The K&C Masterpiece dove into some Gridiron Gravy and questioned whether this will be a make-or-break season for several players across the NFL, from George Pickens to Bryce Young and more.

00:00K&C Masterpiece right here on 105.3 The Fan right now, powered by Men's Tea Clinic.
00:05It's time to go around the entire NFL and dip into some gridiron gravy.
00:15So, we've been meaning to do this for a few days, and I thought I would just kind of pare
00:19down the list to the most interesting people.
00:23Do you think this is a make-or-break season for, we'll start, with Bryce Young?
00:30Bryce Young clearly took a step in the right direction last year.
00:34This year feels important in terms of, are the Carolina Panthers ready to go all-in on him as their
00:41franchise quarterback in the new contract that that entails?
00:47Do you feel like it's a make-or-break season for Bryce Young?
00:50And if so, which way do you think it's going to go?
00:52He actually played some games last year that I was like, oh, he helped that team win the game.
01:00The rest of the time, I thought the Panthers played a good brand of football defensively, an offensive line.
01:06They knew they could run the football with Dowdle or Hubbard. It didn't matter.
01:10So, they had that built in.
01:13Now, what do we always discuss, Kevin, when it comes to quarterbacks?
01:17At the end of the day, big-time throws is what makes the difference for your team.
01:22Again, running the ball is good, but at the end of the game, you're probably going to have to make
01:27a big-time throw to win it.
01:29I think this absolutely is a make-or-break season for Bryce Young.
01:35Because you've got to know if what you saw last year was a step in progression, and he has another
01:40place to go.
01:40See, I'm with you on that, because his QBR is still really disappointing, but completion percentage took a nice jump.
01:48So did yardage. So did his touchdown-to-interception ratio.
01:52So, there are other metrics moving in the right direction, but his average per pass is still really low,
01:58something that him and the offense are going to have to work on.
02:01All right, next quarterback, although there are non-quarterbacks here as well, C.J. Stroud.
02:06Now, C.J. Stroud proved a ton his freshman year, or his first year, that he seems to be chasing
02:14it ever since.
02:15And now the Texans, who are obviously ready-made to win, they are even debating whether or not that's the
02:22guy that they hitched their wagon to.
02:26I mean, his percentage went up.
02:30Oh, his completion percentage?
02:32Yeah, it's at 64.5. He was at 63.9, so just slightly.
02:37Right.
02:37But he's been pretty steady in that regard over his career.
02:42It's just that first year.
02:44The rest of the numbers took some dips, though.
02:47And that touchdown-interception ratio isn't going past 23.
02:53The interception numbers aren't, like, dramatically bad, but when you don't have 30-something touchdowns,
02:58that's when people are like, what's going on here?
03:01They have an effective run game.
03:02They have a really good defense.
03:04For sure.
03:04So they're built on this.
03:05I don't think it's a make-or-break season.
03:08I think it's a season where they say, okay, his fifth-year option's still up for him.
03:14Yeah, yeah.
03:14So I think they'll look at the fifth-year option and say, we'll give it one more.
03:18I think next year will be a make-or-break for him.
03:20And they definitely will.
03:21This is just now the time where he could have gotten the extension.
03:24And after his first year, wouldn't you have thought this would be a no-brainer?
03:28After his first year, they're like, they'll extend him the second they can.
03:31Oh, yeah, good point.
03:33Marvin Harrison Jr.
03:35This might sound wild to you, but his reception-to-target percentage never been particularly impressive.
03:44Last year, only 600 yards and four touchdowns.
03:48I know he missed a handful of games as well.
03:50And the argument can, of course, be, who is throwing him the ball?
03:53Well, that's not going to change this year.
03:55Carson Beck.
03:56Yeah.
03:57So that feels pretty underwhelming.
03:59Marvin Harrison feels like he has been a giant disappointment thus far.
04:04I think early in the year last year, we were like, oh, no.
04:07You know, it kind of had a couple moments of, dang it, he might turn into it.
04:12And then the injuries definitely were a problem for him.
04:14I don't think this year is make or break.
04:17Okay.
04:18But you really do want a thousand-yard season out of him.
04:22I just wonder if this year, if it's underwhelming again, people will be like, all right, so you're just a
04:28dude.
04:29That makes sense.
04:31Now, make or break for me is like, he's out of football.
04:34Oh, okay.
04:34See.
04:35Or onto another team.
04:37And I can see what you're saying there.
04:39He still has the physical attributes that make me believe he can be a good receiver, but the numbers just
04:45aren't there yet.
04:46So I've been thinking about make or break in terms of where you're slotted, which is what brings up this
04:52next person.
04:53He should be a one.
04:54He's not.
04:54Yes.
04:55And Marvin Harrison has not even played particularly like a three.
05:00So next one, George Pickens.
05:03Now, again, he's in no danger of falling out of football, but he got traded because he was viewed as
05:10too much of a headache.
05:11Comes to the Cowboys, puts up numbers that I don't think anyone he realistically could have fathomed.
05:17All pro numbers.
05:17Yes.
05:18And the response to the Cowboys were, eh, let's see you do it again.
05:24This feels...
05:25You say the response by the Cowboys?
05:27By the Cowboys.
05:28And other teams, I believe.
05:30Yes, and other teams.
05:31So let's see you do it again.
05:32So I think it's his make or break for George Pickens in terms of getting the type of payday he
05:37wants.
05:38And so if he does it again...
05:39He wants No. 1 money.
05:40Then I think he will get No. 1 money for sure.
05:42If he backslides even, what, 20%, do you think teams will be like, man, he would always be a badass
05:48too?
05:49Are you telling me?
05:50Oh, no.
05:53Somebody goes, wait, you're telling me Don Terry Poe's not a Star Wars character?
05:57That's funny.
05:57Um, you're telling me that the Cowboys looked at what George Pickens did last year and said, that's part of
06:05being in this system.
06:07You're a system receiver.
06:09I mean, maybe, I don't know how much stock they put in, like, eh, stayed out late and stuff.
06:14I think a lot of the league did probably look at it too, and they were like, man, like, that
06:19offense was built to be that.
06:22But can you do it again?
06:24Can you have, like, you've had one year 800, the next year 1100, the next year 900, back to 1400.
06:30And I feel like if he does that again, you can't deny it.
06:35Now, that being said, he could always dip down back to a 900-yard receiver.
06:40And if that's the case.
06:41But I think a lot of people are thinking if he does it again, that he definitely is that guy.
06:45But on the flip side, if he does what you just said, 900 yards, maybe even 1,000, and five
06:50touchdowns, don't you think people are going to be like, yeah.
06:53So you're a heck of a No. 2 wide receiver.
06:56Yeah, probably so.
06:57And I'm never going to give you the money that you want.
06:58And didn't it feel early in the year that the Cowboys were like, yeah, he's a No. 2 receiver to
07:03CeeDee Lamb.
07:04Right.
07:05And he will be the second option.
07:06We haven't quite figured it out.
07:07And that's where Jerry came in the other day, and he was like, we're expecting it faster.
07:11This year, we're expecting him to be at those numbers a lot quicker, where he looks like a No. 1
07:18opposite CeeDee as a No. 1 as well.
07:20I'm going to have to quick hit this one with three quarterbacks.
07:24Michael Penix, J.J. McCarthy, and Kyler Murray.
07:28Yes, because he's got a dude there with him in Tua.
07:32That's ready to take his job.
07:34Yes, because he's not good and also has a dude in there that's getting ready to take his job in
07:39Kyler Murray.
07:39Who was the last one?
07:40Kyler Murray.
07:41Oh, yes, and Kyler Murray, because you're going to the quarterback whisperer.
07:46If that can't fix you, then the rest of the league's going to go, I can't either.
07:50Yeah, after the team that took you No. 1, I was like, I'm good.
07:52Yeah.
07:53So, that makes sense.
07:54All right.
07:55We didn't know if this one in Baseball Nuggets or Gridiron Gravy, but Travis Kelsey has purchased a minority stake
08:01in the Guardians.
08:02How much did that cost, or do you think it was a wedding gift?
08:05I wonder, did she loan him the money, or did she just say, now the bank account is ours because
08:14I trust you and love you so much?
08:16No, I think it was a gift to say the bank account is not ours.
08:20Right?
08:20Like, here, I'm going to buy you part of this baseball team.
08:22Does he have the money to do that?
08:23I mean, he could, but I know she's got the money.
08:26So, like, she bought that by being like, hey, but separate bank accounts and the prenup.
08:30She's been to games with him.
08:32She's been to the Cincinnati Wildcats.
08:35What are the Bearcats?
08:36She's been to some Cincinnati Bearcats games with him.
08:39She was at the Cleveland Cavs game.
08:42Yeah, Cavs game.
08:43And he was going nuts, and she knows how big of a fan he is.
08:46Right.
08:46And I think she's like, you know what?
08:48What better wedding gift could there be than buying a baseball team?
08:52Van.
08:53Marry somebody who's got it like that.
08:55You know what I'm saying?
08:55Yes, I do.
08:57All right.
08:58Josh.
08:58You have to do a lot of extra stuff, you know?
09:01I mean, for a share of a baseball team, I accept.
09:06All right.
09:06Serious.
09:07Could be hugely problematic.
09:10The Packers running back Josh Jacobs is facing five criminal charges arising from a domestic disturbance over the weekend.
09:19Josh Jacobs, through his attorneys, have said that he vehemently denies these allegations.
09:25He's in the early stages of investigation with important evidence that has not been made public just yet.
09:31And as they probably should, the Packers kind of gave the boilerplate.
09:38Matt LaFleur said, hey, we're going to let the process play out.
09:41But this is something to keep an eye out on, not only from a human perspective, but from a football
09:47shifting perspective as well.
09:49Oh, for sure.
09:50Now, along those lines, Brandon Sorsby, his appeal was denied.
09:56He will not be eligible to play at least, or excuse me, not his appeal was denied.
10:02His case was he lost.
10:06And now they're going to appeal.
10:07Sorry for getting that mixed up right there.
10:09And his odds to go in the supplemental draft have gone way up.
10:13It is now minus 200 that he will go in the supplemental draft.
10:17They are still going to appeal to see if he can get back into college football.
10:22But Texas Tech, who was at one time 11-1 to win the title, is now at 25-1.
10:27I just wonder, even if he is in the supplemental, if somebody will take him.
10:31I definitely think they will.
10:32And I feel like I would, if I'm the league, I would be like, hey guys, to separate ourselves from
10:38this stigma,
10:39let's go ahead and not take the dude that was betting on himself and his teammates.
10:43Let's let him work his way from the USFL.
10:46So, just UFL.
10:49What if, so like if he was there, we'd love to give away our fourth round picks.
10:53You wouldn't?
10:55Nope.
10:56Okay.
10:56I wouldn't.
