00:01Previously on Project Runway All-Stars.
00:04Designers, each of you must create an elegant look
00:07that celebrates your woman's inner superhero.
00:10No way.
00:12There just may be a taste issue.
00:14That cape is and that dress is designed to match.
00:18I'm concerned about you.
00:19I can make a dress out of baseball.
00:21I can send a look down the runway.
00:23The back neckline on that thing, man,
00:30that is pretty damn masterful.
00:32Nobody does proportion like you.
00:33Thank you so much.
00:34This is just gorgeous.
00:35The winner of this week's challenge is...
00:38Fabio!
00:40Yay!
00:42Merlin, that's seeming.
00:44It's kind of getting a little repetitive.
00:46This fabric, to me, feels more appropriate for making curtains.
00:50You spent so much time making a textile,
00:52you didn't focus on the rest of your dress.
00:55The designer eliminated tonight is...
00:58Amanda.
01:01This is Project Runway All-Stars.
01:12Good morning, designers.
01:14Good morning, Alyssa.
01:15So this week, we are honored to be working
01:18with a very special guest.
01:21She has collaborated with fashion icons
01:23Jean-Paul Gaultier and Zac Ozan.
01:26This actress, singer, and dancer has appeared in
01:30and influenced hundreds of films,
01:33and is one of the most famous and timeless stars in Hollywood.
01:37I'm just randomly pulling out ideas out of my head.
01:40I don't know if it's Rihanna, Katy Perry, or who.
01:43And she is joining me on the runway to set your challenge.
01:47Here she is.
01:53Oh!
01:54Oh, my God!
02:02So cool.
02:03Betty Boop, welcome to Project Runway All-Stars.
02:05Aw!
02:06Thanks, Alyssa.
02:07Hi, Project Runway All-Star designers.
02:11I'm Betty Boop.
02:12I love Betty Boop.
02:14I grew up watching Betty Boop at my grandmother's house
02:17every single Saturday.
02:18I'm obsessed with Betty Boop.
02:19I used to have this Betty Boop clock in my room
02:22that, you know, like, every time you take her hip squat.
02:25Yeah.
02:26I want to inspire the young girls in Hollywood today,
02:29so I need something that really stands out.
02:32I would like you to design a young, chic Hollywood outfit.
02:37My fashion style is glamorous and playful.
02:41And though I don't like to take things too seriously,
02:44I always want to be at the forefront of fashion.
02:48And she has an adventurous spirit,
02:50so I know she could work the runway in anything.
02:53The winning designer will help in creating
02:56a modern-day collection for me
02:59that will be sold as part of my Betty Boop line.
03:02Ooh!
03:04And I can't wait to wear the winning design.
03:07Cute.
03:10I think Betty Boop's a really cool client,
03:12and I'm most excited about the prize, honestly.
03:15The opportunity to have your designs in a store,
03:18that alone is a great opportunity.
03:20And Betty rocks.
03:21That is an amazing prize.
03:23Thank you, Betty.
03:24Designers, your attention-grabbing outfits
03:26from modern-day Betty Boop will be walking this runway tomorrow.
03:31Your fabric budget is $200 each,
03:34so we are going to send you off to Mood to sketch,
03:37and I will see you tomorrow.
03:38Good luck.
03:39Good luck, everybody!
03:40Ba-boop-ba-doop!
03:41Let's go, Betty!
03:44All right, Betty.
03:47All right, guys, 30 minutes to sketch.
03:52Betty Boop always stay young,
03:54and so I want to keep it young and fresh.
03:57I know I want to have volume on one side,
03:59and structure on the other side.
04:01Fashion-forward, very comfortable, but yet sexy.
04:05So Betty Boop tells us that her fashion sense
04:07is glamorous and playful,
04:09so I'm sketching a little romper
04:11with a mini-dress over it.
04:13Really short shorts,
04:14and sleeveless with a beaded collar.
04:16I'm just going to, like, the Nickelodeon Awards,
04:18or the Teen Choice Awards.
04:19I could see you doing that.
04:20The way that I'm thinking is, like,
04:21how I dress a vintage piece
04:22makes it, like, a high-end piece.
04:23Yeah.
04:24I kind of want this to come up
04:25and come into a choper.
04:26Everyone can band together
04:27and consult with one another.
04:28I don't need other people's ideas.
04:30I don't need other people's ideas.
04:32I don't want this to come up
04:33and come into a choper.
04:34Everyone can band together
04:36and consult with one another.
04:38I don't need other people's ideas.
04:41I'm working on a spin on the logo
04:43of I Heart New York,
04:45but I'm using Betty's face as the heart,
04:47and the bottom's going to be
04:49a very slim-fitted silhouette.
04:51All right, guys.
04:52It's 30 minutes to shop.
04:53Let's do it.
04:54I ended up on the bottom last week,
04:57and it was not a good feeling at all.
04:59Knock it out, Edmund.
05:00All right.
05:01I need to get focused.
05:02I've got to bring it this next challenge.
05:04I find this amazing neoprene,
05:06which is good for my design.
05:09And I don't even like color like that.
05:11It's beautiful.
05:12I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone,
05:13which I definitely am doing
05:14with the color palette.
05:15Hopefully, I can kill it with this.
05:17I want these colors.
05:18You like that?
05:19Yeah.
05:20Thank you, baby.
05:2150 cents.
05:23Last week, I was safe.
05:24I love my design,
05:25but the judges didn't respond to it,
05:27so this week,
05:28I'm going to try to push it a little bit.
05:30Where is the help at?
05:31I'm looking for neoprene
05:33because it's a fabric
05:34you can easily manipulate.
05:36To me, that fits perfect
05:37with the design that I have in my mind.
05:39I find a turquoise fabric.
05:41I think I'm going to go with this.
05:42Betty Boots.
05:43Little red dress needs a little break.
05:45Okay, guys.
05:46Ten minutes.
05:47Wait, wait.
05:48Can I get to a bin?
05:49I never even worked with stripes before.
05:50I don't use stripes at all ever.
05:52Really, really, really cute,
05:54but I need to push myself and take risks.
05:58And then on my way to the register,
05:59I saw this whole bin of polka dots.
06:01I'm like, I just have to,
06:02just to be safe.
06:03I think it'll be really fun.
06:05Thank you, Moo.
06:06Thank you, Moo.
06:07Thank you, Moo.
06:08Thank you, Moo.
06:13Betty Boop.
06:14Oh!
06:15Betty Boop!
06:16Oh, look at her.
06:17How sweet.
06:26Josh, were you cutting out of Betty Boop?
06:28Yeah.
06:29So cool.
06:30Thank God.
06:31This five-and-a-half-foot structure of Betty
06:34is standing in the workroom,
06:35because I needed to get the silhouette of her hair
06:39and the shape of her face.
06:41I'm making a little pattern so that I can cut Betty's head
06:44out of leather.
06:45I can get a great graphic for the T-shirt.
06:48Thanks, Betty.
06:51I'm surprised nobody got red fabric.
06:53Same.
06:54She's been wearing red for over 50 years.
06:55That's her favorite damn color, though.
06:57I'm dressing Betty Boop like she's going to the BET Awards.
07:04This is a workout.
07:05This stuff, heavier than the mud.
07:09Oh, it's so beautiful.
07:10You like that?
07:11Oh, I love it.
07:12I love that you cut it on the bias.
07:14So is it a two-piece?
07:15Yeah, it's going to be two pieces.
07:16Work!
07:17Two-piece!
07:18Three, with a panty.
07:24I like the sequence.
07:25It's just for the top.
07:26Oh, okay.
07:27The dress is not flushed out yet.
07:29But the jacket's good.
07:31I don't know if Betty Boop's ready for architecture.
07:34Make her ready.
07:35She ain't ready.
07:36Competition's getting really fierce.
07:38I have to step up my game.
07:39So even the fabric choices that I bought,
07:41I'm just like, oh my gosh, I'm out of my comfort zone.
07:44Merlin, what kind of fabric that is?
07:46It's like a neoprene mesh.
07:48I like that.
07:49The idea that I have, it's kind of fitted to the side,
07:52so you can see her sexy body.
07:53But then I was just like, you know what?
07:55I need an umph.
07:56Maybe I should bring an element of print,
07:58because she's flirty, she's young.
08:00Do you think it's like too much texture together?
08:02No, not at all.
08:03You put that up there for a reason.
08:04That's true.
08:05You don't want to be safe.
08:06You know what I'm saying?
08:07You want to push it a little bit.
08:08This is fun.
08:11This is going to be a fun one.
08:12I'm doing something with stripes,
08:14which I think is really iconic.
08:16I want to make a fitted short dress.
08:18I like where you were going with the stripes,
08:20how they're going in different places like that, though.
08:22It's tricky.
08:23Stripes are tricky.
08:25They are.
08:26I could never with a stripe.
08:28Wow.
08:29Leave it to you.
08:30Oh, someone's got to.
08:31I've never worked with mitering stripes before.
08:35Ugh, this is going to be really hard.
08:38Line these up.
08:39If you don't line up the seams,
08:41the garment ends up looking really cheap.
08:44What was I thinking?
08:45Just cutting them alone is going to take forever.
08:48That sucks.
08:52It looks like a, what's that flower, an orchid?
08:54That's kind of the effect.
08:55And then the material kind of goes with that.
08:57Yeah.
08:58Looks good.
08:59That looks like a vagina.
09:00Yeah.
09:01Then I like how you got the print.
09:04You just let it kind of be the center.
09:06Yeah.
09:10Do I have a clear idea of who Betty Boop is?
09:12I'd like to say yes, but I'm not sure.
09:15Edmund, why would you buy that McQueen inspired fabric?
09:19It's Betty Boop.
09:20Like not like outer space queen from the night
09:24that eats your kids and abducts babies and cats.
09:28This is all stars.
09:30I think about that fact.
09:31No one wants to be in the bottom
09:33and I definitely do not want to go home.
09:38Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
09:40It looks more like a bathrobe.
09:43Why are you making a maternity dress?
09:45It's not finished.
09:46Nothing about it looks like maternity to me.
09:49It needs sex appeal.
09:51Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
09:59Now you're getting it.
10:00I got to do like Merlene.
10:01I got to talk to myself now.
10:02Don't do it.
10:03Once you go, you can't come back.
10:04I got to go there or go home.
10:07The print that I'm working with is very colorful,
10:10but I don't want the print to overpower my design.
10:13So I decide to switch it up a little bit
10:16to flip the fabric and create my own textile,
10:18something a little less colorful.
10:20This is beautiful the way you make this look like texture.
10:23All right, I appreciate it.
10:24Yeah.
10:25Edmund loves black and white.
10:26Like that's his go-to color.
10:27So I think he's kind of veering towards something
10:29that's safe opposed to taking a risk and trusting his gut.
10:33Lee, Lee, Lee.
10:35Looking around the room, these designs are really, really chic,
10:38but they look a little old for what the challenge is.
10:41They look more like Aunt Betty Boop than Betty Boop.
10:46I think my design has a youthful quality to it.
10:48It's playful.
10:49It's flirty.
10:50Oh, I have something to get going on the sewing machine now.
10:53Finally.
10:55A lot of the girls in young Hollywood will respond to it.
10:57So I think it's good.
10:58I think it's good.
11:04Hi, designers.
11:05This is really exciting.
11:06Betty Boop is a Hollywood icon.
11:08And we put young Hollywood icons on the cover of Mary Claire all the time.
11:12Zendaya, Hailee Steinfeld.
11:14Betty Boop would totally hang with these girls.
11:16So your talent this week is young Hollywood chic.
11:19And I can't wait to see what you're working on.
11:21Hi, Char.
11:22Hi, Anne.
11:23What does young Hollywood chic mean to you?
11:25The color is bold and a little edgy.
11:28The silhouette is young.
11:29How short are you thinking?
11:31Definitely above the knee.
11:32What I see so far, I'm getting a little bit of sock hop.
11:35The top feels modern.
11:36I have yet to finish the bottom, so...
11:38Got some more work to do.
11:39Good luck.
11:40All right, thank you.
11:41Hmm.
11:42I'm not sure about these two fabrics.
11:43But I feel like if I made it an all-blue dress, I don't know if it's missing that vu-vu-va-va.
11:48Once you make it a one-tone dress, it's all about the structure and the shapes.
11:52The shapes, the silhouette.
11:53True, that's so true.
11:54And that's your strength.
11:55That is my strength.
11:56Based on Anne's critique, I'm thinking of all the ideas that I can do with blue.
12:00I'm gonna focus on doing this asymmetric drape.
12:03I'm making sort of like a 40s romper.
12:06It's gonna have a really high collar, sleeveless, with a shift over it.
12:10A dress?
12:11Uh-huh.
12:12Do you use this side or this side?
12:13It's a lot of fabric, Stanley.
12:14I know.
12:15I think she could wear one or the other.
12:17How about if I make it and then decide?
12:19That sounds like a good plan.
12:20Okay, thanks, Anne.
12:21I think it needs sex appeal.
12:23I totally agree with you, but I'm not cutting into it because after I cut, I can go back
12:27into it.
12:28Okay.
12:29It needs sex appeal.
12:30It looks more like a bathrobe.
12:33It's very classy.
12:36Just wanna make sure you don't keep it so classic that it just sort of disappears.
12:40This is all covered with this double-faced satin, and that will be the key.
12:45Because this fabric alone could be a little trampy.
12:49At first, I pulled a fabric from Mood that I really liked, but I have to take into consideration
12:55Betty Boop.
12:56I think all of the color I had would have been a little bit too much.
12:58So I reversed the fabric.
12:59Just out of curiosity, can I see your old fabric?
13:02That's pretty.
13:03Yeah, it's very pretty.
13:04Wasn't working?
13:05No, not so much.
13:07I'm gonna miss that.
13:08I like this fabric.
13:09She really likes the fabric that I'm not using.
13:13It somewhat puts a little doubt into what I'm creating.
13:16If I was Edmond, I would throw my in the trash.
13:20I love the idea of our I Heart New York shirt, and I made this really cute little Betty.
13:26You've set yourself a challenge in creating a very street look, so you've gotta elevate
13:31it.
13:32Right.
13:33We'll see if you can do it.
13:34Good luck, Joshua.
13:36Boop-boop-ba-doop.
13:37Ann mentions the look being a little street, and I think that's really where I'm going here.
13:41I'm either gonna nail this, or I'm gonna sink on this one.
13:45This gray just really reads work to me.
13:48I'm not seeing young Hollywood in it.
13:51This just has a certain sexiness to it.
13:53Good thing I have the polka dot, because polka dots are nothing but, like, young and fun.
13:56Good luck.
14:00Ann is not fond of this gray in my stripe at all.
14:04I only have one yard of the polka dot.
14:06I'm not sure how I'm gonna finish this garment.
14:09Designers, almost all of you have the chic part of young Hollywood chic down.
14:14What I'm not seeing is the young part.
14:17Keep pushing yourselves to make it fresh and surprising.
14:20Oh, and there's a message from Betty Boop's friend coming soon.
14:23Wait a minute.
14:24Who go for it?
14:25You can't leave us on that note.
14:27You're on your own, kids.
14:30Laura, please don't let this be a twist or another challenge or anything that's gonna throw
14:36my night off.
14:37Well, blow me down.
14:39It's the Project Runway All Scars.
14:42You probably didn't nose it, but I made me Hollywood debut in a Betty Boop cartoon.
14:50We goes way back.
14:52I just wanted to wish ya good luck on this challenge.
14:56And just remember, Betty is a sexy girl.
14:59Once Popeye says that Betty Boop is sexy, I'm like, alright, it's time to like sex this up.
15:11What you think, Evan?
15:12Oh, those are dope.
15:13I grabbed these really pretty rainbow shoes from the Intermix accessory wash.
15:22It'll add just a pop of sass to the look.
15:26And was right.
15:30The prim doesn't make it feel like very modern.
15:33So I scratched that idea and now I'm making an all blue dress.
15:37I look dope, Merlene.
15:39But designing sexy for me, it's hard.
15:43I don't see myself as like a sexy girl.
15:45You know, I think I'm just Merlene, very quirky, very fun.
15:48So when I design garments, I don't think like that.
15:50So I think sexy is gonna be hard for me in this competition.
15:53You got it.
15:54You got it.
15:55I think as designers, we grow so much.
16:00You know, it's like, you're always evolving.
16:03So when you see something you've done from a past collection or past season,
16:07you know, you just kind of like, I'm not that person anymore.
16:10I know I'm doing my strongest body of work on this season.
16:13You know, this season is really pushing me creatively and I feel like it's the competition.
16:19Yeah, I totally agree.
16:21I mean, you can't work with this caliber of designers and not feel, you know, the pressure to push yourself up.
16:27Keep pushing it and step up.
16:28Step it up.
16:29I've been safe for five weeks and that's fantastic.
16:33But I'm crying for a critique.
16:36I need to know what they think about this look, about looks moving forward.
16:40And I hope that this is the garment that gets me there.
16:44Why are you making a maternity dress?
16:46This look like a maternity dress?
16:48Is that shade?
16:50It's not finished.
16:52Char, I like these seams.
16:54Nothing about it looks like maternity to me.
16:57And I ain't finished.
16:58Ken?
16:59I just have this excessive amount of fabric in the front that's just not acting right.
17:03The particular neoprene that Char pulled was a little too heavy for this challenge.
17:09There are different weights of neoprene.
17:11And honestly, she's going to torture this fabric and I see her doing it right before my eyes.
17:15And it's looking a hot ass mess.
17:17You see, I got all this extra fabric, right?
17:19It's just not flowing.
17:20Like this look natural.
17:21This look forced.
17:22OK.
17:23I got to figure it out.
17:24I'm going to make you another garter this week.
17:30So I'm thinking like she's hanging with the Taylor Swift squad.
17:34And this will go here.
17:36So cute.
17:37I feel so much better having it on you because I've never done stripes before.
17:44I have my bodice finished and I have no skirt yet.
17:48So I take the polka dot fabric and I just tie it around her waist and I'm like, boom,
17:52I'm using the polka dot.
17:53It was so much stripe, stripe, stripe, stripe, but I think that's really cool.
17:57I like this sculptural effect going on up here and I need to finish the textile.
18:01She looks actually really good in it, but I decide, you know what?
18:05I'm not able to go with this one either.
18:07After the evaluation with Ann and as I thought more about it, I decide to flip this and use
18:12the color print.
18:13You can stay right there.
18:14All right.
18:15I'm just happy with look center.
18:17Top portion fits the model, but the bottom is just, I'm kind of trying to get neoprene
18:22to have a drape when really that's not what it's supposed to do.
18:25That's a good lesson to learn.
18:27It's just bad when you learn a lesson on the design that can send you home.
18:30All right.
18:31Yikes.
18:32See you tomorrow.
18:33Y'all see you tomorrow.
18:34Thank you so much.
18:35Y'all see you tomorrow.
18:36Good morning.
18:37Bye.
18:44You went back.
18:45Edmund, how many dresses you made today?
18:47You gotta do what you gotta do.
18:49I look over the room and I see Edmund draping this print dress.
18:53Before he had a white dress with train tracks on it.
18:56Now he's back to the sprint.
18:58Uh-huh.
18:59He's really, really struggling with this challenge.
19:01Guys, we got one hour.
19:02One hour left.
19:08Very, very, very cute.
19:09Thanks, Helen.
19:10This is so fabulous.
19:12That is everything.
19:13Oh my God.
19:14You should do it.
19:15Yeah.
19:16Oh.
19:17My top is fully finished and it damn well better be because I've spent enough time on it.
19:22I don't even have a skirt ready.
19:24So I have a lot of work cut out for me tomorrow.
19:27I might as well lay it out and then just run in.
19:29I could be screwed without having a bottom.
19:31All right, guys.
19:32It's time.
19:33Damn it.
19:35Bye.
19:38Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
19:41Betty's not gonna wear a dress that looks like a tissue that you blew your nose in.
19:45This damn neoprene though.
19:47Sharks look is the hot ass mess.
19:49Baby, listen.
19:53All right.
19:54Woo!
19:55All right, girls.
19:56It's the morning of the runway and not only do I have to make an eight panel skirt,
20:05but I also want to insert seven godets.
20:08So this is gonna be the two and a half hours of sitting in the brother sewing room.
20:13I just have to trust that I can sew like a madman.
20:17Boom.
20:18I am feeling anxious.
20:20One, the model hasn't even been in this particular dress.
20:23Two, I have to do hemming, hand tacking, and just make sure that the entire dress is complete.
20:30Hi!
20:31Hi.
20:32Try it on.
20:33All right.
20:35That wasn't intentional, but I think it looks kind of cool.
20:38I don't know how I managed to drape the skirt the way I did, but it's just enough legs, just enough skin.
20:43See, that's where you have to watch out.
20:45There's Goble pulling out tricks at the last minute.
20:48Okay.
20:53This damn neoplane, though .
20:58I love the color, and I like the sharp ruffle, but that bottom part is, baby, listen.
21:04Char's look is horrible.
21:05The draping is a mess.
21:07If I was her, I'd just go pack my and escort my own self out of the building before my dress even walked in the way.
21:13Cool.
21:14I love.
21:19Hi.
21:20Welcome to the Rodeal glam room.
21:21I really want to play up and bring out her beauty.
21:23I'm going to use the Rodeal glow stick.
21:25Okay.
21:26I like a little glow.
21:27I'm thinking dewy, natural.
21:29Rodeal makes a gorgeous blush.
21:31Okay.
21:32It's called Copacabana.
21:33Gorgeousness.
21:34Yes.
21:35Welcome to the Rodeal hair salon.
21:41I'm thinking like a flat top.
21:42Ultra.
21:43Really severe.
21:44Tight on the side.
21:45We'll work it out, and we'll use a shimmer spray on her.
21:47Okay.
21:48You know, I was really thinking this finger wave, but I think that might be too costumy.
21:53Maybe we can make them like really big, ultra, ultra slick, ultra tight.
21:57Sounds so Betty Boop.
21:58Okay, you guys, we have one hour, one hour to runway.
22:03So I still have to finish the drapery of the right-hand side of the garment.
22:09And so now I'm like sewing her in.
22:11At the same time, the hair lady is like doing hair.
22:14It's crazy.
22:15Don't know about this.
22:17I've been putting all this time and effort into this dress because I want it to look really cool.
22:21And I complete it, and I put it over the romper, and I hate it.
22:26This is going to be way too tight for what I really want to do.
22:29It's too much fabric.
22:30It's too heavy.
22:31It did everything that Anne said it would do.
22:33So I take it off, throw it on the floor.
22:36I get my collar out.
22:37I'll have to glue the beads on.
22:39Hold this for me too.
22:40I'll take that down.
22:43Anthony, Betty's not going to wear a dress that looks like a tissue that you blew your nose in and threw it on her and then stitched it on top of her.
22:52Okay.
22:53Even though I don't always understand everything Malene is doing, I celebrate the fact that she's taking a risk.
23:00The people who are the one note wonders are the people who are probably suffering the most in this competition.
23:05You guys, it's 15 minutes.
23:07Is that too tight? Is that tight enough?
23:11I'm not sure how the judges are going to react.
23:14I'm hoping that they think about the fact that it's something different.
23:19It's vibrant.
23:20It's youthful.
23:21I definitely see Edmund being in trouble based on picking a very untraditional Betty boot print.
23:28Try again.
23:29Okay guys, that's time.
23:30Wait, you got to put the bodysuit on first.
23:32Oh, sorry.
23:33Go.
23:34Oh my God.
23:35This is working for me.
23:38Those are some fun looks.
23:42Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
23:45Young and chic.
23:46We want to see it every week.
23:48She's all about bust waist and all.
23:50The front of it almost looks like saggy balls.
23:54How do I follow that?
23:55Wow.
23:57The winner of Project Runway All Stars will receive a fashion spread of Marie Claire and
24:02a position at the magazine as Contributing Editor.
24:05An inspiring trip for two to fashion capital London, England.
24:09And luxurious skin care and makeup for their debut show and beyond all provided by Rodial.
24:14From Intermix, accessories and styling services to enhance their next collection.
24:19From Brother Sewing and Embroidery, a complete sewing and crafting studio to launch their line.
24:25And to elevate their business and build their brand, a cash prize of $100,000.
24:31Hello.
24:32Yeah.
24:33Wow.
24:34Yeah, that's a moment.
24:35Oh, thank you.
24:36Yeah.
24:37Hello, designers.
24:39Hi.
24:40So this week we were joined by a Hollywood icon.
24:44The first sex symbol of the animated screen, Betty Boop.
24:48She was right here asking you to design a young chic Hollywood outfit.
24:54Here are the judges critiquing your work tonight.
24:56First, co-founder and designer of luxury brand Marquesa, Georgina Chapman.
25:01Hi, designers.
25:02Hi.
25:03Next, one of the most iconic names in American fashion, designer Isaac Mizrahi.
25:08Hi.
25:09Hi.
25:10Hi.
25:11Our guest judge is known for her statement making handbags and accessories, as well as
25:17women's apparel.
25:18She's also an investor on Project Runway fashion startup.
25:22Please welcome back to All Stars, designer Rebecca Minkoff.
25:26Hello.
25:27Hi, designers.
25:28So the winning designer this week will have the opportunity to create a collection for Betty Boop's
25:34new retail line.
25:35Have a great show.
25:36Thanks.
25:38That is so you, Josh.
25:49I think the look is so cool.
25:51The sequins look even better on the runway than they did in the workroom.
25:57It's fun.
25:58It's quirky.
25:59It's playful.
26:00And I think it's spot on Betty.
26:05At this point, I'm glad that I chose the color.
26:15The color really stands out on the runway.
26:18It's not necessarily my best work, and I definitely know that.
26:22But to have this up there, it looks pretty good.
26:25Honestly, I'm not proud of this design.
26:36The bottom is problematic.
26:37I can see it.
26:38I wanted the shapes to be abstract.
26:40Like, I wanted it to be kind.
26:42The fabric choice that I made, it was not good.
26:45So I'm hoping that the judges can appreciate the good things about the design.
26:56I am so in love.
26:58The jumpsuit is super cool.
27:00It has, like, the mesh, and then it's long and wide.
27:04I love it.
27:17This piece stands out.
27:19It kind of looks like a pant from one side and a miniskirt on the other.
27:23Stripes.
27:24They're perfect.
27:25And, like, having the off shoulders, it's kind of, like, mixing masculinity with femininity.
27:31I don't know.
27:32I'm proud of my work this week.
27:41The design looks easy.
27:43It doesn't look fussy.
27:48The beads on the collar sparkle, and it just looks really rich.
27:58My model looks fierce.
27:59I don't typically do movement, but I love the way the bodice is moving.
28:03I'm so clean, Ken.
28:07I'm so glad that I spent so much time moderating my print.
28:20You an invisible zipper specialist or something?
28:23Everything is just perfectly symmetrical and well-balanced.
28:35I'm, like, really proud of this dress.
28:37She looks chic.
28:38I love the color.
28:40I'm happy that I step out of my comfort zone.
28:42I like asymmetric, and I think I did it because the fabric was, like, taking me there.
28:46You did a great job, didn't you?
28:47It looks good.
28:48I love the contrast of the white against the mesh in the black Swiss dot.
29:01I really enjoy the shape.
29:03And she looks lovely.
29:05I think that it looks impeccable on the right way.
29:21Designers, six of you had the highest and lowest scores of the week.
29:26If I call your names, please step forward.
29:29Ken.
29:30Fabio.
29:31Kimberly.
29:32Anthony.
29:33You guys are safe.
29:38Hallelujah.
29:40You can leave the runway.
29:42Good luck, guy.
29:43Designers, one of you is the winner of this week's challenge, and one of you will be eliminated
29:51tonight.
29:58Helen, you're up first.
29:59Tell us about your modern-day look for Betty Boop.
30:01When I thought Betty Boop, I thought it has to be sexy, it has to be fun.
30:04So, with taking an icon, I thought to take two iconic prints and give them, like, a more modern twist.
30:10I love the neckline.
30:12I like the ease of the sarong-style skirt, and I like the polka dot.
30:16That does give me Betty Boop.
30:17I think the stripe on the top, perhaps it's the gray that sort of takes it away from Betty Boop,
30:21for me, is making it a little serious.
30:24I think you struck a good balance this week.
30:26She's like this sort of flat-chested, tall, thin version of Betty Boop.
30:30Rebecca, you're up next.
30:32I think the silhouette's fantastic.
30:34I think where I'm stuck is the top feels very menswear-inspired, which I think is pretty far from Betty Boop.
30:41The lines on the top, I don't care if it's gray.
30:44What you were able to do as far as the cutting of the fabrics, it's just absolutely beautiful.
30:49Thank you so much.
30:50Marilyn!
30:51So, I wanted to do something a little more formal.
30:54And so, this time around, I let the fabric kind of help me create the garment.
30:59How you go from Betty Boop to that dress, I just, I can't see it.
31:03It doesn't give me young Hollywood.
31:05Okay.
31:06You know?
31:07I had on my card, does she know who Betty Boop is?
31:10Really?
31:11It's all about vast waste and ass.
31:13And you're not getting any of those things here.
31:17I almost wonder if you spent, you know, the majority of the time on the front and then you ran out of time,
31:22because the back doesn't feel as well thought out.
31:24Is the back supposed to be?
31:26Mm-hmm.
31:27In my head, that's what's sexiest, showing the lines and the curves of the body.
31:31But you're not getting the lines of the body, because you've got no waste.
31:34Hi, Advent.
31:35Hello.
31:36Tell us about your look for modern-day Betty Boop.
31:38I really wanted to emphasize the waste, yet played with a bit of color.
31:41I think the print really hurt you here.
31:43Really?
31:44Can you turn around?
31:45This fabric feels like something that McQueen did 10 years ago.
31:49And when this dress walked, the front of it almost looked like saggy balls.
31:57Wow.
31:58I like the idea of dresses like this.
32:00It's got to be about contouring the woman's body, but here it's not really happening.
32:04To me, it's like not youthful.
32:07Nobody took any inspiration from that girl.
32:10You know, that one in L.A. or the one in Paris who's wearing thrift clothes.
32:14You know what I mean, right?
32:15They're certainly not wearing dresses like this.
32:17What woman wants to look old?
32:19This is a turning point, you know?
32:21Like, now I'm telling you all, young and chic, we want to see it every week.
32:26How do I follow that?
32:28I don't know.
32:29You can't.
32:30You have to be like a child star, a doll or something.
32:34I feel distracted with the layers in the front, the straps, the neckline.
32:37I feel like you didn't commit to a certain element that could be celebrated.
32:41Okay.
32:42Joshua.
32:43I'm from New York, living in Hollywood now, so I kind of wanted to play on the classic and timeless.
32:48Kind of just saying like, hello, Hollywood.
32:51I'm Betty.
32:52Hi, Joshua.
32:53Hi.
32:54It's been a minute.
32:55It's been a hot second, yes.
32:56You know, I like your look a lot.
32:59She brought anatomy in a different way, and in a non-vulgar way, but a racy way, and that's
33:04not easy.
33:05There's so many layers to this.
33:07There's an athleisure element with the t-shirt, but you've made it luxe.
33:10It celebrates her figure as Betty Boop had an incredible figure.
33:13I love your take on the New York t-shirt.
33:15I think that's really sweet.
33:17And I love the fact that you can see the knicker, but it doesn't feel too much.
33:21It does feel very young to me.
33:23When I think of chic, I don't necessarily think of like a crop top.
33:29Sure.
33:30I know that she's used to being sexy and sophisticated, but they said add a modern twist, so I tried
33:35to keep the silhouette going and use neoprene so it can have stretch.
33:38I love the color of this dress.
33:41But I have to say that's it.
33:42Okay.
33:43The fact that I can see the white underneath is upsetting.
33:46The draping is upsetting.
33:47The neckline is upsetting.
33:48I want to know what happened in the workroom.
33:50You all came out with these draped dresses.
33:53Where did that come from?
33:54It's such a bizarre place to go with Betty Boop.
33:57I started with it being flowy and then...
34:00Flowy and neoprene?
34:01Well, I haven't worked with it.
34:03I always used to think outside the box, try something different.
34:05This looks like something maybe out of a freshman student competition.
34:08A neoprene dress that doesn't fit and looks like such a mess.
34:12Okay, Stanley.
34:14Are you scared?
34:15A little bit.
34:16Tell us about your young chic Hollywood look.
34:19I just chose a part that I really want to like sex up and keep it like young, fresh,
34:22young Hollywood.
34:23So I chose the leg, you know, so I came up with the romper.
34:26You've got this play suit idea, which is a little bit quirky.
34:29Can you give us a little spin?
34:31You've contoured the body well.
34:32It gives me that sort of vintage feel of Betty Boop, but modernizing it in a way that
34:38looks relevant right now.
34:40I love the collar.
34:41I think it's very chic.
34:42Thanks.
34:43I think this is a really smart interpretation.
34:46It looks American and classic.
34:49I just wish that it had like maybe a sweetheart neck or something and not this high collar.
34:54I think we just wanted to see more of the sex symbol.
34:57I got to say, I get young and sexy from that.
35:00Me too.
35:01I get young and chic.
35:02Young and chic and sexy.
35:03And I get sexy, but I don't get Betty Boop.
35:05But I mean, there's so much leg.
35:06If she had neckline too, it would be like, I like a Peter Pan collar on Betty Boop.
35:10Me too.
35:11I really do, you know.
35:12Thank you, Stanley.
35:14And thank you to all the designers.
35:16The judges and I have a lot to discuss this week.
35:19So we're going to deliberate and we will call you back soon.
35:22You can wait in the backstage lounge.
35:32Okay.
35:33Oh, sit down.
35:34Oh, you're in the top.
35:35Wait a minute.
35:36I can deal with these facial expressions.
35:38So who's in the top?
35:39Who's in the bottom?
35:40We're crazy about Josh's.
35:41They really, really, really like Stanley.
35:43Helen's as well.
35:44They ripped me a new one.
35:45Like, and they was 100% right.
35:47Like, that fabric got away from me.
35:49And when they didn't rip on her, they ripped on me.
35:51So they ripped two.
35:52No, they ripped three.
35:53Yes.
35:54When Isaac gets upset about something, the man goes off.
35:58One thing he wanted to clarify with everybody, this entire group, young, youthful, moving through the rest of this competition.
36:07So last week, the designers really, like, pushed themselves.
36:11They were out of their comfort zone.
36:13And I feel like this week, I don't know what happened.
36:16I don't know.
36:17Maybe they were just thrown by, like, this idea of being told to be sexy or something.
36:23So we did have some successes, right?
36:25So let's talk about Joshua.
36:26I thought, you know, it was very smart and he got the retro in there whilst keeping it modern and young.
36:32Perhaps a little too young, but it had quirk and it had humor.
36:35I think it was all really well thought out and executed beautifully.
36:38I love that he did separates.
36:40I think what saved this for me and made it so successful was the skirt.
36:44There was an elegance to it, you know?
36:47Let's talk about Helen's look.
36:49You put that on a girl with a very ample chest and a tiny waist, it would look very Betty Booth.
36:55Mm-hmm.
36:56I like her silhouette a lot.
36:57I think the silhouette was great.
36:59But the menswear, I don't know, the suiting fabric in the front, I was so thrown by that.
37:04I think that she pushed herself on this and I appreciated that.
37:09Stanley's was very safe.
37:11I know you guys loved it.
37:12I just felt like it didn't give me Betty Boop.
37:14I didn't get Betty Boop.
37:15I got Hampton's classic.
37:17Maybe, but in a Betty Boop way.
37:20I agree.
37:21I just think there was something very retro about it.
37:24And it felt young to me.
37:27I don't even know where to start with the bottom.
37:29If you take away the context of Betty Boop, the only dress that could possibly survive would be Marlene's.
37:34I agree.
37:35Agreed.
37:36It looked finished.
37:37Yeah.
37:38This whole thing, though, with the ruffle in front of the face.
37:41But there's an intention to that, I think.
37:43It felt like she sort of did know what she was doing.
37:45While the other two just looked like they were watching her, going, maybe we should do that, too.
37:49But I've got the wrong fabric.
37:50I don't know how to do it.
37:52I have no idea what I'm doing.
37:54Right.
37:56Of those three dresses, the worst one is Char.
37:59Yes.
38:00Is she the one we want to send home?
38:01Maybe.
38:02It was neither tight nor loose.
38:04It was that weird in-between that I don't think works for neoprene.
38:07If you're an all-star, you know how to work with almost any fabric.
38:11And if you don't, don't pick it.
38:12Or if you know you're in trouble, exactly.
38:14And wait a second, Rebecca, what is easier to work in than neoprene?
38:18Probably air.
38:22And then we have Edmund's look.
38:24I could eliminate him.
38:25Edmund's just to pick that print in the first place.
38:28It's so clumsy.
38:29I am so offended by that dress.
38:31The back of it looks like Alien turned wrong.
38:34That is not giving that girl anything.
38:38We know who's going home.
38:39Yes.
38:40We're all in agreement?
38:41Mm-hmm.
38:42Okay.
38:43Let's bring him back out.
38:48Designers, one of you is this week's winner.
38:51And one of you will be eliminated tonight.
38:59Stanley, you did a great job.
39:00You are safe.
39:05Helen and Joshua, one of you has the opportunity to be Betty Boop's
39:09new designer.
39:11The winning designer is...
39:15Joshua.
39:19And congratulations to you too, Helen.
39:20Great job.
39:21Thank you so much.
39:22We'll see you both next week.
39:24You can leave the runway.
39:32I won.
39:33Hello, Betty Boop.
39:34Boop-boop-de-doo.
39:37Congratulations.
39:40This is exactly the right path to be taking in this competition.
39:44I really connected with Betty and channeled her, and I'm really thrilled.
39:49Marilyn, you just scraped by.
39:52You are safe.
39:55You can leave the runway.
39:59Char, Edmund, we know that you are both talented designers, but only one of you can stay.
40:05The designer eliminated tonight is...
40:17Char.
40:20Okay.
40:21Edmund, you are safe.
40:23You can leave the runway.
40:24All right.

40:35We loved having you.
40:36Okay.
40:38Wait.

40:40Thank you so much.
40:42Such a pleasure.
40:44Very talented.
40:45Okay.
40:46I'm not gonna lie and say it doesn't hurt to get eliminated.
40:47Like, let's be real.
40:48You just have to take it as it comes and be grateful for the opportunity.
40:52Sharkey.
40:53No.
40:54No.
40:55No.
40:56No.
40:57I'm a fashion designer that was on Project Runway and on All Stars.
41:00Like, how can you be mad at that?
41:02Ugh.
41:03These ain't tears.
41:04I think it's windy in here or something, right?
41:06I think that you can't help but get better when you're working around amazing people.
41:10Like, this is a group of talented designers.
41:12I'm so honored to get to know y'all.
41:14Whether you're from Detroit, Ohio, New York, LA, wherever you're from, follow your dreams.

41:20Bye.
41:21The world will always give you no's.
41:23You have to make it a yes.
41:24So stick with it and live life to the fullest.
41:27No regrets.
41:30Next, on Project Runway All Stars.
41:32The avant-garde challenge is no time to play it safe.
41:35This doesn't seem avant-garde to me at all.
41:37The wheel's been done.
41:38I'm merely adding a spoke.
41:40Watch the sparkle.
41:41Kimberly's motto is ass out.
41:43Battle the street walkers.
41:45I really want the cape for a tree skirt.
41:47It's hideous.
41:48That's it, baby.
41:49That's it.
41:50That's what you're gonna get today.
41:51I feel like you're a little defensive.
41:53Let's move on.
41:54Fantastic.
