00:00On today's Toy Spot, we're going to be starting, oh I'm excited, we're going to be starting my reviews of
00:06the Justice League slash the Justice League Unlimited action figures.
00:12Today we're going to be looking at Superman, the Man of Steel.
00:27And if you ask me, this is probably going to be one of the hardest bunch of reviews that I'm
00:32ever going to be doing, ever.
00:34And I don't know if you even can find Justice League reviews on YouTube, and there's probably a reason for
00:40it.
00:40It's probably one of the most complicated, convoluted toy line ever.
00:46And actually, Superman here, case in point, is a very good example.
00:51I figured before I actually did the reviews of all the other Justice League, I'd start with the initial cast.
00:56This is the initial Justice League release figures that actually included the figure stands.
01:02And I'll actually get into that in a second.
01:03But it's very hard to review something like the Justice League figures, because, especially with Superman here,
01:13Superman has been released both singular and in the three-pack carded figures numerous times.
01:21And while some have been repaints, Mattel, unfortunately, hasn't tried very hard,
01:28and ultimately given us wave after wave of the exact same mold.
01:34It was the exact same mold.
01:37Superman has varied.
01:39But like I said, it's very hard to do reviews of the Justice League sets,
01:43because while I'm sure many collectors out there know who have collected these guys,
01:49while many of those guys might know, many of you might not.
01:53And the problem is, with most Justice League figures, especially with the three-packs,
01:58in the past, we've received usually one, one new character.
02:03And then, with that one new character, they've thrown in a Superman, a Batman, a Wonder Woman,
02:11Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and a Flash.
02:14So, if you've collected Justice League figures like I have,
02:19you probably have about 200 Supermans.
02:23200!
02:25I mean, I'm exaggerating, but you probably have quite a large number.
02:28But I figured I'd try my best to try to do this as informative as I can
02:35for how all over the place this toy line has been.
02:40But, I figured I'd start right at the very beginning, start at the basics,
02:44and hopefully I can remember most of the stuff.
02:47So, what we have is the initial wave Superman, the very first wave Superman.
02:52The very first wave consisted of stands here, figure stands, as you can see.
02:59The Superman, the initial Superman at least, was a five-point articulated figure.
03:07It had the articulated head, which, mine is very stiff on this figure.
03:13It had the articulated arms, and it had the articulated legs.
03:19That's all you got, unfortunately, with this figure.
03:22Later released Superman figures, however, and I'll bring one in just to give you guys an example here.
03:28Here, you'll see that there's slight differences in the paint, for one thing.
03:35And, slight paint differences in the paint.
03:39You'll see that the flesh here is much more flesh-colored than the initial Superman here.
03:45You'll also notice, as well, that they've slightly changed the hand on the original Superman figure.
03:52I guess the idea is they've opened both hands so that, if you wanted to, they could pack it, then,
03:59with accessories.
04:01You'll notice that the original Superman actually didn't have that.
04:05The most notable difference between the original released Superman and what would then be the later released Superman
04:13is the additional four points of articulation.
04:16While this one only relied on the shoulders, the legs, and the head,
04:20the later released Superman, had the additional elbow articulation, as well as knee articulation.
04:29Uh-huh.
04:31While I thought this was going to be an ongoing trend with later released Justice League figures,
04:38ultimately, the additional articulation stopped with the Aquaman.
04:44The Aquaman was actually the last figure, from what I can remember,
04:47to have the additional four points of articulation.
04:50What they ended up going back to, they ended up going back to the five points of articulation.
04:57As well, with the additional four-point articulated Justice League figures,
05:05what they ended up doing, and if you have Justice League sets out now that you pick up,
05:09you'll notice that the additional four-point articulated Superman, for example, is no longer.
05:17What they're now swapping back into the sets are the five-point articulated Supermans.
05:23They probably realized that, for one thing, it was a lot easier to swap in the easier mold
05:31that's got the less articulation.
05:33Plus, as well, consistency-wise, the other Justice League figures that these were packed with
05:41only had the five points of articulation, so they probably thought,
05:45well, we're not going to include the Superman with the additional points of articulation.
05:48We'll leave them out, and we'll just put in the original.
05:53So, everybody's staying with me so far?
05:56One other problem, too, that they had, I think, with the additional articulation,
06:01earlier Wave Supermans, and I'll see if I can try to do reviews of them as well,
06:05earlier Waves had predominant pegs.
06:07You could see more predominant pegs in both the knees and as well as the elbows.
06:11It wasn't as very...
06:13I think this is a later-release Superman, which, as you can see,
06:16the pegs are there, but I believe the original five...
06:21or additional articulated Supermans and Batmans and everything else
06:25tend to have longer pegs.
06:27You could actually make them out a little bit more than on these guys here.
06:34I think I like the five-point articulated figures better.
06:38While I do like these guys, the downside to them is that the joints are extremely obvious.
06:44As you can see on the Superman and everything else, extremely obvious indeed.
06:48The other downside to it is, like I said earlier,
06:51with the figures that had less articulation and then to have these guys with it,
06:56it just didn't really make much sense.
06:58So, I'm almost thinking I'd like to go back and just have these guys on display
07:04rather than these ones here.
07:05As you can see as well, his legs are more out as well.
07:10This also led to problems with the legs being warped.
07:14A lot of legs got warped.
07:15And very loose, I might add.
07:17My Flash.
07:19Most of his legs are very loose on these figures
07:21just because of this additional articulation here.
07:25Moving aside, however,
07:27going back to the original release of Superman,
07:30as you can see as well,
07:31he is much paler in complexion here.
07:34Much more paler.
07:37Detailing is pretty nice, pretty standard.
07:40I mean, in fact, when you first picked up these sets,
07:43you probably liked the figures quite a bit,
07:44but you're probably now at the point,
07:46if you've still collected them straight through,
07:49you're probably very tired of looking at a Superman figure
07:51and Batman and so on.
07:56One of the other problems with the Justice League figures,
07:58unfortunately,
07:59is if you collected Batman animated series figures
08:02or Superman animated series figures,
08:04the Justice League figures were actually shorter.
08:07They were quite a bit shorter than the other figures.
08:10Unfortunately, that meant,
08:12scale-wise, they were completely out of scale.
08:15And I would have liked that Mattel had actually
08:19kept them at the same relative height
08:22so that it was consistent with the other figure lines.
08:25There's nothing worse than having Superman here
08:28standing next to an animated Catwoman.
08:31And Catwoman's about the same height as Superman.
08:34Just doesn't make much sense.
08:37Going back, though, to the original Wave,
08:39and you'll see this is why it's so hard
08:41to review the Justice League figures,
08:42the initial Wave Superman came with no accessories.
08:45As you can see,
08:46he wouldn't really be able to hold them anyways.
08:48The one thing he did include, though,
08:52was he came with a stand.
08:54And the good thing about the stand
08:56is if you've bagged these away like I have,
08:58and you're not quite sure
08:59which figure went with which stand,
09:01you'll notice, though,
09:02that there's a Superman emblem.
09:05And that actually carries over
09:07for the entire stand-y setup.
09:09And actually, when I finish reviewing
09:11all of these figures,
09:12I'll put the stand together
09:13and you guys can see all them together.
09:16One other thing that he does come with,
09:18and this actually is consistent
09:19with all the other initial release figures, too,
09:22is that they come with a figure card.
09:26A figure card right there
09:27that shows the cast
09:28of the initial Justice League lineup.
09:31On the back, though,
09:32there is a motion card here of Superman.
09:38I think you can see there.
09:39And the idea is you can actually peg
09:42that stand at the very back,
09:44that card at the very back of the stand.
09:47So far, it says LE.
09:49Anyone want to guess where this is going?
09:51But you take your Superman figure,
09:53you can actually peg it.
09:54He's got two pegs underneath here.
09:56And you can peg him into his stand.
09:59Yes, not very exciting, I suppose.
10:02But it looks a little more impressive
10:03when you have the other figures
10:05in the initial lineup,
10:06and you can actually put them all together.
10:08I will, like I said,
10:09be doing the review of them.
10:10Try my very hardest
10:12to be as informative, like I said,
10:14as I can, but this line is very gray
10:17and very hard to review.
10:19Like I said, very hard to review.
10:21Basic figures, yes.
10:23And while it might not be
10:25everyone's cup of tea,
10:26one drawback to the figures of these lines
10:28is the fact that they've reused
10:30these molds countless times.
10:32So while you may not necessarily
10:33have a Superman figure,
10:35you most likely might have a figure
10:38that's used the exact same mold,
10:39whether it be a Captain Atom.
10:41I think Olmack used the mold as well.
10:43Although, I mean, there's been several of them.
10:46But, yeah, so there you go.
10:49Like I said,
10:50for those actually interested in this,
10:52what I'll do is I'll try to do
10:53a full review,
10:54a full detailed review
10:55on all the figures,
10:57and then as we get to the later sets,
10:59you'll see how things get a little grayer.
11:01But in the meantime,
11:03that was a toy spot.
