00:00After a week of much more typical weather for the UK, temperatures are set to rise through this weekend and
00:06into the start of next week.
00:08Heat wave conditions are likely, though we're not expecting the extraordinarily high temperatures we saw through June.
00:14What's going on? Well, the jet stream has been pretty active throughout this week, driving areas of low pressure towards
00:20the UK,
00:21particularly across more north and western areas, and it remains active through the rest of this week,
00:26driving further areas of low pressure up towards the north and west.
00:29But through the weekend, it becomes less of a feature and drives those areas of low pressure further to the
00:35north as it's a more amplified jet stream.
00:37And meanwhile, high pressure starts to build in from the south.
00:41It's the Azores High, and it's set to dominate our weather at least through much of next week, bringing plenty
00:47of dry and settled and sunny weather.
00:50So very little in the way of rain in this forecast for the next 10 days or so, particularly across
00:56southern areas, and temperatures will start to rise.
00:59Now, we're not expecting the temperatures to rise as high as we saw through late June because the position of
01:04the high pressure is set to be slightly towards the west of the UK.
01:08Some more westerly driven wind will continue to feed into our weather, which will just bring slight changes, increased cloud
01:17from the north and west.
01:18It will just stop the temperatures reaching the absolute peaks we saw through last week.
01:24But through Thursday morning, we're expecting a weather front to clear the south and east of the UK.
01:29So a bit of a cloudier start to the day across many southern and eastern areas, but it should brighten
01:33up into the afternoon and feel quite warm, actually.
01:36Temperatures already climbing towards the mid-twenties, 25, 24 degrees for many southern and eastern areas, the low-twenties across
01:43much of northeastern England.
01:45We've got this northwesterly wind.
01:47It will feel fresher than that across the far north and west, closer to the mid-teens, but plenty of
01:52sunshine around, a relatively bright and dry day on the whole across the UK.
01:58Clear skies dominate the weather throughout Thursday night into Friday as well.
02:02We've got a ridge of high pressure for many areas, but there is an approaching frontal system to the north
02:07and west once again.
02:08So that will just thicken and cloud across parts of western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps a few
02:13spots of rain here by Friday morning.
02:16Elsewhere, dry start to the day, perhaps a mist and fog around as well.
02:20We see a bit more shelter across more southern areas.
02:23There's still going to be a pretty mild start to the day.
02:26So we've still got high pressure dominating through Friday.
02:28This is the Azores High starting to build in from the south.
02:31We do have an approaching warm front across the north and west, and that's going to be a recurring theme
02:37through the next few days of high pressure dominating to the south
02:40and waving frontal systems approaching into the north, bringing with it some quite persistent rain to western areas of Scotland.
02:47We're not expecting any disruption from the rain, but there are some fairly significant rainfall totals building up throughout the
02:53weekend and the next few days across western areas of Scotland.
02:57So it's not going to feel as warm as elsewhere across the country.
03:00Temperatures in the south, though, climbing towards the higher 20s, 27 degrees in central areas of London.
03:06On Friday, 25 degrees across eastern areas of England, as well as central areas, and again in the low 20s
03:14for many northern areas of England, as well as more sheltered areas of Northern Ireland.
03:18So we're already starting to warm up through Friday.
03:21As we head towards the weekend, the theme continues in the same vein, with weather fronts still pushing up to
03:27the north and west.
03:29Another weather front moves in Friday into Saturday.
03:32High pressures still dominating all the while across the south.
03:36We start to see a cold front moving in, and that will bring a bit of a fresher night Saturday
03:40night into Sunday morning, as it's pretty mild at the moment overnight.
03:45Before that cold front moves down, though, temperatures climbing towards 28 degrees in the south and east.
03:52And then we see temperatures in the north and west once again in the mid-teens.
03:57So pretty similar theme Friday and Saturday.
04:00But then that cold front sinks southwards Saturday night into Sunday, introducing somewhat fresher air.
04:06So a bit of a fresher start to the day on Sunday.
04:09High pressure still dominating, though, to bring plenty of dry weather.
04:13The next waving weather front pushes up to the north and west throughout Sunday.
04:18So another cloudy and damp day for parts of northern and western Scotland.
04:22Some rain pushing into parts of northern Ireland, too, as well as cloudier skies arriving down into northern England.
04:29But as those weather fronts approach that area of high pressure, the sinking air of the high pressure will wash
04:35out any of that rainfall, so to speak.
04:38And so it's going to be a pretty dry day on Sunday across the south and east.
04:43Much of England and Wales seeing temperatures in the mid to high 20s.
04:46So after it warms up through this weekend, with temperatures in the high 20s expected across southern and eastern areas
04:53of England by Sunday,
04:55high pressure is set to dominate our weather into the start of next week.
04:59Situated to the south of the UK is the Azores High, an extension from the Azores that will dominate our
05:06weather.
05:07We'll see westerly winds throughout much of next week wrapping around the area of high pressure.
05:13So it is going to warm up day on day with high pressure staying in place.
05:17But with those westerly winds, temperatures are not expected to breach the peaks that we saw through the June heatwave.
05:24And it's also not quite as hot across western areas of Europe as that heatwave has pushed off into more
05:30eastern areas of Europe.
05:32So although we are expecting heatwave conditions to develop across the UK by early next week, particularly across the south,
05:38we are not expecting the exceptional temperatures that we saw through late June.
05:43So throughout the whole of next week, we will see high pressure dominating.
05:47And you can see from this graphic, this is higher than usual pressure.
05:51It's the pressure anomaly chart.
05:53It's expected to be higher than usual, but centred to the west of the UK.
05:58And that's important because it will drive more of a westerly wind.
06:02And it is a different setup to what we saw throughout June.
06:06But high pressure nonetheless, that does mean a lot of dry weather throughout next week.
06:11How does that change through the week?
06:13Well, not too much, to be honest.
06:15These are the three most likely setups throughout next week.
06:19You can see westerly winds most dominant in all of them.
06:22Perhaps high pressure centred a little bit to the south or slightly further north as well.
06:28So quite how far north that high pressure pushes, well, that's where the uncertainty lies.
06:33But it's likely for southern and central areas to be a pretty dry week.
06:37More northern areas, northern areas of Scotland in particular, could still see some cloudier and cooler weather through much of
06:44next week.
06:45By the 8th of July, it's a very similar setup.
06:48We've got a 32% chance of these westerly winds.
06:51This is high pressure to the south of the UK.
06:54Cooler across more western areas with warmer than average temperatures across the east.
06:59And we could potentially also see that high pressure more dominant across the whole of the UK,
07:04which would bring those higher than average temperatures more widely across the UK.
07:08So it's likely to turn warm through next week, potentially quite hot across the south and east by the middle
07:15part of next week.
07:17Now we could start to see the return of some of those lower pressure systems towards the north and west
07:22of the UK by the end of next week.
07:23You can see in the third most likely scenario here, we see that low pressure up to the northwest of
07:28the UK by the 10th of July.
07:31But we could equally also see that high pressure remaining dominant across the UK.
07:35So high pressure is set to dominate our weather, particularly across more southern areas, for a time to the north
07:42as well.
07:42And that will allow temperatures to climb day on day.
07:46So through this weekend, temperatures are set to be in the high 20s across southern and eastern areas of England
07:51in particular.
07:53Elsewhere in the mid to low 20s, cooler than that across the far north.
07:57But through much of next week, it's going to be mostly dry.
08:00Some rain across the very far north.
08:03But I think most of us are going to see very little in the way of rain.
08:06Very warm away from the far north where we see any cloudier skies with more in the way of rainfall.
08:12And heatwave conditions are likely to develop with temperatures reaching the low 30s across southeastern areas, mid to high 20s
08:21across central and southern areas of England, parts of South Wales as well.
08:26Seeing those higher than average temperatures as well.
08:29So a warm week, not as hot and humid as it was through June.
08:33But heatwave conditions nonetheless for at least some southern and eastern areas of the UK, perhaps a little bit further
08:41afield as well.
08:42If that high pressure does linger on a little bit longer towards next weekend as well.
08:47But of course, we'll be keeping you up to date through the next few days as this heatwave approaches.
