15 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there. It's certainly been a lively few days with plenty of rain, hail and thunder showers around
00:07and a continued cold wind. Now for this afternoon we keep the cold wind and that wind will be
00:14particularly strong for Shetland and Orkney making it feel especially chilly here. There'll also be
00:20further showers coming in so much as Scotland, especially the north of Scotland, one or two for
00:24Northern Ireland and a cluster moving through the Midlands into the south of England and these are
00:28likely to be on the heavy side, most likely avoiding the hail of recent days, but fairly
00:36heavy nonetheless. In between there'll be some drier weather and actually some parts of the UK far
00:42fewer showers. We're talking about Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, Northern England, parts of
00:48central Scotland and Northern Ireland. Actually some places escaping dry with reasonable amounts of
00:54sunshine. So out of the wind, in the sunshine, with fewer showers, feeling a little more pleasant,
00:59but we're still in the same air mass. We've still got this northerly wind making it feel much colder
01:04than the thermometers would suggest. Nine to eleven Celsius and look at that, three Celsius for Shetland
01:11because of the strength of that cold wind. Those are the feels like temperatures, but overnights we're
01:18going to see, well, temperatures, the actual temperatures, fall away significantly because
01:23the winds ease, the clouds clear, and fairly widely those temperatures will drop further
01:30compared with recent nights as a result. And the most widespread clear skies will be across central
01:35and southern Scotland, northern and central England and the south. There'll still be some cloud and
01:40some showers moving into western and northern and eastern fringes, but inland widely. With clear skies
01:46and lighter winds, I think main urban areas, four to seven Celsius, but out of the breeze in sheltered
01:54rural spots, we could even see an air frost as we begin Saturday. So gardeners beware, a cold night
02:00to come, chilly start to Saturday, but plenty of sunshine, especially for Scotland, northern and
02:05eastern England. A cloud will build through the day, but fewer showers. We've still got a brisk wind
02:11and showers for Shetland and Orkney. But further west, it's more a case of cloud building into the
02:17afternoon and persistent rain moving through. Nothing especially heavier except for Northern
02:23Ireland by the end of the day. Elsewhere, it's generally light and patchy, but it will change the
02:29feel of things, I think. And after that chilly start with the clouds rolling in and some rain,
02:33it's not going to feel especially pleasant in the west. But to the east, with temperatures reaching
02:3716 Celsius and sunshine continuing into the evening, well, it will feel a bit more pleasant
02:43compared with recent days. Those shower and rain clouds move east through the evening, followed
02:49by a brisk west to northwesterly wind for Northern Ireland and frequent showers here by the end of the
02:56day on Saturday. And that sets the scene really for Sunday. Plenty of showers around or even longer
03:02spells of rain, especially across northwestern parts of the UK, but it's not going to feel quite as cold.
03:07Early next week, unsettled. Later next week, drier and much warmer.
