00:00shift gears to the chiefs a little bit because i was looking at we were a week ago talking about
00:03some of the moves to tight ends the other in the 12 personnel and all this other stuff but then
00:08i
00:08was trying to decide because of where their roster is and their lack of interest in drafting one to
00:13this point do you think there's still a part of the chiefs in the back of their brain that thinks
00:16noah gray is still the long-term answer at one of two tight end spots as in is there still
00:22some
00:22hope in the back of your brain that noah gray could be a league average tight end if put in
00:27that position because last year cratered those expectations because he had the worst year of
00:32his career by a mile up to that point i could have been talked into it that he could have
00:36been a five
00:37600 yard tight end which is good enough to be league average and if you got a couple of league
00:42average
00:42tight ends most of the teams in the nfl operate that way and so i was trying to decide if
00:47that
00:47dream's dead and it's just like i guess this is the swan song of noah gray and they'll figure it
00:53out in the off season and hope kyle pitts becomes a free agent or whatever i think this year will
00:57tell
00:57us a lot too you know he's turns 28 to start this season so it's not it's not as if
01:02they have this
01:02young up-and-coming 23 year old tight end waiting i mean he'll be he'll be 28 years old not
01:06old but
01:07also like he's not a long-term solution anyway my guess would be post kelsey if he has a good
01:11year
01:11this season he along with somebody else it would be more of a part of the room it would be
01:15more of a
01:15two tight end type of split thing moving forward a lot of teams can do that if they don't have
01:19a
01:20they don't have a kelsey they don't have a they don't have a tyler warren uh type of tight end
01:24george kittle type of tight end they they can have multiple pieces contribute to that but i'm with you
01:29where it'll be interesting to watch him this year you know i know he had the serious concussion he
01:32only missed a game i think from it though that was really nasty hit that he took yeah especially i
01:36don't know if that impacted him how much was it just the entire offense was a complete mess
01:40at times uh in the plan we'll see but yeah it was disappointing you know i i think the organization
01:46clearly has shown through their actions with the contract a year or so ago like they they
01:49they like noah gray but i i don't think he he was ever frankly going to be like the clear
01:54all right
01:54he's now just we're just gonna hand this thing off to him and he's gonna be the number one tied
01:57in for the next four or five years after kelsey i don't think when they gave him the extension that
02:01was at least maybe a portion of their plan because i looked it up last year and every year you
02:05know
02:05the average average yardage over the last three seasons to be a league average tight end 16th best
02:10tight end in the nfl 550 yards to get it done that's it 550 yards doesn't take much to be
02:18uh
02:18dalton kincaid with 571 last year or okonwa who got okonqua who got 560 all in the same range
02:28brenton strange aj barner like when you look at some of the list of the names you're like
02:32yeah not exactly murderer's row there of future star tight ends now look maybe it'd have been a
02:38little bit higher if everyone had stayed healthy because obviously laporta and some of those other
02:42guys finished with less yards but to be a league average tight end asks very little and i i do
02:49still
02:50think that that was their original plan i guess my question is if he gets back to 400 yards they
02:54talked themselves into that plus tight end one i think he's i think but see you can be labeled
02:59tight in what i i think let's say kelsey is leading receiving tight end in 2027 yeah like let's say
03:04this
03:04is it for kelsey i i think next year you could see a scenario where noah gray fine and maybe
03:10he's
03:10listed as tight end but they they draft a tight end in one of the first couple rounds or they
03:14sign
03:14fine kyle pitts or somebody else and it's just a one-two punch at tight end and their hope is
03:20that
03:20they have you know addressed wide receiver more effectively because that's the one thing we haven't
03:24talked enough about probably when we we mentioned the wide receiver room of the future and worthy will
03:29be a big part of that if he has a nice year this year otherwise they're gonna have to really
03:32pivot
03:32rice we all know the story there if if they don't have kelsey well then i i think this next
03:38off
03:38season they will revert to more resources you know as much as you've wanted it a free agent well on
03:44the wide it could be on the wide receiver side of things because they've been able to get wide
03:47receiver production out of tight end for a decade yeah when you lose that then you bet then you better
03:53be all in on the wide receiver position like them not planning ahead for that you know it's we all
03:57know
03:57it's coming you don't have a future plan like that's what makes me think their plan is noah gray
04:02like and i know that that sounds crazy because you're like that guy had 180 yards or something
04:06last year but i do think that like they would have had a better plan in place had it not
04:11been
04:11or their plan wasn't noah gray because they don't have a long-term answer wide receiver or at tight end
04:17what are they he's banking on i don't know who the free agent wide receivers are next year
04:21that he's not a great george pickens it's not a great crop unless somebody like that opens is it
04:26fair to though to think just based on because for patrick mahomes entire career he's had travis
04:31kelsey for andy reed's entire time essentially in kansas city he he's had kelsey or he's had a
04:38tight end that has been top tier oh i've asked that question so is it is it a little is
04:42it fair
04:42to think that just based on this isn't necessarily andy changing his offense i guess if you will but
04:48traditionally they've gone through tight end enough where i don't know if they would be content with
04:54noah gray i don't know if they'd be content with a tight end only having four or five hundred yards
04:58cody even though other teams are just because of what patrick mahomes is used to and what andy reed
05:03is used to and how that offense is kind of flowed where they might have to change a little bit
05:06but
05:06their best option might have to be they might just be looking at noah gray is a good second tight
05:12end
05:12but we need to have somebody who can give us 800 yards and be at least maybe not the best
05:18but inside
05:18of that top 10 top 8 whatever it is while i agree i think or i fear that that's a
05:25little bit like
05:26saying well i won't settle for league average quarterback play it is hard to get obviously
05:33tight end play not that they won't try it is it is a it is hard work to get league
05:39average tight end
05:40play that you know to or to get better than league average it is not easy to find the brock
05:45bowers
05:45those guys go in the top 10 of the draft the current free agents scheduled at tight end it's pretty
05:53much
05:53kyle pitts tj hawkinson uh he'll be 30 years old by that time or 31 years old and then the
05:58same names
05:59are available now right hunter henry or evan ingram or david and joku the kind of players who signed
06:04one-year contracts no one no one is moving the needle a ton i guess maybe better than noah gray
06:10depending on the type of year he has but certainly not that we know george pickens devontae adams
06:16chris godwin it's the olds right who will break in the category in there and then guys who could be
06:21franchise tag like drake london or some others and so like they're gonna have to address it in
06:26the draft at some point it doesn't seem like they got any long-term plans like that's the part that
06:30still gets me they plan on using next year's first round pick to go be the where the team who
06:34trades
06:35for a wide receiver next year like aj brown of the patriots i think given as long as they don't
06:39restructure chris jones deal and so that big number can go down and they can pivot away i think they
06:44will
06:44be extremely aggressive in trade slash free agency or wide receiver we had this very conversation the day
06:49after the draft which is clearly with how they have pivoted with all defense in the draft this year
06:53i think they're setting themselves up that in 2027 they are going to address the wide receiver position
06:57via trade slash free agency yes someone texted and you mean you don't trust jake briningstool to get
07:02800 yards yeah he can't stay healthy he was on the camp darling island list last year he was he
07:07got
07:07kicked off the island pretty quick if i remember didn't get hurt yeah no he didn't exactly and then
07:12he did not he did not play i mean he flat out did not play it's by the way like
07:17in a lot of ways
07:17it's not even meant to be i think sometimes it comes off as like we're just anti these players
07:21it's just i don't know like undrafted free agent jake briningstool the odds of him ever being a
07:26successful nfl player it's like i'm not even hating on the guy let alone getting a start yeah or getting
07:30on the field i like i've just decided my personal philosophy on bottom of the roster nfl guys is i'll
07:38care about them when they make me like i i can't be bothered to care about the guy who's a
07:44freak
07:45athlete the wide receiver i can't remember his name now the wide receiver is a freak athlete who's
07:48on the roster huh oh he was undrafted he was an undrafted free agent i will call him i will
07:54care
07:54about him if he makes me until then i won't
07:57you
