16 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, welcome to your latest Met Office forecast. It does remain changeable over the next few days, but the
00:07good news is we start to lose the cold northerly airflow.
00:11We do replace it with a westerly wind and that does bring Atlantic weather systems in, particularly later on Monday
00:17and Tuesday, some wet and windy weather moving in.
00:21But then signs of high pressure building in as we slowly move through the rest of next week and temperatures
00:27rising as well as those winds turn to a southerly direction. More on that in a moment.
00:32For Saturday afternoon, best of the sunshine across eastern parts of Scotland, eastern England here.
00:38They're turning increasingly hazy as cloud and rain slowly pushes in from the west.
00:42The rain will be light and patchy in places, but there could be a few heavier bursts over the higher
00:47ground, say across parts of the Pennines down into the Welsh mountains as well.
00:52Brighter skies following on this afternoon across parts of Northern Ireland with a scattering of showers.
00:57The breeze picking up here, but for most of us, the wind's turning to a more of a westerly direction,
01:04still northerly across parts of Orkney and Shetland.
01:06So, rather cool here, temperatures 10, 11 Celsius, but for most of us, more widely getting towards the mid-teens
01:13and the best of the sunshine in the east, up to around 16, possibly 17 Celsius.
01:17So, a little higher than recent days, but with the cloud and the rain across central and western areas, it
01:23still will be rather chilly for the time of year.
01:27As we move through this evening time, the band of rain pushes into eastern areas, one or two heavier bursts
01:32possible on it,
01:33but starting to see some clear skies moving in by the end of the evening overnight across much of the
01:39UK.
01:40Blustery showers across the north and west, still some longer spells of rain across Scotland,
01:44but that means generally more cloud around across the UK.
01:47Temperatures will be higher overall, generally between 5 and 10 Celsius.
01:51Recent nights, we've seen temperatures down to zero, so it should be a largely frost-free start to Sunday morning.
01:57Some bright or sunny spells across England and Wales, but also a scattering of showers, a cloudier, damp start across
02:03Scotland.
02:04Some blustery showers in the west, these also across Northern Ireland.
02:08And the showers turning particularly heavy across the northwest of the UK through into the afternoon.
02:12Some rumbles of thunder, some hail possible in there.
02:15Some of these stretching into western parts of England and Wales later.
02:18But central and eastern parts of England and Wales, plenty of bright to sunny spells, one or two showers possible.
02:24And in that sunshine, temperatures are lifting a little higher, 17, possibly 18 Celsius in one or two spots,
02:31but generally across the whole of the country between 12 and 15 degrees.
02:34Feeling rather cool across the north and the west with the showers moving in here,
02:38but feeling fairly pleasant compared to recent days across central and eastern areas.
02:43And the showers, which are heavy in the west, will continue to move across the rest of the UK through
02:48the evening.
02:49So the odd rumble of thunder, some hefty downpours, could lead some tricky travelling conditions to end the day.
02:55But as I mentioned at the beginning, signs of a change on the way as we move through next week.
03:00High pressure building in from Europe.
03:02It turns the winds to a southerly direction and we start to import some warmer air.
03:07Temperatures by the end of the week to Friday could be up to around 26 or 27 Celsius across parts
03:14of England and Wales.
03:16So a big change compared to the 15, 16 Celsius we've had over recent days.
