00:00Sabrina 90's show Magic Joel
00:02Salem tells Sabrina the phone's for her and it's from Harvey
00:06So that's nice of him
00:07It doesn't sound like Harvey on the phone
00:10I wonder if it's Salem
00:11She's heard him on the phone before
00:14She should know it's not Harvey
00:16At least Sabrina liked being told she's the prettiest girl in school
00:20Sabrina only figures it out when he says he likes Squid
00:24But that shouldn't have given it away
00:27Harvey could have liked Squid
00:29Harvey invites Sabrina to play soccer
00:36She acts boastful about doing well and then gets embarrassed
00:40Eventually Sabrina asks how she could get Harvey to notice her more
00:46And Zelda says being would interesting help
00:48Sabrina jokes that she could tell him she's a witch and she'd blow something up
00:52Which is played off lightheartedly
00:54She thankfully says she knows that's not the answer
00:57And gets reassured
00:59It's a good thing she always just assumed that she wasn't allowed to tell people she's a witch
01:05Because she wasn't told that in the pilot
01:09Then when she says a flattering job offer is perfect for her
01:14Because it says beautiful in the offer
01:16She's called conceited
01:18Why does the story keep embarrassing her?
01:22Then I feel bad for someone who's getting rejected as a magician's assistant
01:26Because he's not a girl
01:27That guy writing the note should have specified that he wanted a girl
01:32Sabrina's being way too obvious about her magic here
01:37She shows a magician that she can make an apple big just by pointing at it
01:41He doesn't assume a demon or guardian angel did it
01:45And instead assume that impossible magic tricks did this
01:49And she's got the job
01:50Maybe he didn't pay attention to her hand so he didn't see that she pointed
01:56But still
01:58Did he just assume that it was a balloon that only looked like an apple?
02:04And after patting
02:05The magician says that he only got into magic tricks at first to make girls like him
02:09But somehow girls hate magic tricks
02:11I doubt that
02:13I bet they like it when they go to magic shows willingly
02:16But thankfully he says he's stuck with magic tricks because he likes them
02:21And wishes magic was real
02:22After boredom
02:24The magician goes into something
02:26And Sabrina closes and opens the curtain
02:28And wonders where the magician went
02:30And eventually gives her a rose
02:33That past scene was completely pointless
02:36What does Hilda call Salem the cat?
02:40She knows he's not a real cat
02:42Libby should be known for her attitude
02:46So Joel wouldn't have tried to impress her with a picket card cliché
02:50Joel cuts the tie of Mr. Pool
02:53And surprisingly he does fix the cut tie
02:56And even makes it cleaner
02:57Libby looks socially awkward for once
03:00By repeatedly trying to give Harvey gossip about people he doesn't know and care about
03:05Joel makes Sabrina happy with some news
03:09The Zelda got called by her old college pal who's visiting tonight
03:13Zelda says Hilda's welcome to join them
03:17And she says
03:17I'd rather die
03:19But thanks
03:20Which was almost funny
03:22Somehow Harvey's surprised that Sabrina joined a magic act
03:27Joel shows people the rings are still linked and doesn't impress them
03:31Of course people would assume they're specially made rings that would of course still be linked
03:37They look like they made a medal
03:39I wonder if this time he'll mess up the tie trick
03:45I knew it
03:46He cuts the wrong part and ruins Grandpa's tie on him
03:51Why does Sabrina say
03:53Isn't he amazing
03:55If she's not being sarcastic
03:57Libby lies to Harvey that Joel's Sabrina's boyfriend
04:01In a clearly bad attempt to sabotage her that could backfire
04:05Sabrina gets Joel trapped like she was supposed to
04:08And the audience would have heard him tell her that his pants are stuck
04:11Sabrina uses magic to make him invisible to impress the audience anyway
04:17I guess they thought they weren't as stuck as he thought
04:20Why doesn't Sabrina change him back as soon as possible
04:24Why does she free him first
04:27Because of that terrible writing
04:30He runs away thinking that he's used magic on himself
04:34Because he wanted to think that
04:36Even though a more logical explanation is that the girl who made an apple grow in front of him was a witch
04:41Because he never heard of that trick
04:43And he's a magician
04:44Then after Joel crossed the line by lying to Harvey that he's Sabrina's boyfriend
04:50Because she took a rose from him without having the obvious idea to turn him down on the obvious advance
04:56I wonder why Sabrina doesn't point to instantly return him to normal
05:00Mr. Poole says Sabrina should lose Joel
05:08And Joel tries to hit him and then pulls a chair away from him as he tries to sit down
05:13Then he sees the map go upwards and assumes it's his grandpa haunting him
05:17Somehow Sabrina has to call Hilda and get her to warp a cure to the invisibility spell to her
05:24Can't she just imagine that he isn't invisible because she knows how he's supposed to look?
05:30Have there be multiple plots
05:31Realistically she has to go to the girls' locker room and she's smart enough to get them to run out of there by saying that she smells smoke
05:39And then realistically she fails to throw talcum powder that's magical on Joel because he's invisible
05:45It's too bad that after the first failed attempt she doesn't point
05:50So that when she tries to throw talcum powder
05:53It goes ahead of her in this huge wide and tall wave
05:58I guess she can't do that because it's potion ingredients
06:03So she can't increase the amount of them that's in there
06:07Because that'd be creating magic
06:10Her spell would make it so that she teleported some of the powder out of the thing
06:15Just by trying to throw some stuff out of it
06:18Because she's stupid so that's fine
06:20Hilda's attempt to mox Zelda backfires on her because she didn't know Zelda's friend was gonna look good
06:27Joel hits Harvey in the face with a plate that was right in front of him
06:31And he ends up embarrassing Sabrina because she tries to hit him a lot in front of the people at the slicery
06:36Just because Sabrina was making money off of technically cheating because she's using her own born powers
06:44I'm glad the story doesn't explicitly say that Sabrina deserves all of this because she took the job from a real magician
06:52That doesn't mean all of this is okay
06:55I'm glad that it's made clear that Joel's in the wrong
06:59And it's also made pretty obvious that it's not an inevitable result of Sabrina using magic as her assistant
07:07It's just the fact that she freed him before turning him back to normal
07:11Hilda realistically doesn't like the conversation with that man because he's smart
07:16After Hilda leaves, he's so awkward that he tells Zelda to love me
07:21But at least then he makes a better conversation with her
07:24He complains that he finally got rid of her weird sister and all she can talk about is the Big Bang
07:29He says he's been playing footsie with her and Zelda says she thought that was the cat
07:34Fortunately, despite him trying to leave, Zelda says she can't let him leave and uses magic to make him slip on the floor
07:41And she helps him up and they return to the kitchen and close the door as romantic music plays
07:47Eventually, Harvey visits Sabrina because he was worried about her for losing it at the slicery
07:54And he was worried that she was mad at him
07:56So he asks her out, which delights her
07:59That's convenient
08:01Joel plays the piano and Sabrina conveniently says that she still likes him despite everything he did
08:08Well, she has to be that forgiving when she lives with her aunts
08:12And she reassures him in the audience that eventually people would appreciate magic tricks as you get older
08:18There's no point in hearing him talk about how girls don't like magic tricks in that past scene
08:25And Joel goes into the locker room while only livies in it inexplicably because he somehow thought he had turned himself invisible
08:32Because Zelda hears her prospective boyfriend say that he's eating a can of tuna
08:37She assumes that it was Salem impersonating him and says she can't believe he tricked her and says the word Salem
08:44She could always erase her memory of this anyways
08:47So there'd be no excuse for this ending in her relationship
08:51Fortunately, his only reaction is to say with barely any emotion
08:56What's her problem?
08:57This story was by Nell Scovell and Norma Safford Bella
09:02And was about Sabrina working for a magician to try to get Harvey to notice her by being a more interesting person
09:09But then after she turns to magician invisible to save his show, she stupidly frees him before turning invisible again
09:17That's why he runs out of the thing he was trapped in to take advantage of things
09:21Which anyone with common sense would have expected to happen
09:25It's not like she couldn't get away with pointing to reverse things because it'd be obvious magic
09:29Because growing the apple somehow didn't give her away to a magician
09:33And she kind of put the curtain in front of him first in a lifetime that he hallucinated being invisible
09:39And somehow she needed to accurately hit him with powder to reverse the spell that she did by pointing in the first place
09:47It should have explained that Sabrina ran out of magic
09:50It was disturbing how he acted the whole time
09:53Even going to the girls' locker room
09:56Though it's a good thing the writer had the guts to go there because it'd be completely forced if he didn't
10:01Not only was Joel evil, but it made me feel bad for Sabrina that she kept getting embarrassed without doing anything to deserve it in the episode itself
10:09Especially since we never find out that there were definitely people who deserved the job who would've wanted to get it that she took it from
10:19The writing just sunk, blatantly forcing the length of the episode to be so long
10:25And Zelda had a short subplot that goes from some nice karma against Hilda to awkward to sweet
10:33But for all I know Zelda thinking that it was Salem on the phone kept them from dating her anyways
10:39So it's value is determined by whether he keeps being around after this episode
10:43Speaking as someone who just watched a few of the episodes after this, he doesn't
10:48The only message I can think of the story having been
10:52Don't give up on magic tricks just because they don't impress girls in high school
10:56Yeah, duh
10:58I'm glad it was another episode that didn't think it had to teach Sabrina the lesson
11:02Well, maybe it was trying to if you squinted really hard
11:06But it's hard to tell because the reason that Joel caused so much trouble was because she freed him too fast
11:14Not because she's a witch
11:16And there's a lesson to not just assume that just because someone's interested in science means he's not handsome
11:22Wouldn't it be great if the next episode knew this lesson?
11:26Neither lesson makes the episode good
11:30So far, all of the bad episodes would still be a 4 out of 10 for me in experience
11:35I think they suck, but they're only just a little annoying, and I've seen way worse
11:40This is not as bad as the animated series
11:43It's not such a bad story if the only thing wrong was logic for once
11:47I wish new Sonic stories were this quality
11:50And yeah, there's a reason that I never rate anything numerically
11:54It's too hard
11:56If you really want to be accurate, you'd have to take into consideration how every major element of storytelling was handled
12:04And you'd have to do a separate score for how you feel about the story
12:08...
