The K&C Masterpiece continued their NFL Draft Focus by breaking down Kendall Daniels and Josiah Trotter with special guest Carter Freeman.
Transcript
00:00and right now it's time to continue our nfl draft focus which i've been told i need to start
00:07renaming so don't worry about that kevin okay as a matter of fact let's take our focus now to
00:13uh kendall daniels and josiah trotter we're going to start with kendall daniels to trotter but
00:18before we do let's go ahead and turn our attention to twitch approved uh and also oklahoma sooner
00:25fan like we know no other and college football expert on our show carter freeman carter how's
00:31everything going today man uh it was going great until kevin figured out my scam email i'm gonna
00:36have to find for him can you confirm onion mail just hasn't quite caught on yet yeah we've been
00:45working on it for a while i don't know maybe we should go with what eggplant mail you tell me
00:49kevin
00:49what's gonna work i feel like eggplant mail might pull you into a different kind of scheme like
00:54what a sex one thanks uh thanks carter for setting kevin up for that one immediately all right
01:03my first question to you is uh our mason uh thomas says he wants to run a 4-4 at
01:09the 40 uh do you
01:11think he can accomplish that feat this weekend well he was giving us physics lessons yesterday when
01:16talking about you know questions about his size he just said mass times acceleration equals force right
01:21so the dude with the getoff is he he grew from a you know just a rotational guy early in
01:28his career
01:28at oklahoma to really you know a a player that offensive lines would have to focus on because
01:35he didn't maybe have the huge sack numbers that you thought he would have going into last season but
01:41that's because he was facing a lot more attention so 4-4 is a lot from a defensive end
01:46slash outside linebacker slash however you want to describe him but the dude just grew better and
01:52better and better as a lot of players in brent venable system did over his time at oklahoma
01:57so i'm not going to put anything past him okay uh and this is one of the things alec i
02:02think you're
02:02noticing it too uh carter i don't know if you've kind of caught on to this but a lot of
02:07wilma clay
02:07dane brugler all the guests that have been on clayton adams have been talking about the type of
02:13defensive end edge players that this draft is kind of giving you and it seems like the stock is
02:18full of these guys right now your thoughts yeah i mean uh i've been you know doing as much work
02:26as i
02:26can uh watching a lot of these guys and just a lot of bend i mean there's uh you know
02:31what like
02:31reuben bain some of the other guys at the top of the first round i know or mason thomas's name
02:35was kind of thrown out there early in the process it doesn't seem like he's maybe going to go
02:39high first round like he was originally maybe projected to but yeah i mean these are just kind
02:45of the new defensive ends right this is the way that college football is building them and then
02:49it's just a lot quicker it's a lot fat it's just it's they'll be built differently once they get
02:54into the nfl but they have all the traits you love of a guy that can get you know close
02:59to double
02:59digit sacks once he's in the league yeah yeah it's a it's a fun this has been a lot of
03:03fun kevin to
03:04watch for those 20 that number 20 spot or maybe if you're going to trade down because
03:08guys like cassius hal exist yes and guys like our mason thomas you know he might have short arms
03:14yeah yeah but it seems like this entire draft is full of guys that are built like that that are
03:19elite athletes that can do a lot of different things and that's what the nfl is looking for
03:24right now all right let's turn our attention to kendall daniels who we said it was wolchuk yesterday
03:30he walked in and he's like hey uh this guy's fascinating six five two forty two what do you do
03:36with
03:37him and i went and watched him and i used this explanation to kevin earlier this morning alec
03:42uh i was like he's like the tall basketball guy you put out on a field and you're like he
03:47doesn't
03:48quite know what he's doing but he's going to go out there and athlete it up and uh and this
03:52is i'm
03:52watching a guy and so i went and i was like am i right about this lance zirline used this
03:57underdeveloped instincts delay his flow to the football and that's kind of what exactly what i see
04:02whenever i see this guy but when i when i watched him i was like there's a lot of things
04:06that i'd
04:06loved long rangy kind of guy that has this ability to close real quickly he's going to get there it's
04:13just you're like when's he going to start getting there that being said how did oklahoma use kendall
04:19daniels because right now this nickel star position is really what we're kind of keying in on because
04:24christian parker could use it what kind of guy do you see in kendall daniels carter well he's a guy
04:30that worked really well in brent venable's defense last year because brent venable's always any of his
04:36defenses always have a cavalcade of good linebackers and he was a part of that he only had about i
04:42think
04:4250 tackles on the season in 2023 when he was at oklahoma state he had over 100 he had an
04:48excellent
04:48year he was a one-time big 12 uh defensive freshman of the year i believe is what he was
04:53honored with but
04:54he had nine tackles for loss last year and i just find that number that's close to a career high
05:00if not what he did during his time at oklahoma state but the dude is just a rocket launcher like
05:05watch his michigan tape the or his tape from oklahoma's gaming it's michigan last year and
05:11there is a specific tackle where as soon as the ball is thrown by michigan's quarterback
05:16kendall daniels is already in the backfield tackling the guy who is catching the ball like that is
05:21the kind of place he can make but like you're saying maybe the instincts aren't there that's why he
05:26didn't that's why he was more of a rotational guy within the defense but you put him alongside other
05:31really good players like a kobe mckenzie like an owen heineke another guy who's in this draft who
05:37could be a late round steal if you're a cowboys fan and he had a ton of success and i
05:43think last
05:43year you saw a lot of growth from maybe some of those some of those things we're talking about when
05:47he was previously at oklahoma state i think venables is one of the best linebacker developers in college
05:52football and that's going to really help him you know maybe be a mid-round pick uh come april
05:58alec you're in mid-round is kind of where i have him slotted kevin if he was to fall to
06:02four that'd
06:02be an interesting player uh to have that because we look at i've been trying to get you extra picks
06:06yeah you've been working on that really hard and but the when it comes to like sunny styles he has
06:11this same kind of big frame but he actually looks like he fills it out a little more in my
06:15mind than
06:15kendall daniels does he's got this big body and frame and freaky athleticism with sunny styles
06:21you're like would this be a poor man sunny uh well then obviously the other things that sunny does
06:26so well are the reason that he's at the top of the draft right now alec when you watch kendall
06:30what
06:30you think i i like his ability to move off of blocks and move through traffic some of that it's
06:38like
06:39instincts for him a lot of this stuff and really his whole draft position is going to be based on
06:45traits because like carter just said last year not a ton of numbers but i do think that he has
06:51a lot
06:51of instincts when it comes to tracking down the football and keeping his eyes on the ball that
06:56teams are going to fall in love with click quickly because they're going to say hey if he does fill
07:00out that frame a little bit more then i can turn him into something special you mentioned the
07:05underdeveloped instincts uh in terms of coming downhill i do think when the play is right in front of
07:11him he is excellent uh but i think he's underrated in his ability to shed blocks you were talking about
07:17the tackles for loss in his last four seasons 31 and a half so he is in the backfield a
07:23lot so speed
07:24athleticism all the traits in the world that's why he's a fun mid-round guy where you're like i don't
07:30have to invest it to defense it looks like a little bit but i do i don't mind dropping him
07:35back in
07:35coverage because i think his instincts are good enough he's underrated in zone coverage if you ask me i
07:40thought he was actually pretty solid well and because of his length and range there too i think
07:44in zone like he can he's a good fit because he can be you're like i can get this ball
07:48over him and you
07:49can't uh because of what he can stretch to sure and he can blitz he can spy the quarterback because
07:54of the athleticism so i think there's a lot of things that simply you can teach him to do just
07:59because he has the ability he has all the intangibles he might not have done it a ton in college
08:05but you
08:06could say i could probably teach this guy to do that and that's my favorite kind of thing to look
08:11for in that like third fourth round area is like if they have the traits and they have everything up
08:16top iq wise can i just teach them a couple things that they didn't do before i think you could
08:21teach
08:21them a lot i also think that this week kevin is perfect for a guy like him because people are
08:26just
08:26going to be enamored by his size and his physical specimen that he is you got to get past that
08:32too and
08:33then go like that's why you combine all the things it's one of the things clayton adams was talking
08:37about yesterday was how do you combine you get here and you use this because that's this is what
08:42you do uh clayton adams like i i do this i love to analyze players and develop players so this
08:48is why
08:49i love to come to this some people think it's the underwear olympics that's fine you can think that
08:53he said but this is what i do and so i like seeing this and then comparing the tape to
08:59it because then
08:59you find out well you know what did i actually see on tape that made me like him and what's
09:03not
09:04adding up here and so this is one of those players that people are going to fall in love with
09:08when
09:08they watch him run his 40 and stuff like that they're going to be like this guy looks amazing
09:12uh so he's an interesting player again we're trying to get more picks in the middle rounds of the draft
09:17that's right uh to try and take advantage of something like this maybe he falls to you in the fifth
09:21and this is like the classic dallas cowboys are like look at this six foot five dude that we're throwing
09:26out here linebacker maybe a safety spot we'll see how things go now carter before we get to
09:32josiah trotter because i don't i did talk to you a little bit last night and you were like i
09:36better
09:36go watch some josiah trotter i did i promise okay good good how was hawaii man how's things going oh
09:42yeah oh it was it's hawaii man you can't not have a good time uh when you're on oahu i
09:48mean diamond
09:49head uh you know hanama bay there's just so much uh out there in the middle of nowhere because the
09:55pacific is a terrifying place because it's just so empty except for hawaii and thank god hawaii is
10:00there because it was a really fun time but um no that was great um and then yeah i mean
10:06i've been
10:06then uh at fox 4 writing for a couple was almost two months now uh that it's been so no
10:13things have
10:13been good and uh you know i've just been listening to you guys as much as i can i really
10:17enjoyed it was
10:17i think it was your mike golick interview at the super bowl that i like the most nice is that
10:22because
10:23you miss us you've been listening a lot of course i told both of you you know i told cory
10:29hey let me
10:30know when y'all are on remote and i'll come by and say hi and he's like yeah man sure
10:33i told that to
10:34kevin i don't think kevin said anything yeah i can understand that it felt like the end of our
10:38conversation uh i will i will point out carter you left us in good hands aiden has done some amazing
10:46work uh in your absence and uh we really appreciate what he's on he did fail to send me the
10:51uh link this
10:52morning dear it wasn't in my email but that's a different story for a different time uh aiden we
10:57don't have time for this right now we are very busy very he said tell the people the truth he
11:03sent
11:03it it's in his outbox but not in my deleted or anything so i can back aiden up on this
11:09i saw when
11:09it got sent but for but for whatever reason it came into my email you guys are monsters at 10
11:1731 a.m
11:18but i saw when he sent it so i don't know freaking hotmail screwed us over yeah maybe it is
11:25maybe
11:25was i will i know people are gonna be like that's what you get for still having hotmail
11:29that's right i hear you when are you gonna move over to onion mail uh that's a big question that
11:34that being said never aiden has told me it's because of uh carter's uh discipline training that
11:39he's uh at the point that he is today so that's nice thanks a lot carter for making a good
11:44one
11:44all right um josiah trotter six foot two 237 linebacker sophomore out of missouri is that where
11:51we're looking here oh he should have got mickey on the horn too yeah um i'll i'll let you start
11:58carter what you saw out of this guy obviously the cowboys are looking for some linebackers how do you
12:03feel like this guy would fit you know he's interesting because he's so young right you know
12:08you've mentioned he's a sophomore and he really has two years of you know significant playing time
12:14it was he was a freshman you know defensive all-american when he was at west virginia
12:20in 2024 transfers to missouri gets some sec experience then immediately says hey i'm going
12:26to the nfl i think the thing he has over his brother who was in last year's draft or a
12:32recent nfl draft
12:32jeremiah trotter jr was that he's got two inches on him so he's a little bigger he's got the
12:38size that i think more not quite the kindle daniel size he's got the size that nfl uh defensive
12:44coordinators are going to like but the lack of playing time i mean there's you know or lack of
12:49overall experience i think there's some question there but his dad was a long time player and he
12:55had success as an undersized linebacker his brother's having that with the eagles and so i think
13:01it's just going to be one of those things where you you're just going to say well it runs in
13:04the
13:04family and there are really good things on tape but i have a little questions about how
13:08quickly he can acclimate since he doesn't have that kind of playing time in college
13:13i'd agree and i think i would be okay with him doing pretty much everything outside of dropping
13:19back in coverage i don't think he's going to cover many things very well but again something he could
13:25be taught because uh cory our favorite term oily hips oily he can spin around and he can change
13:30direction very quickly uh but whenever i watch him attack blocks is when i get excited about him
13:36because he is physical like i he's almost got like a ufc style of striking when he's going against
13:44blockers or offensive linemen like he is he's not just going to get past you he's probably going to
13:49hurt you in the process like it's going to sting for a second after he makes one of those punch
13:53moves
13:53to get around you like this guy is physical he times up his blitz as well uh he can stop
13:59the run
14:00i think he's got a lot to offer here and i do agree that he is more of a prototypical
14:05linebacker
14:06and i think he would fit most systems pretty well uh kevin i love what alex saying there's a couple
14:11of
14:11different times where you see runs going to the outside instead of trying to get around the tackle
14:15he's like screw it i'm going to just push you back into the play and he has the physical hands
14:21to be in
14:21strength up top to just bull rush somebody back into the play while running uh sideways and i kind of
14:27like that and so i love that there isn't a gang tackle this dude hasn't been part of every single
14:32gang tackle on the field he's like i gotta get my hands in there somewhere he fills gaps so fast
14:37it's a lot of brain work he understands the run games he understands fits he understands where he's
14:41supposed to be and he attacks them well this is the guy kevin it wasn't kendall daniels this is the
14:46guy i was asking you to try and get me a third round pick for and i he gave suggestions
14:51might be a
14:52low second somewhere in the third if he slips to the fourth you absolutely snatch him up
14:57carter thank you so much can i ask carter one more question well we're running out of time
15:01here kevin i mean this is a very hard how sad are you that oregon and oregon state aren't going
15:06to
15:06play again for a couple years well i mean it's uh it's it's unfortunately the the way it's going
15:13in modern college football i mean we don't have bedlam anymore we don't have civil war anymore
15:18we don't have i guess we're we're less chaotic right you know we're losing bedlam and civil war so
15:23things should be like technically a little calmer right i think we still have the apple
15:27and the washington state are still playing but how about the fact that hawaii utep and north dakota
15:34state are now and illinois northern illinois are all in the same conference that is insane to me
15:41you weren't thinking that utep hawaii rivalry for proximity's sake was about to take off huh
15:47well north dakota state is going to hawaii this year which just i don't know i feel like that
15:53speaks for itself great stuff carter thanks so much we miss you we love you but thanks for aiden
15:59you're welcome for aiden i know he's doing great and if you want to reach me that's carter.freeman
16:04at onionmail.com i don't think that is accurate i do not believe that is good stuff that is factually
16:12accurate but to be fair not 100 on that
