00:00In this video, you start with creating this simple straight tube connector in FreeCAD.
00:04Other types of tube connectors will be covered in the following videos of this series.
00:10These two square tubes must be connected to each other.
00:17First, create a new body for this connector.
00:23Select it and press F2 to rename it to Connector.
00:28To change its color, right-click on it and select Appearance.
00:34Click on the Appearance button and select Diffuse Color.
00:42Select or enter a color code and click on OK to apply.
00:48Click on Close twice to exit the Appearance menu.
00:55Make sure the new body is selected, highlighted.
01:00Then click on this side of the tube and go to the Sub Shape Binder tool.
01:10And you see the selected shape will be projected inside the new body.
01:14You can toggle visibility by clicking on the eye icon next to it.
01:20Make sure both tubes are hidden.
01:26Show the origin planes of the new body.
01:29In this example, the origin plane is located exactly between the two tubes.
01:36Hide both tubes again.
01:42Select this origin plane and create a new sketch.
01:48Hide the origin planes.
01:52Now select External Projection
01:55and select the inside contour of the tube.
02:03Right-click to exit the External Projection tool.
02:06Box select the projected lines and toggle Construction Mode.
02:12Now the lines are not construction lines anymore.
02:15The sketch is fully constrained, so you can exit it.
02:19Select the pad feature to extrude the shape.
02:23Choose Symmetric for the mode.
02:27Enter 30 mm for the length.
02:30Click on OK to apply.
02:35Now create another new sketch.
02:38And click on this origin plane to sketch on.
02:44Now select External Projection.
02:47And select the outside contour of the tube.
02:54Right-click to exit the External Projection tool.
02:57Box select the projected lines and toggle Construction Mode to make all lines defined geometry.
03:03The sketch is fully constrained, so you can exit it.
03:09Select the pad feature to extrude the shape.
03:13Choose Symmetric for the mode.
03:15Leave the length at 10 mm and click on OK to apply.
03:19Hide the shapebinder by clicking this eye icon.
03:23And click these eye icons to make both tubes visible.
03:30The connector model has been finished.
03:32This is a pretty simple version of a tube connector.
03:35It is applicable when pipes need to be clamped or glued together.
03:43Now let's change the size of a tube to see what the shapebinder does.
03:47When you enter the sketch of a tube you can change the dimensions.
03:54Click on Close to exit the sketch and apply.
03:58Now you see the connector still has the same size as the bigger tube.
04:04And when you change the dimensions back, you see it's still fitting.
