00:01Previously on Project Runway All-Stars...
00:03Betty Boop!
00:04Boop, boop, ba-doop!
00:05Oh, my God!
00:07I would like you to design a young, chic, Hollywood outfit.
00:11Everyone can band together. I don't need other people's ideas.
00:15I'm trying to get neoprene to have a drape. It's just not flowing.
00:18The particular neoprene that Sharp poured was a little too heavy,
00:22and it's looking a hot-ass mess.
00:24I love the neckline. I like the ease of the sarong-style skirt.
00:33You brought anatomy in a racy way, and that's not easy.
00:37There's an athleisure element with the t-shirt, but you've made it luxe.
00:40The winning designer is Joshua.
00:45The front of it almost looked like saggy balls.
00:49Wow.
00:50It's depressing here to see this fabric not give her any curves.
00:53I've started with it being flowy.
00:55Flowy and neoprene?
00:56It looks like such a mess.
00:58The designer eliminated tonight is...
01:01...Shar.
01:04This is Project Runway All-Stars.
01:13I love this view.
01:14That's beautiful.
01:15It's so pretty.
01:16It's a lovely day out.
01:18We're walking up to meet Alyssa at the Hudson River Museum.
01:21This is cute.
01:23I'm excited and nervous, and I feel like it's one of those days that I can't tell them apart.
01:29Astronomy.
01:30Oh, how fun.
01:32Wow.
01:33I'm very intrigued by space.
01:37I love just knowing what's going on with the galaxies and what's going on beyond Earth.
01:41I think all of that is amazing.
01:42Good morning, All-Stars.
01:44Good morning.
01:45Welcome to the Hudson River Museum Planetarium.
01:50Fashion inspiration can be drawn from anywhere.
01:54The Earth, the sky, and even what's beyond.
01:58For this week's challenge, we're taking you on a field trip through the universe for designs based on the cosmos.
02:06And because we're going where no All-Star has gone before.
02:11Oh, my goodness.
02:12We want you to really push the boundaries of your creativity and create an avant-garde look.
02:19Yes.
02:21Avant-garde is basically wearable art.
02:25Even though avant-garde is not exactly what I do as a designer, I'm not intimidated by this challenge.
02:31I'm so excited because I won my season of the avant-garde challenge, and this is the time you can do whatever you want.
02:38And here's some more good news.
02:40We have a week.
02:42That's not that good.
02:43No, your mood budget is $350 each.
02:47That's a lot of money.
02:49I need you to hear my cry, Papa.
02:54More good news.
02:55Since it's the avant-garde challenge, you have two days in the workroom.
02:59Woo!
03:00I'm just so excited.
03:01I'm just over the moon for this one.
03:03No pun intended.
03:04To provide inspiration while you sketch, the Planetarium has a special presentation just for you.
03:10Yes.
03:11So sit back and enjoy the show, and I will see you on the runway.
03:15Good luck.
03:16Bye.
03:18Oh, hell.
03:19And the stars pop up, and you see the planet.
03:29It feels like I'm really going through space, so it's really like a field trip.
03:32I'm sketching, like, these orbits.
03:34I don't want to create something that I've seen already.
03:36So for me, I figure I'm going to let the shapes create the silhouettes.
03:39I'm going to let the shapes do the talking.
03:44I just want to know what these stripes are.
03:46What is that?
03:47I am going to make the Milky Way my inspiration for this challenge.
03:51The Milky Way has all these different rings, so what I'm going to do is center the waistline
03:56of my dress as the center of the Milky Way and just kind of branch out through paints and beautiful colors.
04:03Whoa.
04:04Aww.
04:05I'm thinking of Neptune because the planet is cold and dark.
04:09Whoever this person is, she's going to need a coat.
04:11The whole look is going to be fringe.
04:13I want to take this material that is soft and flimsy and kind of pull it together,
04:17almost like the particles in the wind frozen in time.
04:20All right, you guys.
04:21Ready to go to the mood?
04:22All right.
04:23All right.
04:30We got 30 minutes to shop, y'all.
04:32All right.
04:37And this is the longest?
04:38This is all the black and gold thing.
04:40I get really inspired by the neutron star.
04:43The colors are orange, yellow, and gold.
04:46And I feel like I want to have the shape of the neutron, outline the dress,
04:51and then I'm going to get some tulle and just have it shooting out of what I would consider to be the black hole.
04:56Yeah.
04:57Two yards of this and then two yards of this.
04:59My inspiration for this challenge is the black hole.
05:04So I'm making a cocoon coat.
05:06I'll tell you what.
05:07I'm going to get rid of it.
05:08Okay.
05:09My inspiration for this challenge is a quasar.
05:11So I'm creating this two feet circular effect around the model's waist.
05:16How much are these little tack things?
05:18I'm choosing Pluto as my inspiration because what I'm most intrigued about is Pluto's characteristics.
05:25It's hard.
05:26It's covered by nitrogen ice.
05:28So I'm building a shield of armor out of melted hot glue.
05:32But then I have this pair of chaps to resemble the hardcore aspect of this planet.
05:38Designers have five minutes.
05:40You're still a long ruler.
05:42No.
05:43No.
05:44I get inspired by the eclipse.
05:48It just seems very crisp, clean.
05:50And I'm making three pieces.
05:52A mask, a blouse, and a jumpsuit.
05:55And you're going to see white elements coming from the sleeve.
05:57It's going to just create the feeling of a solar eclipse.
06:00Time's up, designers!
06:03Thank you!
06:05Thank you!
06:11Yay!
06:14Helen, did you win the avant-garde challenge on your season?
06:19No.
06:20I actually didn't do so hot.
06:22My inspiration is a supernova.
06:24I'm really nervous about this challenge because my first avant-garde ever on Project Runway was a flop.
06:29My second was actually really good.
06:31I almost won.
06:32And now's my third chance to just take home, like, the whole thing.
06:36Don't lose your mind, Helen.
06:38Lose this contest, Helen, but don't lose your mind.
06:41I'm just like...
06:42I'm just playing a little bit.
06:47I wanted to focus on, like, the orbit.
06:51Yeah.
06:52And so kind of this whole, like, trinity of going around and around.
06:57This is, like, I feel like your challenge with, like...
06:59That's what...
07:00Like, the pressure's on for you.
07:01Don't say it.
07:02Don't say it.
07:03Don't say it.
07:04I am nervous.
07:05I've been in the bottom for so long.
07:07In my head, I'm thinking, like, I've never done anything like this before.
07:10But the cool thing about this is that I feel like I'm doing what I'm, like, destined and wanted to do for the first time.
07:16Like, go big or go home.
07:18Can we have a moment in songs for our girl, Sean?
07:21Damn, did she die or get eliminated?
07:23She got eliminated!
07:24She got eliminated!
07:25If they get my ass up out here, y'all better have a whole day of remembrance.
07:31The fact that I'm doing pants that have these rings, like seen in the Milky Way, is quite different.
07:38Usually don't see that level of structure and construction in pants.
07:41So this is about full execution because they need to fit impeccably.
07:46They need to look amazing.
07:47I'm so excited about my pants.
07:57It's humongous.
07:58I know, right?
07:59One piece like this.
08:00I'm kind of, like, going back and forth between ideas and trying to figure out how this leather is working and if it's going to work with what I want to do.
08:07And then if not, what am I going to turn it into because all I have really is this leather.
08:12It looks like ice, though.
08:13Yeah, it's supposed to be ice.
08:14Oh, so you're going full ice.
08:15Yeah.
08:16I think it'll turn out really cool if, like, if I can get some of this flat.
08:20So, like, get this done and then I can build off of it.
08:23I have the glue on the mannequin, which is fantastic.
08:26And then I have about half a sheet of glue on my little rotary cutter.
08:31So I know that I need more of this.
08:33It's just really taking a long time for the glue to heat up.
08:37It's going to take forever.
08:39You don't have, like, time for trial and error.
08:41You have to go with it.
08:42I know.
08:43But that's the worst.
08:45I know.
08:46My arm is exhausted.
08:47I'm exhausted.
08:48And I'm not sure if I have enough of this glue to really work with.
08:53So really it's just praying and hoping that it'll all work out.
08:57Y'all it's time to go.
08:58Okay.
08:59Josh is using this hot glue technique.
09:02I don't know what he's doing, but it doesn't look anything like outer space.
09:06Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
09:09This isn't something avant-garde to me at all.
09:11I think on the runway you're going to be surprised.
09:13Simple is not avant-garde.
09:15I would just advise you to watch the sparkle.
09:18I'm going to put as many crystals on my damn look as I want.
09:26Yes, for the review.
09:27See how it actually pulls up.
09:34Cause this tape is designed for nothing to stick to it.
09:37That's powerful.
09:38I realized that the glue won't stick to the tape.
09:41So there's success already.
09:43I know this looks going really far out there by adding this, but thinking avant-garde,
09:48this is all outrageous and experimental.
09:51So why not have a little fun with it?
09:55So how's she going to pose on the runway?
10:00What's she going to do with her arm?
10:02I give myself four hours to get just my prep work done.
10:06I have this technique that I want to do and it's a lot of processes just to get the material done.
10:12So I'm really going to put myself on a really strict schedule.
10:15I'm just really nervous that if I mess up this fringe at any point in this process, I'm not going to be ready.
10:21Hi designers.
10:24Hi.
10:25So last week was fun with Betty Boop.
10:27Although I do hear that the judges were a little worried you were staying in your safe place.
10:32I need you to really push it this week.
10:34The avant-garde challenge is no time to play it safe.
10:37So I can't wait to see what you've got.
10:39Hello.
10:40Hi Anthony.
10:41Which celestial body were you inspired by?
10:44Well, I selected the Milky Way.
10:46Ooh.
10:47And I'm using the bottom of my pants that kind of serve as the ring.
10:51I'm using crystals and I'm also using paints.
10:53Mmm.
10:54And don't worry, I know what you always say.
10:56Pageant, prom, or wedding, it's not going to be either of the three.
11:00So.
11:01And you're going to paint this fabric?
11:03In the waistline.
11:04Okay, this looks to me like you as a designer.
11:06I would just advise you to watch the sparkle.
11:08Okay.
11:09My inspiration is the neutron star.
11:12The colors of it, there's this golden orange.
11:15That kind of got me inspired.
11:17How does this represent a neutron star to you?
11:19It's formed by the collapse of another massive star.
11:22So that's how I got the collapse.
11:24I'm really curious to see how it moves on your model.
11:27Yes.
11:28And it just disappear into a gold triangle.
11:29Yes.
11:30My inspiration is Neptune.
11:32And the first thing that struck out to me was the color.
11:35And it's the planet that has the strongest winds.
11:37And that's why I went with the fringe and I'm quoting it.
11:39I love the inspiration for your textile and the fact that you've created this.
11:42Do you think this will read, though, from where the judges sit on the runway?
11:46They're not going to know at first glance what it is.
11:49And I like that about the textile.
11:51I'm not going to change it.
11:52And I'm not going to change it because I really believe in this.
11:54And also because all I have is fringe.
11:56So I can't really go a different route right now.
11:58So I'm inspired by the orbits.
12:00Because I love the idea of the orbits going in the body and then it comes back out.
12:04I think the thing is the judges have seen this from you.
12:06Really?
12:07Well, we always love how you play with your fabrics.
12:09Okay.
12:10You make shapes.
12:11This is the time to exaggerate it and...
12:13Exaggerate?
12:14Oh, my God.
12:15Push it.
12:16Okay.
12:17I'm going to cover up everything, et cetera.
12:18Didn't you cover the model's face in the avant-garde charge last time?
12:21I did.
12:22I did.
12:23Are you concerned at all about repeating yourself?
12:25Supernova's really powerful.
12:26Just like an explosion of energy.
12:28How is this an explosion?
12:29I didn't want to make it so literal.
12:31I just wanted to soften it.
12:32Do you think this feels avant-garde?
12:34Uh, not in the state that it is in.
12:36I know that you tend to go elegant.
12:37Okay.
12:38I really want you to push it.
12:39I will.
12:40I chose Pluto and kind of this inspiration came from it has a really hard layer of ice.
12:46Okay.
12:47What's this part of it?
12:48You know, I'm kind of building some editorial bondage gear.
12:52I think bondage gear is something we've seen again and again.
12:54Yeah.
12:55It's not brand new.
12:56You know, the wheel's been done.
12:58I'm merely adding a spoke, so.
12:59Okay.
13:00We love you here.
13:01I feel like I never quite get it when I get here, and then I'm very pleasantly surprised
13:04by the runway.
13:05Good luck.
13:06Thanks, Anne.
13:07I chose a solar eclipse.
13:09Mm-hmm.
13:10And I'm going to plait all the legs to create this sort of round lunar shape.
13:15This doesn't seem avant-garde to me at all.
13:16Okay.
13:17What is avant-garde about it to you?
13:19I just decided to go with simple.
13:21Simple is not avant-garde.
13:22Avant-garde doesn't have to be crazy complicated.
13:24Mm-hmm.
13:25It just has to be really surprising.
13:26I think on the runway, you're going to be surprised.
13:29Designers, I am really inspired by all of the stories that you've told me about these
13:34astronomical bodies that you've been inspired by.
13:36But I'm not seeing those stories translate into your garments.
13:39And remember, the judges don't hear the stories until after the runway.
13:43I know you all can push it.
13:45Now make this the best avant-garde runway we've ever had.
13:48Good luck, guys.
13:50Ann, how you going to tell me don't use sparkle?
13:57Ann's hesitation with the use of crystals is that it could look a bit promish.
14:05But I'm going to put as many crystals on my damn look as I want to.
14:09What did she say to you, Josh?
14:10Bondage has been done.
14:12And I said, oh, Ann, how's it?
14:15You don't always have to see where I'm going, but you have to trust that I'll get there.
14:20Finally.
14:21How are you?
14:22How are you?
14:23How are you?
14:24How are you?
14:25No arms.
14:26Just head.
14:27Now if you put your hands in the pockets, like on the side, like...
14:30Model fitting goes great.
14:31All eyes are on her.
14:32I love that.
14:33The only element I have to do is I have to get the mask done because it needs an overnight set.
14:38It's not even mapped out yet, so I have to get to work on that.
14:41Can I borrow half of the mirror?
14:44I'm going to put a curve here.
14:46Pretty color.
14:47Pretty color.
14:48Okay, so we got a good fit.
14:50Only thing I don't have is the breastplate, but I don't need her for that part.
14:53I'm super excited.
14:55My pants fit impeccably, so that's just another notch of confidence that I'm building within myself.
15:01It's gorgeous.
15:03I love it.
15:05I own the glue, and I'm telling it what the hell to do.
15:08Which one should be on top?
15:10That's the question.
15:11I know.
15:12I'm just a little lost on my color story.
15:15I know this is not really true to who I am.
15:18Yeah, that gets too white.
15:19I like the actual natural colors.
15:21Bye, gorgeous.
15:22Cool.
15:23See you tomorrow.
15:24Thanks, babe.
15:35How was your fitting?
15:36I mean, the bodysuit and the skirt fit, but it's like I'm trying to figure out what the design is going to be.
15:39Because that thing is not working.
15:41My concern right now is that all I have is this leather, and it's not enough.
15:46I need to do something.
15:47So I'm going to paint the leather, and I'm also going to apply these crystals to the leather.
15:53Y'all, we got 30 minutes before we leave.
15:56Now, in my mind, this is going to look like the galaxy.
16:00What?
16:01I got to add so many more pieces.
16:03I have to add a layer in the front so that you won't see her panties.
16:06I have a lot of shapes that I still have to hand-seal to make sure that the garment is complete.
16:11Ooh!
16:13You like the family.
16:14You know what?
16:15I just picked a little Soul Train cartoon to keep coming through.
16:18Uh-oh.
16:20It's just a joke.
16:23No, because I wouldn't do you like that family.
16:25But after the runway tomorrow, I need to holla at you in the ladies' room.
16:29Okay.
16:30Anthony, we have 15 minutes before we leave.
16:3315 minutes?
16:34Yes.
16:39See, I don't...
16:40Well, what else would you do?
16:44My sleeves are still not done.
16:46I feel like I need to do a lot of figuring out.
16:48I did feel like it was too much.
16:51I'm starting to get the jitters because there's going to be a lot of work to do in the morning,
16:55and I don't like to do work before the runway.
16:58Hey, y'all.
16:59It's time to go.
17:00I'm not going to lie.
17:03This challenge is getting the best of me.
17:08Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
17:10Fabio's design.
17:11I don't think it's avant-garde.
17:12We've seen the paint splatter like three challenges ago.
17:15Get a new idea.
17:16Kimberly's motto is ass out.
17:18Battle of the streetwalkers.
17:20It looks like a war zone in here.
17:21It really does.
17:22I don't know, buddy.
17:23It's the morning of the runway, and I feel like I could just pass out.
17:36I'm so drained.
17:37Oh, lordy.
17:38And I have so much work to do, so I'm just going to braid as much as I can and just fill
17:43down the sleeve, and that's all I'm doing.
17:46Look at that, kid.
17:47Ooh, pretty.
17:48All I have left to do this morning is put in a zipper.
17:52I want to add a high collar to the neckline, so I need to paint that and jewel it, and
17:57just make sure that she's in there.
18:00Hello.
18:01Girls.
18:02Girls, girls.
18:03Well, as long as I can make this comfortable for you.
18:07Because I'm stressing.
18:09Hello.
18:10Welcome to the Umberto Hair Salon.
18:11My inspiration is Supernova, and I just wanted to go big and wild with the hair.
18:16We're going to use the Umberto Super Strong Hair Spray.
18:18Sounds great.
18:19I was inspired by the Orbit.
18:21We gather it up.
18:22Okay.
18:23Use the Roman Oil by Umberto, and then we'll bring the elastic going around and around.
18:27Yes, yes, yes, yes.
18:28Good luck.
18:29Bye, bye, bye.
18:31Welcome to the Rodeal Glam Room.
18:32Our look is quasar, so there's a lot of glimmer and a lot of activity.
18:37We're going to do a really gorgeous shaped brow, really drama.
18:42Can't wait to see it on the runway.
18:43And she's going to wear a cage on her face.
18:45We've got to see that gorgeous brow through the cage.
18:48Exactly.
18:49And the rest should be just matted out and clean.
18:50Ooh.
18:51That's good.
18:52Guys, we've got one hour before the runway.
18:59Oh, it looks so great in the back.
19:00It's a lot, but I think it's effective because there's something to talk about.
19:06But that's what I do.
19:07A lot.
19:08Oh, cool.
19:09You look like a dog.
19:11Wow.
19:12I absolutely love the finished product.
19:15I'm so excited about what I'm doing because the silhouette is quite different from anything that I've ever done.
19:19And it's also different from anything I've seen someone else do.
19:22Okay.
19:23Anthony's concept, I think it's done well, but we've seen the paint splatter like three challenges ago.
19:29Get a new idea.
19:30I need you to see it.
19:31Come back this way.
19:32Does this feel heavy?
19:35No.
19:36No?
19:37I love Fabio's design.
19:38Love, love, love.
19:39But I don't think it's avant-garde.
19:40Okay.
19:41Lovely.
19:42Oh.
19:43What happened to the serger?
19:46Fix it if it's broke.
19:48It has to be a really funny joke.
19:50It's 10 minutes to a runway and all of us are still in the brother sewing room sewing our eyeballs away.
19:58We are feeling the pressure.
19:59Oh, yeah, yeah.
20:00So we're like rushing.
20:02It is like intense right now.
20:04This is gorgeous.
20:06Damn you, Merlene.
20:08I absolutely love what Merlene did.
20:10It looks great on her model skin.
20:12But the thing with Merlene is we've already seen this with the distress challenge.
20:16And that's not even fabric.
20:18That's buck room.
20:19Wow.
20:20We're gonna go look?
20:21Come look.
20:26Yes, hold on.
20:28I think she looks fabulous.
20:30I love what they did with her makeup in the rodeo room.
20:33She looks gorgeous.
20:34All right, guys.
20:35It's time to go to the runway.
20:36Okay.
20:37You look great.
20:38I see Kimberly's look and her model is ass out.
20:43But then I look across the room and I see Josh's look and I see Helen's look.
20:48And I'm thinking to myself, battle of the street walkers.
20:53Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
20:57It's hideous.
20:58That's it, baby.
20:59That's it.
21:00That's what you're gonna get today.
21:01I really want the cape for a tree skirt.
21:03She really looked like a space queen from a porno movie.
21:06Mmm.
21:07That's it.
21:08The end of the scene, too.
21:10The winner of Project Runway All Stars will receive a fashion spread of Marie Claire and
21:15a position at the magazine as contributing editor.
21:18An inspiring trip for two to fashion capital London, England.
21:22And luxurious skincare and makeup for their debut show and beyond, all provided by Rodial.
21:28From Intermix, accessories and styling services to enhance their next collection.
21:33From Brother Sewing and Embroidery, a complete sewing and crafting studio to launch their line.
21:39And to elevate their business and build their brand, a cash prize of $100,000.
21:48Wow.
21:49Hi.
21:50Hi.
21:51So this week we had All Stars seeing stars at the Hudson River Museum's Planetarium.
21:57Your challenge was to create an avant-garde look inspired by the cosmos.
22:02Let's meet tonight's judges.
22:04First, co-founder and designer of luxury brand Marquesa, Georgina Chapman.
22:08Hi.
22:09Hi.
22:11Next, one of the most iconic names in American fashion, Isaac Mizrahi.
22:16Hi, kid.
22:17And our first guest judge is a member of one of TV's most famous families in the smash hit comedy Modern Family.
22:25His first love is Broadway, which he was back on last season with his award-winning performance in Fully Committed.
22:32Now his tie-the-knot necktie line has turned him into a fashion mogul with profits going to LGBTQ equality causes all across America.
22:42That's good.
22:44Please welcome Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
22:46And our next guest judge is known worldwide by one single name.
22:56His drag alter ego is arguably the most famous supermodel of the world.
23:01This success has made him an in-demand TV host culminating in the global phenomenon that is RuPaul's Drag Race.
23:10Please, please welcome RuPaul Charles.
23:17Designers, there is a pretty cool prize for this week's winning designers.
23:22This week's winner will have Marquesa shoes for their next professional collection.
23:27Surprise, surprise.
23:30I can't wait to see how you've dressed your heavenly bodies.
23:33Have a great show.
23:40I am quite proud of this look and I'm proud of the way the pants are moving down the runway.
23:45The fact that it gives you the drama of what you would see in a gown, but the irony is that they're pants.
23:50I absolutely love it.
23:51I feel like my model looks strong.
24:01She looks like my girl.
24:02I'm loving the hair, the makeup.
24:04I feel like the whole package is there.
24:06I love it.
24:07I absolutely love her attitude and this vibe that she's given.
24:22It's very relaxed and hard just like I wanted the black hole to be represented.
24:27I absolutely love everything.
24:38Oh, thank God you can see that quilting.
24:40Thank God the lights are working in my favor because the fringe has this sheen and it looks really expensive.
24:47So yeah, I love this one.
24:57I'm just glad that the shapes aren't flopping or folding in and I boned the hell out of those.
25:06I tried something super new and it worked out.
25:17This is a true look coming down the runway.
25:20I'm proud of the fact that it came together in two days with having spent most of my time creating this glue concept.
25:36She looks incredible.
25:37She looks like avant-garde.
25:39I mean, just the way from the walk to the way it's moving, it looks like solar eclipse.
25:43It's perfect.
25:50I like the crystals, I like the way they're shining off the light.
25:58I love what happened with the leather.
26:00I wish I had more to complete the skirt that I wanted to do.
26:03But I like the sheer midi length skirt over the bodysuit.
26:06I think it's cool.
26:07I think it says quasar and resembles the feel of space and that whole vibe.
26:24And it's doing what I want it to do.
26:26I'm really pleased with it.
26:27Designers, congratulations on tonight's runway.
26:46It was out of this world.
26:49Now, if I call your names, please step forward.
26:54Ken, Helen, Edmund.
27:01Designers, you are safe.
27:04Your work has kept you in the competition and we will see you next week.
27:08Designers, the six of you have the highest and lowest scores of the week.
27:17One of you is the winner of this week's challenge and one of you will be eliminated tonight.
27:22Favio, we're going to start with you.
27:23Tell us about your inspiration for your avant-garde look.
27:24I chose Neptune as my inspiration.
27:25It has the strongest winds in the galaxies.
27:26So I wanted to create something that's static but it imitates movement.
27:41So I created the whole textile and I just, I loved it.
27:44What I really enjoyed is that you had a different perspective from everybody else.
27:48I mean the fringing with the geometry and the ease of this.
27:52I absolutely adore it.
27:53I just wish the top was a little more resolved.
27:56Okay.
27:57It doesn't work but it's great except it's hideous.
28:02Like I can't look at it, you know.
28:04I don't think this is the ugliest piece on the runway at all.
28:07When you talked about the winds, all those little pieces gave it a lot of movement.
28:11I really responded to it.
28:12Where I think this falls short is where it lands on her leg and on her arms.
28:18But I think you did a fabulous job.
28:21Anthony.
28:22I selected the Milky Way.
28:24We all know Anthony does even wear it.
28:26But I thought this might be fun to take a chance with pants, but also put that volume
28:31and that structure in that I enjoy.
28:33This was the design that just kept on giving.
28:36From every single angle it was something new and exciting.
28:40This is so much fun.
28:41And I thought it was such an original thought giving this sort of extended peplum down the
28:46side of a pant.
28:47Can I see the back too please?
28:49You did not give up her anatomy either.
28:52I think there are amazing avant-garde parts to it.
28:55I am very conflicted about the top.
28:58I'm having a hard time seeing it as something other than spin art.
29:03You said something earlier, which I just love, which is, take a chance with pants.
29:08I'm going to make that my life's goal.
29:10It's going to be my model for life.
29:12Take a chance with pants.
29:14We're going to move on to Marilyn.
29:17So we got to go to the planetary.
29:20They would show the orbit and when he would move it, the orbit would create these lines
29:25and the lines would cross.
29:26And I just love the idea of the orbit holding everything together.
29:29With this in white, with the eye makeup and the hair, it is divine.
29:34If I saw a collection that just was one dress like this after another in different colors,
29:38I would stand and cheer at the end of it.
29:41But you can't give us this dress every week from now on either.
29:44Okay, oh yes.
29:45We need to know that this idea can broaden out.
29:47Okay.
29:48But this week, it's gorgeous.
29:50I love how we are also able to see the handiwork.
29:54You know, you see the seams and they're actually a feature of the dress.
29:57Beautifully done.
29:58Bravo.
29:59Roshasha.
30:01She looks dangerous.
30:04She looks like a Bond villain.
30:06I think it's exquisite.
30:09Moving on to Joshua.
30:10I chose to go with Pluto.
30:12It's the coldest of all the planets.
30:15So I played with this idea of a layer of nitrogen ice that I created out of many,
30:20many bags of glue sticks and an arm workout.
30:24The glue stick?
30:25What an amazing idea.
30:27I just don't know if you needed everything else.
30:29Can you talk me through what the thought behind all of that was?
30:33That's it, baby.
30:34That's it.
30:36That's what you're going to get today.
30:39Joshua, this is next-level gay .
30:44My gay gene is saying, yes!
30:47It's outrageous and crazy, and it's so wrong.
30:50It's right.
30:52There's something very displeasing about it,
30:54and I think it has mostly to do with the color of it, you know?
30:57It's kind of like 1970s motel.
30:59You know, that room that you go into and want to check out immediately.
31:02Like, that's the color scheme.
31:04So I'm curious.
31:05What made you choose this color scheme?
31:07I really think it was literal to the actual planet itself,
31:11so it could have been a bit more simple.
31:13But are we not here to show you what is in our, you know,
31:18vernacular of design?
31:19I think we all want to see what you're capable of,
31:22but maybe not all in one look.
31:24This isn't all I can do, though, even though it's in one look.
31:26I know, of course, and I've seen you do great things.
31:28No, you've, yes, for weeks on end,
31:30and I think the thing is I can, you know, continue to show that.
31:33So I feel like you're a little defensive in this critique.
31:35Well, of course, because...
31:36So I just want to know where that...
31:37But I chose to go here because this is what I had.
31:39If I wanted to do a black jersey dress with this over it,
31:42we would be standing here and be having a much different conversation.
31:46However, this is what you get today.
31:48So you either want to see more...
31:52Or we can, you know...
31:54Okay, then let's move on.
31:55Fantastic.
31:56Hi, Kimberly.
31:58Hi.
31:59So my inspiration was the neutron star,
32:02and I was inspired more so by how it's formed,
32:05which is by the gravitational collapse of a massive star.
32:08Now, I don't really know what that means, but...
32:12I just wanted to play with the collapsing,
32:15and that kind of spoke to me.
32:17There are things about it that I really like.
32:19The top of the dress would work as the top of the gown,
32:21but I'm not sure it would be the most kind of avant-garde thing I've ever seen.
32:25Okay.
32:26You know?
32:27The overall design just felt a little bit confused,
32:29and to me avant-garde needs to be a very, very strong direct thought.
32:34I don't take this the wrong way, but I really want the cape for a tree skirt.
32:38I think it is...
32:39Take it.
32:40It's a beautiful piece.
32:41It's just, it doesn't work together for me.
32:43I'm getting a Quentin Tarantino villainess who wears a cape that's deadly.
32:49I can live with that.
32:50Thank you, Kimberly.
32:53Stanley.
32:54So, my inspiration this week was solar eclipse,
32:57and that's when the moon covers the sun completely and blacks it out.
33:01So, I made a romper, a blouse, and this coat.
33:05I think the proportions are just wonderful.
33:08I love the size of this bow you have,
33:11and I love the way you've ignored giving her a waist,
33:14and yet at the same time, it gives me everything.
33:17Well, thank you.
33:18I want to say that avant-garde isn't merely exaggeration, but you've done it in such an incredibly kind of witty, light-hearted way, it becomes irresistible.
33:29The only conflict that I have with it, I feel like it's sort of kind of wearable.
33:32Like, I could see Gwen Stefani going to brunch in this.
33:35Well done, Stanley.
33:37Thank you for all your work this week, designers.
33:39You've given the judges and I a lot to discuss, so please wait in the backstage lounge, and we will call you out soon.
33:44Oh.
33:45Hello.
33:46Why are everybody with a sad face?
33:47Let's hear everyone's critique.
33:48Well, mine was torturous.
33:49There were way too many ideas going on.
33:50I was a little spicy.
33:51I let them have it.
33:52Here's the deal.
33:53We know that at some point you're going to be in front of the judges, you're going to have to listen to their critique.
34:08You may not like it, you may like it.
34:11You have every right to defend your garment, but you don't have to be crass about it.
34:15If this is too much, then I'll pull back and you will get a gorgeous little LBD next week.
34:21I have a very different aesthetic from Georgina and from Isaac, and I want to hear the good with the bad.
34:29I just can't always stomach horrible critiques if they're not warranted.
34:34And that took a lot of work.
34:35I said, this is what you get this week.
34:37If it's not good enough, then it's not good enough.
34:40Avant-garde.
34:43It's always a tricky one for us to judge.
34:46We had some great looks and then some not so great looks.
34:50So let's start with the looks that we loved.
34:53Let's start with Marilyn.
34:54Nothing we haven't seen from her before, but how perfect for this week and how brilliantly she executed.
34:59I just worry that she's a one trick pony.
35:01But it's such a good trick.
35:03It was really something else.
35:05She turned that woman into a cubist painting.
35:07I thought it was a really chic effortless piece.
35:10My only critique would be she had the piece going down this lake here.
35:14I'd love to see a little bit more up here just to just for my eye.
35:18You're really designing this for yourself, aren't you?
35:20I certainly am.
35:21Yes.
35:22Let's move on to Anthony's look.
35:25She came across as a warrior.
35:27I kept seeing that breastless breastplate as armor.
35:30I loved it.
35:31I did.
35:32No, it was really impactful.
35:33And that thought of the trousers I thought was incredible.
35:37The story was all about hips and her back.
35:39I loved it.
35:40I thought the pants were amazing.
35:42I just could not really get past the splatter paint.
35:47Let's talk about Stanley.
35:48Dreamy.
35:49That was absolutely dreamy.
35:50Yeah.
35:51And I felt like it was such a clear thought.
35:53Mm-hmm.
35:54Down to the fencing mask, it almost looked like she took her fascinator, you know, and
35:58she just could have plopped it right over her face.
36:00I just was really blown away by Stanley's willingness to go simple and yet still tell a very clear
36:06story.
36:07That sort of matte fabric even told more of the story because it said, you know, I don't
36:12need to be blingy.
36:14I've got this silhouette here.
36:15It was this tiny attention to details that spoke so much.
36:19So let's move on to our least successful looks this week.
36:25I would like to start with Joshua.
36:27Fine.
36:28He, he bites back, whatever.
36:30At the end of the day, any designer that walks into a fabric store and comes out with
36:34those fabrics, he's a serious talking to.
36:36For an avant-garde challenge.
36:37You know?
36:38Mm-hmm.
36:39For any challenge.
36:40Each of those individual things that he brought into this thing might have been okay, but
36:45altogether, it looked like junk.
36:47She really looked like a space queen from a porno movie.
36:50Mm!
36:51That's it!
36:52That's exactly right.
36:53The end of the scene, too.
36:55Okay, let's move on to Kimberly.
37:00Oh, dear.
37:01The more it stood in front of me and I looked at it, the more I actually really liked it.
37:05It's funny.
37:06No, you're saying that because you're so cross with Joshua.
37:08No.
37:09Yeah.
37:10It's not true.
37:11And how much better it would have been if that bodysuit hadn't been showing on the other
37:15shoulder, if I'd had a clean shoulder.
37:17And wear pants or something.
37:18And just anything.
37:19Yeah.
37:20And it was, I'm sorry, it made me feel claustrophobic.
37:23It seemed like a lot of things just thrown into a bag and shaken and then thrown onto
37:28a model.
37:29Let's talk about Fabio's look.
37:33I thought the textile was incredible.
37:35It was just he forgot the design of the garment.
37:38Except, in this case, his thinking was sort of anti-fringe fringe.
37:43And I really think that's a smart and very avant-garde thing to think.
37:47Yeah, but you can't forget design.
37:49I feel that the hem of this piece, had it been cut at a diagonal, you'd give me more
37:54body, more of a shape.
37:55I did actually give it a high score and I liked it.
37:57But I hear what you all are saying about substance over style.
38:03So between Kimberly and Joshua.
38:05Looking at these objectively, I feel like Joshua had better ideas, if there weren't too
38:11many, than Kimberly just had zero ideas.
38:14If I were going to wear one of those outfits, out of just pure s*** and giggles, I would
38:20go with Joshua's.
38:21That's funny.
38:22I mean, we're really breaking this down.
38:23There is a certain amount of sewing that went in and creativity that went into Joshua's.
38:28Whereas I feel with Kimberly, there is just a lot of cutting going on.
38:32I think Joshua's is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen, so maybe it should win.
38:37Yeah, there you go.
38:38I can't tell.
38:39You know, like, if it's avant-garde, it's so weird.
38:41But does avant-garde meet ugly?
38:42I don't think so.
38:43Do we know what we're going to do?
38:45Yes.
38:46Okay.
38:47Let's bring him out.
38:53Designers, one of you is the winner of this week's challenge, and one of you will be eliminated
38:57tonight.
39:06Anthony, your avant-garde design has put you through to next week.
39:10Yay.
39:16Stanley and Merline.
39:19One of you is the winner of this week's challenge.
39:22Whose next professional collection will have their models dressed in Marquesa's shoe line?
39:28The winning designer is...
39:34Stanley.
39:35Woo!
39:39Congrats, Stanley.
39:41And well done to you too, Merline.
39:44Thanks, judges.
39:45Bye.
39:46The halfway mark, so, you know, it's good to have two wins.
39:49I feel proud.
39:50Stanley the man.
39:51Yay!
39:52I feel like a winner.
39:56I feel like I could be a contender.
39:58Oh, my Stanley won.
40:03Congratulations, beautiful man.
40:05I'm so being proud.
40:06Fabio, you had a low score, but you are safe.
40:09I love you.
40:10I love you too much.
40:11I love you too much.
40:15Joshua, Kimberly, you're both extremely talented designers, we know.
40:20But only one of you can stay.
40:22The designer eliminated tonight is...
40:26Kimberly.
40:27Kimberly.
40:28That means, Joshua, you are safe.
40:41We will see you next week.
40:42You can leave the runway.
40:43Kimberly.
40:44Kimberly, thank you so much for joining us on All Stars.
40:46Thank you all for your... for everything.
40:48We're proud of you, darling.
40:49We are.
40:55I'm a little disappointed that I'm gone from the competition, but, you know, I didn't
41:03have the most forward-thinking, avant-garde look.
41:06K-N!
41:07K-N!
41:08Who's gonna be my meme?
41:11Oh, yes.
41:12My beautiful girl.
41:15After this, it's back to what I normally do.
41:18My sister and I, we run Kimberly Golsan.
41:20We sell online and we're looking forward to new customers.
41:23Next, on Project Runway All Stars, I've invited you to celebrate a cultural icon, Isaac Mizrahi.
41:33How are you, kids?
41:35Welcome to my world.
41:37I know I get very feisty and defensive.
41:40Yeah.
41:41Wait till you get in the industry and then it really does affect your business.
41:44I'm dead.
41:45I don't know what's up with Ken.
41:47A child is getting moody.
41:49Just go stitch the dress.
41:52When you are great, you are really great.
41:56But it looks like a pajama party.
41:58Bonus!
41:59Thanks!
42:00I love you!
42:01Thanks!
42:14I'll find a smile if I'm ready for it.
