00:00For them. Now Shane McElrath guys has had trouble with his motorcycle. His primary bike had engine
00:06issues earlier. They were trying to get the backup going. That's having electrical issues. You can see
00:11he would have been in gate five. All right here we go getting close. You see the countdown. All
00:19week these racers have been grinding in their brains. Twisting over what they could have done
00:23differently in Buenos Aires at the season opener. Only the two winners walked away satisfied with
00:28their performance. But even they know that Vancouver presents a whole different set of challenges.
00:33If they want to be crowned world champ at the end of the season. Challenge number one in
00:38Canada is coming up. Challenge number one. Get the gate drop.
00:54Here we go into the first corner. Corpe Corner.
01:03Through Corpe Corner and coming straight at you. It's 99 of Anstey right out front.
01:07The man who's leading the points was perfect in Argentina and he's starting off great here
01:11tonight Jeff. Yeah Anstey is so fired up. That looks like Kyle Peters and Robbie Wageman second
01:16and third. Wageman right behind them there. Did not have a great night in Argentina Daniel
01:22but Wageman looking pretty good here early on. Yeah great start. Get up with that lead
01:26pack where the environment is absolutely different. And Jeff how about the track. This is the best
01:32we've seen it since we arrived on Thursday. Well this is the best that it's going to be all
01:36night long lap one of the SX2. Shane McElrath back in seventh. They got the quad lock Honda
01:44running. Got him on the gate. Mid-pack start. It's going to take more than that to beat the
01:50number 99 of Max Anstey. Anstey with a great run through the Wolves. There's the 69 of Cody
01:55Shock coming up through the field quickly. And there's the number one of McElrath and he's got
02:00a big push up the inside. That's the 43 of Cullen Park. And you can see McElrath got up into the
02:05top block. Oh he smacked that thing. He has to be so aggressive on this opening lap to make the
02:09moves needed to have a shot at this thing. And thinking back to Buenos Aires it was the same
02:13thing. A bad start in race one. Puts it back. He was able to overcome that. Get himself up to
02:18second overall. But this is not what you want to do early in the night. Early in the
02:22championship. He's going to have to have a great couple laps here to get up with that
02:25front group. Ten points up for grabs if you can win race number one which is just an
02:30eight lap sprint race Jeff. So McElrath back in eight.
02:35One of the riders directly in front of him is Cullen Park. Motor Concepts Honda the number
02:3943. He was so good at round one. He did not get the start he needed right now. He's already
02:46made some moves. He's up to sixth as Peters goes back to seventh. Keep an eye on the 43 top
02:52of your screen there. The white bike. He is going to the speed he has. He has the ability
02:58to work himself onto a putting position in this race one. We're almost halfway through this
03:03one. Park sits back in sixth. 24 year old rider out of Florida.
03:08How about Cody Shock in second. Think back to a week ago. A bad race one. A better race
03:13two. And then a phenomenal race three in a four rider battle that he overcame all the competition.
03:19And now he gets up front and a chance to get up there. But look at Hicks and Lopes running
03:22three four.
03:23Yeah, I was going to say, how about all you EV lovers out there? The Stark, Michael Hicks,
03:27new team to World Supercross. First time the Stark electric bike is competing at this level.
03:34And Hicks has been fantastic. He showed some real flashes of brilliance. And the riders say
03:40that riding against the electric Stark is totally different.
03:43Oh, he's got the inside is Lopes on the 16. And he's going to make the move and get past
03:48Hicks.
03:49Because you don't hear the bike. And here's a crowd favorite, the number two of Cole Thompson.
03:54Thompson, the Canadian rider, having a good run. Right now sits in fifth.
04:00Everybody chasing Anstey as we're past the halfway point here in SX2 race number one.
04:05Yeah, Anstey's up now 2.7 over Cody Shock with that free track while the battle happens behind him.
04:12That was a great move by Lopes, who also had one of the three main events last week go his
04:16way. So for Shock and for Lopes, this is where you want to be on the Rick Ware racing machines.
04:21But for Park, for Thompson, you've got to get around Hicks right now. You've got to get up
04:26to those top three.
04:26Guys, early on during qualifying, just qualifying, we saw how run it out these jump faces got.
04:32How long will it take during actual racing, Jeff, before the faces get wiped out with runs?
04:37Oh, it's going to be great. This is an eight lap sprint race, okay?
04:40Race one and two are just eight lap sprints. So the track's going to be fresh right now.
04:45But after eight laps, it'll start to show a little character. When we run the SX1 race one after
04:52that, the 450s are on that, that's when the track's really going to get chewed up.
04:56Character good, the rest of it no bueno, right?
04:58Yeah. Yeah, and that character, you can see. Here's the other points you can win.
05:02Ten gives you, first gives you ten, second, nine, third gives you eight, and so forth,
05:07all the way down to tenth, where you pick up just one. Here's the number two bike.
05:11Having a really good ride now. Cole Thompson, that Canadian rider on the Venom Bud racing machine.
05:15Thompson sitting in fourth, trying to catch up to Lopes, see if he can get up to third.
05:19I'm telling you guys, though, Colin Park is my pick. I think he's got it. He's just riding
05:27with so much more confidence than what I've seen him ride with before. And Thompson and
05:33Park right there, fourth and fifth, these guys are going to battle for the podium. I think
05:38they both have the speed to get up there.
05:41Yeah, then Hicks behind them on the start, watching Thompson coming right at you. There's
05:45Park. Park's a little bit taller rider, too, Jeff. Is that going to give him an advantage
05:50on a track like this tonight that's going to get all chewed up?
05:52It could. It could, definitely, especially when you're skimming the Wolves. You can move
05:56your weight around a little bit more. He's all over Thompson.
05:58Yeah, he's closing in in a hurry. Here they come over the finish line jump. Where will Park
06:02try to get around Thompson? Do you see anywhere on the track, Daniel, where he has an advantage?
06:07Yeah, a couple spots. And that's what's cool about this track, is you see different line
06:10choices. Thompson being a little bit tighter on some insides. Park trying to work the outsides,
06:15and we saw that in qualifying in Super Bowl. These guys are taking all kinds of different
06:19rhythm combos, left and right in the Wolves, some jumping, some blitz, and there's that
06:23different line right there. And that's what's great about this opening moto. Not everything
06:27has developed just yet. You can swing wide, try different options, and they're doing that
06:31now. Watching Anstey in the upper left, coming up to just the last lap here, scheduled only
06:37for eight. Look at Park going through the Wolves here. That could be a spot
06:40where he makes something happen. We go back to the race leader, Max Anstey. Here he comes
06:44towards the finish line jump.
06:48It'll be one to go for Max Anstey.
06:55But did Park make that pass? Let's see. No. Time in scoring still has Park in fifth.
07:01Thompson able to fend that off of Tom. The last lap, Park has got the whoops dialed. He's
07:06going down the right side. Thompson's going down the left. Shock still running smoothly
07:11in second. Here's Lopes all by himself in third. Then it's back here. We get to
07:15Thompson and Park. This is where it gets really interesting. And Hicks right behind
07:19them. Then McElrath hanging on in seventh. Peters has dropped back to eighth in this
07:24opening race number one for the SX2 category. Anstey, nice run through the whoops, keeping an
07:29eye on the rest of them. Everybody pretty smooth there. But they're going through in
07:33different areas. You saw Lopes far to the right. Look at Thompson. Right up along the
07:37tough blocks. And here's Park trying to find a way around on this final lap. Gets a little
07:41bit wider. And Anstey will light the candles as he takes the win in SX2, race number one.
07:50And in the final corner, Park gets together with Thompson. It looks like, is it going to be
07:55Hicks? Oh, three riders wide. Thompson, Park, and Hicks. Is that the way? That's what timing
08:00and scoring is showing right now. Yeah, it looks like it. Thompson just got there.
08:07Park went for it. Oh, yeah. They're talking about it. They're not happy. No.
08:12This is heating up real quick here. Thompson was stingy with those inside lines trying to play
08:18a little defense. Park is obviously not happy. Park's not having anything to do with it. I love it.
08:24They're going to keep beating and banging on each other. And the FIM officials get in the
08:29way to say, nope, let it go. Race one, guys. That's just race one.
08:35Yeah. Here's a look at the results. Anstey, Shock, Lopes. But the story was over fourth.
08:41Thompson, Park, and Hicks. That was the story. Three riders going for the win. Two Americans
08:47and a Canadian battling to the checkered flag here in Vancouver.
08:54All right. What a great way to start the night off here in BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.
09:04Let's go down and meet the race winner.
09:08Max, you are racing on another level this year, four for four on the season.
09:12What is the point you're trying to prove? Is there a statement you're looking to make?
09:15Yeah. I mean, every lap, go out and execute. It's just trying to be better than I was yesterday.
09:23And last year here, I made a few mistakes. So one down. I've got two more to go. I need to lock in and make sure I execute.
09:31Can't give it up to the whole star racing crew back at home in Cairo, Georgia for making this happen with Team GSM here, the collaboration.
09:38Being a part of this and coming to five different continents, you know, five different places, all these races, racing in different, you know, South America last week and now here in Vancouver.
09:47It's awesome. I love the fans. I'm here to do my job. And let's go out and do it two more times.
09:53Max, well done. And guys, what he's alluding to last year at this race, a ninth place finish in race three prevented him from the win.
10:00He's looking for it this weekend.
10:02Right now, Chris, and he doesn't know anything but the top step of the podium. That's the way his year has been. Every time he's been on the track in a race, Max Anstey's been first to the checkers.
10:11As this one got underway, he was first to Carpe turn number one. And then the battle really heated up behind him. Anstey was perfect, as we've seen all year long.
10:21Cody Schock chased him as hard as he could, ended up second. Back here is where the battle was. Lopes would eventually get around here to get third.
10:28But watch Thompson here on the two, Park on the 43, and Hicks as well on the 460.
10:36They would go out of these three all the way to the very last corner in this opening race where things got really heated up as they got together.
10:47You can see it in the background as Anstey comes over the checkered flag. What a ray to start the night.
10:58All right, let's take a look at the event standings here with SX2. One race of three in the books.
11:06Anstey, Shock, Lopes, Thompson, Park, and Hicks. They're going to be fun to watch all night long.
