00:00In this video, you learn how to create internal and external threads in FreeCAD.
00:08You need the Thread Workbench for this.
00:11To install it, go to Tools and then select Add-on Manager.
00:16Search for Thread and select the Thread Workbench.
00:23Then click on Install.
00:30Click on OK and then on Close.
00:37Restart FreeCAD and you see the Thread Workbench is there.
00:43First let's create a shaft in the Part Design Workbench.
00:47Create a new sketch and select a plane to sketch on.
00:57Let's use the Polyline tool to draw the section of the shaft.
01:12End on the first vertex to close the loop.
01:16Now select the Dimension tool to add all dimensions to the shaft.
01:21The first dimension is 3mm, which will be used for the M6 internal thread later.
01:28Then enter the other dimensions by clicking the vertex or the line.
01:34The same goes for the external thread, which will be M16, so a radius of 8mm will be entered here.
01:43Click on Close to exit the sketch.
01:45Now use the Revolve tool to rotate the sketch around an axis.
01:49Select the horizontal axis for the correct shape and click on OK to apply the revolution.
01:54So, the shaft has been created now.
01:58Now, go to the Thread Workbench.
02:00It only has a few tools.
02:01You can drag the menu to another position if you want.
02:05Now click on a cylindrical surface and select Metric Thread by clicking the M button.
02:14Expand the menu if you want.
02:18You see it automatically matches the radius of a cylinder.
02:21Check this box for a live preview.
02:26Here you can select on which edge the thread has to start.
02:31Select No Runout for a cleaner thread.
02:36And check this box to add thread to the whole surface, instead of a specific length.
02:42Finally, click on the Create Thread button and you see the external thread has been added.
02:49To create an internal thread, select the inside surface of a hole.
02:54It will automatically match the correct radius.
02:58Enable a live preview and make sure you select Internal here.
03:03Click on the Create Thread button and you see the internal thread is there.
03:10Now both threads have been added.
03:20Click on Close to exit the menu.
03:23So, this was a quick overview on how to add internal and external threads in FreeCAD without using the whole
03:29tool.
