24 May - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Hi there.
00:01Record-breaking temperatures for May are forecast in the next few days, and it's likely that
00:06some places will see an exceptional heatwave for the time of year.
00:10But it's not hot for everyone.
00:11Western and northern Scotland will see much cloudier skies, outbreaks of rain at times
00:15over the next 24 hours, but for most, southern Scotland, Northern Ireland and the bulk of
00:19England and Wales, it's blue skies and water-walled sunshine out there this afternoon.
00:23We might just see one or two patches of mist and low cloud, just flirting with Irish sea
00:28coasts at times through this afternoon.
00:30But even though some coasts will be a fraction cooler, it's going to be another very warm
00:34day for the time of year.
00:36We saw the hottest day of the year so far recorded yesterday, with a high of 30.5 degrees Celsius
00:41in Kent, and this afternoon will be even warmer for most, 32 degrees Celsius in the south-east
00:47of England.
00:47Again, very warm indeed for the time of year, 25 to 27 degrees quite widely there across
00:53England and Wales, and a warmer day for Scotland and Northern Ireland as well.
00:58Now, the sunshine at this time of the year is very strong, high to possibly very high levels
01:03of UV out there this afternoon for many of us.
01:05So do remember to protect your skin from those harmful UV rays.
01:10Now, it's going to be a fine, warm and sunny evening for the bulk of the UK as well.
01:15Very little, if any, in the way of cloud.
01:17But for the north-west of Scotland, still here, quite a bit cloudier, bits and pieces of rain,
01:22although the rain mostly light and tending to ease and clear away for a time towards
01:26the very far north-west.
01:28Now, it's going to stay very warm tonight in the most populated urban areas in the south.
01:33Temperatures perhaps not falling below 20 degrees in some of the cities, which is exceptionally
01:38warm for the time of year.
01:39Even in the summer time, we don't often see temperatures remain above 20 degrees through
01:44the night.
01:44Even further north, a mild night.
01:46Temperatures here possibly dipping down into high single figures in the countryside.
01:50But for most towns and cities, lows are between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius.
01:55Once again then, on Monday, north-western Scotland seeing cloudier skies with bits and pieces of
02:00rain.
02:00But generally, the rain quite light.
02:02Otherwise, another sunny and warmer day to come.
02:05A hot day to come for many parts of central, eastern and southern England.
02:09Temperatures here climbing into the low 30s by the afternoon.
02:12So, we're probably going to beat the all-time maximum temperature record for May, which
02:18currently stands at 32.8 degrees Celsius.
02:2034 degrees Celsius is expected in the greater London region, possibly through the home counties
02:25and up towards Cambridgeshire as well.
02:27A small chance we could even see 35 degrees.
02:29So, an exceptionally hot day for the time of year.
02:33The low 30s possible elsewhere across England and Wales.
02:36And a warmer day also for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:39To put this into some context, this graphic just shows how much hotter it will be tomorrow
02:44compared to the average for May.
02:46So, temperatures across the bulk of England and Wales are over 10 degrees higher than we
02:50usually expect at this time of the year.
02:53Now, it will stay mostly fine, sunny and warm as we go through bank holiday Monday evening
02:58if you do have outdoor plans.
03:00Once again though, the very far north-west of Scotland is still seeing a bit more in the way
03:03of cloud.
03:04Any rain, though, tending to die away.
03:06Through the early part of the week, it stays very hot on Tuesday.
03:09Temperatures once again, approaching the mid-30s degrees Celsius for some of us.
03:14There will be a downturn in terms of temperatures somewhat through the middle to latter part of
03:18the week.
03:18Now, the heat could well potentially spark one or two isolated thunderstorms across the
03:22UK.
03:23Isolated on Tuesday and Wednesday, perhaps one or two more of them by Thursday.
03:27But for the bulk of the UK, it is set to stay dry, fine and settled through much of
03:32the week ahead.
