00:00Sabrina 90's show, Sabrina the Teenage Boy.
00:04Sabrina complains that she waited at her locker for 20 minutes for Harvey and he decided to hang out with his friends at a garage.
00:12It's out of character for this show's version of Harvey is usually nothing but a night's guide to the point of being a pushover at one point.
00:19Even the original Harvey never ditched her to do this, but I can't sympathize with him preferring to hang out with people he actually has stuff in common with more than the average student.
00:30It's only bad because he didn't warn her he was going to do that before she waited for so long.
00:36They wonder what guys talk about when they're not around, and all Harvey's talking about is something gross.
00:42Which is a sexist joke because it's framed as if all guys talk like this when girls aren't around, and it's at their expense.
00:50Then Sabrina and Valerie visit Harvey at the garage, and there's another joke at Valerie's expense because she says she tried the wrong key to a car before.
00:58Sabrina asks what a lowrider is and gets told it rides real low, and I guess because that's all he bothered to say, she got bored and left.
01:10After pointless padding, Hilda gets called by Mr. Craft for a date she turns him down for.
01:17She lampshades how forced it was because last time she pepper sprayed him.
01:21Hilda finds out what Sabrina wants to learn about, and happily suggests turning herself a male to find out.
01:29Zelda refuses, and Hilda says that the last time Zelda tried it she got lost for 50 years because she refused to ask for directions.
01:37And she sounds like she finds it funny, and Zelda doesn't reveal that she made that up to make fun of her.
01:44Which means that somehow a witch who could reverse the boy spell at any time got lost for 50 years despite her ability to warp whoever she wants.
01:55So the only way she could have gotten lost was if somehow turning herself into a boy also made her so stupid that she refused to warp back to where she once was out of pride.
02:07It sounds texas to assume that turning into a guy would always guarantee that you'd get too prideful.
02:14Because the generalization, and it'd usually only be true if the witch you used to the spell thought that to have a male brain, you had to have a bigger ego because of it, and that affected the spell.
02:25Though it is true that the male brain is more reckless because a hypothalamus, which is responsible for rational thinking, is smaller.
02:33And it would be reckless to keep wandering the world without asking for directions or warping back to where you used to be.
02:39But being reckless doesn't require you to be overconfident in yourself.
02:43It just makes you too optimistic.
02:46Which just correlates with overconfidence.
02:48And she might have refused to do rational thought because she thought she'd feel really bad about not making the decision that solved the problem earlier.
02:56But why would becoming a guy make her get more emotional about her imperfection?
03:01If anything, you'd expect the sexist who made that spell to have the opposite thing happen.
03:05The fact that the spell would change your behavior means that it's not just changing most of your body.
03:10It changes your brain structure a little too to match what you'd expect the brain to be like for that body.
03:17Which would have to mean you'd actually identify as the gender people would expect you to have at that point.
03:23So it should be obvious why Zelda was able to stand being male for so long.
03:28If the side effect of using a spell was always wishing it'd get undone the entire time,
03:33everyone who used it would immediately undo it.
03:36So of course they didn't half-ass it.
03:38Zelda just leaps it at telling them not to do it, and somehow expects that to convince them.
03:45So of course Hilda helps her make the potion.
03:47Which is nice and cool of her.
03:50But it's so forced that Zelda was so half-assed about this instead of explaining any other ways this could go wrong.
03:57It should be explained that the reason she won't simply erase their memory of her wanting to use that spell
04:02is that she thinks brainwashing is always wrong.
04:05Except when it involves making a mortal forget about magic,
04:09because that's to avoid a lot worse consequences than Sabrina could get here.
04:14It's always confusing when they have the word spell used to apply to potions.
04:18How do you get that wrong?
04:20Hilda tells Sabrina that when she drinks the potions, she'll mostly have her own thoughts.
04:25Key word being mostly.
04:27So as if the story didn't make it obvious before,
04:30you'd have to be really dense enough to get it at this point.
04:34The show wasn't trying to say anything interesting about Zelda.
04:37The potion literally turns you into a man.
04:40Sabrina burps and says sorry, and she's turned into a guy.
04:44It's annoying that her male voice sounds like the actress trying to sound like a guy.
04:49Badly.
04:49Sabrina's surprised that she knows what a chronograph is now.
04:55So Hilda was being literal when she said it would make her become like she would have ended up
04:58if she had been born with a Y chromosome.
05:01The potion makes a prediction about how you would have turned out differently
05:04if you had been subjected to the social conditioning for the opposite gender,
05:08even though that's still not a guarantee about which specific things you'd end up into,
05:11because there's still a ton of different things guys are interested in as subjects.
05:15Apparently it scanned her brain and figured out that the only thing keeping Sabrina
05:20from wanting to learn what a chronograph is was that she was raised to be a girl.
05:25Salem warned Sabrina not to use perfume or she'll get beaten up.
05:29It was nice of them to warn her.
05:31And the potion really is advanced then,
05:33because instead of making her literally as stereotypical as possible,
05:37it really did figure out what she would have been like if she were raised as a boy.
05:41There's a lot of people that don't act like you'd expect,
05:43so a few guys would use perfume.
05:46So Sabrina's just got the kind of personality that means she'd want to use perfume no matter what.
05:51She's supposed to come up with a new name, and she says Kirby,
05:54being forced to be stupid enough to say a name she'd be beaten up for,
05:58which Salem warns her about.
06:00It's not like she heard the word before, as far as we know.
06:04It's literally just a forced joke.
06:07She has to drink the potion again, because it only lasts for two hours.
06:11Wait, then why did...
06:13Wait.
06:13So obviously that means that the potion Zelda used was a permanent one,
06:20because otherwise she would have had to keep drinking the potion over and over to stay a boy for 50 years.
06:29And since Sabrina's an idiot, she greets Valerie by name.
06:33And conveniently, she doesn't point out that she looks like she'd be Sabrina's twin brother.
06:37So obviously the potion makes it impossible to notice this.
06:42Somehow Harvey and his friends don't either.
06:45Sabrina gets happily greeted by the guys, who all bump each other as a greeting to act tough.
06:50It wouldn't seem confusing if it weren't for the fact that no other guy before this episode ever acted this way.
06:57It's understandable, though, since they're in a really masculine place.
07:01So they want to overcompensate to impress each other.
07:04But the issue is that the story gives off the impression that that's not why they're doing this because of the joke about what guys talk about when girls aren't around.
07:13As if this is supposed to be a generalization of what most guys are like.
07:19I can't blame them for acting more comfortable and open about their masculine interests around someone who looks like he'd care and not judge them for it.
07:26But what I can blame them all for is only thinking to check if the alternator on the car is the problem after Sabrina says it might be as a guy, not when she said it as a girl.
07:38Where they immediately assume she was wrong, even though there's apparently no reason it couldn't possibly be the problem.
07:45Why does Zelda think Hilda's going to care about her telling her that she told someone a science thing?
07:49Hilda sees Mr. Krafft at the door, and because Zelda knows she doesn't care about her life, she refuses to help her with hers.
07:59Well, she would be annoying if she was always morally perfect.
08:03So Hilda uses the guy potion to try to scare off Krafft.
08:07It's weird that she thought that would work when the reason he got a crush on her was because he saw her look and act like a guy.
08:15And she looks like a biker dude and scares him off just by calmly talking to him.
08:20The guys don't talk about anything interesting and just do a burp contest.
08:25And Sabrina uses magic to make herself do a loud burp.
08:28And I guess the story only pretends she's being really loud.
08:32Because if it could really be heard from space, it would deafen them.
08:36And Harvey says he's planning to spend time with Valerie.
08:39And I'm confused that Sabrina thinks he means a dater.
08:42Aside from her looks, there's nothing appealing about her, and he never seemed to like her.
08:47And what happened to that perfectly nice model he got called by?
08:50We should have been told why they broke up.
08:53There's plenty of other pretty girls in the school, so why would it give Valerie a chance?
08:59Salem says,
09:00You're positive he's going to ask her out.
09:03It'd be quite a twist if it turned out Salem wasn't right here.
09:06Because usually every time a character doubts Sabrina, she ends up being wrong.
09:12And it gets annoying after a while.
09:15He tells her that she could keep Valerie away from Harvey by asking her out as a guy.
09:21Sabrina uses magic to just sound like her persona from earlier.
09:24It seems insulting to my intelligence that she'd need to do that,
09:28because the way she sounds means she didn't need a spell to sound like this.
09:33Sabrina says she's comfortable and is never wearing a bra again.
09:38I guess we won't be able to notice her following through on this,
09:41so she didn't have the guts to actually go through with this vow that'd only make her life better.
09:46Or maybe she switches to wearing an undershirt.
09:49And Salem acts judgmental of her,
09:51which has to be because he's hundreds of years old,
09:53so he's used to the way things have been before.
09:56Valerie does nothing but whine on the date about the fact that she never gets asked out.
10:00And the story makes fun of her because Sabrina's relatively annoyed by it
10:04and lampshades in her head that you're not supposed to go on about that on a date.
10:08Valerie's asked if Harvey asks her out,
10:10and she accused her of not listening to her.
10:13So either she did make that clear and she didn't listen,
10:15or she only thought she did.
10:16Harvey's happy to see the two,
10:19and Sabrina tells him she's dating Valerie and he's just happy about it.
10:23Valerie says she only brought five bucks to pay for the date,
10:27and this is supposed to depict her as a loser again.
10:29It's ironic because decades before this,
10:32everyone expected women not to pay for the date.
10:35Maybe the joke's only that she's broke?
10:37Then the story has a cringey scene where Kraft goes to Hilda's house,
10:41even though he was told to leave,
10:43and he doesn't want to leave without seeing her.
10:45So eventually they wrestle,
10:47and Salem says what I was thinking.
10:50Zelda stops the fight and keeps Hilda away from him when he threatens to call the cops,
10:55and somehow all she has to say is that won't be necessary,
10:59and he arbitrarily decides not to.
11:02And she tells Hilda off because every time she's a boy, she gets into a fight.
11:07Sabrina telling Valerie that it'd be bad to tell boys she's desperate for a date
11:11doesn't have Valerie understanding that it was meant to insult her.
11:15These last two episodes have started to make me wonder.
11:19Are they making fun of autistic people with Valerie?
11:22I can't understand why she'd be so bad at interacting with people so consistently otherwise.
11:27For no reason, Harvey asks her out, and she asks Sabrina if it's okay that she agreed to it,
11:34instead of her telling Harvey to wait until she gets Sabrina's permission first.
11:38So she prioritized what she wanted first,
11:41which matches up with her betraying her earlier in the show.
11:45Sabrina calls her out for a second, but then forgives her,
11:48saying that Harvey and her agree to see other people.
11:51Valerie says she could juggle two guys no problem.
11:54That was impressively gutsy for her.
11:57I'm not sure that's in character.
11:59There really isn't that big of a risk in Valerie stealing Harvey from her,
12:05so I'm not gonna see this as a big deal.
12:09Why does anyone need to give Sabrina the idea to tell her to lure Valerie away from Harvey?
12:15And because Libby doesn't have a date, she decides to let Sabrina date her as Jack.
12:19Sabrina zaps up some shakers and listens through one to listen to Valerie,
12:25who just whines at Harvey that she never gets asked out.
12:28So she's not a threat.
12:30And the waiter sees Sabrina listen to the shaker, which is a joke at her expense.
12:34Oh, right.
12:35I realize you'd think it's weird that I keep calling her she and her anyways,
12:39as it's not like she ever wants to stay a guy.
12:42So it'd make no sense to call her a he in those instances,
12:45because it's not really humoring her or correcting the long term.
12:47Anyway, the doorbell rings at Sabrina's house,
12:51and Zelda says she should get the door before they're featured on COPS.
12:55I liked that line.
12:57Hilda says she wants to because she started to like him because he fought to defend her honor.
13:03It's only confusing because we hate him based on how he treats Sabrina,
13:07but maybe Hilda doesn't know that.
13:10Hilda grew up around old-fashioned mortals for centuries,
13:14and she's not the smart one here,
13:16so it makes sense that she'd respect him for that.
13:19I thought it was out of character for him to fight a big biker dude.
13:23And of course I did, because he acted intimidated to have Hilda the first time.
13:27But I never got told that being a coward was a big part of his character before this.
13:32He's really been all about abusing his power over others.
13:35So no wonder he'd want to overpower some big guy.
13:38And now I know why she just assumed he was a goofball when she met him.
13:42All she got out of him was that he was nervous about asking her out.
13:45So that was what she meant by goofball.
13:48And now she knows he's only a coward when it comes to asking someone out
13:51he just met for the first time.
13:53Not when it counts.
13:54She shows interest in him.
13:57But surprisingly, he says he was here to apologize to the biker and buy him a beer
14:01and insist on clearing the air with him first before going out with her.
14:05Or else it wouldn't feel right.
14:07Zelda says the biker's in the other room to make sure Hilda humors her.
14:11When all she wanted was to date him.
14:13I get to see a joke at Libby's expense.
14:15Because she keeps trying to hear the ocean through a shaker.
14:19She's gullible.
14:21What's with her barely getting abused with magic?
14:24Sabrina goes to the bathroom and some of her cries even though she knows their date sucks.
14:30Harvey tells her that he misses Sabrina but doesn't want her to feel pressured.
14:35He reassures her and he calmly warns her her mascara's running.
14:39And while he doesn't have a problem with it, the guys would be all over her.
14:43That's really nice of him.
14:44He was nice before, so it's in character.
14:47The potion wears off and I get to see Libby get annoyed at being told her date left her.
14:53Why did she tell her she listened to Pepper for him?
14:56She just embarrassed herself.
14:58Harvey compliments Sabrina because she's the only girl he knows with a guts to try gross food.
15:05Sabrina says she learns that the mystery of men is there is no mystery and all they think about is what they're eating.
15:11What a sexist message.
15:13See, that's my problem.
15:16That's the lesson of the episode.
15:18It's not unintentional.
15:20We were supposed to learn that.
15:22In a show for kids.
15:24What were they thinking?
15:26It's even more confusing that such a man-hating episode was written by a guy.
15:30The whole reason the plot happened was because she asked what a lowrider was and she didn't really get told the answer.
15:39Just a dumbed-down version, I guess.
15:42Wouldn't it have felt better if she got told a more elaborate explanation of what a lowrider is as a guy?
15:50It could have shown the benefits.
15:51This episode by Nick Bacay was about Sabrina turning herself into a guy to find out what Harvey talks about with his friends at the garage
16:00because he doesn't feel like fully elaborating on his interesting cards around someone he has every reason to think won't care.
16:07She gets insecure about the idea that he'd inexplicably want to date Valerie and spies on their date.
16:13I mean, Harvey's a nice guy, so there was a possibility that she'd make him feel bad for and comfort her and then distort things between them.
16:21But it was so predictable that there were no stakes because Sabrina already found out Valerie sucked to date.
16:27At least most of the plot was believable instead of forced to happen.
16:31I also got to see Mr. Kraft have to put up with Hilda Teller to stop trying to ask her out,
16:36even though there's no way he'd want to date her again.
16:39But it was all worth it because he got wrestled because of it.
16:43Anyway, the episode was tolerable, but I found it a little annoying because it kept making generalizations against men,
16:49which came off as sexist.
16:52And I say that because someone wondered what guys say when girls aren't around,
16:56and it kept to the main guys focused on for the episode.
16:59And they're just talking like, what's grosser?
17:02So it felt like the story was trying to say that most men were like them,
17:05even though you can't fairly generalize a group based on a small sample size.
17:10And they're teenagers!
17:11Of course they're going to feel extra pressure to act manly to impress each other,
17:16because teenagers are childish and insecure compared to adults.
17:20The moral of the story I noticed from what happened in the plot,
17:24is that Sabrina should have trusted Harvey not to leave her for Valerie,
17:27because what she already knew about him was still true.
17:30It didn't need to be spun as a lesson that all men are simpler than you think,
17:34and just talk about gross stuff around each other.
17:37And Sabrina was just overthinking it by being paranoid,
17:40and overestimating the intelligence of his conversations with a bunch of guys who were still smart.
17:45They were smart not to be car mechanics,
17:48but it still betrays them like nothing but stupid rap bros.
17:52The fact that they wanted to learn how technology worked
17:55already proves they'd be interested in talking about smart people stuff.
17:59And we're really foxgobody.com
18:06But please,
18:07if you would like to be honest,
18:08let's go ahead and see your questions.
18:10You can feel it.
18:11You're right.
18:13And I think that like you're a little bit better.
18:15You know what,
18:16you know what,
18:18I think we took a lot more comments and a little bit more.
18:19I think that like you were a little bit more comfortable.
18:21There's a theme for every walk that you're able to play.
