Mattel DC Premier Heat Vision Superman Review – Is He the Same Size as Core?!

00:04Here's a look at the brand new Mattel DC Core Heat Vision Superman.
00:18The Mattel Heat Vision Superman, part of the DC Premier DC Core line,
00:22is a 6.5-inch electronic action figure designed for kids ages 4 and up.
00:26It features interactive chain-breaking action, light-up eyes, and over 12 sounds and phrases.
00:31I can see something new for the boy in blue, and it looks like he's also rocking the new 52.
00:35Before, though, we get a closer look at the brand new Mattel Heat Vision Superman.
00:38Maybe we should take the tape measure first and see how tall the figure's going to stand.
00:41Does that sound good for everybody?
00:44Somebody in the back corner is like,
00:45No! No!
00:47Anyways, for everybody else,
00:49please stop your screaming.
00:50We're going to take the tape measure right to the very top of Superman's head.
00:52You're looking at the figure standing, quiet you,
00:55about 6 and 3 quarters of an inch.
00:57That's going to work out to be a figure that's about 16 and a half centimeters tall.
01:01The good news, at least, about this Superman,
01:03is he's about the same size as the previous Core figures that we've already had to look at.
01:07I say about the same size.
01:09He has to, unfortunately, be a little bit bigger.
01:11He has to, unfortunately, also be a little bit taller.
01:13But if you have plans, though, to scale this Superman
01:15with the rest of DC Core until we eventually get a regular-costumed Superman,
01:19this one might stand in rather nicely.
01:21Finally, what's nice about this Kal-El, too,
01:23is not only does he have a gimmick,
01:24but he does also come included with the accessories.
01:27The one that first Butterfingers almost bent,
01:29actually, I think I did bend it just a little bit.
01:32Trying to open up carefully at the beginning of this review,
01:34you may have already noticed, though,
01:35that I inadvertently, inadvertently bent his heat ray vision.
01:40Now, I can see there's a few little stress marks right there.
01:43That's now caused stress on my own part.
01:45But it doesn't look like, though, he's any worse for wear.
01:47This can then clip over front of his face.
01:49They don't really clip the best, though,
01:52without actually triggering anything that's on the front of his belt.
01:54These sort of just suggestively clip onto his face.
01:59I guess if you put enough pressure on them,
02:01do they survive the blizzard test?
02:03They do.
02:04And there's what Superman looks like with his heat ray vision.
02:06Now, there is a lot more going on than just that alone.
02:09I mean, the figure does also have a heat ray effect
02:12that gets activated when you press the belt buckle.
02:15Should we wait to look at that?
02:16No, let's go and do that right now.
02:18So we're going to press the button.
02:21I'm sure I can't be the only one that thinks
02:23that sounds like a 60s Star Trek phaser.
02:25Press the button again.
02:27It doesn't really do the greatest of jobs of lighting up.
02:29You can kind of already see his eyes
02:31just barely peeking their way through.
02:33Let's do that one last time.
02:35To get I feel the better effects,
02:37let's just go ahead and remove the heat ray vision altogether.
02:39We'll put that off to the side.
02:41Squeeze the button again.
02:42And now you can see much easier now the glowing eyes.
02:46He unfortunately now has to lose pupils
02:48and it does actually look like he's part of those
02:50ooze aliens from X-Files.
02:53But other than that though, I mean, it's fun.
02:54The fact that they actually include something like that.
02:56They also include these too.
02:58The figure does also have kryptonite shackles.
03:02For all intents and purposes,
03:03these are supposed to clip together.
03:05One side is a little bit more of a harder plastic.
03:07This side here is a little bit more of a gummier plastic.
03:09And while you're maybe looking at the links,
03:12don't forget to look at the fact that this link is partially broken.
03:14So when you actually hook the two together,
03:17these are supposed to in theory fit around Superman's arms
03:19and he's shackled together by the very chains of krypton.
03:23Krypton! Krypton!
03:25We're going to slide these up his arms.
03:28I did notice though,
03:29when you are actually putting them on his arms,
03:31that there seems to be a certain way.
03:33When you put them on,
03:34like this arm for example,
03:36it feels like it's tights.
03:37So that tells me right away I've got the wrong one on.
03:40This one, on the other hand,
03:42slips on like a smooth slipper for Cinderella.
03:44We're going to do the same thing then on this side.
03:46And you can, yeah,
03:47you can see already kind of how this thing's going to work.
03:50Take down your shackles and put them kind of together.
03:52Just sort of loop them through the links.
03:55Just like that.
03:57Careful now, careful now.
03:58Let's not trigger anything else in the process.
04:00Link them sort of like this.
04:01And Superman is supposed to lift his arms up
04:04and break the shackles.
04:08I don't find it's always successful
04:10when you actually have his arms straight like this.
04:12Just to show you though,
04:13you squeeze his legs
04:15and they don't always,
04:18they don't always break.
04:19I mean, he makes more sounds than anything else.
04:21I find actually,
04:22if you take his elbows,
04:24bend them just a little bit.
04:26Hold on a second.
04:26Let's stay out of the way of his heat ray vision.
04:28If you bend his elbows just a little bit
04:30and you drink,
04:31bring his arms out.
04:33So I'm kind of just kind of
04:34bring them out on the,
04:35on the angles there.
04:37Then we'll just hook the chain links again.
04:40There we go.

04:42I hope we have it this time.
04:44This is certainly eating a lot more
04:45of the time of the review than I was hoping.

04:57With the arms now bent,
04:58if you squeeze the legs again.
05:01Okay.
05:02It's for all intents and purposes,
05:04what it's really supposed to do
05:05is supposed to break the arms,
05:07break the shackles like this.
05:08And Superman is supposed to lift his arms,
05:10escaping to freedom.
05:12Not always though successful.
05:14All this time of trying to do this though,
05:16I'm sure you probably have already heard
05:17the several sound effects.
05:18He actually has a totaling of 12.
05:20The sound effects vary from bouncing bullets,
05:24deflecting things,
05:25punching bad guys,
05:26and various other things.
05:27He actually doesn't have.
05:29any sound effects whatsoever.
05:30In the sense of like,
05:32he doesn't have any audio clips.
05:33Some work okay.
05:35Like that sounded like
05:35he broke through a brick wall.
05:37This sounds like he's breaking through
05:39a big sheet of paper.
05:42And I guess that's him walking through flames.
05:44But again,
05:45you get a totaling of 12 of these.
05:47We'll go ahead and just take
05:48the shackles off right now.
05:50The one last thing though,
05:51that Superman does also have,
05:52and that's going to happen a lot.
05:54He does have a flight sound effect feature,
05:57which is actually funny.
05:58Online,
05:59they say in order to activate the flight mode,
06:01you have to hold the belt buckle
06:02until eventually skips into a flight mode.
06:05That doesn't,
06:06that doesn't work at all.
06:06If I was just to hold the belt buckle,
06:10it's not going to do any more
06:11than it's doing right now.
06:12In fact,
06:13it actually turns off.
06:14What you have to do though,
06:15instead,
06:16is you squeeze the legs
06:17and the squeeze the legs
06:18do first lift up Superman's arms.
06:20It does give you one of the sound effects
06:22and that's the flight mode.
06:23So as long as you're kind of
06:24holding his legs together,
06:27Superman will then continue
06:28to have a flight mode.
06:30I've done this for about a minute or so.
06:34My guess is two things will either happen.
06:36You'll tire.
06:37People will tell you to shut up
06:39or maybe like the battery
06:40is probably just going to die.
06:42I guess the battery
06:42just eventually gave up.
06:44So by the way,
06:45the battery compartment
06:46is located on the back of the body.
06:47You would have to unscrew these
06:49and replace them up
06:50with button cell batteries.
06:51I think they're LR44s.
06:54Again,
06:54you've got yourself
06:54a little speaker compartment
06:55there on the back of his body.
06:57He's a very heavily influenced
06:59by his gimmick,
07:00but how is the figure actually look?
07:01The figure doesn't look too bad
07:02other than one sad problem
07:04that I had ordering this from Amazon.
07:07See the little top of his hair right here.
07:09I've actually got a bit of,
07:11a couple of scraped pieces of paint.
07:13Pieces of paint
07:14scraped off from the front
07:15of Superman's hair.
07:16It's a shame really
07:18because if not for that,
07:19the face actually looks pretty good
07:20other than the fact
07:20he's got dead eyes.
07:21The dead eyes clearly though
07:22again have to be there
07:23just because again,
07:24you're going to be pressing
07:24the button there on the back.
07:25But the face looks good.
07:27Kind of looks a little bit
07:27like the 80s Hercules.
07:29Remember Hercules, everybody?
07:31As for certainly his suits,
07:33it looks more so I feel like new 52.
07:36Especially the way
07:36that they've done the cape.
07:38The cape tucks on the sides
07:39and of course he has
07:40the higher collar.
07:41Very much does look like
07:42David Korn Sweat's Superman 2.
07:44It looks overall pretty good.
07:46I mean it has to unfortunately
07:47sacrifice a few things
07:48in order to get the job done
07:49of having a gimmick
07:50and the light up sounds.
07:52For the light up feature
07:53by the way though,
07:54it does seem though
07:55that you can still
07:56turn Superman's head.
07:57Though really not by much.
07:59Even turning it ahead
08:00to the side,
08:00it does light up.
08:02So my guess is it probably
08:03runs straight through
08:04the top of the head.
08:04The light source is probably
08:05maybe down there.
08:07For the rest of Superman's
08:08articulation,
08:08he seems very unfortunately
08:10limited by what you can do
08:11with his arms.
08:12The arms are again
08:12so much tied to
08:13the sound effects.
08:15You can move the arms
08:16up on their own
08:17if you certainly want.
08:18You can also take the arms
08:19and fan them out.
08:22Now one thing I do wish though
08:23was there maybe been
08:24a turn off feature.
08:26Let's just say,
08:27I mean obviously
08:27you can go in there
08:28and just unscrew
08:29the back battery compartment
08:30and just remove
08:30the batteries that way.
08:31But had there maybe been
08:32an on and off switch
08:34where he could turn this off.
08:35So if you just wanted
08:35to play with Superman
08:36without him constantly,
08:38let's just say
08:39you're somebody
08:39who plays with your toys
08:41at midnight
08:41and you don't want to
08:42wake up everybody else
08:43in the house.
08:43Having a turn off feature
08:45certainly would be
08:45the best bet.
08:46Or again,
08:46you could probably
08:47just go in there
08:47and take out the batteries
08:48and not even worry
08:49about it at all.
08:50He does have
08:51elbow articulation.
08:52I did notice though
08:53that this elbow
08:53is a little loose
08:54on one of Superman's arms.
08:56He does also seem like
08:57he has some swiveling
08:58here in his wrists.
09:00You can't split the legs out.
09:02Which is weird
09:03because I was really thinking,
09:04oh, there goes
09:05the sound effect.
09:05I was really thinking though
09:06by with a lot of the gimmick
09:08being tied to his legs,
09:09I didn't think I'd be able
09:10to do what I'm doing right now.
09:12The legs move forward and back
09:14but only just a little bit.
09:15The figure surprisingly
09:16does have double hinges
09:17in his knees
09:18which I feel like
09:19to have so much going on
09:21already with Kal-El,
09:22was it necessary really
09:23then to add double hinges
09:24in his knees?
09:25And yet the figure
09:26does have that.
09:27He does also have,
09:28just in case you're curious,
09:29peg holes on the bottoms
09:30of his feet.
09:32It's certainly one of those
09:33Superman that is sold
09:34specifically as having
09:35something going on with him.
09:37Whether it being
09:37the light-up eyes,
09:38whether it being
09:39the sound effects.
09:40It's supposed to be 12.
09:42I count the constant time
09:43of doing this.
09:44I've counted probably
09:44like five or six sound effects.
09:46Some sound effects
09:47almost even sound like
09:47he's doing karate chops,
09:49punching through paper,
09:50or I guess that's supposed
09:51to be fire.
09:52But for at least right now,
09:54if you're looking to have
09:54yourself Superman
09:55along with the rest
09:55of the Mattel DC Core line
09:57that we've collected so far,
09:58he is unfortunately
09:59a little bit bigger
10:00by like that much.
10:02But if that's not
10:03a problem for you
10:03and you like the idea
10:04that your Superman
10:05can have some sounds,
10:06it's not a bad Superman
10:07picking up so early
10:09into this line.
10:10Apparently nobody
10:10can keep Kal-El a captive.
10:12And apparently nobody
10:12can also prevent me
10:13from ordering this guy
10:14on Amazon.

10:16now in hindsight
10:17probably wasn't
10:18the best advice.
10:19Unfortunately though,
10:20with Mattel deciding
10:20to have the package
10:21completely open,
10:22it means it's very susceptible
10:24for a figure like this
10:25to be banged,
10:26scraped against something,
10:27which I think is ultimately
10:28what ended up happening
10:29with Superman's hair.
10:30The whole front of his hair
10:31is completely chipped away.
10:33Now I could probably
10:33go in there and fix it up
10:34with a marker,
10:35but it shouldn't
10:36really be the case.
10:37It seems also too,
10:38and unless I remember
10:39maybe pulling the
10:40restriction tab
10:41on the back of the figure,
10:42I don't think there was
10:43anything in place
10:44to prevent the belt buckle
10:45from being triggered
10:46accidentally.
10:47I remember though,
10:48when I was putting the box
10:49inside my car
10:50and driving home,
10:51I could swear there was
10:52a couple of times
10:52that the box was
10:53emitting a sound.
10:54And I'm sure it probably
10:55was if anything,
10:56Superman trying to escape
10:57his cardboard prison.
10:59All in all though,
11:00it's a fun looking figure.
11:01I mean,
11:01he's a little bit more expensive
11:02than traditionally
11:03your core class figures.
11:04Cores usually are going
11:05to be sending you back
11:0615 to 20.
11:07This guy on Amazon,
11:08at least for a Canadian,
11:09sells for $29.99.

11:12tacking on the 10,
11:13tacking on of course
11:13the light up feature
11:14of his eyes
11:14and the sound effects.
11:16If there's 12,
11:17I count really only
11:18five or six sound effects,
11:19but that would probably
11:20be why this figure
11:21costs a little bit more
11:22than your traditional
11:23core class figures.
11:24He's not perfect,
11:25but certainly though for kids
11:26that want to be able
11:27to fly around their rooms,
11:29the different living room
11:29and kitchen and stuff
11:30with their Superman,
11:31he has the flight mode,
11:33he has of course
11:33the heat ray vision,
11:34and he has shackles
11:36that don't always break.
11:38So he may even in fact
11:39have to help Superman.
11:40I mean,
11:40after all the shackles
11:41are made of kryptonite,
11:41what do you expect
11:42the guy to do?
11:43What do you expect
11:43this guy to do?
11:44Apparently I've also picked up
11:45a couple of other
11:46Mattel core figures.
11:47If you certainly do want
