17 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Kathryn Chalk
Transcript
00:00Hello.
00:01After what's been a cool week, there are signs of it turning warmer as we head through
00:06the week.
00:06But before that, there are showers and longer spells of rain.
00:10This is the latest satellite and radar loop.
00:13We have lots of cloud waiting in the Atlantic and frontal systems moving their way through.
00:18We have this slow-moving weather front across northern parts of Scotland and a westerly
00:23wind drawing in showers.
00:25So, longer spells of rain across parts of Orkney, but the most frequent showers across
00:31Scotland today and across Northern Ireland.
00:34Some of these are going to be heavy, perhaps with the odd rumble of thunder.
00:37To the south of that, across northern parts of England into the Midlands, there will be
00:41some bright or sunny spells to be had.
00:44A few showers still persisting across the south-east, but perhaps not as frequent or as heavy.
00:50Temperatures are still on the cool side for the time of year.
00:5313 or 14 degrees, feeling unpleasant in any of those heavy downpours.
00:57To the south, closer to average, around 16 or 17 degrees.
01:02Through Sunday evening, that band of rain across Orkney will eventually push its way northwards
01:07into Shetland.
01:09A rash of showers still persisting, but the showers across Northern Ireland will merge
01:13to give longer spells of rain and that will eventually move into north-western parts of
01:18England into Wales and the south-west as we start Monday morning.
01:23Clearer and drier for the longest across the east of England and across Scotland and Northern
01:29Ireland.
01:29Here, if we do get any prolonged clear spells, that's where temperatures could fall.
01:34A touch of rural frost and also some mist and fog patches first thing on Monday.
01:39So a chillier start across Northern parts of Scotland, perhaps even into Northern Ireland.
01:45And a fresh start across the south-east, but temperatures holding up overnight where we
01:49have the cloud and rain in the west.
01:51So a bright start across many places further east and across Scotland, but this band of
01:56showery rain, perhaps even thundery initially, will start breaking up.
02:01We'll see more showers developing across Northern parts of England and eventually into Scotland
02:06through the afternoon.
02:08Again, not everywhere we'll see these showers.
02:10There will be some fleeting bright or sunny spells in between.
02:13The showers do ease across Northern Ireland with more hazy sunshine ahead of this next weather
02:20front.
02:20So the winds will start increasing as we head into the afternoon across the far south-west.
02:25With more in the way of cloud around towards the south-east, temperatures only around 15
02:29or 16 degrees, similar to the north at 13 or 14.
02:34As we head through Monday evening, perhaps some welcome rainfall for gardeners and farmers.
02:40We have this area of low pressure moving its way through, a squeeze in the ice bars indicating
02:44some stronger and blusterer winds as we go through Monday night and into Tuesday.
02:50But back to Monday evening, we have the showers, they'll persist and push their way north and
02:56eastwards before being replaced by this area of low pressure.
03:01So outbreaks of heavier and more persistent rain as we end Monday.
03:05And that will lead to actually a much milder start as we go into Tuesday.
03:10And like I said, there is also signs of things warming up, but I'll have more details on all
03:15of that later.
