Max is shot in his own personal "rear window" while apprehending a KAOS agent. Because he is out of commission whilst his gluteus maximus heals, he must stay at home for a couple weeks. Since the TV is not working properly, he passes the time reading magazines and occasionally looking out his window with a pair of binoculars, to see what is going on in the building across the street. By a strange coincidence, however, the case the Chief and 99 are working upon involves the people in the Greer Industries office across the street.

00:00All right, Kleinschmidt, come out with your hands up.
00:15Kleinschmidt, come out with your hands up.
00:18Maybe if you said please.
00:20Darby, that's a notorious chaos agent up there.
00:22I don't have to be polite to him.
00:25Kleinschmidt, this is your last chance.
00:27We're going to open fire.
00:29Come on out, please.
00:32Come and get me.
00:34What?
00:35Come and get me.
00:37You've got two minutes before we open fire.
00:40We're not really going to open fire, Larrabee.
00:42We've got to take him alive.
00:44Maybe three.
00:46Why do we have to take him alive?
00:48Because Kleinschmidt.
00:50Because Kleinschmidt is our only link to the missing missile guidance blueprints.
00:54We've got to take him alive.
00:55Where's Max?
00:56He's trying to get into the house for the back way.
00:58That's very heroic of him.
01:00Not really, Chief.
01:01He had to go to the bathroom.
01:04All right, Kleinschmidt, this is it.
01:05You've got exactly 15 seconds to come out with your hands up.
01:09Where's the tear gas gun?
01:10It's in the trunk of the car.
01:12Get it.
01:13Cover me.
01:13Come on.
01:22Kleinschmidt, you've got 10 seconds.
01:24Larrabee, come on.
01:40Larrabee, we don't have all day.
01:46Get ready to fire through the window.
01:48Not the window of the car, the window of the house.
01:52Oh.
01:55When I count 10, you fire.
01:57You got it?
01:58Gotcha, Chief.
01:5910.
02:02What did you do that for?
02:04You said 10.
02:05Thank goodness it went over the house.
02:07You fire when I say fire.
02:09And aim lower this time.
02:11Right, Chief.
02:1110, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, fire!
02:27Chief, that was a waste of tear gas.
02:30I searched every room in the house.
02:31There's nobody there.
02:32Max, what about the second story?
02:34What second story?
02:36The one up there.
02:37Oh, that's...
02:41Yes!

03:53WHO IS IT?
04:07IT'S THE CHIEF 99
04:09Just a minute, Chief.
04:18Hi, Chief.
04:20Where's Max?
04:2199, I have something to tell you.
04:24Chief, what happened to Max?
04:26Well, 99, we ran into a little trouble.
04:28We had this chaos agent trapped, and Max...
04:30What hospital is he in?
04:31He's not in the hospital. It was only a flesh wound.
04:33They treated it and released him.
04:36Larrabee's here with him now.
04:37Oh, Max, thank heavens you're safe.
04:40Are you all right?
04:41I'm fine, 99.
04:42Where are you wounded?
04:44Down around South Poplar Street.
04:48Yes, you see, actually, I was wounded in two places, 99.
04:50Down around South Poplar Street and in the...
04:53In the...
04:55Do you know what happens when you jump into a shallow pool?
04:59You hit bottom.
05:00And so did the chaos agent.
05:01Oh, Max.
05:03Come over here. I'll fix you a place to sit down.
05:06Sit down?
05:07I can hardly stand on these crutches.
05:14How about that?
05:17One crutch is shorter than the other.
05:20You're telling me?
05:21When I walk, I limp.
05:23With a limp.
05:24Max, those are not normal crutches.
05:25Actually, they're secret weapons.
05:27Here, let me show you.
05:28In the longer crutch, there's a barrel in the leg.
05:31Now, when you squeeze this handle, the bullet comes out here.
05:34Well, I'll be.
05:35What does the shorter crutch do?
05:37Well, here, let me show you.
05:38When you turn...
05:39Max, are you all right?
05:42I'm okay, Chief.
05:46Could I have my crutch, please?
05:47Oh, sure.
05:49Sorry.
05:50Now, when you turn the handle, it ejects a spike.
05:55Oh, that's fantastic, Chief.
05:57The control lab come up with that?
05:59No, the Department of Sanitation.
06:02Now, Max, until you're completely recovered, I want you to stay home and relax.
06:05Don't worry about a thing.
06:07Oh, okay, Chief.
06:08Listen, do I get sick pay?
06:10Well, you would if we'd filed the application.
06:12Well, why didn't we file the application?
06:14Well, we tried to, Max.
06:15When we got to the space where it asked us to describe the nature of the injury,
06:18we didn't know how to word it.
06:20I don't know how to word it.
06:50I don't know how to word it.
07:20I don't know how to word it.
07:22I don't know how to word it.
07:50Hi, Max. How come the door's open?
07:5799, we've got to get a television repairman up here.
08:00This television remote control unit works on everything but the TV set.
08:04Oh, we'll do it right after lunch.
08:06Everyone at control is asking about you today.
08:10Everybody?
08:11Everybody except Willoughby and Carter.
08:14Willoughby fractured a leg last night.
08:16Well, what about Carter?
08:17It was Carter's leg that Willoughby fractured.
08:18Here are the magazines you wanted.
08:2199, pull up a chair, sit down and talk to me.
08:23I'm going out of my mind. I'm so crazy with boredom.
08:26What'd you do all morning?
08:28Same thing I do every morning.
08:30Same thing I've done every morning for the past week.
08:32I sit in this chair, I look through my binoculars at that building across the street,
08:35then I read a magazine.
08:36Then I look through the binoculars at the building across the street,
08:38then I read another magazine.
08:39And then when I really get bored,
08:41I take the remote control and watch the door open and close.
08:45Well, I've got good news for you, Max.
08:47I hope so, 99, because I'm going out of my mind sitting here.
08:50The doctor says you're much better, and he wants you to start doing some exercises.
08:54Oh, really? What kind of exercises?
08:56He wants you to play musical chairs twice a day.
08:59Forget it.
09:03See anything interesting in the building you crossed the way?
09:06Same old thing I see every day, 99.
09:10Well, you must know every person in every office in that building.
09:13I don't look in every office in that building, 99.
09:17I just look in the office directly across the way.
09:21Why that one?
09:21No reason in particular.
09:29I just don't understand how those blueprints for the new missile guidance system got out of here.
09:34Outside of yourself and Miss Parker, who else has access to your office?
09:38Only Quinn Cannon, my engineer.
09:40When he's through with an assignment, he brings the blueprints here, and I place them in that safe there.
09:47Here you are, Mr. Greer.
09:48Thank you, Miss Parker.
09:50Oh, get me the file on the southeastern plant, too.
09:5999.
09:59Now, take a look through those binoculars.
10:02Now, am I crazy, or is that the chief?
10:06Max!
10:06Not her, 99.
10:08The old man.
10:12Well, it does look like the chief, Max, for a very good reason.
10:14It is the chief.
10:15Don't be ridiculous, 99.
10:17It can't be the chief.
10:18What would the chief be doing in that office across the way?
10:21Because that's Otto Greer Industries.
10:23They do a lot of government contracts.
10:2599, I don't care what industries it is.
10:27Why would the chief be over there?
10:29I'm telling you, that's not the chief.
10:30Max, I'm telling you, I see the chief right in these binoculars.
10:34Will that be all?
10:35Yes, thank you, Miss Parker.
10:37Unless you'd also like to see the moon project data.
10:41Huh.
10:42Is it handy?
10:43It's right in the filing cabinet.
10:45In the top drawer.
10:47That won't be necessary.
10:52Chaos must never get their hands on this file.
10:54Well, you don't have to worry about that.
10:56When I'm through with it, I'll place it in the safe.
10:58Somehow, somebody is getting into this office and getting out with top government secrets.
11:03We've got to find out who.
11:04Well, you know, I'll give you every ounce of cooperation I can.
11:07Yes, we're grateful to you.
11:09Oh, uh, here.
11:11A Greer Industries souvenir pen.
11:14I'll tell you what I'll do.
11:15I'll bet you $5 that's not the chief.
11:18You're on.
11:20Three, four, five.
11:22So that's why I came over here, Ninety Night.
11:25I wanted to save you a trip down to headquarters.
11:26What's my cover on this assignment, chief?
11:28Tomorrow morning, you go to work as Greer's receptionist.
11:31Now, I must know if anybody other than Greer, Quinn Cannon, or Miss Parker has access to Greer's office.
11:36And if not?
11:37Then one of those three is working for chaos.
11:41How could they get the blueprints out of that building, chief?
11:44You said there was a security guard posted at every exit on that floor.
11:48Well, that's what the United States government would like to know.
11:50Just how important to the government are these blueprints, chief?
11:53If chaos gets their hands on any more of those blueprints, Max,
11:55they'll have the capability of polluting the air over every major city in the United States.
12:00Well, I don't want to worry you, chief, but I think they already have that.
12:05I'll report for work in the morning, chief.
12:07If I notice anything suspicious, I'll contact control immediately.
12:12Exactly as I suspected.
12:15Our new receptionist tomorrow will be a controlled spy.
12:18Well, suppose she discovers what we're doing.
12:22Then we'll give the new receptionist a reception she'll never forget.
12:33And I handle everything for Mr. Greer,
12:35both business and personal.
12:39And, uh, you'll get along just fine, Miss Norris,
12:42if you can only remember one thing.
12:44Due to the government work that we're involved in here,
12:46nobody,
12:47but nobody,
12:48gets in Mr. Greer's office.
12:50With the exception of Mr. Greer,
12:52Mr. Quincannon,
12:52and myself.
12:54Is that quite clear?
12:55Oh, it's very clear.
12:56Uh, but supposing you're ill one day,
12:58then who takes care of Mr. Greer?
13:00Miss Norris,
13:01nobody gets in that office.
13:03Miss Parker,
13:04would you come in here, please?
13:05Yes, Mr. Greer.
13:07Nobody.
13:07Spinoza just phoned from the lobby.
13:19He'll be here any second.
13:20Let him in.
13:21Spinoza just phoned from the lobby.
13:51Let me have the file on the southeastern plant.
14:37Where are the blueprints on the southeastern plant?
14:39Well, Mr. Quincannon had a few last-minute changes to make.
14:42They should be ready by about 2 o'clock this afternoon.
14:46Well, there's no sense in your waiting, Spinoza.
14:48You can go,
14:49but make sure you're back here at 2 o'clock.
14:51Let him out.
14:52Thank you, Miss Parker.
15:07Thank you, Miss Parker.
15:07That'll be all.
15:10Miss Norris,
15:11you dropped your pencil.
15:14The great fringe benefit of this assignment is having lunch with you, Max.
15:22Whoops.
15:23Ah, I'll get it for you, 99.
15:27Oh, no, not again.
15:28Well, it's only a paper napkin, 99.
15:31I wish it were only a paper rug.
15:32Anything unusual happen today?
15:35No, everything seemed quite normal.
15:37The only people that went into Greer's office were Greer himself and Miss Parker.
15:40And what about the other guy?
15:42What other guy?
15:43The little short guy.
15:44Well, Max, I sat at my desk every minute.
15:46If anyone else had gone in that office, I would have seen him.
15:4899, I've been watching that window all day through my binoculars,
15:51and I'm telling you that there was a little short guy in there with Greer and Miss Parker.
15:55Well, maybe you were looking in the wrong window.
15:56With Miss Parker in there?
15:57Are you kidding?
15:59Max, if there was someone else in that office, there must be some other way to get in.
16:03Well, they certainly couldn't get in through the window.
16:05Secret door.
16:07Max, that's it!
16:09A secret door!
16:10Well, it won't be a secret for long if they keep yelling about it like that.
16:13But don't you see, Max?
16:15Greer, Quincannon, and Miss Parker are all in on it.
16:18They're smuggling out the blueprints by way of a courier who comes in through a secret entrance.
16:24Max, what's wrong?
16:25That coffee is cold.
16:28Don't you think we'd better get in touch with the chief?
16:30Oh, we can't do that unless we have absolute definite proof.
16:33All right, then I'm going back over there.
16:35I've got to get into Greer's office to search it.
16:37Oh, no.
16:38Absolutely not.
16:38I'm not letting you go back into that office.
16:40It's too dangerous, 99.
16:41But, Max, we have no choice.
16:44But how would you get in?
16:45I'll get Greer out on some pretense.
16:47You can watch from here with the binoculars.
16:49If anything goes wrong, just notify control.
16:52Well, all right, but be careful.
16:53I will, dear.
16:55Here, let me open the door for you.
16:56Oh, no, don't get up.
16:57I don't have to get up.
17:08Miss Parker, I have some business at the Pentagon,
17:10but I'll be back by 2 o'clock.
17:12Yes, Mr. Greer.
17:18Oh, Miss Parker, you know I'm completely out of carbon paper.
17:21Oh, well, I'll get you some.
