00:00When you create a loft from a rectangle and circle in FreeCAD, a thickness error may appear.
00:07In this video, you learn how to work around this error and add a controlled thickness to this shape.
00:14Let's first create the shape in the Part Design workbench using the Additive Loft feature.
00:20Start with creating a new sketch.
00:22Select the XY plane to sketch on.
00:27Then select the Centered Rectangle tool.
00:33Click on the origin and drag the mouse.
00:35Enter 40mm for the horizontal side.
00:38Press Tab and also enter 40mm for the vertical side.
00:42Press Enter to apply the dimensions.
00:45Click on Close to exit the sketch.
00:48Now it's time to add a new plane.
00:50First click on the eye icon next to the origin planes to make them visible.
00:56Then select the bottom plane.
00:59And go to Datum Plane.
01:04You can also find it in the toolbar if the button is visible.
01:12Enter 40mm for the Z direction.
01:20Here, you see the new plane is projected above the original bottom plane.
01:25Click on OK to apply.
01:27Select the new plane.
01:29You see it's highlighted in the design tree.
01:33And create a new sketch on it.
01:38Select the Circle from Center tool.
01:43Click on the origin and drag the mouse.
01:45Enter 25mm for the diameter and press Enter to apply.
01:50Click on Close to exit the sketch.
01:53Click on the eye icon next to the datum plane to hide it.
01:59Do the same with the origin planes.
02:03Now click on the sketch with the rectangular shape.
02:06And select the Additive Loft tool.
02:13You see the selected sketch is already here next to the Object button.
02:18Now click on the Add Section button.
02:21And select the sketch with the circle.
02:27Click on OK to apply.
02:32To add a thickness, select a top face and go to the Thickness tool.
02:40Leave all settings and click on OK.
02:43The thickness cannot be made and error appears.
02:48Click on OK to continue.
02:51Even when you change some settings,
02:55it still doesn't preview the thickness.
02:58That means it's still not working.
03:06Click on Cancel to exit the Thickness tool.
03:09To work around this error, expand the Additive Loft.
03:13And double-click on the first sketch to edit it.
03:16Let's add a thickness inside this sketch.
03:20Select the Centered Rectangle tool.
03:23And draw a rectangle on the origin.
03:27Just click to add it without any fixed dimensions.
03:31Go to Construction mode with this button.
03:35And select the Line tool.
03:39Draw a vertical line from this vertex to the bigger rectangle.
03:46Right-click to exit the Line tool.
03:50Select the Dimension tool.
03:53Click on the line and add a length of 2 millimeters,
03:57which will represent the thickness.
04:00Right-click to exit the Dimension tool.
04:04Click on the two perpendicular sides of the rectangle and make them equal.
04:11When you change the thickness, it will be the same all around.
04:19Click on Close to exit the sketch.
04:23Ignore the Loft error.
04:27Just go to the Circular sketch.
04:30Exit Construction mode with this button.
04:36And select the Circle from Center tool.
04:41Draw a circle with a diameter of 21 millimeters.
04:45Now it has the same offset as in the other sketch, which is 2 millimeters.
04:51Click on Close to exit the sketch.
04:54And you see the Loft has a thickness now.
05:03When you want to edit it, you can edit one of the sketches.
05:06Change the thickness to 1 millimeter and exit the sketch.
05:11Now edit the other sketch.
05:13And make sure the offset is also 1 millimeter here.
05:19The object has an overall thickness of 1 millimeter now.
05:23So this is how you can add a more controlled thickness to a lofted shape.
