The K&C Masterpiece dipped into some Gridiron Gravy and discussed recent NFL moves. They broke down wide receiver signings, surprising contract guarantees, and what these moves could mean for George Pickens and the Cowboys. They also touched on cornerback and edge rusher deals, team strategies, cap considerations, and situations shaping rosters around the league.
Transcript
00:00We broke the Jalen Phillips and the Pittman news.
00:04I gave you the rundown right at the beginning of the segment.
00:06You got to tolo, everybody, because something's always happening.
00:09And right now, Kevin, commanders are signing veteran cornerback Amick Robertson
00:13to a two-year, $16 million deal with $9.3 million guaranteed.
00:18That's where the cornerback market is right now.
00:21The safety market could be right in that a little bit less than that.
00:25And so we're kind of keeping an eye.
00:27I think that's what I'm keeping an eye on the most, Alec,
00:29is your safety market, your edge, where Trey Hendrickson is,
00:34and what the Cowboys are going to do at linebacker.
00:36So a lot of negotiations happening in the legal tampering period.
00:40Hopefully the Cowboys have a very significant plan,
00:43because we were told they were coming up with a detailed plan for this offseason
00:47and to correct their defense.
00:48But right now it's time to go around the entire NFL
00:50and dip into some gridiron gravy.
00:56Dip it.
00:58Don't skip it.
00:59You know, I said that the Stars attorney had the best line of the weekend.
01:07Perhaps I spoke too soon.
01:10Did you see Geno Smith's social media game over the weekend?
01:14I did not.
01:15Because it is effing elite.
01:17So Geno Smith, get word, he's going to be let go.
01:22And so Wendy's put out a tweet and said,
01:25At Geno Smith 3, in case things don't work out in free agency,
01:28we're looking for a chief tasting officer.
01:30To which Geno Smith posted an article from a month ago that said,
01:38Wendy's sales plunged last quarter, and it said,
01:42Get your cheese up first.
01:47Which is tremendous.
01:49So he fires back, huh?
01:50Yes.
01:51Yes, he did.
01:52I kind of like that.
01:54I kind of like the idea of him just kind of looking around at all of these potential job openings
01:59and being like, hey, I'll take on all of these jobs because I'm the best at all of them.
02:04Yeah.
02:06But he was like, they don't make enough money for me.
02:08They don't have enough right now.
02:09It was amazing.
02:11Or was he suggesting more cheese on the burgers?
02:14Man, I feel like it was a takedown of the business because that subhead was doing a lot of work.
02:19Talked about how sales fell 11.3% and were the worst Wendy's results in 20 years.
02:24Gotcha.
02:24And so I appreciate Geno Smith firing back right there.
02:29All right.
02:30Let's go from that to, you know, when we talked about all these deals,
02:34we didn't get a chance to talk about the Trey McDuffie extension too, too much.
02:40Four years, $124 million.
02:42So that's $31 million per year.
02:46I did want to add that it looks like the Bears are adding a safety, Kevin.
02:51Safety and Super Bowl champion Kobe Bryant.
02:54Oh, nice.
02:56To their team.
02:57We discussed him a little bit last week.
02:59Yes, we did.
02:59As well.
03:00So that move is being made.
03:01They also added Neville Gallimore, two for 12,
03:05although I feel like that probably doesn't move the needle quite as much.
03:08I did not know he was in the league still.
03:10Oh, okay.
03:11My brain just was like, he's done.
03:13Okay.
03:14So obviously we want the best,
03:16but I wanted to run down a couple of worst case scenarios for you.
03:21All right.
03:21In terms of, is this the worst free agent signing of all time?
03:25Now, I realize, what's that?
03:27Malik Willis.
03:28No, not Malik Willis.
03:30Time will tell on that.
03:31Okay.
03:31But I wanted to focus in on things that have already happened.
03:36And I know a lot of people are going to say Cowboys, but guess what?
03:39Good news.
03:39They're not anywhere near the top of this list.
03:42Number two on the list, and this just happened.
03:45Christian Wilkins.
03:46He got a four-year, $110 million deal with $82.7 million guaranteed.
03:56I believe at the time that might have been the highest guarantee for a non-quarterback.
04:02And, well, five weeks into 2024, he had a season-ending injury,
04:08and then he refused to go for a second foot injury,
04:11which voided the guarantees in his contract.
04:14So, that feels like one of the worst ever.
04:18Both of them lost.
04:18I mean, yes.
04:20And the Raiders gave Wilkins $83 million for five games.
04:24Wow.
04:25And I know you might be thinking, how can it be worse than that?
04:28By the way, Kobe Bryant, three years, $40 million a year.
04:31I'm not, $40 million.
04:33I understand.
04:34Total.
04:35That number right there, that's a number, Kevin.
04:39Hopefully, we can get in under that one.
04:41Is that number too high for you?
04:42I'm wanting $11, $10, you know, I'm wanting that for,
04:45but we'll see where Jalen Thompson's number is.
04:47Yeah, that deal was terrible for both sides.
04:50Well, what if I told you it was eclipsed only by Albert Hainsworth?
04:55This was, my recollection of this was it was absolute toilet swirling all the way down.
05:04So, from the moment they were like, hey, will you go do some conditioning test for us?
05:10And he was like, let's watch this, see how it goes.
05:12So, he signed with Washington.
05:15It was seven years, $100 million.
05:20I believe that first year he was there, he played 12 games with them.
05:26But then the next year, he got suspended for, as you just were kind of hinting at,
05:32refusing to cooperate with Mike Shanahan and the head coaching staff.
05:37And then they traded him the next year for a fifth-round pick.
05:42In the two years he was there, Washington won 10 games.
05:46Nice.
05:46Congratulations to them.
05:48But I do have good news for you.
05:49You know how many Cowboys players were on this top 50 biggest free agent bus list?
05:53None.
05:54Now, could you argue that it's because the Cowboys eventually got scared of participating in free agency?
06:01Maybe.
06:01Yeah.
06:02But, you know.
06:04And, I mean, the Albert Hainsworth thing is kind of why.
06:07Because you go out there and you go sign a dude for a significant amount of money, injury, whatever it
06:14is,
06:14and you were relying on that player.
06:16You were.
06:17Now, should that scare you in this business, look at it as like the restaurant business.
06:22You're going to break glasses and plates.
06:24You're going to have to replace them.
06:25That's just part of doing business in the restaurant business.
06:28That's part of your overhead.
06:30Sometimes injured players are going to happen whenever you pay for them.
06:34That's overhead.
06:34You've got to figure out the proper balance when you sign these guys.
06:38The talent level, are they on their way up?
06:41Are they, like, you can't predict if a guy who's 27 years old is going to get hurt or not.
06:47Right.
06:48You just kind of have to hope that you planned the best for it and made some room for it
06:51as well.
06:51Yeah.
06:52No, you're right about that.
06:53I found this to be pretty interesting.
06:57Who do you think Steelers fans want as their quarterback?
07:01Like, while we're in the midst of all the free agent things, what do you think the Steelers fans want?
07:05Fernando Mendoza.
07:07I think this is of people, you know what, actually, maybe.
07:11Probably Aaron Rodgers.
07:12Aaron Rodgers is third at 17%.
07:15Second, Mack Jones at 24%.
07:20That makes a lot of sense, actually.
07:21And first, Will Howard at 33%.
07:24That means two times as many Steelers fans want Will Howard to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers as
07:30Aaron Rodgers.
07:31That is, that's very interesting.
07:37The, I, they, they feel like when they watched him in college, he had a level of toughness that just
07:42fits them, right?
07:43Yeah.
07:44Like, I think that's one of the reasons, plus, they're familiar.
07:47Mack Jones is interesting, too, because he, did he get the turnaround after working with the Niners?
07:54Did he, you know, did that change his life?
07:56It feels like it, right?
07:56Can we be the next team to take advantage of what Shanahan couldn't keep?
08:00Yeah, somebody asked, hold on, why wasn't Deshaun Watson the No. 1 worst free agency signing?
08:06Good question.
08:07That's because he's still in the mix.
08:10So I take you to the Browns fans.
08:12Who do you want as their starting quarterback?
08:14And, Alec, in your face, 68% of Browns fans want Dylan Gabriel.
08:20What?
08:21I'm just kidding.
08:21It's 14%.
08:23He is last on the list of candidates, followed by Kyler Murray, who's not even on that team.
08:30He's ahead at 18%.
08:33Deshaun Watson, 22%.
08:35And then Shador Sanders is at 26%.
08:38So, yes, Alec, not only do they not want Dylan Gabriel, given all of the other options that are available
08:46right in front of them,
08:48they most certainly put Dylan Gabriel last on the list.
08:52Oh, you love to hear it.
08:53I'd take Steve DeBerg off the couch before I'd take him.
08:56Wow.
08:57Yeah.
08:57By the way, speaking of Kyler Murray, do you know Kyler Murray will continue a fairly disturbing trend of No.
09:041 picks who do not make it or stick with the team they were drafted by until they're 30?
09:10This continues a run.
09:11I think you have to go all the way back to Matthew Stafford as the last quarterback who was drafted
09:15overall No. 1 and was still with his team by the age of 30.
09:20Yeah, my brain, like I was kind of, Drew Brees was around that time, but maybe a little before.
09:25And he was not a No. 1 pick.
09:26Yeah, but he went to, oh, that's right, yeah.
09:29Wow.
09:30So No. 1 overall picks are just awful, huh?
09:32I mean, that's got to make you a little nervous.
09:35Joe Burrow's still with this team, right?
09:36That's true.
09:37And he should, hopefully, be able to break.
09:41He's going to break the streak?
09:42I do, because he's got to be like 28, 29.
09:47So I think he will break the trend, or maybe he's busy dating Jessica Alba.
09:52I don't know what those rumors are.
09:54But also, that's got to make you nervous if you're the Raiders, right?
09:58Yeah, I don't know if that's true, but there's, supposedly there's a photo of them together,
10:02and any time two attractive people are together, they're like, they must be dating.
10:06Why not?
10:07I mean, I guess.
10:09I didn't know.
10:09Is she married?
10:10I don't think.
10:11I think she got a divorce.
10:13Really?
10:13She has kids, but I think she got a divorce.
10:17What's she up to?
10:17I don't know.
10:18Maybe dating Joe Burrow.
10:20You're saying we have a shot.
10:21I...
10:22What?
10:22All the guys out there.
10:23You're married.
10:25Would you throw your marriage away for Jessica Alba?
10:27She's worth like a billion dollars.
10:29That's a lot of money.
10:30I know.
10:30Do I have to get a prenup?
10:32I do not know what that's in reference to.
10:35I'm just trying to figure out, if I don't, how much I can walk away with after a few years.
10:41Mm-hmm.
10:42Now, this is a name...
10:44The answer's no, Kevin.
10:45Okay.
10:46I love my wife.
10:48Alec, if you could never see your dad again, but you marry Jessica Alba with no prenup, is
10:57that a deal?
10:59Every day and twice on Sunday, yeah.
11:01Wow!
11:02Because he knows I would send him any of my claimings thereafter, and he would go live
11:08on some remote Hawaiian island or something.
11:10Okay.
11:11Yeah.
11:11A billion dollars is a lot.
11:13It is.
11:13It really is.
11:14She can make more?
11:15She can.
11:16Odafe Owe is a name that I wanted to...
11:20Okay, tell me.
11:21What do you got?
11:21The Falcons are signing Nick Folk to a two-year deal, Kevin.
11:25I know you wanted more Nick Folk news, so I just wanted you to...
11:27What do you know?
11:28What are they?
11:29Really?
11:29He's 41 years old.
11:31Jeez.
11:32That's got to be a front-loaded deal, right?
11:34The fact that he won a game for Tony Romo and Buffalo a long time ago, and it's still
11:40kicking, is fascinating to me.
11:43Okay.
11:43Back to you, Kevin.
11:44So, people are worried that Fernando Mendoza might be screwed.
11:48We'll see if Joe Burrow is as well, or if Trevor Lawrence will reach that.
11:54We've got some opportunities.
11:56But I wanted to bring up Owe is because people are looking for potentially cheaper alternatives.
12:03Yeah, for sure.
12:03This is a name that we brought up a while ago, assuming that Jalen Phillips, at $30 million
12:09per year, jacks up the rate for Trey Hendrickson, and then you go in a different direction.
12:14What would you think of Owe as another pass rusher?
12:18This is a dude.
12:19He had 10 sacks in Baltimore last year, in 2024.
12:24And then this year, he wasn't very good with Baltimore to start the season.
12:28But then he was good with the Chargers.
12:31He had zero sacks with Baltimore to start the season, and then finished the year with
12:35seven and a half.
12:36He's the kind of guy that I think kind of fits that mold on the edge with Rashawn Gary, that
12:42he can do a little bit of both.
12:44He's got a little more pass rush to him, but I would like to add a piece like that to
12:50this
12:50team for sure.
12:51Obviously, the price is going to be the biggest factor here, but I think you, Kevin, gave
12:56me a number that whenever we were going through this that I felt very comfortable with, and
13:01I don't feel like that number's changed that much since then.
13:04And look, here's the thing about some of these contracts that you're going to see today.
13:07If you get really aggressive with the way you structure it, you can get a first-year cap
13:12hit that is maybe about 55% of that number.
13:17So it depends on number of years and things like that, but if Trey Hendrickson signed a
13:25three-year $100 million deal with the Cowboys, you might be like, oh my goodness, that's
13:31so much money, 33 and a third, give or take.
13:34I could probably get you that cap hit to about $18 million for this year.
13:39And that's the way I want you to think about it when you see some of these deals.
13:42Because if I told you Trey Hendrickson one year, $18 million, wouldn't you be like,
13:46well, hell yeah, let's go do that.
13:48And so it's the guaranteed money, it's the number of years, and that allows me to kind
13:53of work around with that number.
13:55And that's one of the reasons we made it to today, and I hate that George Pickens is still
13:59sitting there theoretically on the franchise tag, because if you would have gotten the long-term
14:03deal done with him, you could have automatically opened up another $10 to $11 million.
14:08And that's my biggest disappointment for the day, that you didn't have as much possible
14:12money at your fingertips that you could have.
14:16You are only working with the cap.
14:18Correct.
14:19You are not working with the extra revenue that the Cowboys make.
14:23That is true, because I don't get to fiddle with that, but you're right.
14:27And I know that none of us care about that.
14:29True.
14:30I'm just going to lay this scenario out, though, for you.
14:33Kevin, over the next month and a half after the draft, is a dead period.
14:40Right.
14:41Unless the Cowboys have a contract situation.
14:44And then content is available for everybody.
14:47So that's what I see happening, and again, that keeps the Cowboys forefront, that keeps
14:52the revenue coming in.
14:53So yes, you're right.
14:55It's very valuable to us with the cap.
14:58Yeah.
14:59But it's more valuable to be a story.
15:03Look, while also, again, building your defense at the same time.
15:07If you can do both, Kevin, if you can do both right now, build the defense without having
15:11signed George Pickens, then the Cowboys are like, then why not do that?
15:16Yeah, no, you're right.
15:17I just...
15:18I'm not trying to say I'm right or that it is right.
15:20That's what I feel is happening.
15:22I would go back...
15:22I'm going to be seen in time again with them.
15:24You're right.
15:24And I would go back to them every time, and I'd be like, can you imagine if your team
15:28won?
15:29Mm-hmm.
15:29Like, what a happening.
15:31Nothing in the NFL would exist.
15:33I feel bad if the Cowboys ever make it to the Super Bowl, what team they're playing
15:37against.
15:38Because nobody's going to care.
15:40They're only going to tie...
15:41Oh, my goodness gracious.
15:42Especially if Jerry is still alive.
15:44Oh, my goodness gracious.
15:45This is amazing.
15:46The Cowboys in the Super Bowl, blah, blah, blah.
15:48By the way, if you're a big fan of passive-aggressive tweets, Reese Hall...
15:53Reese Hall just dropped one.
15:55Tweeted out, damn, we sure got a lot of money in Florham Park, all these contracts dudes
16:01signing, and so essentially the base of the Jets, while he got the franchise tag, that is
16:08interesting.
16:09Their defense was atrocious last year.
16:11Aaron Glenn, the head coach, calling defensive plays, coming in again saying, I'm going to
16:16call defensive plays.
16:17I got to fix this defense.
16:19We need to spend money on that side of the ball.
16:21And that was an embarrassment for Aaron Glenn, who's a defensive-minded coach, to go into
16:26a season and look that bad defensively.
16:29So that's...
16:30I know Reese Hall's looking at it going, hold on.
16:32How can I go ahead and get my gold nugget out of this thing?
16:36But they have to fix that defense.
16:38Yeah, do you remember when we said today's not the day to feel like you got a bargain?
16:42Right.
16:42Greg Allman, who covers the NFL for Fox, said he's hearing that some multiple teams have
16:51offered Mike Evans north of $27 million per year.
16:55So we talked about Alex Pierce getting $29 million, $28 million, $29 million, Mike Evans
17:01maybe getting above $27 million.
17:02I do feel like it's a good day to be George Pickens' representation.
17:06Yeah, for sure.
17:07Absolutely it is.
17:08I do feel like it's a good day to be George Pickens.
