00:00Hi there, we've had the exceptional heat, now we've got the increased risk in many places
00:05of thundery downpours over the next few days, but not necessarily useful amounts of rain
00:10across those parts of England and Wales where it is most needed of course.
00:14The hot air remains for many parts of the UK, but this cold front is going to very slowly
00:20cross the country from the north-west, eventually introducing fresher air, but it's going to
00:24take some time, so a very warm night to come for many places, a humid night and thunderstorms
00:28over northern Ireland, with torrential rain in places, hail, frequent lightning, well
00:33they'll move into western Scotland, blossoming into larger areas of heavy rain overnight.
00:37Also the chance of thunderstorms affecting the east and south of Scotland, north-west England
00:42into north Wales, one or two showers elsewhere, but the highest temperatures overnight remain
00:48central and eastern parts of the country where temperatures will remain above 20 Celsius,
00:54mid to high teens widely elsewhere, so wherever you are, it is an uncomfortable night for sleeping.
00:58High humidities as well to take into account.
01:02Now we start Friday with these outbreaks of heavy rain and some thunderstorms moving east-northeast
01:08across Scotland, but further showers and potential thunderstorms moving into northern England,
01:14north Wales. You can just about make out the weak cold front and effectively as it runs into
01:20the hot air across England and Wales it triggers instability, so cloud development.
01:24And where these thunderstorms develop, well, they're likely to give torrential rain, frequent
01:29lightning and hail, but as always with these things, very hit and miss.
01:35Showers into the west of Scotland, Northern Ireland, a fresher feel here, you can see that
01:38change in wind direction. I think for Northern Ireland, Western Scotland, high teens, locally
01:4320 Celsius. Eastern, Southern Scotland, Northern England into North Wales, more like the mid-20s,
01:49but the hot air remains for central and southern parts of the country in excess of 30 Celsius
01:55once again, 33 or 34 in the far south east. So not as hot as Thursday, but still another
02:02hot day to come. And the heat over the near continent could trigger some thunderstorms which
02:07may drift into the south east by the end of the afternoon and the evening, but that's certainly
02:13an aspect of the forecast which is uncertain. So you can see there is the chance of some
02:16thunderstorms across parts of England and Wales where we desperately need rain, but thunderstorms
02:21like this don't deliver useful amounts of rain. They can deliver instead issues because
02:27large and torrential downpour onto dry ground can run off very quickly. So yeah, there is the risk
02:36of thunderstorms delivering negative impacts, not necessarily positive impacts. And as always,
02:42they're going to be hit and miss. Many places staying dry. Heading into the start of the weekend,
02:48you can see those potential thunderstorms in the south east and another very warm start,
02:54a muggy start in the south east. But fresher air is trying to arrive from the west-northwest and
02:58that's the theme through the weekend. All areas feeling cooler and fresher with that change in air mass.
03:05Actually, once any early storms have moved away, it's a largely dry and sunny day once again across
03:11England and Wales. Some showers reaching the north and west of Scotland, one or two for Northern Ireland
03:16and with a keen breeze from the west and northwest, it's certainly going to feel different. Temperatures
03:23in the northwest, mid to high teens and even towards the south and southeast, back towards the mid-20s,
03:29perhaps the high 20s and some of the warmer spots in the far south east. But yeah, significantly down
03:36compared with Thursday. And a cooler day to come again on Sunday. Increasingly through Sunday and
03:41the start of next week, it's going to turn unsettled. But it's the north where initially that more
03:46unsettled and wetter weather will arrive rather than the rain-starved south. The hunt for rain in the
