 10 points up for grabs, and even though
06:09Max had issues in qualifying and Super Bowl, he's looking to be perfect still in race competition.
06:15And I got to point out, the track looks good compared to what we saw in qualifying. They've
06:20got some moisture in, they worked it in, but it's still slick, and it might even be a tougher
06:24type of slick because that little bit of water they put on, it might take a race before it
06:29really works itself in. So you see these mistakes? These are coming from maybe a little bit of a
06:33false impression on what that dirt looks like and what it really feels like. Here's one of the
06:37spots Anstey's so good as he rips across the top of the woods. Yeah, it's the entry speed. I mean,
06:43when you come in that committed, that trusting, that fast, you just carry your way out. We saw
06:48Lopes making a little mistake here and there, and that's all from the entry speed. And Max,
06:52that confidence, we've seen it from A to Z. Everything he's doing this year is just on
06:56another level. And the best battle on the racetrack is coming up right here. It's a fight for third
07:01between the 69 and the Rick Ware Racing Arby's back machines of Cody Shock, and closing in on
07:07as fast is the Moto Concepts Racing entry, the number 43 of Cullen Park, as we are on the final
07:13lap here in the opening race of the day at the Australian GP. We've been talking all week. Cullen
07:19Park's riding has not matched the results, but it's been from issues outside of his control. A big
07:25second place finish in the first race of the year, and then issue after issue after issue. So this is a
07:29big bounce back and a rebound for Cullen Park. Here's Max charging at you once again.
07:35To the finish line jump, and Max Anstey gets career race victory number 16, with two more
07:45possibly getting added to that total here tonight, as we get set for race two and three in a little bit,
07:52della SX2 competition. Yeah, X-2 Enlighten's it to CSUN.
08:12Thanks so much for watching.
