17 August - national forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there, it's certainly turning into a very different week of weather for the UK compared
00:04with last week.
00:05No heat wave, temperatures trending downwards and increasingly wet or at least showery conditions
00:13depending on where you are.
00:14Even the south will see some showers, not at first however, because the evening promises
00:19some very wet weather across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England, but it really weakens
00:24as it goes through the southern half of the UK, no more than a few dribs and drabs, some
00:28light showers turning up by the end of the night across Western England, Wales, frequent
00:32showers to Western Scotland, Northern Ireland, much drier once again towards the south east,
00:38the story of the summer so far.
00:40Nevertheless it is a cloudy night for virtually everyone and another warm or mild night to
00:45come, temperatures widely staying in the teens, one exception Shetland where it will be much
00:50fresher and with some sunshine first thing here, grey skies elsewhere, further showers
00:55coming through again mostly across Western, some central but mostly Western parts of the
01:01UK, more persistent and heavier rain expected for the west and north of Scotland, again avoiding
01:07Shetland for the time being.
01:08Now the cloud breaks and lifts across southern parts of England as well as South Wales and
01:13we will see some sunshine coming through, not as widely as Monday, but given the humidity
01:18at the moment, temperatures are likely to reach 26 to 27 Celsius in some of the warmer spots
01:23of the south, low twenties, high teens further north.
01:28Now the showers in the north don't stay there, we are going to see increasingly some rain or
01:34showers come further south, even in those areas where we have seen a serious lack of rain for
01:38the past few months. A spell of albeit short lived and mostly light rain crosses the southern
01:44half of the UK on Tuesday night into Wednesday and then behind that we've got low pressure sitting
01:50to the north west of the country and that's going to deduce more widely showery weather for the second
01:57half of the week. So that low just off the coast of Western Scotland, some weather fronts swinging
02:02around it but it's going to cause a great deal more instability in the atmosphere across the whole
02:06of the country with high pressure kept well to the west. It's that high pressure that has been so dominant
02:12of course during the summer so far, low pressure now in charge for the second half of the week
02:16and that low pressure sinking its way southwards bringing some heavy and very showery rain into
02:23Northern Ireland, much of Scotland, eventually Northern England and in these locations the chance
02:27of thunder as well as hail. Showers also affecting other parts of the UK even like I say where we've
02:33had a serious lack of rain because they're showers, they're not altogether that useful for relieving
02:38this situation but something is better than nothing I suppose and it's certainly going to feel very
02:43different on Wednesday with temperatures trending downwards and closer to average and in northern
02:49parts of the UK a little below average for the time of year. Another very showery day expected on
02:54Thursday into Friday so yeah there'll be some showers around even in those places where it's been very dry
02:59we'll all notice a cooler feel a less humid feel later this week.
